Foreword

Woraus besteht eine Stimme? Natürlich aus Knorpel, Muskeln, Bändern und Epithel; aber auch aus der Persönlichkeit, den Interessen, Vorlieben und Charakterzügen, die das Einmalige eines jeden Menschen ausmachen.

What is a voice made of? Cartilage, muscle, ligament and epithelium, of course; but also the personality, interests, predilections and character traits which make each and every human being unique.

Jeder Mensch ist ein Individuum. So, wie es nicht nur Schuhgröße 36 und 38, sondern auch 37½ gibt, so gibt es auch bei Stimmen viele Zwischengrößen sowie innerhalb jeder Stimmgattung viele Schattierungen und Facetten. Jede Rolle verlangt einen passenden Körperbau, die notwendige Kraft und Flexibilität (sowohl im Kehlkopf als auch im Atmungsapparat) und die angemessene psychische Affinität und Vorstellungskraft, um zufriedenstellend und letztendlich erfolgreich gesungen und auf der Bühne glaubhaft durchgelebt zu werden.

Each of us is an individual. And so, just as shoes come in sizes 5, 7 and 6½, so too do voices come in all conceivable variations, with many nuances and facets in each voice category. Each rôle demands its corresponding physique, the necessary power and flexibility (in the larynx as well as in the breathing apparatus) and an adequate psychological affinity and imaginative power in order to really be successfully sung and credibly brought to life onstage.

Es ist eine der schwierigsten Entscheidungen für Sänger (und ihre Lehrer!), das im Moment passende Repertoire auszuwählen: Wo stehe ich jetzt? Wo könnte ich demnächst vielleicht hineinwachsen? Wovon sollte ich im Moment lieber die Finger lassen?

Die drei Bände für Mezzosopran und Alt sind dafür eine hervorragende Orientierungshilfe – und ein großes Geschenk!

Die Experten, die diese Auswahl getroffen und geordnet haben, sind erfahrene Sänger und Pädagogen. Sie haben nicht nur Umfang und Tessitura der jeweiligen Arien, sondern auch stilistische, musikalische und praktische Fragen bedacht wie Orchesterbesetzung, Entstehungszeit der Oper, Theatergröße, Aufführungspraxis und nicht zuletzt den Theater- und Agentur­a lltag.

Selbstverständlich ist auch dieser Versuch, Opernarien einzuordnen, nicht endgültig oder gar universell anwendbar. Es wird immer Sängerinnen geben, die „den Rahmen sprengen“ und die körperliche und psychische Flexibilität besitzen, gleich mehrere Fächer gut bedienen zu können. Doch ein Blick über den Tellerrand – ab und zu ein paar Takte Wagner zum Beispiel – kann für jede Sängerin, wenn klug gemacht, sogar gesund sein und zum Nachdenken anregen.

Ich freue mich, in diesen gut sortierten Alben Wohlbekanntes, aber auch neue, bisher mir unbekannte Arien zu finden. Ich bin überzeugt, Ihnen wird es auch so ergehen, und wünsche viel Freude auf der Entdeckungsreise in den Alben – und in sich!

One of the most difficult decisions for singers (and their teachers!) is finding the right repertoire for the present state of vocal development: What could I sing onstage right now? What repertoire might I grow into? What should I avoid at all costs? These three volumes for mezzo-soprano and alto provide a magnificent orientation, and are a great gift!

The experts who have selected these arias are experienced singers and teachers. They have taken into account not just range and tessitura, but also stylistic, musical and practical questions such as orchestration and scoring, epoch, theater size, historical performance practice and the ins and outs of casting by theaters and agents.

Not even this intelligently compiled collection of opera arias can be ultimately conclusive or universally suitable for every singer.

There will always be such rare beasts as can sing and act a plethora of voice categories well and convincingly. However, it can be very beneficial for all singers to take a look over the fence; a few bars of Wagner now and then, for instance, judiciously selected, can be a really healthy way to extend physical and mental horizons.

It is a great pleasure to find in these tomes well-sorted ever­ greens and rareties and also arias as yet unknown to me. I am convinced that you will be as enthusiastic as I am, and therefore I wish you bon voyage on this exploratory journey into new repertoire – and into yourself!

