Vorwort Wie viele Werke von Joachim Raff1 gerieten auch seine hier vorgelegten, 1852–53 entstandenen 12 Klavierstücke Frühlingsboten op. 55 bald nach dem Tod des Komponisten weitgehend in Vergessenheit. Erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten belebte sich das Interesse an Raffs umfangreichem Schaffen aufs Neue und führte zur Wiederentdeckung vieler reizvoller Werke.

Mit den Frühlingsboten verband Raff einen hohen Anspruch. Er sah in dieser Sammlung einen kompositorischen Neubeginn und eine Qualitätssteigerung, mit der er seine bis dahin entstandenen und veröffentlichten Klavierwerke hinter sich ließ. Die neue Schaffensperiode, die die Frühlingsboten eröffneten, betrachtete Raff als Folge seines beginnenden Liebesverhältnisses mit Doris Genast, seiner späteren Ehefrau. An sie schrieb er am 12. Juli 1853 über die Entstehung des Werks:

„Ich habe ein Begleitschreiben für die ‚Frühlingsboten‘ verabfaßt welches ich an die Zeitungsredactionen denen Recensirexemplare eingesandt werden müssen, mitzuschicken gedenke. […]

Das Schreiben giebt in Kürze Rechenschaft über meinen derzeitigen Standpunkt als Klavier und Kammercomponisten, und kann auf die Recensenten nur von günstigem Einflusse seyn.

Da es nur Specialitäten aus der Geschichte meiner musicalischen Entwickelung und aus der Geschichte des Klaviersatzes und seines zeitigen Standpunktes enthält, so will ich dich nicht damit behelligen, wenigstens nicht brieflich.“3

Bülow rühmt „die außergewöhnliche künstlerische Bedeutendheit und in der That frühlingsmäßige Frische“ der Stücke. „Joachim Raff tritt uns hier als Meister entgegen und zwar nicht blos in Hinsicht der äußerlichen Factur seiner Arbeiten. Was den Stempel der Vollendung dem Künstler aufdrückt, das ist nicht die bloße technische Fertigkeit, die nur die Basis herleiht für ein Höheres; das ist eben dieses Höhere selbst, die Spitze, die entfaltete Blüthe der Individualität.“ In scheinbarem Widerspruch dazu steht Bülows Aussage: „Der fertige Künstler ist doch wahrlich keineswegs das Product nur seiner künstlerischen Erziehung oder Selbstbildung. – In gewissem Sinne ist Raff allerdings Eklek­tiker, aber im besten: er weiß nämlich, – wovon uns sein neues Werk glänzendes Zeugniß giebt – alle die Einseitigkeiten, Manierirtheiten und anderen Klippen zu vermeiden, an denen die meisten seiner Collegen gescheitert sind und noch täglich scheitern.“ In der Tat verbindet Raff in den Frühlingsboten die widerstreitenden Prinzipien Individualität und Eklektik zu einer stimmigen Synthese. Immer wieder beweist er seine Fähigkeit zur Adaption von Idiomen und Satztechniken in Klavierwerken von Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann und anderen. Jedoch zeigen sich diese Einflüsse in einer durchaus originellen Diktion.

Bülow bewundert die Qualitäten und die Neuheit der Frühlingsboten: „Ein hoher, idealer Kunstgeschmack normirt in diesen Stücken die quantitative und qualitative Ausdehnung eines tiefen und in seiner Tiefe doch klaren musikalischen Gefühls. […]

Eine bewundernswerte Einheit von Idee und Form waltet überall ob, und zwar auch in der höheren Bedeutung, daß Erfindung und Gestal­tung sich stets auf gleichem Niveau halten. Raff giebt viel, sehr viel in diesen großen-kleinen Stücken. […] er schafft nur in Stimmungen, und das fühlt man sogleich heraus, daß die Gedanken pulsirt haben. […] Die große Mannichfaltigkeit in Charakter und Stimmung der einzelnen Stücke läßt uns vermuthen, daß dieselben mehr successiv als simultan entstandene Arbeiten sind. Auch scheint bei der sauberen, minutiösen Ausarbeitung der einzelnen Details und dem eifrigen Streben nicht blos claviermäßig, sondern auch leicht d.h. bequem spielbar zu schreiben, die Gewissenhaftigkeit des Autors sich nicht mit einer einzigen Ausfeilung begnügt zu haben. Des Neuen, Interessanten und ächt Originellen wird unendlich viel geboten, und zwar ebensosehr in dem vorwaltenden melodischen als dem harmonischen und rhythmischen Elemente. Wenn auch Raff die Kunst, die Kunst der Arbeit verschwinden zu machen meisterlich versteht, so bietet er doch allen gebildeten und bildungsfähigen Musikern hinreichenden Stoff zu dem anregendsten und belehrendsten Studium des Technischen in mehr als einer Hinsicht.“ Zum angemessenen Vortrag der Frühlingsboten be­merkt Bülow: „Ueberhaupt ist es als ein großer Vorzug dieser Stücke anzusehen, daß sie einen sehr freien, je nach der Stimmung des Spielers, in dem elastischen Kreise der darin ausgesprochenen Empfindungen wechselfähigen Vortrag gestatten.“

