Our goal is to one day open up a crisis center that provides training, and resources for women of domestic abuse. It will be staffed with professionals to teach skills for a variety of jobs so that these women can support themselves and their children and be free from welfare and being forced to live in dangerous conditions and lifestyles. The center will include volunteer counselors for both the women and children to help mend from abuse. There will be regular Bible study classes offered to encourage a continued walk in Christ to enable them to in turn help others. We pray to have a huge selection of professional clothing to give these women starting out in their job search. The center will also include, a food pantry, and help for utilities, rent, and transportation while they work to get on their feet.

A Word from the Editor Greetings and a warm welcome to our fifth issue of Food for Soul Magazine! We couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to bring to our reading audience pages of aweinspiring articles, information, and recipes for the soul and the kitchen. Please take some time to get to know the layout of our magazine. You will notice each page is filled with material to enhance, encourage, and provide practical ways to grow spiritually, mentally, and physically.

You can look at one category at a time, or examine the articles page by page to choose which to read first. Just as with any paper magazine, you can choose to sit and read the whole thing at once, or come back to this issue several times to digest the articles more leisurely.

We established this on-line magazine to promote a strong deliberate life-style of giving and a heart to serve. What you will find in the pages of Food for Soul Magazine, is a collection of inspiring, educational articles written by actual, honest, downto-earth folks who work hard to live deliberately, but who are not afraid to admit the struggles that we often sometimes experience.

We are honored to share the work of committed people who live their lives with a purpose and a plan to promote a work that will help many lives. Feel free to leave comments and share your thoughts or ask the authors a question.

Brenda A. Graff FOUNDER Food For Soul Magazine (Texas Tornado) as some have called me reside in, Texas with my Husband, Kirby and our two youngest. Being a former news reporter sparked a great desire in me to continue writing and researching, but with a purpose to help others. Being a wife, and mom of six has had its challenges, but it has taught me much along the journey. I utilize the experience to coach others to ignite a passion for positive change. I spend much time on projects to boost morale, and a lot of time in the kitchen creating new dishes.

Find Your Spark How to find your God-Given Purpose

How much time do you spend reading the lines from someone else’s script or running from yourself? This is the question Anita Carman, Founder of Inspire Women, challenges her audience with as she encourages them not to miss out on what God created for each of us to finish on earth.

The vision of Inspire Women is to help women of all ethnicities and economic levels to find their spark and to be empowered to fulfill their God given purpose. At the core of this mission is the fundamental belief that God created us for a purpose and someone must be intentional in connecting people to purpose because living a God given purpose doesn’t just happen.

Living a God given purpose is a choice.

It means saying no so we can say yes to God. We were never created to fulfill our own dreams or to fulfill the dreams of another human. We were made for divine appointments. Because God breathed eternity into us when we’re born, dreams molded by our human imagination are limited by our human imagination and fall short of the divine appointment entrusted to the son or daughter of the King of Kings.

Does this mean we can’t dream any dream at all and should just sit and wait for God to fill a blank slate? On the contrary, God welcomes our ideas to change the world. For example, King David offered to build the temple. But God reserves the right to change the dream, expand the dream, or tweak the dream. If we find ourselves arguing, that’s a telltale sign that life has become more about worshipping the dream than worshipping God. Some think that serving God means doing what we hate to do. They fear if they suggest plan A, God will surely ask them to do plan B. The Bible does not support this idea. God is the one who created us with a unique background and even with unique sufferings. Take King David’s story as an example…Yes, he offered to build the temple and was turned down. But his real passion was worship. Look at all the days he spent as a shepherd boy writing poetry in the pastures. So when God changed the dream and wanted Solomon to build the temple while asking David to assist, David got to give God the worship He wanted.

Don’t be surprised to find passion in your God given purpose. As a child, have you ever said, “When I grow up this will never happen again!” The national statistics show one out of four women suffering from some kind of abuse. How can we let God transform our suffering into healing for others?

Who else will have more compassion to help those from abused situations than those who have survived similar sufferings? To identify our God given purpose, we can look for clues in our background and sufferings. Ministry is often birthed in our sufferings. When we waste our sufferings, we miss our calling.

For those who do not come from a background with dysfunction, their upbringing is a special gift to accomplish God’s purpose. They have been given a solid foundation as a result of a stable home and solid godly parents. This is as unique as those with a more dysfunctional background.