Preface

Wer kennt sie nicht als treue Wegbegleiter: die traditionellen Arienalben – manchmal auch nur mühsam daraus zusammengestellte fliegende Blätter – mit einem oft schlecht spiel- oder lesbaren, nicht immer zuverlässigen Notentext. Sie gehörten einfach dazu, leisteten gute Dienste und ersparten aufwendiges Recherchieren in Bibliotheken, auch wenn viele der ­abgedruckten Arien nicht zur eigenen Stimme passten, sei es, weil das Repertoire zu unterschiedlich zusammengestellt war und lediglich die Einteilung in Stimmlagen berücksichtigte, sei es, weil ambitionierte Heraus­ geber Partien in einem Band ­vereinten, die unter sängerischen Gesichts­punkten nicht von ein und d ­ erselben Person zu bewältigen sind. Auch die inzwischen weitaus bequemeren Möglichkeiten des Internets boten bislang keine überzeugende Alternative.

Anliegen der vorliegenden Repertoiresammlung mit Opern­ arien ist es, dem Benutzer einen modernen Wegbegleiter oder – um im Bild zu bleiben – einen systematisch aufgebauten, gut informierten Vokalcoach an die Hand zu geben, der sich auf der Höhe der Zeit bewegt und den Anforderungen der ­heutigen Theater­praxis entspricht. Hauptsächlich zum G ­ ebrauch für Hochschulstudien und Theatervorsingen entwickelt, richtet sich die Repertoiresammlung jedoch nicht nur an Studierende, sondern auch an bereits beruflich tätige Sängerinnen und Sänger, die ihr Fachrepertoire erweitern möchten oder sich auf einen Fachwechsel vorbereiten. Darüber hinaus dürfte eine schlüssige Bündelung des Vorsing­repertoires, wie sie hier vorgestellt wird, auch für gesangspädagogisch Tätige und alle diejenigen interessant sein, die sich unter dem Aspekt spezifischer Stimmprofile über ­Besetzungsfragen informieren möchten oder die bei Rollenbesetzungen an Theatern mitzuentscheiden haben.

Der vorliegende Band enthält einen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch das dramatische Mezzosopran-Repertoire und ist Bestandteil einer umfassenden Repertoiresammlung von Opern­ arien für alle Stimmgattungen. Die grundlegende Einteilung in die Kategorien lyrisch, lyrisch–dramatisch und dramatisch ist als Orientierungshilfe sinnvoll; sie gibt eine Richtung vor, lässt aber genügend Spielraum für die Individualität der verschiedenen Stimm- und Rollentypen und wird deshalb unter Lehrenden wie Theater­praktikern zunehmend als nützliche Ergänzung zur traditionellen Stimmfach­einteilung verwendet, ohne mit dieser konkurrieren zu wollen. Überschneidungen zwischen den Kategorien und dem jeweils in den Einzelbänden enthaltenen Repertoire lassen sich bei einer so offenen Einteilung wie der hier vorgenommenen natürlich nicht ganz ausschließen.

Die Auswahl der Arien aus drei Jahrhunderten des klassischen Opernrepertoires erfolgte nach stimmlichen Kriterien ­(Umfang, Tessitura, Spezifika, Arientyp) unter Berücksichtigung musikalischer und theaterpraktischer Aspekte (Stilistik, Epoche, Rollentyp, nationale Herkunft). Arien aus Barock­opern, die heute zwar ebenfalls zum gängigen Repertoire g­ ehören, aber teils andere Fähig­keiten und weitere Kenntnisse erfordern, wurden in der Regel dabei nicht berück­sichtigt.

Meist, aber nicht immer, deckt sich der Grundcharakter der ausgesuchten Arien mit demjenigen der gesamten Partie. In Fällen, wo die stimmlichen Anforderungen von Einzelarie und Gesamtpartie auseinanderklaffen, wird darauf eigens hingewiesen, um

Everyone knows them as faithful companions on one’s path to vocal mastery: the traditional aria albums. Sometimes these albums were simply hastily compiled loose sheets, and their musical texts hard to read or play, and were not always authoritative. They were part of the singer’s training. They were serviceable and saved the singer a great deal of research in ­libraries, even if many of the arias printed in such anthologies did not suit the singer’s voice. The repertoire often pres­ented a potpourri of vastly contrasting pieces and only took into account the distinction in vocal ranges. Other times, a­ mbitious editors compiled into one volume parts which, from a singer’s point of view, were so distant from one another that they could not be mastered by one and the same person. Even the multifarious resources of the internet have yet to offer any compelling alternative.

