Vorwort
Von François Devienne (1759–1803) wird behauptet, er habe schon im Alter von zehn Jahren eine Messe komponiert. In seiner Jugend war er Flötist im Regiment Royal Cravate und stand später im Dienst des Kardinals de Rohan. 1784 wurde er Mitglied der Freimaurerloge Olympique und Musiker in der Schweizergarde. Er unterrichtete am Pariser Conservatoire und war von 1789 bis zu seinem Tod als erster Fagottist im Théâtre de Monsieur angestellt. Devienne war sehr geschätzt: als Lehrer, Flöten- und Fagottvirtuose sowie als Komponist von Kammermusik. Seine Zeitgenossen bewunderten den eleganten, anmutigen melodischen Einfallsreichtum seiner Kompositionen und deren ausbalancierte Form. Er komponierte elf Opéras comiques und Singspiele, Symphonien und Sinfonie concertanti, Solokonzerte, Quartette, Trios, Duette, Sonaten, vor allem für Holzbläser (Flöte, Klarinette, Oboe und Fagott), sowie eine Flötenschule (Paris, 1795 ), die mehrfach nachgedruckt wurde.
Die vorliegende Sonate ist die dritte von Six Sonates pour un basson avec accompagnement de basse … œuvre 24, die, vermutlich in den letzten 30 Jahren des 18. Jahrhunderts, bei Sieber in Paris veröffentlicht wurden.
Als Quelle für diese Ausgabe diente ein Exemplar der Originalausgabe aus der Bibliothek des Conservatoire Royal in Brüssel. Offenkundige Fehler wurden verbessert, notwendige Akzidenzien ergänzt, überflüssige getilgt. Alle Ergänzungen des Herausgebers sind im Notentext durch Klammern ( ) oder gestrichelte Bögen gekennzeichnet.
Die Aussetzung der unbezifferten Bassstimme wurde vom Herausgeber bewusst schlicht angelegt. Sie versteht sich als Vorschlag, den der Continuospieler stilistisch abändern kann.
Preface
At the early age of ten, François Devienne (1759–1803) is reputed to have composed a mass. In his youth he was a flautist in the Royal Cravate Regiment and he later entered the service of Cardinal de Rohan. In 1784, he became a bandsman of the Olympic Masonic Lodge and a musician in the Swiss Guard. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire and from 1789 to his death he was principal bassoon in the Théâtre de Monsieur.
Devienne was much sought after as a teacher, virtuoso on flute and bassoon and composer of chamber music. His contemporaries praised the graceful, charming melodic ingenuity of his compositions and their elegant construction.
He wrote eleven comic operas and operettas, symphonies and sinfonie concertanti, concertos, quartets, trios, duets, sonatas, especially for wind instruments, and a flute tutor (Paris, 1795), which was reprinted a number of times.
The present Sonata is the third of Six Sonates pour un basson avec accompagnement de basse ... œuvre 24, which were published by Sieber in Paris, probably in the last thirty years of the 18th century.
The source document for this edition is a copy of the original publication in the Library of the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels. Wrong notes have been corrected according to context, and accidentals added where necessary, or omitted where superfluous. All editorial additions to the musical text have been indicated by the use of ( ) or broken slurs.
The deliberately simple and unpretentious realization of the unfigured bass is to be taken as the suggestion by the editor, and stylistic changes may be made by the continuo player.
