Foreword

Der Zauber der Einmaligkeit und Nichtreproduzierbarkeit der Klangerzeugung verbindet das magische Element mit der Körperlichkeit des Klanges. Er entsteht durch die komplexe individuelle Interaktion „Interpret – Instrument“.

Der Arbeitsprozess an diesem wertvollen Buch hat von den Anfängen durch Malte Burba und später dann in ausformulierter Form durch Paul Hübner mehr als zehn Jahre gedauert. Es sollte Information, Orientierung und Inspiration für Komponisten und Interpreten bieten. Umso mehr ist es wichtig, dass diese beiden international bedeutenden Solisten der Neuen Musik dieses Projekt aus der Praxis heraus realisiert haben. Hier werden aus der Perspektive des Interpreten exemplarisch wesentliche Aspekte der Klangerzeugung kompetent analysiert; Geräuschkombinationen, Tonraumerweiterungen, mechanische und spieltechnische Transformationen, Fragilität und Nichtlinearität etc.

Es ist, als ob das Innere des Klanges im Moment seiner Entstehung vergrößert, nach außen transportiert und erklärt wird. Dieses faszinierende Buch zeigt letztendlich, dass die Erforschung der erweiterten Spieltechniken der Blasinstrumente mit ihren unendlichen Möglichkeiten der Klang- und Geräuschfarbenmodellierung noch lange nicht abgeschlossen ist.

Work on this valuable book has taken more than ten years from its inception by Malte Burba, as later formulated by Paul Hübner.

Since the intent is to offer composers and interpreters information, orientation, and inspiration, it is all the more important that this project has been realized from the practical experience of these two internationally renowned soloists of New Music. Here, from the perspective of the interpreter, essential aspects of sound creation, noise combinations, tonalspace expansion, transformations in terms of mechanics and playing techniques, fragility and nonlinearity, etc., are competently analyzed in an exemplary way.

It is as if at the moment of its genesis the interior sound space is enlarged, transported to the outside and explained. Ultimately, this fascinating book is proof that the exploration of the extended playing techniques for brass instruments with their endless possibilities of sound and noise modeling is far from being complete.

1 Basic principles and structural considerations

Seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen spieltechnische Neuerungen mehr und mehr im Blickpunkt des kompositorischen Interesses.

Mit der Erschließung neuer klanglicher Ressourcen sind gleichzeitig die Instrumentalisten gefordert, sich auf diese Herausforderungen einzulassen und die akustische Bandbreite ihres Instruments auszuschöpfen und zu erweitern.

Die Erkundung neuer spieltechnischer Möglichkeiten ist immer eine Grenzüberschreitung, da die geläufigen Antworten und Rezepte der instrumentalen Didaktik selten ausreichend, häufig sogar kontraproduktiv sind. Die gängige Unterscheidung in „richtige“ und „falsche“ Arten der Tonerzeugung verhindert Produktivität und Kreativität, die nötig sind, um ausgetretene Pfade zu verlassen und neue musikalische und spielerische Erfahrungen möglich zu machen. Unerlässlich sind in diesem Prozess die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Komponisten und Interpreten sowie das wechselseitige Annehmen der Rolle des jeweils anderen: Ein Komponist sollte immer die Sichtweise des Interpreten annehmen, um annähernd eine Vorstellung von der Umsetzbarkeit seiner klanglichen Ideen zu entwickeln. Der Interpret wiederum braucht bei der Suche nach neuen Klängen das „innere Ohr“ und die fragend-suchende Klangvorstellung des Komponisten sowie den Mut, das gewohnte Tun zu hinterfragen. Dort, wo beide Rollen verschmelzen, entstehen spannende Ansätze experimentellen Spiels und musikalischer Neuerungen.

Since the middle of the 20th century, composers have become more and more interested in innovative playing techniques. As new timbral resources have developed, instrumentalists have been challenged to exploit and expand the acoustic spectrum of their instruments.

Exploring new areas of technique always means crossing boundaries, since conventional solutions and recipes of standard instrumental methods are seldom satisfactory and can even be counterproductive. The usual judgement of “right” and “wrong” ways to produce a tone interferes with the productivity and creativity necessary to go off the beaten path to make new musical and playing experiences possible. During this process, the rapport between composer and interpreter is invaluable, as well as seeing each other’s role in the process - composers should always be able to see through the eyes of the interpreter in order to develop a rough concept of the feasibility of their tonal ideas.

The interpreter in turn needs to acquire the “inner ear” and inquisitiveness of the composer when searching for new sounds and the courage to put the usual way of doing things into question. Combining both these roles is an exciting approach to experimental playing and musical innovation.

Blechblasinstrumente unterscheiden sich in ihrer Funktionalität grundsätzlich von anderen Instrumentengruppen, was bestimmte Folgen für die vorliegende Thematik mit sich bringt:

Brass instruments function in a fundamentally different way than other groups of instruments.