Leider ist dieses Dokument derzeit nicht greifbar. Mancherlei Hinweise auf seinen Inhalt können jedoch aus der umfangreichen enthusiastischen Rezension erschlossen werden, die Raffs Freund Hans von Bülow im Januar 1854 in der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik veröffentlichte.4 Aus ihr sei ausführlich zitiert.

Einige Hinweise auf die einzelnen Stücke sollen den Reichtum von Raffs kompositorischer Palette wie auch Einflüsse anderer Komponisten zeigen.

In „Winterruhe“ (Nr. 1) entfaltet sich in ruhiger Bewegung und verhaltenem Ton ein vierstimmiges polyphones, metrisch schwe-

„Als du mir vor 1 ½ Jahren zum ersten Male eine Art von Hoffnung auf das Glück zeigtest, welches du mir jetzt verliehest, schrieb ich die ‚Frühlingsboten‘. Für mich war jenes Werk, das mir aus dem Herzen kam und aufs schnellste zu Papier gelangte, der Widerhall einer freundlichen Ahnung, die mich ganz besaß, für meine Collegen sollte es ein Vorbote dessen seyn, was ich unter glücklichen Verhältnissen dereinst geben würde, sie erhielten in demselben ein Versprechen, was ich zu lösen habe.“2

Die Briefstelle zeigt, dass der Werktitel Frühlingsboten mehrschichtig ist. Er beinhaltet nicht nur einen Bezug zum Frühling in der Natur, wie ihn besonders die Überschriften der ersten beiden Stücke, „Winterruhe“ und „Frühlingsnahen“, zum Ausdruck bringen. Der Titel deutet außerdem auf den „Liebesfrühling“, das Aufblühen einer erotischen Beziehung. Dies zeigt sich in den Überschriften der Stücke ab Nr. 3, die den Weg von der Annäherung über verschiedene Irritationen bis zur Verbundenheit eines imaginären Paares skizzieren. Und schließlich sah Raff in seinem neuen Klavierwerk die „Vorboten“ seiner künftigen, unter „glücklichen Verhältnissen“ entstehenden Arbeiten.

Zu dem im Oktober 1853 im Verlag Heinrichshofen in Magdeburg erschienenen Erstdruck der Frühlingsboten schrieb Raff eine für Rezensenten bestimmte Erklärung, die er in zehn Exemplaren abziehen ließ. Doris Genast informierte er darüber am 8. September 1853:

bendes Gewebe. „Frühlingsnahen“ (Nr. 2) hat marsch­artigen Duktus. Im gesanglich beginnenden Mittelteil wie auch im abschließenden Eckteil kommt es zu triumphalen Steigerungen.

