Einleitung Die vorliegenden Bände sind das Ergebnis meiner dreizehnjährigen Erfahrung mit der Bearbeitung hebräischer Lieder für Chor. Damit möchte ich ein ausgewähltes Repertoire dieses beliebten Liedguts für Chöre aller Länder erschließen. Die enthaltenen Werke sind Ausdruck der Vielseitigkeit hebräischer Musik, die dank ihrer komplexen Entstehungsgeschichte einen sehr breiten stilistischen Umfang bietet, obwohl sie nur eine geringe Anzahl von Muttersprachlern hat. Diese Entstehungsgeschichte ist zu reichhaltig, als dass ich auf jeden Aspekt davon im Rahmen dieses Bandes eingehen könnte, dennoch hoffe ich, dass die Kommentare zu den einzelnen Werken einen ersten Einblick geben können.

Der erste Band besteht aus zehn geistlichen und paraliturgischen Liedern, die zu den unterschiedlichsten Anlässen gesungen werden können. In diesem Band stellen die Pijutim – mittelalterliche geistliche Gedichte in hebräischer oder aramäischer Sprache, zu denen fünf aus den vorhandenen Sätzen gehören – die Hauptgattung dar. Die wichtigste Gelegenheit für die Aufführung von Pijutim, ob öffentlich in der Synagoge oder privat am Esstisch, ist der Sabbat. Das Stück Behallèl Uveshirìm ist für Pessach gedacht und der einzige moderne Text in diesem Band. Zwei andere Stücke, Adòn Hasselichòt und Avinu Malkenu, sind für die „Zehn Tage der Umkehr“ im Monat Tischré verfasst worden. Zwei der im ersten Band enthaltenen Sätze benötigen eine Solostimme (Osé Shalòm, Yedìd Nefesh), es ist aber bei allen Werken möglich, je nach Wunsch der musikalischen Leitung und entsprechend der vorhandenen Kräfte unterschiedliche Stellen mit Solisten zu besetzen. Der zweite Band besteht aus zehn weltlichen Liedern, die in Israel im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts größere Bekanntheit erlangt haben. Alle diese Lieder sind Bestandteil der Kulturgeschichte Israels und gehören zu seinem Kernrepertoire. Für Chordirigenten und Sänger, die mehr über die Lieder in diesem Buch erfahren möchten, sind im Anhang ausführliche Informationen sowie Übersetzungen ins Deutsche und Englische zu finden. Wenn nicht anders angegeben, sind die Übersetzungen vom Autor. Alle biblischen Zitate stammen aus den modernen Ausgaben der Lutherbibel (Deutsch) und der King James Version (Englisch).

Mein ästhetischer Ansatz ist, höchste Schlichtheit und Unmittelbarkeit in der Darstellung des musikalischen Materials zu erreichen. Die Wahrnehmung meiner Rolle als Arrangeur ist es, das Publikum mit der reinsten Form dieser Musik zu beliefern, wie sie uns durch die Komponisten oder durch die Überlieferung – je nach der Quelle des

entsprechenden Liedes – bekannt ist. Meine Herangehensweise kann mit den Worten des großen jüdischen Ethnomusikologen Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882–1938) zusammengefasst werden (Hervorhebung vom Autor): „Die künstlerisch erfolgreiche Bearbeitung des Volksliedes hängt nicht nur von der getreuen Einhaltung der Melodie ab – und sei diese Sorgfalt um die Echtheit der Melodie noch so entscheidend.