This has certain consequences for new music:

• Spieltechnische Prinzipien anderer Instrumente sind in den meisten Fällen nicht direkt übertragbar.

• The resulting possibilities are further-reaching, but often more difficult to understand than those of other instruments.

Zugleich eignen sich Blechblasinstrumente aufgrund ihrer Funktionsweise wie kaum eine andere Instrumentengruppe zur Entdeckung eines breiten Feldes experimenteller Techniken, da das Instrument als solches meist auf die reine Resonatorfunktion beschränkt bleibt und insofern den gesamten Umfang physiologischer Klangerzeugung zulässt. Mit anderen Worten: fast jeder vom Körper erzeugbare Klang lässt sich ins instrumentale Repertoire aufnehmen.

Dieser Problematik will sich der vorliegende Band widmen und versuchen, Lösungsansätze bereitzustellen. Dazu gehören eine Katalogisierung von in der Literatur bereits gefragten Spieltechniken, Anregungen zur ihrer Erweiterung, spieltechnische Erläuterungen für Interpreten, Anwendungshinweise für Komponisten und nicht zuletzt Vorschläge für eine praktikable Notation.

Aufgrund der Profession der Autoren sind die meisten Anwendungsbeispiele auf die Trompete bezogen. Wegen der physikalischen Verwandtschaft der Blechblasinstrumente untereinander ist jedoch der Großteil der Spieltechniken übertragbar, sofern nicht ausdrücklich auf das Gegenteil hingewiesen wird.

At the same time, brass instruments, thanks to their way of functioning, are well suited to the discovery of a wide range of experimental techniques as no other group of instruments. Since the instruments themselves are usually restricted to their resonator function, they allow for the entire scope of physiological sound production. In other words: almoust every sound which can be produced by the body can be included in the repertoire of instrumental techniques.

This book is dedicated to this complex topic and will attempt to provide an approach to finding solutions. This includes: a catalogue of playing techniques which are already found in the literature, motivations to expand these techniques, technical explanations for interpreters, tips for composers and not least suggestions for practical notation.

Bevor man versucht, das weite Feld experimenteller Spieltechniken zu umreißen, müssen die Grundlagen erklärt werden, die solche Spieltechniken möglich machen.

Before the broad field of experimental playing techniques can be addressed, the basic principles which make these techniques possible need to be explained.

Blechblasinstrumente unterscheiden sich in ihrer Funktionsweise grundsätzlich von anderen Instrumenten: diese bestehen aus einem Generator, der die Schwingungen erzeugt, und einem Resonator, der sie verstärkt. Blechblasinstrumente hingegen haben eine reine Resonatorfunktion: Ihre Hauptaufgabe besteht in der Verstärkung der Schwingungen, die der Spieler selbst mithilfe der Lippen erzeugt. Der Generator befindet sich also im Körper des Spielers – eine Tatsache, die gerade beim Suchen nach neuen Klangmöglichkeiten von elementarer Bedeutung ist.

Ein normal gespielter Ton besteht aus periodischen Luftdruckschwankungen, die in Hertz gemessen werden. Diese Luftdruckschwankungen sind eine Wirkung des periodischen Öffnens und Schließens der Lippen, die durch die ausgeatmete Luft in Schwingung versetzt werden (dieser Vorgang wiederholt sich beispielsweise beim a1 440-mal in der Sekunde). Zur Erzeugung eines normal gespielten Tones stehen dem Spieler also zwei Funktionen zur Verfügung: Luft und Lippe, deren Gleich- oder Ungleichgewicht die Eigenschaften eines Klanges bestimmt.

Das Blechblasinstrument1 funktioniert zunächst als Verstärker der von den Lippen abgegebenen Schwingung. Öffnen und Schließen der Lippe erzeugen einen Luftdruckimpuls, der beim Austritt aus dem Instrument ein Vakuum hinterlässt. Dadurch kehrt ein Unterdruckimpuls durch das Instrument zu den Lippen zurück, den man als Rückkopplung bezeichnet.

Dieser Vorgang geschieht entsprechend bei jedem zylindrischen Rohr. Zur Anschauung dient das Schlagen mit der flachen Hand auf ein Abflussrohr, was den gleichen Effekt zur Folge hat: Der Grundton des Rohres wird deutlich hörbar.

Brass instruments function differently than other instruments. Most instruments are comprised of a generator, which creates the vibrations, and a resonator, which amplifies them.

Brass instruments, on the other hand, function purely as a resonator: their main task is to amplify the vibrations which players themselves create with the lips. The generator is the body of the player - this is of primary importance in the search for new timbral possibilities.

A tone played in the usual manner is composed of periodic air pressure fluctuations which are measured in Hertz. These air pressure fluctuations are an effect of the periodic opening and closing of the lips which are made to vibrate through exhaled air (this repeats 440 times per second to produce an a1, for example). In order to create a tone in the usual manner, two components are used by the player: air and embouchure, the balance or imbalance of which determines the characteristics of the sound.