Das kadenzartige Ende des Mittelteils (T. 75–86) zeigt Lisztsches Gepräge. Dem folgenden „Gelübde“ (Nr. 3) verleiht die dorische Tonart mit ihrem traditionell ernsten, würdevollen, erhabenen und sakralen Ausdrucksradius einen archaischen Charakter. Nach einem schlichten Choralsatz mit altertümlich notierten Doppelganzen, die einzelne Choralzeilen beschließen, kehrt die gesamte Melodie in einer von Achtelfiguren durchwirkten (ab T. 37ff. mit der Umkehrung der Figur), mit Vor- und Nachspiel sowie Zwischenspielen ausgeweiteten Choralbearbeitung wieder. Der Beginn des Figurenwerks (T. 23) steht der Klavierfiguration in Schumanns Eichendorff-Vertonung „Zwielicht“ (op. 39 Nr. 10) nahe. „Unruhe“ (Nr. 4) ist ein nervöses Gespinst in komplementärrhythmischer Satztechnik. Im Schlussabschnitt erscheint das Thema im Bass (T. 50 mit Auftakt), schraubt sich in die Höhe und kulminiert in einer aufschreiartigen Dissonanz (T. 55), der eine pathetische plagale Kadenz folgt. In „Annäherung“ (Nr. 5), einer zarten Miniatur von lieblicher Eleganz und leicht morbidem Charme, begegnet einmal mehr Lisztsche Idiomatik. Auch Chopins Nocturnes schimmern durch. „Wirrniss“ (Nr. 6), eine in Engführungen harmonisch weit ausgreifende turbulente Fuge, zeigt wiederum Raffs polyphones Können. Der spukhafte Schluss lässt Assoziationen an Mendelssohns Sommernachtstraum-Musik aufkommen. Der erzählerische Tonfall in „Vorwurf“ (Nr. 7) wird in changierenden Figurationen ausgeweitet und kulminiert in einem verzweifelten, mit großem Pathos à la Liszt („disperato“) ausgeführten Ausbruch, dem ein beruhigender, sich nach dur wendender Beschluss folgt.

Der schlichte vierstimmige Duktus von „Fern“ (Nr. 8) geht nach dem stockenden Beginn in eine ruhige Wanderbewegung über.

Dazu passt die Verwandtschaft der Melodiephrase T. 5/6 mit der Cellomelodie im 2. Teil der 5. Variation des 4. Satzes in Schuberts Forellenquintett op. 114. „Frohe Kunde“ (Nr. 9) zeigt im Klaviersatz und im Charakter den Einfluss Chopins (z. B. Impromptu Nr. 1 As-dur op. 29). Die metrische Verschiebung um ein Achtel bringt die Melodie zum Schweben und erhöht ihre Expressivität, die Geradtaktigkeit der Unterstimme (der notierte 6/8-Takt ist eigentlich ein 2/4-Takt) bildet ein reizvolles Gegengewicht zum Figurenwerk in der rechten Hand, das öfters zwischen 3x2- und 2x3-Bildungen changiert. „Zu zwei“ (Nr. 10) entfaltet sich als ruhiger, träumerischer Zwiegesang einer weiblichen und einer männlichen Stimme. Die tiefere Stimme verläuft kanonisch eine Quinte tiefer als die hohe. Zwei Ritornelle rahmen den Dialog ein.

In „Ohne Ruh‘“ (Nr. 11) verbinden sich das Changieren von kleiner und großer Sexte im mehrfach wiederkehrenden Thema und ein beweglicher Klaviersatz zu einem reizvollen Spiel. Der Charakter des Schlussstücks „Abends“ (Nr. 12) lässt an Nocturnes von

Chopin oder auch an Liszts Consolations denken. Dem in großer Steigerung erreichten Höhepunkt folgt ab T. 33 ein ruhig ausschwingender, in tiefer Lage schließender Abgesang.

Im Dezember 1859 gingen die Frühlingsboten in das Eigentum des mit Raff freundschaftlich verbundenen Verlegers Julius Schuberth über. Für dessen Verlag besorgte der inzwischen berühmte Komponist 1860 auf Bitten des Verlegers eine neue Ausgabe der Frühlingsboten wie auch anderer seiner Werke. Sie erschien im Novem­ber 1860. Diese zweite Ausgabe bildet die definitive Fassung des Werks und wird daher der vorliegenden Neuedition zugrunde gelegt. Auf dem Titelblatt der zweiten Ausgabe hat Raff den Zusatz „12 kurze Klavierstücke“ in „12 Clavier­s tücke“ abgeändert und die Widmung an Robert Franz weggelassen. Zudem gab er jedem Stück einen charakteristischen Titel bei und bezeichnete alle sorgfältig mit Fingersätzen. Weitere kleinere Änderungen bestehen in Ergänzungen von Bögen sowie in Hinzufügungen und Streichungen einzelner Vortragsbezeichnungen. Raff überwachte die Ausführung der Änderungen penibel. Dem Verleger schrieb er vor dem Neudruck: „Selbstverständlich bitte ich mir die letzte Correctur davon aus, mit welcher die heutige Revision eingesandt werden muß, damit ich im Stande bin zu vergleichen.“ 5 Über Prinzipien der Edition und editorische Einzelentscheidungen informieren die Editorischen Anmerkungen. Preface The 12 piano pieces presented here, Frühlingsboten op. 55, composed in 1852–53 by Joachim Raff,1 were largely forgotten after his death, like so many of his works. Only in the last few decades has interest in Raff’s extensive oeuvre once more revived, leading to the rediscovery of many attractive works.

