Vorwort Die sechs Triosonaten für Orgel, die Bach um 1730 in einer erhalten gebliebenen Schönschrift vereinte,1 stellen bekanntlich keinen völlig neu komponierten Werkzyklus dar. Ein Teil der insgesamt achtzehn Sätze basiert auf älterem Material, das für den neuen Kontext und für die neue Besetzung umgearbeitet wurde. Die vierte Sonate in e-moll (BWV 528) stellt in dieser Hinsicht den einfachsten Fall dar: Zum ersten Satz liegt eine Kantatensinfonia von 1723 (BWV 76/8) als Frühfassung vor, der Mittelteil ist als einzelstehendes Orgelstück in wenigstens zwei Frühfassungen vorhanden (BWV 528/2), während der Schlusssatz die Fassungsgeschichte von Präludium und Fuge G-dur BWV 541 betrifft. Jedoch erweist sich die scheinbar auf der Hand liegende und auch oft verteidigte These, BWV 528 sei eine Zusammenstellung verschiedener Einzelsätze – noch weiter bestärkt durch die Tatsache, dass der Mittelteil in der in Instrumentalzyklen nur selten verwendeten Molldominante steht – bei näherer Betrachtung als unbegründet. Vielmehr weisen die drei Sätze ein derart dichtes Netz von Beziehungen bezüglich Form, Thematik und Proportion auf, dass hinsichtlich ihrer engen Zusammengehörigkeit kein Zweifel bestehen kann.2 Im Gegensatz zur bisherigen Ansicht stellt die Sinfonia, die den zweiten Teil der Kantate „Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes“ (BWV 76) eröffnet, keine Neukomposition dar, sondern ist einer älteren Komposition entlehnt, welche sich aufgrund von stilistischen Kriterien auf ca. 1714 datieren lässt (das am nächsten verwandte Werk ist die Sinfonia der im Dezember 1714 entstandenen Kantate „Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn“ BWV 152). Die gleiche zeitliche Einordnung erlaubt der Stil des (dem ersten Satz formal wie stilistisch besonders nahe stehenden) Mittelsatzes der Triosonate, dessen „Weimarer“ Hintergrund aufgrund der frühesten der überlieferten d-mollFassungen deutlich erkennbar ist (siehe Rekonstruktionsbericht). Der Schlusssatz unserer Sonate ist dagegen ausschließlich in der endgültigen Gestalt BWV 528/3 überliefert. Obwohl er unübersehbar der reifste Satz ist, gehört er ohne Zweifel zum gleichen stilistischen Umfeld wie die beiden anderen.

Die hier vorgelegte Rekonstruktion seiner Originalgestalt ist – im Gegensatz zu der der ersten zwei Sätze – von eher hypothetischem Charakter (Näheres dazu im Rekonstruktionsbericht).

Mit dieser Ausgabe wird eine Ensemblesonate aus der mittleren Weimarer Zeit wieder greifbar, die für die Besetzung von Oboe, Viola da gamba (oder Viola?) und Basso continuo konzipiert war. Dies ist umso wertvoller, da sie aus einer Periode Bachs stammt, aus der nur wenige instrumentale Kammermusikwerke überliefert sind; bisher könnten lediglich die Fuge für Violine und Basso continuo g-moll BWV 1026 sowie die Sonate für Violine und Basso continuo e-moll BWV 1023 mit einiger Sicherheit dazugerechnet werden. Somit bildet die Triosonate BWV 528a eine wesentliche Bereicherung, sowohl für unser Bild von Bachs Weimarer Schaffen als auch für das Repertoire mit gemischter instrumentaler Besetzung.

Eng verwoben mit der Rekonstruktion der originalen Besetzung und Entstehungszeit ist die Frage der ursprünglichen Tonart. Die Sonate teilt nämlich mit Bachs (frühen) Weimarer Kantaten die Problematik der verschiedenen Stimmtonhöhen zwischen Streichern und Orgel einerseits und Holzbläsern andererseits. Bachs Weimarer Orgel und die daran angepassten

Streichinstrumente waren im traditionellen Chorton gestimmt (etwa einen halben Ton über der heutigen Tonhöhe: a1 um 465 Hz), während die aus Frankreich stammenden neuen Holzblasinstrumente im „französischen“, tiefen Kammerton spielten (etwa einen Ganzton unter der heutige Tonhöhe: a1 um 392 Hz). Der daraus resultierende Unterschied einer kleinen Terz kann in den Quellen vieler Weimarer Kantaten beobachtet werden (in unserem Zusammenhang allen voran bei der Kantate BWV 152) und lag wohl auch der Urfassung der Sonate BWV 528 zugrunde, wobei die Viola da gamba und der Basso continuo in e-moll spielten, während die Oboe in g-moll notiert war. Diese Mischung der Tonarten ist in der autographen Niederschrift der Sinfonia BWV 76/8 dokumentiert, wobei Bach die Tatsache ausnutzte, dass die neue Leipziger Oboe d’amore eine kleine Terz tiefer stand und das Stück daher ohne Weiteres auch in Leipzig gespielt werden konnte, mit sämtlichen Instrumenten einheitlich im Kammerton (etwa einen halben Ton unter der heutigen Tonhöhe: a1 um 415 Hz).