Denn der Musiker muss den Geist der Melodie aufgenommen haben und sich von den Emotionen bewegen lassen, die sie hervorgebracht haben, damit er die Melodie nicht durch eine ungeeignete Harmonisierung karikiert, sondern durch instrumentale [oder vokale, Anm. des Autors] Begleitung zum vollständigen Ausdruck bringt. Er muss die Schlichtheit der Volksweise bewahren, das Instrument der Melodie unterordnen und nur solche Modulationen, Akkordfolgen und harmonischen Kombinationen verwenden, die dem Charakter des Liedes entspringen. Der Wert aller künstlerischen Arbeit im Bereich der Volksmusik liegt in der Achtung und Bewahrung des Eigencharakters des Liedes durch den Komponisten.“ (s. Hinweise zur Aussprache In einem Chor, in dem ich mitgesungen habe, als das Werk eines israelischen Komponisten vorbereitetet wurde, bemerkte ein Mitsänger einmal: „Auf Hebräisch singen? Kein Problem! Du singst’s einfach so, wie es da steht!” Dieser Sänger hat die Tatsache unterschätzt, dass gerade die Übertragung in die lateinische Schrift seine eigene Unwissenheit ermöglicht. In aller Unschuld sang er die Wörter schmerzhaft falsch. Aber wie könnte er es besser wissen? Die Sprache war ihm so fremd wie nur möglich, und ihre richtige Aussprache wird in der Musikliteratur so gut wie kaum diskutiert. Denn es ist keine leichte Aufgabe, hebräische Texte in lateinische Schrift zu übertragen. Es gibt keine einheitliche, allgemein anerkannte Methode der Transliteration, da die Phonologien und Orthographien der semitischen Sprachen sich stark von denen der europäischen Sprachen unterscheiden. Als wäre das nicht genug, gibt es im Hebräischen selbst auch noch verschiedene Dialekte: Die geeignete Aussprache ändert sich je nach Hintergrund des betreffenden Werks.

Daher ist eine Kompromisslösung gefragt, die von Interpreten verschiedener Sprachen mühelos gelesen werden kann und akzeptable Ergebnisse liefert. Aus diesem Grunde habe ich die Aussprache aller Texte nach der modernen israelischen An-

4 wendung standardisiert. Der Verlust an stilistischer Vielfalt wird in diesem Fall durch die Erhöhung der praktischen Anwendbarkeit ausgeglichen, die für nicht-hebräischsprachige Chöre erforderlich ist.

Zu empfehlen wäre dennoch, sich von Experten beraten zu lassen, denn das schriftliche Medium hat ja seine Grenzen. Die Grundregeln meiner Transliteration sind in den Aussprachehilfen (S. 71) aufgelistet.

Ein wichtiger Aspekt der Transliteration ist der des Schwa: Im Hebräischen kommt das Schwa häufig an verschiedenen Stellen als Halbvokal vor (genannt „Schwa mobile“), der als ein unbetontes e [ə] ausgesprochen wird. In vielen historischen Partituren wird das „Schwa mobile“ mit einem Apostroph transkribiert. Letzterer wird jedoch manchmal auch verwendet, um einen Glottisschlag zu bezeichnen, der ebenso wichtig für die korrekte Aussprache ist.

Dieses Merkmal wird nicht in allen historischen Partituren beachtet, oder nur in inkonsistenter Weise.

Da der Autor größten Wert auf seine Einhaltung legt, wurde der Apostroph als Symbol für das „Schwa mobile“ hier abgeschafft. Letzterer wird vollständig durch den Buchstaben e ersetzt, während ersterer jetzt ausschließlich den Glottisschlag bezeichnet.

Ein weiterer Aspekt ist der des Dagèsh: ein diakritisches Zeichen, das unter anderem die Verdopplung des Konsonanten bezeichnet, in dem es er-

scheint. Doppelkonsonanten werden ebenso nur in manchen Traditionen beachtet. Ich habe beschlossen, sie in meiner Lautschrift in der Hoffnung beizubehalten, dass die Interpreten dazu inspiriert werden, die Übermittlung des Textes mit dieser zusätzlichen Nuance zu versehen. Leider ist es in der vorliegenden Transliterationsmethode unpraktisch, einen doppelten sch-Klang zu vermitteln. Daher musste ich im Rahmen meiner pragmatischen Herangehensweise auf ihn verzichten. Das gilt auch für die Unterscheidung von verschiedenen Konsonanten, die im hebräischen Alphabet enthalten sind und in bestimmten Traditionen immer noch beachtet werden, in anderen jedoch nicht. Das ist ein Zugeständnis, das ich mit größtem Unbehagen gemacht habe, aber ich glaube, dass die Bemühungen, ‫[ א‬ʕ] von ‫[ ע‬ʔ] und ‫[ ח‬ħ] von ‫[ ֿכ‬x] zu unterscheiden, einen Laienchor unnötig belasten könnten.