Because they are not healing from emotional wounds, they spend less time focusing inwards and can focus outwards. They can build from their strength and optimism.

They can focus on the big picture and invest their time or resources in building structures and organizations that bless their community.

The Bible speaks of God giving us a passion in the same way Moses who grew up witnessing the oppression of the Hebrew people developed a passion to lead them to freedom. In our backgrounds we will find cues that connect our past with what God is doing in the present.

When God directs my attention to something He wants to change in the world, the only thing standing in my way is me. I can try to disqualify myself, I can try to recruit someone else, I can try to run from God. But at the end of the day, God doesn’t make recruiting mistakes and when we run from our assignment we spend our days in restless wandering or reading someone else’s script. We were created with an inborn need to fit in somewhere in this world. We can force fit ourselves somewhere and totally miss out on God’s plans. Or we can offer Him our unique backgrounds, our resources, the talents He has given us and let Him fit us into His dreams for us.

And when we finally discern the cues from our backgrounds and sufferings and learn to live for God’s purpose, we will be amazed at what it feels like to find our spark. It’s like a wanderer finding home for the first time. It’s that incredible feeling of knowing this is the reason why we were born!

Coffee, Coupons and Ministry

By Carla McDougal The Coupon Angels? Who are these women?

How do they fit into ministry? Buzz continues to heighten as this group serves the Lord in unique ways. Every Monday morning with coupons in one hand and Starbucks in the other they plan their strategies.

One morning I decided to visit these Angels in action. With pen and notebook in hand, I strolled into Starbucks. Scanning the room, I noticed a table covered in coupons and grocery ads. Eight women surrounded the mound as if they were accomplishing a mission. On the surface, it looked like a game of “Coupon Go-Fish.” As I approached the table I could hear statements like, “I need a StarKist® tuna and here is a SoftScrub®. Oh, you take the Kroger’s special on peanut butter.”

In amazement, I asked Melinda Trawick, the founder or as I call her The Arch Coupon Angel, what inspired her to start this ministry.

Her pastor inspired her when he said … “When God calls you to serve Him, DO IT!” God’s word encourages in John 12:26 - "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me." John 12:26 The community food pantries immediately popped into her mind. Upon investigation, Melinda discovered the shelves were bare. It occurred to her for the price of lunch and with coupons she could help these needed organizations.

With excitement, instead of asking friends to lunch, she invited them to Monday morning coffee at Starbucks. The only stipulation was they must bring coupons, grocery ads, and what they would spend for lunch. As a result, in over a year this group has grown

from 1 to 25 with one purpose in mind…to be more Christ-centered. "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me." John 12:26 What are the results? Three food pantries in their community are filled to the brim with canned goods, baby items, dried milk, toiletry items, and more!

Interested in adding a Coupon Angel Group to your ministry? Here are a few tips…

•Begin collecting coupons from the newspaper, magazines, online and more.

•Review the weekly ads from stores in your area.

•Set a time and place for your group with the understanding that you are to use what you would spend on lunch that day (They started with $7.00 - $10.00/per person.).

•“Divide and conquer” is the motto. After matching the coupons and the ads, divide in to groups of two or three.

•Armed with coupons in hand go your separate ways like angels on the move. You will find incredible savings each week… all for the price of lunch!

•Meet back at a set time. Take turns delivering the supplies to your various food pantries.

This reminds me of the boy who gave up his lunch and how Jesus multiplied it to feed the 5000. Is God calling you to give up something, so His purposes can be accomplished through you? Listen to His voice. Act on His calling. Surrender your ministry to Jesus!

Shall We Dance?

(Inside peek of Tammy Head-Author of More: From Messes to Miracles and popular LifeWay study Duty or Delight: Knowing Where You Stand with God) Growing up I always wanted more. Boredom was not my friend. I liked the faster lane of life—happy jaunts, bustling days, pining for fun. Were you similar?

Remember the days of wondering, why do I have to make my bed? The days when childhood chores confined us to a prisoner’s existence? When chores were the dumbest idea in the world? So was brushing our teeth, taking a bath, and obeying rules—who has time for such things? We wanted to play! The goal, the aim, the fixation was for the next best taste of glory. Did you know to engage God is to taste His glory?

He’s fascinating.