Der Oboe d’amore-Spieler spielte also nach wie vor in g-moll (Griffschrift), die anderen Spieler nach wie vor in e-moll.

Anhand dieses eigentümlichen Hintergrunds lassen sich folgende Musiziermöglichkeiten für diese Sonate ableiten, die unsere Ausgabe dementsprechend anbietet: A: die „gemischte“ Fassung in g-moll/e-moll mit der Oboe (a1 um 392 Hz) in g-moll sowie Viola da gamba und Basso continuo (a1 um 465 Hz) in e-moll; B: eine Fassung in e-moll mit Oboe d’amore, Viola da gamba und Basso continuo (wobei der Continuospieler aus der [bezifferten] Continuostimme musiziert); C: eine Fassung in g-moll mit Oboe, Viola und Basso continuo (wobei der Continuospieler entweder aus der Partitur oder aus der [bezifferten] Continuostimme spielt).

Möglichkeit A, die vermutlich der Weimarer Originalfassung entspricht, wird sich heute wohl lediglich in Ausnahmefällen realisieren lassen. Die beiden anderen Möglichkeiten stellen aber durchaus plausible und aus der Fassungsgeschichte der Sonate heraus begründbare Alternativen dar. In der Fassung in g-moll (Möglichkeit C) liegt die Gambenstimme stellenweise zu hoch und lässt sich besser auf der Viola darstellen – eine Instrumentierung der Mittelstimme, welche sich zudem auch nicht völlig als die ursprünglich intendierte ausschließen lässt.

Größere Authentizität kann aber Lösung B beanspruchen, welche dichter an A bleibt; diese Fassung mit Oboe d’amore ist für den ersten Satz durch die Überlieferung in der Kantate 76 belegt. Dank dieses neuen Instrumentes konnte Bach die ganze Sonate in Leipzig ohne Weiteres aus den Weimarer Stimmen spielen – und hat das höchstwahrscheinlich auch so gemacht!

Schließlich sei noch auf die Möglichkeit hingewiesen, nach barocker Praxis die Oboe durch eine Violine (bei Verwendung moderner Instrumente auch durch eine Querflöte) zu ersetzen oder die Stimmen von Oboe und Basso continuo auf dem Cembalo zusammenzufassen, womit eine durchaus wirkungsvolle Fassung für Viola und Cembalo obbligato entsteht3 – alles Varianten nach der in der Partitur gedruckten g-mollFassung der Sonate.

Im Notentext ist für jeden Satz, dem unterschiedlichen Dokumentationsstand entsprechend, eine andere Primärquelle zugrundegelegt.4 Der Rekonstruktionsbericht erläutert dabei ausführlich die editorischen Entscheidungen. Der Druck

Preface As we know today, the six sonatas for organ which Bach compiled around 1730 into a fair copy1 (still extant today) do not represent a work cycle that was newly composed in its entirety.

Some of the altogether 18 movements were based on earlier material that was revised for its new context and new scoring.

Sonata No. 4 in E minor (BWV 528) seems the clearest in this respect: a cantata sinfonia of 1723 (BWV 76/8) documents an early version of the first movement; the middle section has come down to us as a single-standing organ piece (BWV 528/2) in at least two early versions; and the closing movement is associated with one of the various versions of the Prelude and Fugue in G major BWV 541. The theory that BWV 528 is a compilation of various independent movements – a seemingly obvious and oft-defended theory – appears to be further supported by the fact that the middle movement is in the dominant minor, which Bach rarely uses in instrumental cycles. Upon closer look, however, this conjecture proves to be unfounded. On the contrary, the three movements are so intricately interconnected with respect to form, themes and proportions that there can be no doubt that they belong together.2 Contrary to the view held until now, the Sinfonia that opens the second part of the cantata “Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes” (BWV 76) is not a new work, but was borrowed from an earlier piece that, judging from stylistic criteria, can be dated at ca. 1714 (the most closely related work is the Sinfonia of the cantata “Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn” BWV 152, written in December 1714). The style of the middle movement of the Trio Sonata, which is closely related in form and style to the first movement and whose “Weimar” background can be clearly discerned through the earliest of the transmitted D minor versions (see “Rekonstruktionsbericht” [reconstruction report]), allows the same chronological classification. The final movement of our sonata, in contrast, is transmitted exclusively in its definitive form as BWV 528/3. Although it is un-

mistakably the most mature movement, there can be little doubt that it originated in the same stylistic environment as the other two. The reconstruction of its original form presented here is – contrary to that of the first two movements – of a more hypothetical nature (further information can be found in the “Rekonstruktionsbericht”).