Wenn man aber leidenschaftlich genug ist, um der „Speise“ etwas mehr Würze zu verleihen, wäre es wünschenswert, einige zusätzliche Aspekte gemeinsam mit einem Experten auszuarbeiten.

Ich hoffe, dass die Aufführung dieser Arrangements Ihnen so viel Freude bereiten wird, wie es mir bereitet hat, sie zu schreiben.

Introduction The present volumes are the product of my thirteen years of experience in arranging Hebrew songs for choir. Their goal is to render a selected repertoire of such beloved songs accessible to choirs of all countries. The works contained here are an expression of the versatility of Hebrew music, which, thanks to its complex genesis, offers a broad stylistic scope, despite its small base of native speakers.

This genesis would be too broad to unpack within the frame of this book, yet I do hope that the information contained in the commentary to the individual songs would provide some insight into it.

Volume I consists of ten sacred and paraliturgical songs that may be sung in diverse circumstances.

The piyutim, medieval sacred poetry in Hebrew or Aramaic, are the preeminent genre in this volume, to which five of the present arrangements belong.

The primary performance opportunity for piyutim, whether publicly in the synagogue or privately at the dinner table, is on the Sabbath. One piece, Behallèl Uveshirìm, is for Passover, and the only modern text featured in this volume. Two other pieces, Adòn Hasselichòt and Avinu Malkenu, are

for the “Ten Days of Repentance” in the month of Tishré. Two of the pieces from Volume I require soloists (Osé Shalòm, Yedìd Nefesh); it is nonetheless possible to assign various passages to soloists in all pieces, as desired by the conductor and in accordance with the available forces. Volume II consists of ten secular songs that have become widely known in Israel during the 20th century. All those songs are part of Israel’s cultural history and belong to its core repertoire. For choral conductors and singers who wish to learn more about the songs in this book, detailed information, as well as translations into English and German, are included in the appendix. All translations are by the author, unless otherwise noted. All biblical quotes are from modern editions of the King James Version (English) and the Luther Bible (German).

My esthetic point of departure is that of maximum simplicity and directness in the delivery of the musical material. My aim as arranger is to provide the audience with the purest form of the music, as handed down by the composers, or by the generations – depending on the origin of the respective

5 song. My approach to the matter can be summed up by the words of the great Jewish ethnomusicologist Abraham Zvi Idelsohn (1882–1938, emphases by the author): “ Artistically successful arrangement of folk-song depends not merely upon faithful adherence to the melody – vitally important as is this care of the tune’s genuineness. The musician must have absorbed the spirit of the tune, and be moved by the emotions which gave it birth, so that, instead of caricaturing the melody by reason of unsuited harmonization, he give it fuller expression through instrumental [or vocal, ann. by the author] accompaniment. He needs must preserve the simplicity of the folktune, must subordinate the instrument to the melody, and must employ only such modulation, progressions and harmonic combinations as spring from the character of the song. The value of all artistic labor in the realm of folk music rests with the composer’s regard for and preservation of the song’s own character.” (see Idelsohn 1929, pp.