Brass instruments1 function as an amplifier of the vibrations produced by the lips. Opening and closing the lips produce an air pressure impulse which, upon leaving the instrument, creates a vacuum. This produces a negative pressure impulse back through the instrument to the lips, which is called feedback.

This can be demonstrated on any cylindrical tube or pipe. In order to illustrate this, slap your palm against the opening of a drainpipe. This will always have the same effect – the fundamental of the pipe is audible.

Soll die Tonhöhe nach oben hin verändert werden, ist ein zweiter Luftdruckimpuls nötig, der mit dem zurückkehrenden Unterdruckimpuls zusammenstößt. An dieser Stelle entsteht im Inneren des Instruments ein Schwingungsknoten, der die Luftmasse im Instrument in zwei Portionen teilt, so dass der zweite Naturton erklingt (die Oktave). Beim Abgeben von drei Impulsen entstehen zwei Schwingungsknoten mit drei Luftportionen: der dritte Naturton entsteht, usw.

Welche Naturtöne sich auf dem Instrument erzeugen lassen, hängt auch vom Verhältnis Rohrlänge/Rohrdurchmesser zu konisch/zylindrischem Verlauf des Rohres ab. Auf einem Didgeridoo lassen sich – wie bei der Klarinette – nur die ungeraden Naturtöne erzeugen; auf einer Trompete lässt sich – anders als beim Flügelhorn – der erste Naturton nur schwer hervorbringen.

In order to raise the pitch, then a second air pressure impulse is necessary to collide with the returning negative pressure impulse. At this point, an oscillation node is created inside the instrument which divides the air mass of the instrument into two portions, and the second partial (the octave) sounds. If three impulses are produced, then two oscillating nodes are produced with three portions of air: the third partial sounds, etc.

Durch die Rückkopplung wird der Ton in seiner Frequenz festgelegt. Es ist jedoch möglich, die Physik des Instruments zu überwinden und zwischen den Naturtönen zu spielen. Diese Technik nennt man Treiben. The tone’s frequency is determined by the feedback. It is possible, however, to overcome the physics of the instrument and to play between the partials. This technique is called pitch bending. This technique has been known for centuries and was also used in the era of historic, valveless brass instruments to produce chromatic notes adjacent to the natural overtones of the high range.

Zur Tonhöhenveränderung stehen dem Spieler bei Ventilblasinstrumenten Ventile zur Verfügung. Beim Drücken eines Ventils wird ein Rohr hinzugeschaltet, d. h. die Rohrlänge des Instruments wird verändert. Bei der Trompete erhält der Spieler durch die drei Ventile sieben mögliche Griffkombinationen:

Einige Instrumente besitzen weitere Ventile, um das tiefe Register zu erschließen und Intonationsungenauigkeiten auszugleichen (Quartventil bei Piccolotrompete, Posaune, Tuba etc.).

Some instruments have even more valves in order to make the low register more accessible and to iron out slight differences in intonation (fourth valve on the piccolo trumpet and tuba, trombone F-attachment, etc.).

Bei Trompeten und Tuben unterscheidet man zwischen Pump- und Zylinderventilen. Trompeten „deutscher“ Bauart sind mit Zylinderventilen ausgestattet, Trompeten „amerikanischer“ Bauart mit Pumpventilen. Außerdem liegt der Ventilblock beim amerikanischen System etwa in der Mitte des Gesamtrohrverlaufs; bei deutschen Trompeten hingegen liegen die Ventile im ersten Drittel, nach einem recht kurzen Mundrohr.

Zwar funktionieren experimentelle Spieltechniken vom physikalischen Prinzip her bei beiden Bauweisen gleich; aus mechanischen Gründen ist jedoch in den meisten Fällen die amerikanische Bauweise zu bevorzugen, die im Gegensatz zu der hauptsächlich in deutschen Orchestern gespielten „deutschen“ Trompete auf der ganzen Welt verbreitet ist.

Trumpets and tubas are either built with piston or rotary valves. “German”-style trumpets are built with rotary valves and trumpets outside of the German-speaking world are generally built with piston valves. Moreover, piston valves are usually built roughly in the middle of the tubing; valves on German rotary trumpets, in contrast, are about a third of the way down the instrument, after a rather short lead pipe.

Slide instruments can lengthen the tubing of the instrument gradually with a moveable slide.

In this way, trombones can lower every partial of the B-flat overtone series by a tritone. Players have seven different overtone series available here as well to produce tones.

Jedes Ventil ist so berechnet, dass es die Luftsäule des „offenen“, also unverlängerten Instruments um einen bestimmten Prozentsatz verlängert. Sobald jedoch schon ein Ventil im Einsatz und die Luftsäule schon verlängert ist, verändert sich die Kalkulation.

