Diese Variationen über „Happy Birthday to You“ entstanden – wie könnte es anders sein – anlässlich eines Geburtstages: Eine nette Kollegin war mit einem hervorragenden Flötisten bekannt. Sie hatte eine Zwillingsschwester, die wiederum mit einem guten Oboisten befreundet war. Also, zwei Geburtstagskinder und zwei Melodieinstrumente – was lag da näher, als ein Dutzend Gratulationen für diese Besetzung zu schreiben.
Unlängst wurden die kleinen Stücke von András Adorján und Marianne Henkel „entdeckt“ und in liebenswerter Weise aufgeführt. Ich freue mich, dass die musikalischen Geburtstagsgrüße nun durch den vorliegenden Druck ein breiteres Publikum erreichen werden.
Eine Viola-Stimme im Bratschenschlüssel, eine Stimme in b-Transposition und eine weitere Stimme im Bassschlüssel wurden hinzugegeben, sodass diese Variationen sehr vielfältig (Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette, Fagott, Sopransaxophon, Violine, Viola, Violoncello usw.) aufgeführt werden können. Mögen sie die Herzen der Geburtstagskinder im Sturm erobern!

These variations on “Happy Birthday to You” came about – well, how else – on the occasion of a birthday: A nice colleague of mine was acquainted with an excellent flutist. Her twin sister was friends with a good oboist. So, two birthday girls and two melody instruments – what was more obvious than to write a dozen congratulations for this line-up. It was not long ago that the little pieces were “discovered” by András Adorján and Marianne Henkel and performed in an endearing way. I am happy that through this edition the musical birthday greetings will now reach a wider audience.
A viola part in viola clef, a part in b-flat transposition and another part in bass clef have been added so that these variations can be performed in a variety of ways (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, soprano saxophone, violin, viola, cello, etc.). May they take the hearts of the birthday boys and girls by storm!
Ulrich Kaiser, Munich
Ulrich Kaiser studierte an der Hochschule der Künste Berlin (heute Universität der Künste) die Studiengänge Gesang (Musiktheater), Chorleitung und Musiktheorie/Gehörbildung. Ab 1982 arbeitete er als freiberuflicher Chorleiter und als Dozent an verschiedenen Institutionen, bis er 1997 einem Ruf als Professor für Musiktheorie an die Hochschule für Musik und Theater München folgte. Ulrich Kaiser übernimmt gelegentliche Verpflichtungen als Sänger. Er veröffentlichte eine CD mit den weltlichen Chorwerken von Johannes Brahms. Seine zahlreichen Aufsätze und Publikationen erscheinen bei verschiedenen Verlagen.
Ulrich Kaiser studied voice (musical theater), choral conducting and music/aural theory at the Berlin College of the Arts (now University of the Arts). From 1982, he worked as a freelance choral conductor and as a lecturer at various institutions until 1997, when he accepted a call to become professor of music theory at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Ulrich Kaiser takes on occasional engagements as a singer. He has released a CD with the secular choral works of Johannes Brahms. His numerous essays and publications appear with various publishers.