The goal of the present repertoire collection of opera arias is to give the user a modern-day, systematically structured c­ ompanion or – to stay in character –, a knowledgeable, well-informed and up-to-date vocal coach who satisfies the demands of present-day theater practice. Although developed mainly for use in college- or university-level studies and theatrical auditions, the collection does not solely target students, but also singers who are already professionally active and wish to expand their specialized repertoire or prepare for a change of voice range. Moreover, a well-ordered conflation of the audition repertoire, as presented here, might also be interesting to anyone involved in vocal pedagogy and to all who wish to be knowledgeable about specific vocal profiles for casting-related matters, including those responsible for the casting of theatrical roles.

The present volume contains a representative cross-section of the dramatic repertoire for mezzo-soprano and forms part of a comprehensive repertoire anthology of opera arias for all vocal genres. The basic subdivision into the lyric, lyric–dramatic, and dramatic categories is conceived as a means of orientation; it suggests a direction, but leaves enough room to showcase the individuality of the various types of voices and roles. This is why it is increasingly seen as a valuable supplement to the traditional “Fach” s­ pecification used by teachers and theatrical casting professionals, without seeking to compete against this traditional vocal division. Obviously, an overlapping of the categories and repertoire contained in the individual volumes cannot always be precluded on account of the very supple d ­ ivision that we have made here.

The selection of arias from three centuries of classical opera repertoire was made according to vocal criteria (range, ­tessitura, specifics, type of aria), while taking into account practical aspects of a musical and theatrical nature (style, era, role type, national provenance). Arias from Baroque operas which are commonly found in today’s repertoire but sometimes call for very different qualities and additional know­ledge, were as a rule not included in this selection.

Generally, but not always, the basic character of the aria in question reflects that of the entire part. In cases where the vocal demands of the individual aria diverge considerably from those of the overall role, this will be pointed out specifically in order to banish the danger of overtaxing the voice. We have chosen wellknown audition arias as well as rarities that are otherwise inacces-

Ausgewählt wurden sowohl gängige Vorsing­a rien als auch schwer oder nur in unzulänglichen Ausgaben zugängliche Raritäten sowie Arien der klassischen Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts, die zumeist aus urheberrechtlichen Gründen in traditionellen Arienalben fehlen, inzwischen aber Eingang in die Spielpläne gefunden haben. Damit enthält diese Repertoiresammlung neben den unverzichtbaren klassischen Vorsingarien für Theatervorsingen eine breit gefächerte Auswahl an Arien für ­Vortragsabende, Konzerte, Opern-­Recitals, mit der Studierende wie Ausübende ihre stimmlichen und gestalterischen Fähigkeiten zeigen können.

Der Notentext der Arien basiert auf Ausgaben, die in der Bühnenpraxis als Standard gelten und die größte textliche Zuverlässigkeit bieten. Die Klaviersätze wurden entweder neu erarbeitet oder auf der Grundlage bewährter Klavierauszüge mit dem Ziel revidiert, eine partiturnahe klangliche Realisierung bei m ­ öglichst einfacher Spielbarkeit zu ermöglichen. Gelegentlich mussten Arien gekürzt (z. B. ­orchestrale Vor- oder Zwischenspiele) oder praktikable Schlüsse ergänzt werden (z. B. in weiterführenden, offenen Arien und Szenen).

Die Einzelkommentare zu den Arien enthalten Informationen zu Komponist, Librettist, Werk, Tonumfang und zu eventuellen Besonderheiten wie Fassungs- oder Besetzungsfragen einschließlich einer kurzen Inhaltsangabe, die die dramatische Grundkon­ stellation andeutet, in der die jeweilige Arie im Handlungskontext der Oper steht. Hinzu kommen methodische Hinweise aus sängerischer Sicht als Empfehlung aus der Praxis von Bühne und Hochschule, in die wertvolle Ratschläge vieler Sängerkolleginnen und -kollegen eingeflossen sind. Schließlich sei auf zwei Studierhilfen für die Arientexte verwiesen: einen „Phonetik-Assistenten“ mit Audio­dateien (mp3) in der Originalsprache, von Muttersprachlern gesprochen, und einen „Text-Assistenten“ mit Textdateien (pdf) in deutscher und englischer Übersetzung. sible, or accessible only in unsatisfactory editions, along with arias from the 20th-century’s “classical modernity” that are missing in traditional aria albums, usually for copyright reasons, but which have since found their way into the operatic repertoire. Thus next to the indispensable classical arias for stage auditions, this anthology contains a vast s­ election of arias for recitals, concerts and opera soirées with which students and professionals can let their vocal and interpretative talents shine.