Remember the angels surrounding His throne in Isaiah’s vision (Isa. 6:2)? From eternity past to eternity present they cannot get enough of Him. The beauty and brilliance of His majesty provokes a wonder they cannot shake. Nor do they want to. Their God does it for them. Surely they flap their wings in the highest praise for the loveliness and majesty set before them.

God, three-in-One, He is the prize. I’m unsure if angels were created in their angelic makeup with a constant need to be pleasurably mystified; but we sure are. The discontent we often sense festering in us is not bad per se. It’s what we do with our urges and surges to taste this glory we’re looking for. Will we reach for goodness or filthiness in our pursuit to find pleasure?

If we lift up our heads and affix our eyes on the One who longs to satisfy us, the pursuit is saturated in the goodness of God. But if we place our aim on temporary satisfactions—even the best the world has to offer—we may find pleasure alright. But not the kind that promises pure joy. Nothing can supply us eternal pleasure without end but the Maker of heaven and earth.

Oh friend, walking with God is so much more than boring obedience. It’s actually awakening to the One who holds the universe in one hand while extending the other to us—His beautiful creation—in wondrous grace and says to us, “Can I have this dance?”

Being the perfect Gentleman, He doesn’t press us past the point of awkwardness.

Whether we decline or receive His gracious offer, we have a sense of freedom to choose. Yet, many of us feel caught in a tailspin of conflict between taking His hand or not. If we’re honest, some of us are mad for being put in this situation in the first place. Others of us have lived around this dance so long we’re unmoved by it. Still others of us were raised to live so far above personal vulnerability.

Many of us think to ourselves, why on earth would I lower myself to such demonstrations of foolishness as dancing? People can do whatever they want but the only reason I even came to this dance was to appease the one who brought me here in the first place.

Besides, isn’t the people-watching great? Have you seen how some of these folks dance?

To tell you the truth, I’ve worn embarrassment for them a time or two. Then again, after going home, we must admit there’s a sliver of us who hates admitting we’re a little jealous of those who have such a carefreeness of heart out there dancing.

Hmmm. Do you ever wonder what life would be like if we ditched our performance-driven living and ravenous insecurities by throwing caution to the wind and downright danced?

Danced until all performance-driven living was shaken from its tight grip on our soul.

Danced until we quit caring so much about what other people think. Truth is, maybe we should quit sitting around having theological debates about such things as dancing. While the One who extends His hand to us for a glorious dance is gracious but we keep failing to take His hand.

Why is this so? Why do we decline or even shift our eyes from His gaze and shamefully say, “No. That’s okay. I’m good, Tammie 2actually.” All the while we’re secretly wishing we weren’t so insecure to look like a fool for some lighthearted moments of fun.

He’s such a good dancer, we think to ourselves, surely He doesn’t want to dance with me.

The Queen of Misfits among such throngs of worthy women? This is when a sense of doom, gloom, and a critical spirit arrests our thoughts. We’re trying to pretend we’re good but our face is telling on us. It always does. Why can’t we be perfect like the ones we’ve seen dance with Him before?

Even more perplexing—why does He continue to dance with those so seemingly selfrighteous, judgmental, and downright mean? Doesn’t He discern such ugliness behind each one’s eyes? When He really looks at them? Bewildered by it, I have had to fight off entertaining the thought of walking away. But suddenly and surprisingly a surge of something lovely has hit me these days. Perhaps it’s time I quit refusing myself of what might do this soul some good? Maybe this is the more I’ve been longing for? Perhaps I’ll find my legs? I can see His hand. It’s outstretched my way. Oh Lord, here we go—I’m going for it . . .Wait, He wants you to come too!

Hurry now! What are you waiting for?

How Shall I Count the Ways?

No More Dieting!

Counting calories is so old school. It’s not about the amount of calories. It is about the quality of the calories: (quality over quantity) less calories from carbohydrates and more from protein sources. My heart pains me every time I hear someone is counting or even cutting calories. People place themselves on 2000 calorie diets, 1500 calorie diets and even 500 calorie diets. 500 calories is not safe.

There are several different diets. Have you heard of one

I am going to stay out of the DIET wars. But just to be clear, there is one common factor among all the ‘diets,” reduced carbohydrates.