Die Erniedrigung eines Tones um einen Halbton erfordert eine Verlängerung der Resonanzrohrlänge um ca. 6%. Bei einer Rohrlänge von 200 cm benötigt das Halbtonventil also eine Länge von etwa 12 cm. Um den Ton um zwei Halbtöne zu erniedrigen, sind also weitere 6% Verlängerung nötig; allerdings müssen diese 6% vom neuen Grundwert, also 212 cm, aus berechnet werden – das Ganztonventil benötigt also eine Länge von 24,72 cm. Für einen weiteren Halbton sind wiederum 6% der neuen Rohrlänge nötig. Soll jetzt aber der Ton um ein größeres Intervall, beispielsweise eine Quarte erniedrigt werden, stehen keine Ventile zur Verfügung, die exakt der geforderten Länge entsprechen. Die Ventilkombination 1+3 (Ganztonventil + Eineinhalbtonventil) ist etwas zu hoch. Der Gebrauch mehrerer Ventile verändert demzufolge die Intonation, was jedoch vom Spieler ausgeglichen oder mit Hilfsgriffen und Stimmhilfen korrigiert werden kann.

Analog dazu ändern sich bei Posaunen die einzelnen Zugpositionen, sobald das Quartventil hinzugeschaltet wird. Dies ist auch der Grund, warum das Kontra-H auf der Posaune nicht mithilfe des Quartventils alleine erzeugt werden kann.

2.2 Exkurs I – Zirkularatmung

Die Zirkularatmung hat ihren Ursprung vermutlich in der jahrtausendealten Tradition außereuropäischer Musik. Auch im Handwerk der Glasbläserkunst, in dem ein kontinuierlicher Luftstrom erforderlich ist, kommt sie gelegentlich noch zur Anwendung.

Mithilfe der Zirkularatmung – auch als Permanent- oder Daueratmung bezeichnet – ist Spielen ohne unterbrechendes Atmen möglich: Einatmen und „Ausatmen“ geschehen gleichzeitig. Der produzierte Ton entsteht jedoch nicht während des normalen Atemvorgangs, sondern wird aus dem Mundraum heraus erzeugt.

Circular breathing probably has its origin in the tradition of non-European music, going back thousands of years. It is also occasionally used in the craft of glass blowing, where a continuous air stream is necessary.

In order to lower a pitch by a half-step, it is necessary to extend the resonating tube length by about 6%. Assuming a tube length of 200 cm, the half-step valve will require a length of about 12 cm. In order to lower the pitch by two half-steps, then a further 6% is necessary; however, this 6% has to be calculated using the new length, so 212 cm – the whole step valve thus needs to have a length of 24.72 cm. In order to lower the pitch still another half-step, the tube has to be another 6% longer, and so on. If the pitch is to be lowered a larger interval like a fourth, for example, then there are no valves available which will produce the exact length.

The valve combination 1+3 (whole-step valve + 1 1/2-step valve) will result in a pitch which is somewhat too high. The use of several valves thus changes the intonation, which however can be compensated for by the embouchure, alternate fingerings and intonation aids.

The lower limit can be explained this way: on many brass instruments, the fundamental (in the case of a B-flat trumpet, the B-flat) is not part of the range due to the tube length/tube diameter ratio and the ratio of conical to cylindrical parts – at least the fundamental cannot be produced using conventional playing technique. Therefore, the first tone which sounds is the second partial. The distance between the second partial and the third partial (a fifth) is played with the aid of valves or, in the case of trombones, by extending the slide. In this way, the third partial is lowered in seven successive half-steps. This is why, on most brass instruments, the natural lower limit is the tritone below the second partial. The flugelhorn is an exception to this. Although the fundamental is playable on the flugelhorn, there is no bridge between the fundamental and the tritone below the second partial (between B-flat and the e above it), which cannot be played using three valves.

A physical upper limit does not exist on brass instruments in the same way. In theory, the harmonic series carries on upward into infinity.

Just how high each instrumentalist can play depends on individual skills. The upper limit often depends on the context in which it appears.

The tension required to produce notes in the high register is similar for singers and brass players: in both cases, the body of the musician is the tone generator, which tires when stressed.

A composer lacking experience with brass instruments can thus get an idea of the playability of certain passages.

3.1.1.1 Flageolett

3.1.1.1 Flageolet

Eine Möglichkeit, den Tonraum im oberen Register zu erweitern, ist das Flageolett. FlageolettTöne bezeichnen Teilschwingungen und haben einen anderen Klangcharakter als normal erzeugte Töne. Erzeugt werden Flageolett-Töne, indem die möglichst trockenen Lippen stark aufeinander gepresst werden und ein starker Luftdruck so nur einen Teilbereich der Lippen in Schwingung versetzt. Die Anwendung dieser Technik empfiehlt sich zunächst aus der Mundhöhle; es kann auf normale Atemluft umgeschaltet werden (vgl. Exkurs I – Zirkularatmung, S. 17).