The musical text of the arias is based on editions that are considered as standard in stage practice and offer the most authoritative texts. The piano parts were either newly written or revised on the basis of proven piano-vocal scores with the aim to achieve a transposition of the original sound that is as faithful to the score as possible, while remaining easy to play. Occasionally arias had to be abridged (e.g. orchestral preludes or interludes) or supplemented with practicable endings (e.g. in open arias and scenes that lead immediately into another musical section without a break).

The individual comments on the arias provide information on the composer, the librettist, the work, the range and, if deemed necessary, on peculiarities such as matters of versions or casting.

Also included is a short synopsis of the contents which illuminates the basic dramatic constellation in which the r­ espective aria is embedded in the context of the opera’s plot. Furthermore, there are methodical comments from the singer’s point of view as recommendation from someone who has both stage and academic teaching experience, incorporating valuable advice from many singer colleagues. Finally, we draw attention to two study aids for the aria texts: a “phonetics assistant” with audio files (mp3) in the original language, spoken by native speakers, as well as a “text assistant” with text files (pdf) of the German and English translations. Both are available for download at www.breitkopf.com.

Des Königs Favoritin, dieses Thema lag bereits Donizettis Oper L’ange de Nisida zugrunde. Da die Premiere 1840 nicht zustande kam, arbeitete Donizetti die Musik auf das neue Szenario der Favorita um. Leonoras berühmte Arie zählt zu den neukomponierten Stücken.

Nachdem sich der Novize Fernando in Leonora verliebt hat, lässt er das Klosterleben hinter sich, um sich der mysteriösen Edeldame durch den Militärdienst als würdig zu erweisen. Fernandos Kampfesmut will König Alfons scheinbar mit der ersehnten Hochzeit belohnen, nutzt jedoch Fernando für eine eigennützige Intrige. Denn Leonora ist des Königs Lieblingsmätresse, für die er sogar den Zorn der Kirche zu tragen bereit war – doch er hat einen Rivalen. Leonora ist verzweifelt; sie weiß, dass die noch für denselben Tag angeordnete Heirat den nichtsahnenden Fer­ nando in den Augen der Gesellschaft ruinieren wird.

Wunderbar vielseitige und farbenreiche Arie, bestens für Vorsingen, Wettbewerb und als Studienarie geeignet. Die rezitativische Einleitung agitato vortragen, um das verzweifelte Ringen der Protagonistin glaubhaft darzustellen. Ab T. 46 ist eine pastose untere Mittellage bzw. gute Bruststimmmischung notwendig. Ab T. 71 sind umfangreichere Veränderungen üblich. Eine gebräuchliche Kürzung umfasst T. 90–139. Ab T. 140 rhythmisch exakt singen; in den tieferen Lagen gern das Brustregister einsetzen; T. 163f. Zeit nehmen für die Kadenz. Im Più mosso immer wieder Entspannung suchen, dafür ab T. 174 auch die Pausen nutzen; die Schlusskadenz darf gerne auf a2 oder h2 gehen.

The king’s favorite was also the topic on which Donizetti’s opera L’ange de Nisida had been based. When the premiere did not come off in 1840, Donizetti adapted the music to the Favorita scenario. Leonora‘s famous aria is one of the newly composed pieces.

Having fallen in love with Leonora, the novice Fernando leaves the monastic life behind him in order to prove himself worthy to the mysterious noble lady by military service. King Alfons apparently wants to reward Fernando’s fighting courage with the longed-for marriage, but he uses Fernando for his own selfish intrigue. Leonora is in fact the king’s favorite mistress, for whom he was even prepared to bear the anger of the church – but he has a rival. Leonora is distraught; she knows that the marriage ordered to take place that day will ruin the unsuspecting Fernando’s reputation in society.

A wonderfully versatile and colorful aria, eminently suitable for auditions, competitions and as a study aria. Sing the recitative-like introduction agitato, to portray the protagonist’s desperate conflict convincingly. From m. 46 onwards a rich, impasto-like lower middle or a good chest voice mix is required. More elaborate variations are customary from m. 71. Mm. 90– 139 are often cut. Rhythmic precision is necessary from mm. 140; the chest register may be employed in the lower range; in mm. 163f. allow time for the cadenza. In the Più mosso, keep looking for places to relax a little, making use of the rests from m. 174 onwards for this purpose; the final cadenza can rise up to a2 or b2.