Food addiction is different than other addiction. You can stop drinking alcohol with help and never go back. You can stop smoking with help and never go back. But you cannot stop eating food and never go back. Not going to happen. Food is a necessary part of life. Without food we die. But we also know that an overabundance of food can also kill.

Our bodies need micronutrients and macronutrients to fight infection, for proper wound healing, to grow healthy hair, healthy nails and healthy skin, and other really important processes of the body. Three-fourths of the U.S. population does not meet daily recommended dietary allowances of these nutrients.

≥50 g I’m tired and I’m gaining weight

= 50 g I’m okay.

I’m not gaining Or losing weight.

≤50 g I feel great!

I’m losing weight.

They are the folks who are diagnosed as overweight or obese. So please, stop starving. You can eat 2000 calories a day and loss weight. It is about the quality of the calories and not the quantity.

Take a look at the folks in the picture. Person #1 gets less than 50 grams of protein every day. This is not enough to power the many metabolic function of the body. This guy is gaining weight because his body is storing any food that is able to be stored. He is starving for protein. Person #2 is getting 50 grams of protein every day. This guy can’t lose weight even though he is eating only healthy food. The body can’t risk losing the stored fat because he may drop his protein consumption any day. Person #3 is getting more than 50 grams of protein every day. The body is getting the micronutrients and macronutrients it needs to repair itself and then energy to maintain an adequate metabolism. The body is ready to start using and losing those fat stores.

So to be direct, eat more protein and less processed carbohydrates. Every adult needs 50 grams of protein to process the micronutrients and macronutrients consumed in order to be healthy and have energy. Without them, your body is starving and will store any food possible as fat in adipose tissue. So even if you cut down to 1000 calories, if you don’t get the necessary amount of protein your body needs, your body will store as many of those 1000 calories as possible.

When you get 50 grams of protein every day, your body will stop storing the excess as fat and use it as energy. When you get more than the daily recommended 50 grams of protein, your body is excited and will start to burn away the stored fat because it is getting all it needs plus extra. So eat more. Eat more meat, beans, raw nuts, low fat dairy products, raw fruits and vegetables. The more of these food sources you eat, the more you will stop starving, stop storing fat and start losing stored fat. Stop eating processed foods. They have no nutritional value.

Try 25 grams of protein sources for breakfast, 25 grams for lunch and 25 grams for dinner. Try this for 6 weeks and you will see amazing results. You will have more energy, you will gain muscle tone, your waist size will start to decrease, you will sleep better and so much more. Notice I did not say anything about weight. Remember, you have to stop the storage process and then your body will start to burn the stored fat. This burning of stored fat occurs with the continuation of healthy eating of protein rich foods from all food categories.

You will see results and never starve. You can do it.

Do We Teach People How to Treat Us? -By Brenda McAninch It’s been said that we teach people how to treat us. And, to a large degree, because of the way people in general react to certain behaviors that is true. Perhaps it was that we were led when we were young to shy away from those who appear different from ourselves. After all, what can they do for us? How can we benefit from them? How will we move to the “next level” with them by our sides? This teaching may have come even from well-intentioned mothers and fathers.

There are babies who show defects when born, or even when their only “defect” is being born of the wrong sex, who are not given the chance to survive and live the life they were given by their Creator.

Truth be known, those who make decisions to walk around or away from those who are different, either physically or by their behaviors, gain their feelings of superiority simply by their own exterior looks. Fears, secrets, and prejudices dwell within. They choose to be safe by not revealing any “differences” they may have.

I do not believe it is we who teach others how to treat us. I believe it was the One who dwelt among us who chose to reach out to those who were different who, by the actions of others or thoughts of their own, developed a spirit that was crushed. He showed us that if anyone wants to be healed, he can be through reaching for Jesus, the Christ.

It was the woman who reached for the robe of Jesus who was healed. (Matthew 9:20-22)

It was the man who lay ill on his pallet for years who threw it aside because he wanted to walk while Jesus was there for him. It was the beggar outside the Temple who said to Jesus that he could not be healed because his friends would not pick him up and place him in the waters. Jesus asked him “Do you want to get well?” letting him know one must have the desire within to seek healing. Jesus is the One who shows us how to treat others John 5:1-17.

It is a challenge to include those who are “different” among our circles. Why should we?

What’s in it for us? Can we advance ourselves?