Flageolett-Töne entfalten ihre Wirkung ab g3 und sind bis g4 gut spielbar, wobei auch hier die Obergrenze von der individuellen Fähigkeit des Spielers abhängt. Alle Flageolett-Klänge sind auch multifrequent ausführbar, bevorzugt mit feuchteren Lippen.

Anders als bei Saiteninstrumenten sind Flageolett-Töne nicht auf die Töne der Naturtonreihe beschränkt. Sie sind in ihrer Stabilität jedoch eingeschränkt. Das exakte Anblasen eines Tones erfordert ein gehöriges Maß an Übung und Sensibilität – auch abhängig vom jeweiligen Zusammenhang – so dass sich der Einsatz von Flageolett-Tönen besonders als tonal nicht exakt definierter Effekt anbietet.

One option to expand the range upward is the use of flageolets. Flageolet tones are partial oscillations and have a different timbral character than normally produced tones. Flageolets are produced when lips which are as dry as possible are strongly pressed together and high air pressure causes a small area of the lips to vibrate.

Players are recommended to initially try to begin the sound using air from the oral cavity; later, switching to a normal air stream is possible (see also Excursion I – Circular breathing, p. 17).

Flageolet tones start to be effective starting at g3 and can be played well up to g4. Again, this upper limit depends on the individual skill of the player. All flageolet sounds can be executed with multiphonics, preferably with wet lips.

In contrast to string instruments, flageolet tones are not restricted to the notes of the natural overtone series. However, they have limited stability. The exact placement of a tone requires a good portion of practice and sensitivity – regardless of the individual context – so that the use of flageolet tones is especially useful as an effect which is not exactly tonally defined.

Da hier die Physik des Instruments überwunden wird und ein Einrasten der Töne nicht gegeben ist, sind diese Töne weniger stabil und sprechen schwerer an als normal erzeugte Töne.

Der 1. Naturton ist auch als „falscher“ Pedalton spielbar.

Als Pedaltöne bezeichnet man die Töne von c abwärts. Da der 1. Naturton auf den meisten Blechblasinstrumenten nicht sauber intonierbar ist, weichen die empfohlenen Griffe von den Parallelgriffen der oberen Oktave ab.

Grundsätzlich sind auch im Bereich der Pedaltöne alle Griffkombinationen für jeden Ton möglich, weil Pedaltöne nicht von der Rückkopplung des Instruments abhängig sind und wie beim Treiben eine Überwindung der Physik des Instruments darstellen.

Als Doppelpedaltöne bezeichnet man die Töne von C abwärts; Töne in der Subkontraoktave (ab C1 abwärts) bezeichnet man als Tripelpedaltöne. Die untere Grenze hängt unter anderem auch von der Mundstückgröße ab und kann sogar den Tonumfang eines Klaviers unterschreiten.

Doppel- und Tripelpedaltöne sind in der Tonhöhe schwerer zu kontrollieren und benötigen unter Umständen eine längere Ansprechzeit.

Zudem wird durch den erhöhten Luftverbrauch die Dauer der Pedaltöne begrenzt.

“False” pedal tones refer to the missing notes between the tritone below the second partial and the fundamental. They are produced simply by bending the pitch downwards (see also page 15). Any valve combination may be used.

Since the physics of the instrument have to be overcome and the pitches do not lock in anywhere in particular, these notes are less stable and do not speak as easily as normally produced notes.

The fundamental is also playable as a “false” pedal tone.

Pedal tones are defined as the notes starting from c and downwards. Since the fundamental cannot be played with clean intonation on most brass instruments, the fingerings deviate from the usual fingerings used an octave above them.

As a rule, all fingering combinations are possible for all pedal tones, since pedal tones are not dependent on the feedback of the instrument and because the pitch bending necessary to play them requires that the physics of the instrument be overcome.

Double pedal tones are defined as the range from C and downwards; the notes of the sub-contra octave (C1 and downwards) are described as triple pedal tones. The lower limit can even be below the lowest note on the piano and depends, among other things, on the size of the mouthpiece.

The pitch of double and triple pedal tones is more difficult to control and under some circumstances they require more time to speak.

Also, the duration of pedal tones is limited, since the volume of air required is greater.

Pedal tones are playable with one or two lips.

When playing with one lip, the lower lip or the upper lip is taken out of the mouthpiece. Only the other lip still vibrates. Not only does this create another timbre, it also enables instruments with smaller mouthpieces to achieve a greater amplitude of vibration, so that the lowest pedal tone regions are playable. This is why the lower double pedal tones and all triple pedal tones should be played using one lip.

Microtonal playing is also possible in the pedal range. However, the precision of such notes cannot be guaranteed, since these notes do not “lock in”. They should be restricted to a few selected notes.