Um die Herrschaft über das Herzogtum Brabant zu erlangen, stachelt Ortrud, letzte Nachfahrin eines ruhmreichen heidnischen Stammes, ihren Gatten Friedrich von Telramund zur Intrige gegen Elsa von Brabant an. Doch diese wird von dem mysteriösen Ritter Lohengrin beschützt, der in Begleitung eines Schwans aufgetaucht ist. Nicht einmal Ortruds Mann weiß, dass es sich dabei um Elsas totgeglaubten Bruder handelt, den die zauberkundige Ortrud in ein Tier verwandelt hat. Ortrud erschleicht sich Elsas Vertrauen – wohl wissend, dass Lohengrin besiegt werden kann, wenn sie Elsa dazu bringen kann, ihm die verbotene Frage nach seiner Herkunft zu stellen. Die alten Götter ruft Ortrud um Beistand für ihren Plan an.

Sehr kurze, hochdramatische Arie aus dem sogenannten Zwischenfach, die vor allem Kraft, Stimmgröße und Höhe zeigt. Diese Arie sollte wie die gesamte Partie im sängerischen Reifeprozess nicht zu früh ins Repertoire genommen werden. Für das gis1 in T. 17, 21, 23 und 27 möglichst nicht die Bruststimme verwenden, stattdessen das Orchester durch starke Konsonanten übertönen. Die Fermate am Schluss auf ais2 gerne halten.

In order to gain control over the Duchy of Brabant, Ortrud, the last descendent of an illustrious heathen tribe, incites her husband Friedrich von Telramund to scheme against Elsa von Brabant. However, the latter is protected by a mysterious knight named Lohengrin, who has appeared in the company of a swan. Not even Ortrud’s husband knows that this is Elsa’s brother who was presumed dead, but had in fact been turned into an animal by Ortrud’s magical powers. Ortrud gains Elsa‘s confidence – since she knows that Lohengrin can be beaten if she can bring Elsa to ask him the forbidden question about his background. Ortrud calls on the old gods to support her plan.

A very short, highly dramatic aria belonging to the so-called Zwischenfach, showing above all vocal power, a large voice and high notes. This aria, and the whole role, should not be added to the singer’s repertoire too soon during her vocal development. If possible, avoid using chest voice on the g K1 in mm. 17, 21, 23 and 27, instead cutting through the orchestra by means of strong consonants. The fermata at the end on aK2 may be sustained.

Im Sommer 1857 unterbrach Wagner die Arbeit am Ring, um sich seiner Tristan-Vertonung zuzuwenden. Sie spiegelt ein Stück weit seine Lebenssituation; im schweizerischen Exil hatte er sich auf eine Romanze mit Mathilde, der Ehefrau seines großzügigen Unterstützers Otto Wesendonck, eingelassen.

Der ruhmreiche Ritter Tristan hat im Auftrag seines väterlichen Freundes König Marke die irische Prinzessin Isolde gegen ihren Willen als Markes Braut nach Kornwall überführt. Doch da Brangäne das Gift, mit dem die verzweifelte Isolde sich und Tristan töten wollte, mit einem Liebestrank vertauscht hat, ist aus Feindseligkeit heftige Leidenschaft geworden. So hat Brangäne zwar das Leben ihrer Herrin und Freundin gerettet, muss nun aber über die heimliche, gefährliche Liebesbeziehung wachen, der sich Tristan und Isolde nicht entziehen können.

Sehr kurze, doch aussagekräftige Arie, die trotz geringstem Stimmumfang besonders herausfordernd für die Expansionsfähigkeit der Stimme ist. Diese muss bei bester Atemkontrolle in den endlos scheinenden Phrasen immer weich bleiben und eine perfekte Einteilung der stimmlichen Dynamik zeigen, zumal bei Vorsingen nicht aus dem Off gesungen wird.

Geschicktes Atmen hilft, den Phrasenfluss nicht zu unterbrechen. Die Orchesterbegleitung erleichtert die sängerische Bewältigung.

In the summer of 1857 Wagner interrupted his work on Der Ring des Nibelungen to attend to his Tristan score. To a certain extent this work mirrors the composer’s own situation, as during his exile in Switzerland he began an affair with Mathilde, the wife of his generous sponsor Otto Wesendonck.

On behalf of his paternal friend, the renowned knight Tristan has brought the Irish princess Isolde against her will to Cornwall to become the bride of King Marke. However, since Brangäne has swapped a love potion for the poison with which Isolde in desperation wanted to kill herself and Tristan, hostility has turned into intense passion. Having saved the life of her mistress and friend, Brangäne must now keep watch over the secret, dangerous love affair from which Tristan and Isolde cannot escape.