Will we be better off? Maybe not. But walking away, when they have mastered the courage to seek, only compounds thoughts that the acceptance by the Jesus we claim is not theirs to have. They may not allow themselves to seek wholeness, because we who claim Jesus, walk away.

Christ showed us that we may not be able to heal and save everyone within our sight, but He showed us that kindness and forgiveness that we can exhibit, without pity in our attitude, might lead others and even ourselves to a path of healing.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

FEELING GOOD ON FOOD

By Tracey Doctor The food that we are blessed to eat are essential to enjoying a long and healthy life. Keep in mind, that many foods we eat on a daily basis are not always full of nutritional value.

Choosing and eating the right foods may help increase your life expectancy and your quality of life, adding to your health and well-being for the long term.

These are great foods designed to give you energy, vitality and all around good health.

1. Fruits and Berries – are filled with many antioxidants which fight free radical damage in the body and reduce the risk of cancer. Berries such as blueberries and grapes have the highest amount of antioxidants. But choose an array of nutritious fruits in a wide variety of colors for maximum health.

The antioxidants in berries and fruit such as Acai berries, strawberries, pomegranates and black berries, boost the immune system to fight the effects of aging in the body.

2. Beans – (kidney, navy, lentils, chickpeas, Northern) are high in protein.

This is plant protein so it contains very little fat, carbs and calories. If fiber is a problem in your diet, eating a healthy portion of beans each day can in many cases keep your digestive system healthy.

3. Oatmeal – lowers blood cholesterol. Full of antioxidants, and has been shown to boost the immune system. You can make it yourself with rolled oats or eat the instant kind if you are in a hurry, but watch the sugar content. Oatmeal is very filling and also provides much needed fiber to keep satisfied for many hours.

4. Allium foods – including garlic, onions, leeks and shallots.

Garlic is known for lowering cholesterol. Many vegetables help guard against the risk of cancer and many other ailments, helping to lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots. Eating these power packed vegetables in their natural state especially garlic increases many of the health benefits.

5. Salmon – Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of heart disease and other conditions. Wild salmon is a fatty fish but it contains good fats that has been proven to improve health in children and adults. Salmon is rich in protein excellent for use to build muscle tissue.

6. Flax seed – Like salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids.

These seeds also contain omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids which are excellent for helping with high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. Ground flax seed can be added to fruit smoothies, sprinkled in yogurt, eaten with cereal or added to corn bread or pancake mix to name a few.

7. Peppers – are tasty, colorful, and low in calories. They contain antioxidants like beta-carotene and Vitamin C. Peppers range from mild and sweet to very hot. All peppers contain a substance called capsaicin, which has the properties of an anti-inflammatory, a pain reliever, lowers cancer risk, and heart disease. They are good in salads, salsa and all sorts of dishes.

8. Nuts are high in fat but those fats are the good kind.

Peanuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and pistachios are all providers of good fats and protein. Enriching your diet with sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds, help to lower cholesterol and are a great energy source.

9. Yogurt – The fat free variety is good for you. Yogurt contains calcium, Vitamin B, and protein. If you don’t drink milk, yogurt is an alternative to get your calcium in to build strong bones and teeth. Live yogurt also contains friendly bacteria to help promote a healthy digestive system.

BECOMING A FOOL . . . THE IRRATIONAL CALL OF GOD

If you’re alive, you have breath. If that breath has ever been taken away, even for a moment, you have a testimony. In the fall of 2008, after a decade of hard work, I had a successful business, high income, great investments and no bad debt. By January of 09, within 100 days, I'd lost it all, was in overwhelming debt, and my entire financial structure had collapsed squarely on top of me and my family. Ten years of effort left me with nothing it seemed but guilt, fear, and shame.

Since then, there have been days with no groceries and no way to buy them, days of not knowing where we would sleep, days of marriage held by a thread and depression held by a rope, and even days of watching extended family place material wealth above our need. And some of the longest days were spent watching our prodigal son reject us, and all that we embody.

So, like many who’ve been breathing a while, I’ve also been crushed under the weight of God’s course correcting presence and held there. Though it continued to steal my breath, it saved my life by teaching my soul to rest. Because sometimes God allows our own subtle will to become a wilderness, not that we should beg, but that we would tire of laboring for answers; and listen instead to the beat of His heart by simply resting against it.