Je mehr Ventile im Spiel sind, desto ungenauer werden die Naturtöne in der Höhe und weichen von der „reinen“ Stimmung ab. Fordert ein Komponist beispielsweise das e2 als Natursept, müsste dieser Ton auf der Trompete in C mit der Griffkombination 1-2-3 gespielt werden (also basierend auf der Naturtonreihe von fis). Das e2 mit 1-2-3 gegriffen ist allerdings viel zu hoch für eine Natursept; der Ton muss also mithilfe des beweglichen Ventilzuges korrigiert werden.4 Die Griffe für eine erweiterte reine Stimmung („extended just intonation“) können mithilfe der unten zu findenden Glissando-Tabelle hergeleitet werden, in der jeder Ton innerhalb eines bestimmen Umfangs um jede beliebige Cent-Zahl erniedrigt werden kann.

Due to the aforementioned intonation inaccuracies of valves, a large number of natural overtones have to be corrected. The more valves in use, the less exact the pitch of the natural overtones in the high range and the more they deviate from “just” tuning. For example, if a composer calls for e 2 as a harmonic seventh, this tone should be played on the C trumpet with the fingering 1-2-3 (the harmonic series starting on F-sharp). Using 1-2-3 for e 2, however, is much too high for a harmonic seventh; the pitch has to be corrected with the aid of a moveable tuning slide.4 The fingerings for extended just intonation can be derived from the glissando table below, where every tone in a certain range can be lowered by any desired number of cents.

Die oben erwähnten „Intonationsprobleme“ macht man sich bei den Griffkombinationen für Drittel-, Viertel-, Sechstel- und Achteltöne etc. zunutze. Als zusätzliche „Verstimmhilfe“ dienen die beweglichen Züge des 1. und 3. Ventils, sozusagen die „Pitchshifter“ der Trompete.

Durch Ausziehen der beiden Züge wird das Rohr des Instruments nach und nach verlängert; der Ton wird im gewünschten Maße tiefer.

Dieses Prinzip der mikrotonalen Tonerzeugung bringt es mit sich, dass Geläufigkeit nur in gewissem Maße erreicht werden kann. Vor allem bei schnellen Bewegungen müssen immer die Zeit und der Weg des Aus- und Einziehens des Ventilzuges hinzugerechnet werden, was Einbußen in Schnelligkeit und Genauigkeit mit sich bringt.

The aforementioned “intonation problems” can be helpful when choosing fingerings for third-tones, quarter-tones, sixth-tones, eighthtones, and so on. The moveable slides of the first and third valves, the “pitch shifters” of the trumpet so to speak, serve as additional “tuning aids”. By extending both of the slides, the tubing of the instrument is gradually lengthened; the pitch is then lowered as desired.

This principle in producing microtones is only useful up to a point, as fluency can only be achieved to a certain degree. Above all, the time needed to extend and retract the tuning slides has to be calculated into all fast movements, and this means decreased speed and precision.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit zur Erzeugung von Mikrotönen ist das „Herunterbiegen“ der Töne mithilfe des Ansatzes (vgl. hierzu den Abschnitt „Treiben“ im Kapitel „Physikalische und physiologische Grundlagen“). Another option to produce microtones is to “bend” the pitch using the embouchure (see the “pitch bending” section in the chapter on “Basic physical and physiological principles”).

Playing selected microtones this way can be quite feasible; however, in passages with many successive microtones, pitch bending will mean decreased precision of transient effect and exact intonation is no longer possible.

Zwar lassen sich manche Kombinationen fingertechnisch bedingt besser, manche schlechter ausführen; es liegt hier jedoch kein Problem vor, das nicht durch Übung überwunden werden könnte.

Anders ist die Lage bei Instrumenten der Posaunenfamilie. Aufgrund des längeren Weges bei der Tonhöhenveränderung und des fehlenden Einrastens des Tones sind Triller im gängigen Sinne nur als Zungentriller (fälschlicherweise oft als Lippentriller bezeichnet) möglich, d. h. zwischen benachbarten Naturtönen, oder bei bestimmten Tönen mithilfe des Quartventils.

Die Möglichkeit des Zungentrillers ist auch auf Ventilblechblasinstrumenten unter gleichen Bedingungen gegeben. Auf diese Weise lassen sich auch Tremoli ausführen, d. h. Trillerbewegungen, die das Intervall einer großen Sekunde überschreiten.

Notwendige Voraussetzung für die saubere Ausführung eines Tremolos ist, dass es sich bei beiden Tönen um benachbarte Naturtöne handelt. Sobald diese Voraussetzung entfällt, muss mit Unsauberkeiten in der Ausführung gerechnet werden, die sich aus dem Überspringen von Naturtönen ergeben, die oft unweigerlich oder unbeabsichtigt mitklingen.

Es lassen sich auch Tremoli ausführen, die den Einsatz von Ventilen erfordern. Auch hier gilt: solange zwischen den beiden tremolierenden Tönen keine weiteren Naturtöne mit denselben Griffen liegen, ist das Tremolo gut ausführbar.

