Preface In 2015, the Berlin Philharmonic Winds commissioned me to write a chamber music arrangement with motifs from Humperdinck’s famous opera. The envisaged scoring for ten with flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns and double bass1 had a lot to offer, soundwise – however, with the required brief playing time of about 7 minutes, I was faced with the difficult task of having to focus on just a few themes. Similar to Bizet’s Carmen, the opera Hänsel and Gretel owes its popularity to a musical grip that only a few composers were able to develop. Ingenious ideas meet in high concentration, many of which have become classical “hits”. Moreover, Humperdinck’s work is dramaturgically and technically so coherent that as an arranger I had to think very carefully about where and how I could tackle the arrangement without mutilating a work full of wide musical arcs. In the end, I opted for a dramaturgical cohesion in the arrangement; quasi a pocket-sized instrumental fairy tale emerged. After a version of the wonderful overture, we

hear the children’s songs of the merry siblings Hansel and Gretel. Subsequently, their father comes home, halfdrunk to endure his life in poverty. Since it is known, what the parents inflict on the siblings, I have taken the liberty of going straight to the rumbling witch ride. And because the story must end well, the gruff witch is carefully stowed away in her oven. That in turn leads to the jubilant finale. It is of course completely correct and necessary that Humperdinck took a lot more time for this fairy tale. However, as an extract from a great work, this arrangement for wind ensemble with double bass can have a fascinating effect, because Humperdinck’s ideas are so ingenious that they can stand this kind of shortening quite easily. Vorwort 2015 gaben mir die Bläser der Berliner Philharmoniker den Auftrag, eine kammermusikalische Bearbeitung mit Motiven aus Humperdincks berühmter Oper zu schreiben. Die angedachte Zehnerbesetzung mit Flöte, 2 Oboen, 2 Klarinetten, 2 Fagotten, 2 Hörnern und Kontrabass1 bot einiges an klanglichen Möglichkeiten – allerdings stellte mich die geforderte übersichtliche Spieldauer von etwa 7 Minuten vor die schwierige Aufgabe, mich auf wenige Themen reduzieren zu müssen. Ähnlich wie Bizets Carmen verdankt die Oper Hänsel und Gretel ihre Beliebtheit einer musikalischen Griffigkeit, die nur wenige Komponisten entwickeln konnten. In hoher Konzentration begegnen sich originelle Einfälle, von denen etliche klassische „Hits“ geworden sind. Außerdem ist Humperdincks Werk dramaturgisch wie handwerklich derart schlüssig angelegt, dass ich mir als Arrangeur sehr gut überlegen musste, wo und wie ich mit der Bearbeitung ansetzen konnte, ohne ein Werk voller großer musikalischer Bögen zu verstümmeln. Schließlich habe ich mich für einen dramaturgischen Zusammenhalt in der Bearbeitung entschieden; es ist sozusagen ein instrumentales Märchen im Taschenformat entstanden. Nach einer Fassung der wunderschönen

Ouver­ türe hören wir die Kinderlieder der vergnügten Geschwister Hänsel und Gretel. Anschließend kommt der Vater nach Hause, der deutlich angetrunken ist, um sein Leben in Armut zu ertragen. Da nun jeder weiß, was den beiden von ihren Eltern im Folgenden zugemutet wird, habe ich mir erlaubt, direkt in den rumpelnden Hexenritt überzugehen. Und weil die Geschichte gut ausgehen muss, wird die ruppige Hexe noch sorgsam in ihrem Ofen verstaut. Das wiederum führt zum jubelnden Finale. Es ist selbstverständlich völlig richtig und notwendig, dass Humperdinck sich für dieses Märchen deutlich mehr Zeit genommen hat. Aber als Extrakt aus einem großen Werk kann diese Bearbeitung für Bläser-Ensemble mit Kontrabass durchaus eine reizvolle Wirkung entfalten, denn Humperdincks Einfälle sind so genial, dass sie diese Art der Verkürzung fast problemlos aushalten.