It’s within that context that I became an Extravagant Fool – a man who sat down when the world around him shouted “Get up, strive on and fight the good fight, if not for your own dignity, at least for the good of your family!” For in the tradition of Noah, Abraham, Moses and Esther, all the way to Mary, Peter and Paul, I’d become an offense to anyone who navigates life by any form of common sense, resting the entire welfare of my family – down to our most basic needs – completely and literally, on the promises of God, instead of my own understanding.

As a result of that decision, I learned to clearly detect the Father’s delicate instruction, and to boldly move with its often irrational call to action; which ultimately led to an astonishing revelation of His specific purpose for my life. And consequently, with every step of foolish-faith taken, I watched the impossible fall to its knees before Him, and submit to His very uncommon, better-than-I-could-imagine plan.

It’s a great story! One you’ll have to read the book – The Extravagant Fool – to fully appreciate. One that will inspire and encourage you with living proof of just how willing our Father is to accomplish amazing things through us, if we’ll simply learn to rest in His arms like happy children, and listen.

But it all begins with a willingness to go against convention – to lean not upon our own understanding – and be counted a fool by the world and its standards. Here’s an excerpt from Chapter One of The Extravagant Fool, featuring one of the early moments of my struggle when all seemed lost – including our home (just moments from auction), all our possessions, and my identity as the one who provided it all. Yet by God’s infinite wisdom, it was a perfectly timed epiphany where God began revealing to me that there are essentially two kinds of fools, as well exposing the subtle difference between the two.

(Chapter One) Two Kinds of Fools: “Okay, God . . . it’s Your move. People say they’re afraid to ask God to do whatever it takes, or pray the “I’ll do anything” prayer. But we were asking a different question, praying a different prayer — “God, there is nothing left for us to do — now what?” Résumés and rental inquiries flew from the keyboard and printer, but nothing returned — no olive branches or answers from God, and no calls from potential employers.

I sat in my car regularly for weeks to escape the absurdity of home — a new home worth only half its purchase price. Behind every open door lingered the aromas of oak floor, fresh paint, and new carpet. We’d only lived there a year. My faith reclined behind the wheel of the driver’s seat as people rushed in and out of Target with expensive coffee and small children. Where did they live? I wondered, as I considered how a family of five might sleep, there on my fully reclined seats. There were different parking lots and different passersby, but no escape for me, as absurdity, it seemed, was a moving cloud with my name on it. With kids as healthy as sunshine, a devoted wife, and no boils to scrape, my suffering was inconsequential next to Job’s.

But I couldn’t help wondering how he would handle such a mess as mine. I never doubted that God loved me, but I also believed that His love and care were based on my behavior. Oh, it’s easy to say the opposite, but deep down there are few of us who don’t trip over our own foibles and consider the pain of fixing-it-oneself to be a kind of “holy” responsibility.

At one point, after studying the Bible for several hours, I began to feel a sense of encouragement that God was revealing something about my own “holy” responsibility, and I was eventually drawn to this verse.

“Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.” 1 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV) Through this verse God revealed to me that there are essentially two kinds of fools — one who says (or lives as if) there is no God, and one who lives as if there’s nothing worthwhile outside of God. Which is a clear-cut distinction that forces us to choose between the two, immediately.

Until that moment, I had always believed I was the right kind of fool, but after further meditation, I began to see things a little more clearly. For instance, becoming a genuine fool for God is as simple for many believers as taking the moral high ground by remaining humble in an argument, or avoiding worldly practices such as dishonesty, greed, selfishness, and the like. While at the same time, we engage in less obvious practices, such as leaning on our own understanding, applying moderation to our faith in God, making our decisions by the spirit of fear and calling it wisdom, or even placing the desires of our spouses or children above God — and the list goes on. So as far as I could discern, especially through the eyes of our circumstances, merely avoiding the obvious and calling it godly foolishness wasn’t enough.

But becoming a genuine fool for God, and gaining true wisdom from His Spirit, required the willingness to let go of one’s own understanding and go against the tide of popular ideas that seem sensible on the surface, but underneath remain inadvertently swayed by things outside of God. It was at this critical moment in my life when I could finally see that the bottom line was about making the right choice — deciding which type of fool to become, and either wasting my life for God or simply wasting it.”

