Taking The Plunge by Lisa Pouria "The ~earn has made a great turn for the better, and a lot of our success has to do with spirit," says swimmer Kim Desandre. Her best strokes are the 500-yard freestyle, which she can swim in 5.41 minutes, and the 100-yard butterfly which she can swim in 1.05 minutes. Some of the other outstanding swimmers on this year's team include Bruce Hornick and Dean Micali, who have been swimming for Notre Dame since their freshman year. Bruce can swim the 100-yard butterfly in 56 seconds, and Dean took two first place wins in a Mercer County Tournament held at West Windsor. According to Kim, there are about 40 swimmers on this year's team, and they're always looking for new talent. They swim against ten Mercer County teams each season. Assistant coach Mr. Desandre, Kim's father, says that the team has been "receptive to a new style of coaching." Next year, Mr. Desandre will be head coach of the swim team, replacing Miss O'Grady. "Hopefully the future will hold a lot more direction for the team," he says.