This edition thus brings to light an ensemble sonata from the middle Weimar period, which was conceived for oboe, viola da gamba (or viola?) and basso continuo. It is all the more valuable as it stems from a period of Bach’s life from which only few instrumental chamber works are transmitted. Up to now, only the Fugue for Violin and Basso continuo in G minor BWV 1026 and the Sonata for Violin and Basso continuo in E minor BWV 1023 could be assigned to this period with any degree of certainty. The Trio Sonata BWV 528a thus represents a major contribution both to honing our image of Bach’s Weimar œuvre and to increasing the repertory of works with mixed instrumental scoring.

The question of the work’s original key is closely connected with the reconstruction of the original scoring and its time of origin. The sonata shares with Bach’s (early) Weimar cantatas the problem of the various tuning standards between strings and organ on the one hand, and woodwinds on the other.

While Bach’s Weimar organ and the stringed instruments adapted to it were tuned in the traditional organ pitch (about a semitone higher than the present pitch: a1 = ca. 465 Hz), the new woodwind instruments from France played in the lower, “French” chamber pitch (about a whole tone lower than the present-day pitch: a1 = ca. 392 Hz). The resulting difference of a minor third can be observed in the sources of many Weimar cantatas (in our context, especially in Cantata BWV 152) and no doubt also formed the basis for the original version of the Sonata BWV 528; here the viola da gamba and basso continuo played in E minor, while the oboe was notated in G minor.

This mixture of keys is documented in the autograph transcript

of the Sinfonia BWV 76/8, where Bach exploited the fact that the new Leipzig oboe d’amore was tuned a minor third lower, which allowed the piece to be played without difficulty in Leipzig as well, where all the instruments were uniformly tuned to chamber pitch (about a half tone lower than the present-day pitch: a1 = ca. 415 Hz). The oboe d’amore thus continued to play in G minor (finger notation) and the other instruments in E minor.

Thanks to this truly special background, we can derive the following possibilities of performing this sonata, which are all offered in this edition: A: the “mixed” version in G minor / E minor, with the oboe (a1 = ca. 392 Hz) in G minor and the viola da gamba and basso continuo (a1 = ca. 465 Hz) in E minor; B: an E minor version with oboe d’amore, viola da gamba and basso continuo (here the continuo player performs from the [figured] continuo part); C: a G minor version with oboe, viola and basso continuo (here the continuo player performs either from the score or from the [figured] continuo part).

Possibility A, which presumably corresponds to the original Weimar version, can no doubt be realized today only in exceptional cases. However, the other two possibilities constitute very plausible alternatives, which can be legitimated through the history of the sonata’s different versions. In the G minor version (possibility C), the gamba part is sometimes too high and can be better played on the viola – an instrument, it should be said, that might very well have been intended as the original middle voice. Solution B can, however, claim greater authenticity, as it follows A more closely; this version with oboe d’amore is confirmed for the first movement through its transmission in Cantata 76. This then novel instrument permitted Bach to play the entire sonata in Leipzig from the Weimar parts without any problem – and he most probably did so! Finally, one should also point out the possibility of replacing the oboe with a violin, thus reflecting Baroque practice (or with a flute, when using modern instruments), or of combining the oboe and basso continuo parts on the harpsichord, which gives rise to an effective version for viola and harpsichord obbligato;3 both variants conform with the G-minor version of the sonata printed in the score.

In the musical text, each movement is based on a different primary source in keeping with the heterogeneous state of the documentation.4 The “Rekonstruktionsbericht” provides detailed explanations of the editorial decisions. Mit der Rekonstruktion einer Triosonate nach BWV 528 wird das eher schmale Kammermusik-Repertoire Bachs aus der mittleren Weimarer Zeit erweitert.

Pieter Dirksen geht auf die nachweisbaren Vorlagen der Orgelsonate e-moll BWV 528 zurück: auf die Sinfonia der Kantate BWV 76, auf das Orgelstück BWV 528/2 sowie auf Präludium und Fuge BWV 541 für Orgel. Seine Rekonstruktion greift jedoch noch einen Schritt weiter: mit Kompetenz, Mut und Spürsinn legt Dirksen die offenbar wirkliche Basis der drei eng miteinander verbundenen Sätze frei und gelangt dabei zu einer Triosonate für Oboe (d’amore), Viola (da gamba) und Basso continuo, die sich aufgrund der verschiedenen Instrumente und der verschiedenen historischen Stimmungen (Chorton, Kammerton) sowohl in g-moll wie auch in e-moll realisieren lässt.

This reconstruction of a trio sonata based on BWV 528 expands the rather slender repertoire of Bach’s chamber works from his middle Weimar period.

Pieter Dirksen proceeds from the authenticated sources of the Organ Sonata in E minor BWV 528: the Sinfonia from the Cantata BWV 76, the Organ Piece BWV 528/2 as well as the Prelude and Fugue BWV 541 for organ. His reconstruction goes one step further, however: with competence, courage and flair, Dirksen uncovers the presumably genuine basis of the three closely connected pieces, thus giving rise to a trio sonata for oboe (d’amore), viola (da gamba) and basso continuo.

In consideration of the various instruments and historical tunings (organ and concert pitch), the work can be performed both in G minor as well as in E minor.