Houston Firefighter and former United States Marine CAPTAIN “IRON BILL” – WHEELS FOR BILL

WE NEED YOUR HELP Houston Fire Department Captain William “Iron Bill” Dowling was crushed and burned while responding to a 5-Alarm fire at the Southwest Inn on May 31, 2013. Bill’s life and that of his family’s was forever changed that day. Both of Bill’s legs were amputated and he suffered several other life threatening injures. But Bill and his wife, Jacki, are SURVIVORS along with their three children. Jacki, a school teacher, left her job to help Bill recover. Bill’s determination has brought him a long way in his therapy. But, transportation for him is challenging because Bill cannot sit for long periods of time and has to lay down for much of his day.

Bill’s friends want to provide them a specialized transportation RV that would enable Bill to lay down for travelling and has some of the basics including a restroom, a refrigerator for medications and would enable him to maintain his health while on the road.

Stitched Together On January 17, 2015, a multigenerational group of women met to sew crib sheets for the Tomball Pregnancy Center. The day began with a short devotional by Linda and was followed by a short presentation by Kelly Bursmith, the Executive Director of the Center. After that the sewing machines began to buzz and whirl! We had a blast making 19 crib sheets and some other items. We laughed; we learned from each other; we ate; we bonded…we truly became “stitched together.” And there is more to come!

We’ll be gathering again on April 25, from 9 – 2, to sew nursing covers for the Center. We are also working to put together a Saturday in July to offer basic sewing instructions in a workshop type setting. For the fall we are developing ideas for ornaments to be made and given out during the Tomball Christmas Festival. For next year we will continue to sew for the Tomball Pregnancy Center but also plan to expand by making pillowcase dresses for Little Dresses for Africa.

How can you help? Currently, we are in need of:

Lightweight fabrics (minimum 1 -1/4 yard lengths) for the nursing covers.

This would include quilting cotton, seersucker, and pique.

We welcome women from our local area to join us, too…becoming “stitched together” as a community.

This healthy green is full of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals.

Spinach has an extremely high nutritional value and is rich in antioxidants. It is a good source of vitamins A, B2, C and K, and also contains magnesium, manganese, folate, iron, calcium and potassium.

Remember Popeye squeezing those cans of spinach into his mouth and instantly developing muscles and super strength.

Well, he was also protecting himself against illnesses and boosting his immunity.

This is a heart-healthy food. The antioxidants in spinach work to keep cholesterol from oxidizing. Its nutritional properties are good for a healthy cardiovascular system and helps to lower high blood pressure.

Gastrointestinal health can be shielded by eating more spinach. The beta-carotene and vitamin C work to protect the cells of the body’s colon from the harmful effects of free radicals. Also, DNA damage and mutations in colon cells may be prevented by the folate that’s present in this green leafy vegetable.

Inflammatory conditions such as: arthritis, osteoporosis, migraine headaches, and asthma, may be helped because of the antiinflammatory properties of some of the nutrients found in spinach.

Studies have shown that consumption of green leafy vegetables such as spinach may slow the age-related decline in brain function.

Lutein, a carotenoid found in spinach that is protective against eye diseases such as age-related cataracts and macular degeneration.

The mineral iron is particularly important for menstruating women and growing children and adolescents. In comparison to red meat, spinach provides a lot less calories, is fat and cholesterol free, and an excellent source of iron. Because iron is a component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to all body cells, it’s needed for good energy and for those strong muscles to keep on moving!

SAVORY SPINACH SALAD INGREDIANTS 1 bunch fresh leaf spinach ½ cup walnuts 2 boiled eggs 1 tsp cracked pepper corn ¼ cup tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 3 tsp apple cider vinegar ¼ cup red bell pepper ¼ cup red onion ¼ cup zucchini ½ cup fresh mushrooms 2 crushed garlic cloves 2 slices of crispy cooked bacon Directions: Heat skillet adding a drizzle of olive oil, toss in rinsed mushrooms, garlic, cooked bacon, and walnuts. Bring to a quick seer, take off burner and set aside.

Prepare veggies by rinsing and removing stems, chop, or dice. Place in salad bowls and set aside.

Top with the items heated and cold sliced boiled eggs. Heat skillet on low, adding remainder olive oil, vinegar, and pepper corn. Once fused, pour over salad.

For croutons: in mixing bowl, add ¼ cup olive oil, 1 tsp dried parmesan ½ tsp dried basil, and toss chopped up baguette, place on cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.