A very short but significant aria, which particularly challenges the voice’s potential for dynamic expansion, in spite of its minimal vocal range. The voice must always remain lyrical with optimal breath control during the apparently endless phrases, displaying perfect distribution of the vocal dynamics, especially as one does not sing offstage in auditions. Well-coordinated breathing helps to avoid disturbing the flow of the phrases. The orchestral accompaniment supports the mastering of the vocal challenges.

Göttervater Wotan zeugte unter dem Namen Wälse einst mit einer Sterblichen das Zwillingspaar Siegmund und Sieglinde. Als Kinder getrennt, entbrennt zwischen den beiden beim Wiedersehen eine leidenschaftliche Liebe. Sieglindes herrischer Ehemann Hunding fordert Siegmund zum Duell – doch Wotan ist fest entschlossen, seinen Sohn zu schützen und schickt ihm zur Unterstützung seine Lieblingstochter, die Walküre Brünnhilde. Wotans Frau Fricka jedoch, die Schutzgöttin der Ehe, kann nicht akzeptieren, dass Wotan Inzest und Ehebruch gutheißt. Sie wirft Wotan vor, damit die Gesetze der Götter zu missachten – und auch Fricka selbst, die er immer wieder betrogen hat.

Repräsentative Studien- und Vorsingszene für den Wagner-Mezzo, für die Textverständlichkeit wie dramatische Durchschlagskraft besonders wichtig sind. Eine gute Obertonstruktur der Stimme, gut gestützte Anfangs-und Endkonsonanten sowie der Einsatz der Bruststimme helfen, den teilweise kräftigen Orchesterklang zu durchdringen. Alliterationen sollten hervorgehoben und die dynamischen Bögen klug eingeteilt werden. Auch sollte die Sängerin die emotionale Spannbreite zwischen Flehen, Vorwurf und Verbitterung farblich und in der Sprachbehandlung angemessen differenzieren. Wird bei Vorsingen eine kürzere Version gewünscht, kann mit T. 54 begonnen werden.

Die Walküre was for a long time the most frequently performed single work of the Ring cycle, and in most early productions it was usually performed with cuts. The first complete performance of the score was in 1905 in Vienna, conducted by Gustav Mahler.

Wotan, the father of the gods, once sired the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde with a mortal woman, using the name Wälse. Separated as children, when they meet again they are consumed with passionate love for each other. Sieglinde‘s domineering husband Hunding challenges Siegmund to a duel – but Wotan is determined to protect his son and sends to him his favorite daughter, Brünnhilde the Valkyrie. However, Wotan’s wife Fricka, the patron goddess of marriage, cannot accept that Wotan approves of incest and adultery. She accuses Wotan of disregarding the laws of the gods – and also Fricka herself, whom he has betrayed many times.

An expressive study and audition aria for the Wagner mezzo, in which clear diction and dramatic projection are particularly important. In order to help the voice penetrate the at times powerful orchestral sound, ensure a good balance of vocal harmonics, support beginning and end consonants well, and make use of the chest voice. Emphasize the alliterations, and calculate wisely the dynamic shaping of the phrases. The singer should also sufficiently distinguish the range of emotions, from pleading to accusation and bitterness, by means of vocal color and use of the text. If a shorter version is desired for auditions, begin at m. 54.

Während man dort an Ambossen schmiedet, überkommt Manricos Mutter Azucena beim Anblick der Flammen die Erinnerung an den Scheiterhaufen, auf dem ihre Mutter verbrannt wurde.

Kurze und aussagekräftige Studien-, Vorsing- und Konzertarie, die sowohl Belcanto-Flexibilität wie Dramatik eindrucksvoll darstellt. Das angegebene Tempo bezieht sich auf punktierte Viertel und sollte zumindest grundsätzlich angestrebt werden. Akzente und Punktierungen penibel realisieren, die kurzen Triller schnell einschwingen; die langen Triller T. 49ff. und 111ff. stetig anschwellend durchhalten. So sollte es auch gelingen, die vergangenen grausigen Ereignisse glaubhaft zu visualisieren.

In Count Luna’s palace, the tragic story is often told of how his younger brother died many years ago. Now an adult, the Count is concerned about an unknown singer, who is competing with him for the love of the Count’s beloved Leonora. After a duel, the troubadour Manrico returns to his community, a group of gypsies. While they forge at their anvils, the flames remind Manrico’s mother, Azucena, of the stake at which her mother was burned.