With the Frühlingsboten Raff aimed at a high standard. He saw in this collection a fresh compositional start and increase in quality that outpaced the piano works he had so far composed and published. He considered the new creative period that the Frühlingsboten opened to have been a result of his beginning love affair with his future wife Doris Genast. On 12 July 1853 he wrote to her about the work’s genesis: “When you first showed me 1½ years ago some kind of hope in the happiness that you are now giving me, I wrote the ‘Frühlingsboten.’

For me, that work, coming from my heart and gotten down on paper as quickly as possible, was the echo of a pleasent premonition possessing me entirely; for my colleagues it was to be a harbinger of what I would one day give under fortunate circumstances; in it they received a promise that I have to fulfill.”2

The passage from the letter shows that the work’s title, Frühlingsboten [Heralds of Spring], is multi-dimensional, referring not only to nature’s spring, as is expressed, in particular, by the headings of the first two pieces, “Winterruhe [Hibernation]” and “Frühlingsnahen [Spring’s Approach].” The title also indicates “Liebesfrühling [Love’s Spring],” the flourishing of an erotic relationship. This can be seen in the headings of the pieces as of No. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the “harbingers” of his future work activities originating under “fortunate circumstances.”

For reviewers of the Frühlingsboten’s first edition, published in October 1853 by the Heinrichshofen publishing house in Magdeburg, Raff wrote an explanation that he had printed in ten exemplars. He informed Doris Genast about this on 8 September 1853: “I have penned a cover letter for the ‘Frühlingsboten,ʼ which I intend to send along to the newspaper editors to whom review exemplars must be submitted. […] The letter briefly gives an account of my current view as a piano and chamber-music composer and can only have a favorable influence on the reviewers. Since it contains only specialties from the history of my musical development and from the history of the piano composition and its contemporary position, I do not want to bother you with it, at least not in a letter.”3

Unfortunately this document is currently not available. Some references to its content can, though, be inferred from the extensive enthusiastic review published in January 1854 by Raff’s friend Hans von Bülow in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik,4 as is to be quoted in detail.

Bülow extols “the extraordinary artistic importance and, in effect, the spring freshness” of the pieces. “We encounter Joachim Raff here as a master, and not just in terms of the external facture of his works. What puts the stamp of perfection on the artist is

not mere technical skill that confers only the basis for something higher; it is just this higher aspect itself, the apex, the unfolding burgeoning of individuality.” In a seeming contradiction to this is Bülow’s assertion: “The finished artist truly is after all by no means the product of his artistic upbringing or self-education. – In a certain sense Raff is eclectic, to be sure, but in the best of ways: he knows, namely – of which his new work gives us brilliant evidence –, how to avoid all the one-sidedness, mannerisms, and other pitfalls on which most of his colleagues have foundered and still do daily founder.” Raff does indeed combine the conflicting precepts of individuality and eclecticism into a coherent synthesis in Frühlingsboten. Time and again he demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from piano works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others, though these influences show up in a thoroughly original diction.

Bülow admires the qualities and novelty of Frühlingsboten: “A high, ideal taste in art standardizes in these pieces the quantitative and qualitative expansion of a profound and, in its depth, clear musical feeling. […] An admirable unity of idea and form prevails everywhere, and, in fact, also in the higher meaning, that invention and design are always maintained on the same level. Raff gives much, very much in these large-small pieces. […] he creates only in moods, and one can immediately sense how vibrant the ideas were. […] The great variety in character and mood of the individual pieces leads us to surmise that they originated more successively than simultaneously. Also, in the clean, scrupulously precise elaboration of the individual details and the zealous striving to write, not just idiomatically for piano, but also something easy, that is, comfortable to play, the author’s conscientiousness does not seem to have been satisfied with solely a fine-tuning. Offered there is infinitely much that is new, interesting, and genuinely original, and just as much in the prevailing melodic as in the harmonic and rhythmic elements. Even though Raff masterfully understands the art of making the artistry of the labor disappear, he still offers all cultivated and cultivable musicians sufficient material for the most stimulating and instructive study of technics in more than one respect.” Bülow commented on the appropriate performance of the Frühlingsboten: “In general, it is to be deemed a great advantage that these pieces afford a very free performance that can be altered, depending on the player’s mood, within the flexible sphere of the emotions expressed in them.”

