Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners,
The Breman’s vision of a community filled with respect and understanding is supported by its mission to connect people to Jewish history, culture, and arts. A major initiative of our strategic plan is to expand The Breman’s identity to become a cultural center and gathering place for the community while retaining its core purpose as a museum. Over the last year, we have been busy behind the scenes working with respected museum consultant Gallagher & Associates to develop a dynamic new vision for our physical space that forms a more contemporary vision as a progressive, futureoriented institution, as well as visitor experiences that helps us connect with the hearts and minds of both new and existing audiences.
As part of this work, we have also continued to build and grow our network of strategic partners to expand the reach of our mission. Our multi-year collaboration with Ballethnic Dance Company has resulted in multiple performances of “Jazzing: Memoirs in Jazz,” based on the photography of Herb Snitzer, at venues throughout Metro Atlanta including the Alliance Theatre. Our inaugural Jewish Diversity of Arts Showcase, presented in partnership with the Atlanta Jews of Color Council and Jewish Community Relations Council of Atlanta, showcased underrepresented voices and celebrated the diversity of our
local Jewish community. And the Weinberg Center’s collaboration with Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education provides educators with valuable resources for teaching the Holocaust and combating the rise of antisemitism.
We will have more exciting developments to share with you as our planning develops, but the first big change you’ll notice is in this very document—our new visual look created with the help of Atlantabased Matchstic brand identity firm. We are very excited about our new brand strategy which is built upon the position statement: “The Breman is where story keepers and story seekers share the wonder of Jewish experience.” Our new logo—the dynamic “B”—and wordmark define The Breman experience, unify our look across all touchpoints, and are instantly recognizable.
More than just a makeover, this new vision will transform how The Breman is known in the community, foster opportunities for engagement, and expand the possibilities for connection and conversation with diverse audiences who may discover that they have more in common with the Jewish experience than they previously thought. Looking forward, more exciting changes are on the horizon and we hope that you will join us on the journey.

The atrocities of the Holocaust should never be forgotten—and neither should the moments of resiliency and resourcefulness that carried many Jewish people to the other side. The stories that we collect, preserve, and share are instrumental in educating people across the Southeast through a host of immersive experiences, including guided tours of our Holocaust exhibit, advanced training through our Summer Teacher Institute, and story-sharing with Holocaust survivors. Our hope is that people of all ages can learn about—and find a personal connection with—one of humanity’s most significant moments in time.

The Summer Institute for Teaching the Holocaust (June 4-6, 2023) served more than 50 educators from two countries, nine states, and 13 Georgia counties. Presented in partnership with Kennesaw State University, the three-day event provided in-depth seminars on topics central to understanding and teaching the Holocaust.

The 58th Annual Yom HaShoah Community-Wide Holocaust Commemoration on April 16, 2023 included the story of the Memorial to the Six Million at Greenwood Cemetery. This year’s featured speaker was Ilse Eichner Reiner, a survivor of Theresienstadt. Of 15,000 child prisoners there, she was one of the 100 who survived only to be deported to Auschwitz and was eventually liberated after a miraculous escape from a death march. Also in attendance was Sen. Jon Ossoff and Consul General Anat Sultan-Dodan of Israel. As story keepers of Jewish traditions, history, and heritage, we are home to the largest collection of Jewish archives in the Southeast. Much more than a collection of relics—these manuscripts, photographs, artifacts, textiles, and oral histories weave together multi-layered memories that connect us with our past. Whether you’re here to learn about your ancestry or to research Jewish life in the South, everyone is welcome to get up close and personal with an ever-evolving collection of stories that shaped who we are today.

Recent Accomplishments
• Added to our collection of historic materials from Savannah including a 1884 petition to create an Orthodox synagogue Chebrah Talmud Torah, photographs and articles related to the Jewish Educational Alliance boxing team, local synagogues, and more.
• Received a subgrant from the Digital Libraries of Georgia to digitize our collection of Leo Frank material as a means of preservation and making them publicly accessible.
• Established a new partnership with Kennesaw State University on an oral history project documenting Congregation Bet Haverim in Atlanta.
• Completed a second year in the Council of American Jewish Museums’ Collecting These Times oral history project where we documented stories from Atlanta Jews about the pandemic and social justice topics. This project allowed us to diversify our oral history collection and make it more inclusive and representative of the entire Atlanta Jewish population.

ICONS: Selections from The Portrait Unbound, Photography of Robert Weingarten showcased Weingarten’s innovative and groundbreaking visual biographies of notable American icons including Henry Aaron, Stephen Sondheim, Sandra Day O’Connor, Colin Powell, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Alice Waters. A bold departure from traditional portraiture, layers of images create a mosaic that alludes to interests, achievements, and memories in the subjects’ life. Exhibition-related events included:

On November 13, 2022, The Breman, Atlanta Jews of Color Council, and Jewish Community Relations Council of Atlanta presented the Jewish Diversity of Arts Showcase, a community-wide event dedicated to exploring emerging voices and celebrating the multiplicity of Jewish identity. The showcase uplifted the voices, stories, and experiences of local Jews of Color through performance, visual arts, and a roundtable panel discussion on mental health.