As a rule, there are no limits to playing half-step and whole-step trills on valved brass instruments. Some combinations lie more easily and some are more difficult to execute; but there are no problems here which cannot be overcome by practice.

The trombone family, however, has a different situation. Due to the distance the slide has to travel in order to change the pitch and the fact that the pitch does not “lock in”, trills are only possible as tongue trills (often falsely described as lip trills) between adjacent natural overtones or with the help of the valve attachment.

Tongue trills are also possible between adjacent overtones on valved brass instruments. Tremolos are also produced in the same way; they are simply trills which are larger in amplitude than a major second.

In order to play tremolos cleanly, they should be played using adjacent natural overtones. If this is not the case, execution may not be clean, because when jumping between more than one overtone, overtones on the way could unintentionally or inevitably sound as well.

Als Klangfarbentriller bezeichnet man die Ausführung einer bestimmen Note in wechselndem intonatorischem Kontext, also mit wechselnden Griffen/Zugpositionen. So lässt sich beispielsweise ein f 1 auf der Trompete als 3.

Naturton der Naturtonreihe auf F spielen. Aufgrund der baubedingten Intonationsprobleme beim Betätigen der Ventile muss auch hier die Intonation häufig mithilfe der Ventilzüge oder des Ansatzes ausgeglichen werden.

Der gewünschte klangliche Effekt, nämlich die Wahrnehmung abwechselnder Obertoncharakteristika, ist in der tiefen Lage des Instruments aufgrund des besser hörbaren Obertonspektrums ungleich überzeugender als in der hohen Lage. Daher eignen sich für diese Spieltechnik vornehmlich die tiefen Instrumente der Blechbläserfamilie wie Posaune, Horn und Tuba, die auch schon in tieferen Frequenzbereichen Überschneidungen in den Naturtonreihen aufweisen. In der höheren Lage des Instruments herrscht klanglich eher der Tremoloeffekt auf einem Ton als der klangfarbliche Wechsel vor.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit, komplexe Klangfarbentriller vor allem in der höheren Lage des Instruments auszuführen, entsteht durch die Technik des Treibens. Bei einer engen Zungenposition lassen sich die Physik des Instruments

Timbral trills are produced by quickly changing fingerings or slide positions, so that a certain pitch is produced with swiftly changing intonation. For example, f 1 on the trumpet can be played as the third partial of the B-flat overtone series or as the fourth partial of the F overtone series. Due to intonation problems of pressing valves which are inherent in their construction, the intonation often has to be corrected with the aid of the tuning slides or the embouchure.

The desired effect, which is the perception of changing overtone characteristics, is much more convincing in the low range of the instrument than in the high range, due to the better discernible overtone spectrum of lower notes.

This playing technique is primarily suited to the lower instruments of the brass family such as the trombone, horn and tuba, where the overtone series already overlap in the lower frequencies. In the high range of these instruments, there is more of a tremolo effect on a single note rather than a change in colour.

Bei Instrumenten der Posaunenfamilie lässt sich jeder Naturton der Grundtonreihe des Instruments um einen Tritonus nach unten erniedrigen; hinzu kommt die Möglichkeit des Einsatzes eines Quartventils, was weitere Glissandoreihen ermöglicht. Das Prinzip bleibt aber grundsätzlich bestehen.

Beim Erkunden erweiterter Artikulationsmöglichkeiten interessiert zunächst der Einschwingvorgang eines Tones, der auf Blechblasinstrumenten auf verschiedene Weise geschehen kann.

Beginn eines Tones ist in allen Fällen ein Lippenverschluss – die Artikulation ist [p]. Der Lippenverschluss kann durch einen Vorderzungenverschluss [t] oder durch einen Hinterzungenverschluss [k] ergänzt werden. Diese drei Konsonanten stellen die geläufigsten Möglichkeiten der Artikulation dar und können unterschiedlich kombiniert werden.

Before exploring extended articulation techniques, it is important to first discuss the process of beginning a pitch. This process can be performed on brass instruments in various ways.

In all cases, the start of a note begins with the lips closed – the articulation is [p]. An additional impulse can be given to the closed lips, either by the tip of the tongue closing off the air stream [t] or the back of the tongue [k].

These three consonants are the most common ways to articulate and can be combined in various ways.

Grundsätzlich ist festzuhalten, dass der Gebrauch von Doppel- oder Triolenzunge nicht als eigenständige klangliche Erweiterung zu verstehen ist: Ein Blechbläser ist bestrebt, die drei Verschlüsse [p], [t] und [k] so artikulieren zu können, dass ein Unterschied nicht hörbar ist.

Wann und in welcher Kombination der Spieler Doppel- oder Triolenzunge verwendet, sollte ihm und seinen individuellen Vorlieben und Fähigkeiten überlassen bleiben. Dennoch bleibt es möglich, die Artikulation der verschiedenen Einschwingvorgänge solcherart zu verdeutlichen oder zu übertreiben, dass ein akustischer Unterschied hörbar wird.