Several allusions to the individual pieces should demonstrate the richness of Raff’s compositional palette, as well as also the influence of other composers.

Unfolding in “Winterruhe [Hibernation]” (no. 1) is a four-part polyphonic, metrically floating texture in quiet motion and restrained tone. “Frühlingsnahen [Spring’s Approach]” (no. 2) has a characteristic march-like style, with triumphal climaxes in the middle section that opens tunefully, as well as in the final framing section. The cadenza-like end of the middle section (mm. 75–86) shows a Lisztian stamp. The following “Gelübde [Vow]” (no. 3) is lent an archaic character by the Dorian key with its traditionally serious, dignified, sublime and sacred expressive ambit. After a simple chorale setting with quaintly notated double whole notes

concluding individual chorale lines, the entire melody returns in a chorale arrangement interwoven with eighth-note figures (mm. 37ff., with the figure inverted), extended by a prelude, postlude, as well as interludes. The opening figuration (m. 23) is close to the piano figuration in Schumann’s setting of Eichendorff’s “Zwielicht [Twilight]” (op. 39, no. 10). “Unruhe [Unrest]” (no. 4) is a nervous web in a complementary rhythmic composition technique. In the final section the theme appears in the bass (m. 50 with an upbeat), spirals upwards, and culminates in an outcry-like dissonance (m. 55), followed by a pathetic plagal cadence.

Encountered in “Annäherung [Approach]” (no. 5), a delicate miniature of lovely elegance and slightly morbid charm, are once again Liszt’s idioms. Chopin’s nocturnes are shimmering through as well. “Wirrniss [Confusion]” (no. 6) shows in turn Raff’s polyphonic competence in the harmonically wide-ranging stretti of a turbulent fugue. The ghostly close evokes associations with Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream music. The narrative tone in “Vorwurf [Reproach]” (no. 7) is expanded in changing figurations and culminates in a desperate outburst executed with great pathos à la Liszt (“disperato”), followed by a soothing conclusion, turning to major. The simple, characteristic four-part style of “Fern [Distant]” (no. 8) passes into a peaceful migration after the hesitant opening, well suiting the relationship between the melody phrase, mm. 5/6, and the cello melody in the 2nd section of the 4th movement’s 5th variation in Schubert’s Forellenquintett op. 114. “Frohe Kunde [Glad Tidings]” (no. 9) shows Chopin’s influence in the piano writing and in its character (for example, Impromptu no. 1 in A flat major, op. 29). The metric shift by an eighth note makes the melody float, increasing its expressivity, the straight rhythm of the lower voice (the notated 6/8 meter is actually a 2/4 meter) forms an attractive counterbalance to the figuration in the right hand that more often alternates between 3x2 and 2x3 formations. “Zu zwei [As a pair]” (no. 10) unfolds as a calm, dreamy duet for a female and male voice. The lower voice is canonically a fifth lower than the higher voice, with two ritornelli framing the dialogue. Combining in “Ohne Ruh’ [Without Rest]” (no. 11) to create a delightful game is the alternation of minor and major sixths in the repeatedly recurring theme with an agile piano setting. The character of the final piece “Abends [In the evening]” (no. 12) is reminiscent of Chopin’s nocturnes or Liszt’s Consolations. The climax arrived at after great intensification is followed from m. 33 by a quiet swan song that closes in the lower register.

In December 1859 Frühlingsboten became the property of the publisher Julius Schuberth, who was on friendly terms with Raff.

At the publisher’s request in 1860, the publishing house obtained from the now famous composer, together also with other works of his, a new edition of the Frühlingsboten, which appeared in November 1860. This second edition, constituting the work’s definitive version, is therefore used as the basis for the present new edition. On the second edition’s title page Raff changed the description “12 Short Piano Pieces” to “12 Piano Pieces” and omitted the dedication to Robert Franz. He furthermore gave each piece a characteristic title and carefully marked fingerings in all the pieces. Other small changes included adding slurs as well as adding and/or deleting single performance markings.

Raff meticulously supervised the execution of the changes, writing to the publisher before the reprinting: “Of course, I am asking for the final galley proofs with which the present revision must be sent so that I am in the position to compare them.”5 The editorial annotations provide information on the editorial guidelines and individual editorial decisions.