A short and representative study, audition and concert aria, which impressively displays bel canto flexibility as well as the dramatic character of the voice. The given tempo refers to dotted quarter notes, and the singer should at least aim for this. Execute the accents and dotted notes meticulously, and insert the short trills quickly; sustain the long trills in mm. 49ff. and 111ff. with a steady crescendo. This should help make the visualization of the horror of the past events plausible.

Auf Drängen Manricos erzählt Azucena diesem, wie ihre Mutter damals als Wahrsagerin vom alten Graf Luna einbestellt, dann als Hexe diffamiert, schließlich auf den Scheiterhaufen gezerrt wurde und ihr nur noch zurufen konnte: „Räche mich!“ Wie sie, Azucena, dann – ihr kleines Kind in den Armen – den jungen Sohn des Grafen an sich riss, um den Mord an der Mutter sofort zu sühnen. Ergriffen von der traumatischen Erinnerung kommt ihr dabei ihr schreckliches Geheimnis über die Lippen: In blindem Wahn stieß sie statt den Sohn des Grafen ihr eigenes Kind in die Flammen.

Großartige in jeder Hinsicht dramatische Vorsing-, Wettbewerbs- und Studienarie für den Verdi-Mezzo, die neben dem großen Umfang eine hervorragende Textbehandlung, einen Instinkt für den dramatischen Aufbau der Szene sowie darstellerisch visionäre Überzeugungskraft erfordert. Stimmlich muss für die emotionalen Ausbrüche eine dramatisch strahlende Höhe ebenso zur Verfügung stehen, wie am Arienbeginn und -ende eine tragfähige dunkle Stimmfarbe. Den ersten Teil rhythmisch streng nehmen; T. 44–80 agitato deklamierend beginnen bis zum erschütternden Aufschrei „mi vendica!“ Nach einer weiteren, atemlos erscheinenden Phase (T. 83–92) in ein gutes Legato übergehen; ab T. 131 dunkle Stimmfarbe. Vor dem letzten „ancor!“ kann traditionell geatmet werden: „drizzarsi“ dafür auf zwei Viertel verteilen.

On Manrico’s insistence Azucena tells him how her mother was summoned as a fortune teller by the old Count Luna, then vilified as a witch, and finally dragged to the stake, only able to call out to her, “Avenge me!”

Then how she, Azucena – her small child in her arms – seized the Count’s young son, as immediate atonement for her mother’s murder. Deeply moved by these traumatic memories, she reveals her dreadful secret: in her blind madness she pushed her own child into the flames instead of the Count’s son.

A truly magnificent dramatic aria for the Verdi mezzo, for auditions, competitions and study, which, in addition to a wide vocal range, requires excellent treatment of the text, an instinct for the dramatic build-up of the scene, and acting that is visionary and convincing. The voice must have access to dramatic and radiant high notes for the emotional outbursts, as well as a dark timbre with carrying power at the beginning and end of the aria. Sing the first section with rhythmic precision; mm. 44–80 should begin agitato in a declamatory fashion up to the harrowing cry, “mi vendica!”

After another apparently breathless phase (mm. 83–92), transition into a smooth legato; use a dark timbre from m. 131 onwards. It is traditional to take a breath before the last “ancor!”, spreading “drizzarsi” over two quarter notes.

Verdi musste die fünfaktige französische Originalfassung inklusive Balletteinlage kurz vor der Premiere 1867 radikal kürzen. Die vieraktige italienische Fassung von 1884 (ohne Ballettmusik) ist das Ergebnis einer grundlegenden Revision, die er später weiter revidierte. Heute wird meist die fünfaktige Fassung in Italienisch oder eine Mischfassung gespielt.

Eigentlich war die Hochzeit zwischen dem spanischen Thronfolger Carlos und Elisabeth von Valois beschlossen; die jungen Adligen hatten beim ersten Kennenlernen sogar Gefühle für einander entwickelt. Doch überraschenderweise entschied sich König Philipp, die französische Prinzessin selbst zur Frau zu nehmen. Am spanischen Hof schließt Elisabeth Bekanntschaft mit der einflussreichen Prinzessin Eboli, die mit virtuosen Liedern zu unterhalten weiß. Erst später begreifen die Frauen, dass sie beide heimlich in Carlos verliebt sind.

Sehr gute Studien-und Konzertarie; wenn es um Rollenbesetzung geht, ist jedoch die zweite Arie aussagekräftiger. Die Tessitura ist eher hoch, die Stimme muss leicht, flexibel und virtuos, ganz in Belcantomanier geführt werden, wobei das maurische Kolorit sich auch in einer gewissen Freiheit der „Kadenzen“ (T. 34f., 77f.) quasi improvisiert zeigen darf.