There’s No Place like Home – A Word from the Publisher Many have not had the horrid experience of being homeless. For those that have, it is one that brings much shame, loneliness, and a sense of disconnectedness with the world. It is probably one of the worst conditions to a human soul outside of losing all senses.

I was sitting on my back porch one day enjoying the sun, and watching newborn lambs frolicking in the fields behind us when I noticed in my side view something approaching me. I turned with a sigh to see that it was yet another stray cat left behind in our neighborhood. We have a real problem with this. There are strays everywhere. We are lovers of God’s creation and have taken in, sheltered, fostered, and kept more pets then we can afford to feed at times. I think these strays have our house confused with Noah’s Ark. However, this particular one has adopted us as her family. We have tried to persuade her to live elsewhere being we already have a house full of beloved pets. Her name is Shirley, my children named her when their hearts broke as she howled at our front door “Let me-o-w-in” and decided that “Surely” we were going to take care of her. It happened to be an unusually cold winter for our usual sauna of a state. It was raining, windy, and poor kitty was homeless. We took her in and noticed she had been badly attacked by another animal. My children immediately grabbed some towels, ointment, and began doctoring her up.

This kitty was ever so grateful to be tucked inside the Graff infirmary. Over the course of weeks she began to heal, and initiate attempts to eat my birds, and then the fish. She didn’t succeed, but came pretty close as we caught her pawing her way into the top of a cage, or trying to lift the lid to the fish tank. Shirley didn’t quite grasp what the others pets knew, and that was to live in this house, you must not prey on each other for meals. There is always plenty of food in the pantry for each species.

Well, Shirley had to surely be put outside. She is fed, and still let in to warm at night for safety reasons. However, as I watched her slink across the grass that afternoon hesitantly towards the porch and looking up at me, I noticed an expression on her face as if to say, “Is this my home? Can I come closer? Is it okay to sit by you? Or are you going to shun me?” My heart sank, when I saw the look of intimidation in her eyes. She had obviously experienced some real trauma prior to landing on our doorstep. She quietly jumped up onto a chair and continued to look at me for approval. Tears filled my eyes as I thought of this in a human perspective. How many times have we driven or walked past the homeless without so much as acknowledging them? They stand on the street corners begging, and yet drivers won’t even look in their direction, praying the light turns green quickly. Not being acknowledged is worse than being gawked at. Don’t you know this brings indignity to them? They are humiliated, and already feel they are not worthy of society doing whatever it is they have to just to survive, without having the added disgrace poured on their heads. They want to feel at home. They desire a family to call their own. Some, became that way due to circumstances beyond their control. I’ve spoken to a few when stopping to assist, and found that most ended up there through divorce, abandonment, becoming a widower, addictions due to other horrific circumstances, abuse, and or mental conditions. Some fought wars for our freedom, and now they’re imprisoned with illness on the street. Some gave up their whole lives in battle and now their battling to stay alive in this pit.

The trauma and ill-health of living conditions on the street are no match for one’s mind or soul. There are more women and children living on the streets than ever these days. There are over 5,000 currently homeless in the Houston and surrounding areas. When we were collecting jackets, and socks for Star of Hope Missions, it was sad to find that there were so many still out in the cold, and sleeping under whatever space they could find to get warm. Star of Hope hits the streets to hand out items for warmth to the homeless during treacherous weather. So we were working with many others to get more articles of warmth. It was difficult getting donations for our coat drive locally. Even during the month of December (the most giving season of the year), people just didn’t respond as much as we had hoped. There were other businesses that got involved, but the residents in our surrounding areas weren’t jumping so quickly on the bandwagon.

I believe that there is much prejudice when it comes to the homeless. Many have fallen prey to the impostors on the corners of highways, and byways. Or some may feel that they deserve to be on the streets for lack of job search. Yet, let me ask you…how can one get a job interview and pass one without transportation…or with such an odorous infliction from lack of bathing facilities? Once the streets become a home for some, it begins a vicious cycle. It becomes a pit of fear, anxiety, ill effects, and unspeakable offers of humiliating acts to provide for oneself or feed a child, and most often substance abuse. No one knows how it is until you have actually experienced it. So before you quickly pass by another homeless, look them in the eye, see what God sees, and you will be surprised at what you will find, a real living soul in need of love, and mercy. I know, because I’ve been one.