461–462)

Some Notes about Pronunciation In a choir in which I sang while it was preparing the work of an Israeli composer, a fellow singer once remarked to me: “Singing in Hebrew? That’s easy! You just sing it like it’s written!” This gentleman underestimated the fact that the transliteration into Latin script is precisely that which enables his own ignorance. Through no fault of his own, he proceeded to sing the words painfully wrong. But how could he have known any better? The language was as foreign to him as could be and its correct pronunciation is a matter seldom discussed in the musical literature. After all, transliterating Hebrew text into Latin script is no easy task. There exists no single, universally agreed-upon method of transliteration, since the phonologies and orthographies of Semitic languages are all vastly different to those of European languages. But if that were not enough, there are also different dialects within Hebrew itself: the appropriate pronunciation often changes in accordance with the background of the work in question.

Therefore, a middle-of-the-road solution is called for, one that can be read with facility by speakers of different languages with acceptable results.

For this reason, I have also standardized all texts

according to the modern Israeli manner. The loss of stylistic diversity in this case is offset by the increase in practical convenience, essential for choirs of non-Hebrew-speakers. Nevertheless, it is still recommended to seek advice from an expert, since the written medium does have its limitations.

I have delineated the basic rules of my transliteration in the Guide to Pronunciation (p. 71).

One important aspect of the transliteration is that of the schwa: In Hebrew, the schwa often occurs in various places as a semi-vowel (called a “mobile schwa”), which is pronounced as an unstressed e [ə] sound. In many historical scores, the “mobile schwa” is transcribed using an apostrophe. However, the latter is also sometimes used to denote a glottal stop, which is also important for correct pronunciation. This is a feature not observed in all historical scores, or only in an inconsistent manner. Since the author places utmost importance on its observance, the apostrophe as a symbol for the “mobile schwa” has been done away with. The latter has been substituted with the letter e, while the former now represents the glottal stop exclusively.

Another aspect still is that of the dagèsh: a diacritical sign that denotes the doubling of the consonant inside of which it appears. Double consonants are likewise observed only in some traditions. I have decided to retain them in my transliteration, hoping it would inspire the performers to instill the delivery of the text with some additional nuance. Unfortunately, a double sh sound is impractical to convey in the present method of transliteration, therefore, as part of my pragmatic approach, I had to abandon it. The same goes for the distinction between different consonants, kept in the Hebrew alphabet and still observed in certain traditions, but not in others.

This is the concession which I undertake with the greatest displeasure, but I find that the effort to distinguish ‫[ א‬ʕ] from ‫[ ע‬ʔ] and ‫[ ח‬ħ] from ‫[ ֿכ‬x] might place an undue burden on an amateur choir. However, if one were passionate enough to add a dash of flavor to the stew, working out some additional aspects with an expert would be desirable.

I hope that performing these arrangements will bring you as much joy as it has brought me to write them.

HEBRÄISCHES CHORBUCH BAND I Ohad Stolarz legt mit dem Hebräischen Chorbuch eine neue Sammlung von Klassikern des musikalischen Repertoires in hebräischer Sprache vor, die von ihm für gemischten Chor a cappella arrangiert wurden. Viele dieser Stücke erscheinen erstmals in Deutschland, fast alle davon erstmals in Chorarrangements.

Der erste Band enthält zehn geistliche und paraliturgische Lieder, die zu den unterschiedlichsten Anlässen gesungen werden können. Dazu gehören unter anderem das PessachFest, die „Zehn Tage der Umkehr“ im Monat Tischré und der Sabbat.

Alle hebräischen Texte sind mit singbaren Transliterationen unterlegt, Übersetzungen und Informationstexte dazu finden sich im Anhang.

A HEBREW CHORAL SONGBOOK VOLUME I With his Hebrew Choral Songbook, Ohad Stolarz presents a new collection of classics of the musical repertoire in Hebrew, arranged by him for mixed choir a cappella. Many of these pieces are published in Germany for the first time; almost all of them are first published as choral arrangements.

The first volume contains ten sacred and paraliturgical songs that may be sung at various occasions. Among these are the feast of Passover, the “Ten Days of Repentance” in the month of Tishré and the Sabbath.

All Hebrew lyrics appear in transliteration underneath the music, while all translations and accompanying texts are located in the appendix.