Im mormorio (T. 35 und 78) darf gerne eine dunklere Farbe zum Tragen kommen. Ein besonderer Reiz liegt darin, das Messa di voce auf den auskomponierten Trillern (T. 16, 20, 24, 28 etc.) deutlich zu zeigen.

Before the premiere in 1867 Verdi had to radically shorten the original French version, which was in five acts and included a ballet interlude. The Italian version from 1884 in four acts (without ballet music) is the result of a fundamental revision, which he later revised further. Nowadays it is usual to perform either the five-act version in Italian or a composite version.

The marriage between Carlos, the heir to the Spanish throne, and Elisabeth of Valois had actually been agreed upon; the young aristocrats had even developed feelings for one another on their first meeting. However, King Philipp unexpectedly decided to marry the French princess himself.

At the Spanish court, Elisabeth makes the acquaintance of the influential Princess Eboli, who knows how to entertain with virtuosic songs. Only later do the women realize that they are both secretly in love with Carlos.

A very good study and concert aria; but when it comes to casting, the second aria is more telling. The tessitura is rather high, and the voice should be light, flexible and virtuosic, entirely in the bel canto style, whereby the Moorish coloring may manifest itself in a certain freedom in the “cadences” (mm. 34f., 77f.), as if improvised. A darker timbre can come into effect in the mormorio (mm. 35 and 78). There is a particular charm in applying messa di voce clearly in the written-out trills (mm. 16, 20, 24, 28 etc.).

Prinzessin Eboli hat entdeckt, dass – während sie selbst zurückgewiesen wurde – Carlos Elisabeth liebt, die ihre eigenen Gefühle aber ihrer Pflicht als Königin unterordnet. Nachdem Carlos für seine politische Opposition gegen den Vater inhaftiert wurde, spielt die gekränkte Eboli König Philipp – mit dem sie selbst ein Verhältnis hatte – Beweise für die heimliche Leidenschaft zu. Doch die Konsequenzen ihrer Tat erschüttern Eboli; reumütig nimmt die Prinzessin Abschied vom Hof. Sie verflucht ihr eitles und selbstsüchtiges Verhalten und will wenigstens noch versuchen, Carlos zu retten.

Diese großartige und aussagekräftige Arie ist bestens für Vorsingen, Konzert und Studium geeignet. Sie erfordert eine pastose untere Mittellage, gute Bruststimmmischung sowie die Möglichkeit zum schnellen Hinaufschwingen in strahlende Höhen und bietet eine große Bandbreite an Emotionen. Je nach Registerstruktur kann die Bruststimme bis f 1 (T. 5f.) geführt werden, zumindest eine resonatorische Verstärkung ist notwendig. Ab T. 30 ist wegen des erhöhten Luftverbrauchs eine besonders kontrollierte Atemführung nötig (T. 31–34, 39–42), eventuell nach T. 40 und 52 kurz atmen. Eine angenehmere Textverteilung empfiehlt sich in T. 61: nach „ormai“ atmen, auf as 2 mit „dovrò“ weiterführen und in T. 86 „ciel“ mit es 2 abschließen, dann weiter mit durchvibrierender Stimme auf dem Vokal „a“.

Prinzessin Eboli, rejected by Carlos, has discovered that he loves Elisabeth, who subordinates her feelings to her duty as queen. After Carlos is arrested for politically opposing his father, the slighted Eboli provides proof of their secret passion to King Philipp – with whom she herself had an affair.

However, Eboli is shocked by the consequences of her actions; full of remorse, she takes her leave of the court. She curses her vain and selfish behavior, and determines at least to attempt to save Carlos.

This splendid and representative aria is ideal for auditions, concerts and study. It requires an impasto-like lower middle, a good chest voice mix, as well as the ability to soar quickly up to radiant high notes, and it presents a wide range of emotions. Depending on the structure of the voice, the chest voice can be taken up to f 1 (mm. 5f.), but at the least more intense resonance is required. From m. 30 onwards, due to the increased breath consumption, the breath management must be carefully monitored (mm. 31–34, 39–42), perhaps taking a quick breath after mm. 40 and 52.

It is advisable to adjust the distribution of the text in m. 61: breathe after “ormai”, continue on aJ2 with “dovrò”, and in m. 86 finish “ciel” on eJ2, then continue vibrantly on the vowel “a”.
