I would like to welcome you to the 15th Annual Nurse Practitioner Conference, our very first virtual conference. Our conference team and many of us here are currently on the traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Syilx Nations. We recognize that as a virtual conference that many other traditional and unceded territories are represented and we encourage each of you to acknowledge the lands on which you live, work and play. Every NP Conference relies on a committed, passionate, and well-coordinated team to make this event a success. In the past 18 months, we have faced unprecedented challenges and despite all the uncertainty, the devotion to organize this event has been outstanding and must be commended. It speaks to our tenacity and the importance of bringing together nurse practitioners in unity from across all corners of our province and even, beyond. I want to personally thank our Conference Committee Co-Chairs Liz Mulvaney and Jaqueline Lum, our Events Coordinator Brenda Ingram, and the rest of the NP Conference Planning Committee for their efforts, time investment and the unwavering resilience they demonstrated all along. This could not have been possible without you! It is with pride that I highlight, particularly given this challenging year, the amazing contributions NPs make to the health care system and globally to population health. In BC, our number has soared, and we are represented now by a robust workforce of almost 700 Nurse Practitioners, who bring influential, positive changes across all levels of care, continue to advocate for health care issues at key tables and actively contribute to the BC Primary Care transformation.

In the last two years, I have seen our profession continue to grow particularly in terms of scope related advancements, the introduction of a new employment model and the establishment of formal and progressive collaborative relationships with the government and other major provincial partners. I see us moving into the right direction and moving with a great sense of purpose! It is our connection, through events like this, that brings us together to share NP expertise, broadcast our achievements and re-energize our spirit and dedication to deliver best quality care.

With the Year of Nurse and Midwife still upon us, this NP Conference is also a time to pause, to reflect on our past and present, and to show appreciation for all who have answered the call of duty, no matter their role in fighting this global pandemic. I wish you all a great time participating in this conference. Let us all, make this experience…a memorable one!

ICN NP/APN Network Conference

Carol Ann Fried, MEd, BA Finding Your Joy-Spot: The Heart & Science of Happiness at Work Carol Ann Fried has been leading seminars and consulting with business, education, health, government and the helping professions for over twenty years. She is a master trainer and motivational speaker. Frequently interviewed for radio, television and newspapers, Carol Ann has enjoyed faculty appointments at the Universities of British Columbia and McGill. Carol Ann obtained her Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology from McGill University in Montreal. She has also taught Graduate Students in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia. She received her B.A. (Honours) in three areas of study: Psychology, Sociology and Romance Languages from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

She is the proud recipient of the coveted second prize in CBC Radio’s world-famous answering machine contest and has been featured on CTV’s “Live It Up!”. Carol Ann’s latest creative foray is into the world of improvisational theatre, where she is cofounder and performs with Vancouver Playback Theatre Troupe. She absolutely adores Galiano and Salt Spring Island, singing harmony, and pets of any kind - dogs especially. Born and raised in Halifax, Carol Ann lived fourteen years in Montreal, and has been in Vancouver since 1986. Carol Ann (who also answers to “The Empress”) exudes a natural creativity of mind and spirit that stimulates a motivational learning experience. Her sessions are invariably hailed as practical, dynamic and fun.

The ICN NP/APN Network Conference is the only international meeting on advanced practice nursing and brings together more than 1,000 advanced practice nurses such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse consultants, along with decision-makers, researchers, educators, administrators, policymakers, students and many more from around the world.

In partnership with the International Council of Nurses and the Canadian Nurses Association, the Nurse Practitioner Association of Nova Scotia is hosting this conference which promises to be a unique and exciting event taking place virtually August 29 - September 1, 2021 under the theme Envisioning Advanced Practice Nursing Beyond 2020: Wider Reach, Bigger Impact.

Delegates can actively participate and network in the virtual conference. This interactive meeting will provide a great variety of content including plenaries, panels, concurrent sessions, clinical workshops, e-poster displays, symposia and discussion round tables. It also features a virtual exhibition to meet with sponsors and exhibitors from pharmaceutical companies, to educational institutions, health authorities and more.

“We Stand Together in Remembrance of Our Children” - 215 by Lou-ann Ika’wega Neel

Artist statement: Gilakas’la. My artwork, titled “We Stand Together in Remembrance of Our Children - 215”, was created to honour the souls of all our children that were taken away from our families, our villages, our Nations as part of the Government of Canada’s genocidal attempt to eradicate all of our peoples.

The family figures around the circle represent the people of all directions - North, South, East and West, and the directions in between - each headdress signifies the great Nations of our peoples all across the lands that Canada claims as its own.

The smaller figures are abstract representations of our children - I chose the colour yellow to symbolize the Sun, that which gives us life - just as our children do… they are our reason for being. The children’s arms are raised up in thanks and joyfulness and playfulness - what every child should experience throughout their growing-up years.

Inside the circle, there is another circle representing a braid of our sacred red cedarbark from our Tree of Life - to represent all the beauty and strength of our respective cultures and cultural ways.

As a survivor of Alberni Residential School, I wanted people to know that there is nothing more powerful than when we stand together - this is a teaching I knew at age 6, before I went to residential school. It is what gave me hope when I was immersed in the hopelessness of that place; and it is what gives me strength today as we continue to seek justice.