If the tip of the tongue and the back of the tongue alternately close the air stream ([t-k] or [k-t]), this is called double tonguing. So-called triple tonguing is produced using a combination of the tip of the tongue closing the air stream twice and the back of the tongue closing it once [t-t-k] or [k-t-t] or [t-k-t].

It should be remembered that double tonguing and triple tonguing are not considered to be extended techniques which enhance timbral possibilities. Brass players strive to articulate [p], [t] and [k] in such a way that the difference is not audible. Double tonguing and triple tonguing and combining the two should be left to players’ individual tastes and abilities. Ideally, it should not be heard which articulation is being used. When air noises are called for, the articulation stop is audible, of course; in this case, the desired articulation should be notated.

Since flutter tonguing is a periodic oscillation, a second frequency comes into play in addition to the note performed. This very low frequency, in the low double digits in terms of Hertz, mixes well with pitches played in the low register (trumpet pedal tones or the contra-octave of low brass instruments). In the high range, however, it impedes the higher frequencies of the vibrating lips. Because the air does not enable the lips to vibrate free of interference in this situation, the high register in combination with flutter tonguing is not effective, neither technically nor timbrally. In extreme ranges (starting at about 2 octaves above middle C on the trumpet) it is therefore recommended to revert to other techniques such as valve tremolos (see chapter on “Timbral trills – enharmonic changes”, p. 40).

Gelegentlich findet sich in Partituren der Hinweis, das Vibrato solle mit dem Zwerchfell ausgeführt werden. Der Effekt eines solchen Zwerchfellvibratos ist bei kontrollierter Ausführung jedoch von dem des „normalen“ Vibratos nicht zu unterscheiden, so dass im Zweifelsfall die Ausführung mit dem Kiefer als ökonomischere Variante bevorzugt werden sollte. Auch beim Kiefervibrato können die Intensität und der Rhythmus des Vibratos beliebig verändert werden.

It is difficult to execute a pure pitch vibrato on a brass instrument. The intensity vibrato is usually performed with the jaw: the oral cavity becomes larger or smaller and the tone becomes louder or softer through changes in the volume of air.

This intuitive way to play vibrato is suitable for all intensity-related vibrato indications.

Occasionally, there is an indication in the score to perform vibrato with the diaphragm. The effect of this diaphragm vibrato, when played in a controlled way, is not distinguishable from the “normal” vibrato. So when in doubt, performance with the jaw is to be preferred, since it is more efficient. When using jaw vibrato, the intensity and the rhythm of the vibrato can be changed at will.

4.1 Einsatz unterschiedlicher Mundstücke

4.1 Using different mouthpieces

Eine Möglichkeit alternativer Klangerzeugung liegt in der Verwendung unterschiedlicher Mundstücktypen.

A way to produce alternative sounds is by using various types of mouthpieces.

4.1.1 Rohrblattmundstücke

4.1.1 Reed mouthpieces

Hier können alle einfachen Rohrblattmundstücke zur Verwendung kommen, wie sie zum Beispiel bei Saxophonen und Klarinetten gebräuchlich sind. Das einzige Problem liegt in der Kopplung des Mundstücks an das Blechblasinstrument. Vom Durchmesser her empfiehlt sich beispielsweise die Kopplung von Tenorsaxophon-Mundstück und Euphonium; für Instrumente mit kleinerer Bohrung sollte dementsprechend ein kleineres Mundstück verwendet werden, so dass auf unhandliche Adaptervorrichtungen verzichtet werden kann.

Die Tonhöhenveränderung kann durch Veränderung von Ansatz- und Blasdruck sowie durch den Einsatz der Ventile geschehen.

Durch den anderen Mundstücktypus wird das Resultat in starkem Maße unkontrollierbar, vor allem deshalb, weil sich die Überblas-Charakteristika im Gegensatz zum normalen Blechblasinstrumentenmundstück verändern.

All single reed mouthpieces can be used, for example, such as conventional clarinet and saxophone mouthpieces. The only problem is connecting the mouthpiece with the brass instrument. For example, a tenor saxophone mouthpiece fits quite well on a euphonium lead pipe; for instruments with smaller lead pipes, a smaller mouthpiece type should be used, so that clumsy adapters can be avoided.

Because the mouthpiece played is different than the one intended, the result is highly uncontrollable, primarily because the characteristics of overblowing are different than those of mouthpieces normally used for brass instruments.

4.1.2 Doppelrohrblattmundstücke

4.1.2 Double reed mouthpieces

Zu den Doppelrohrblattmundstücken zählen Oboen- und Fagottrohre, die direkt oder mithilfe eines konischen Adapters auf das Instrument aufgesteckt werden können.

Beim Spiel mit einem Doppelrohrblattmundstück unterscheidet man drei verschiedene Register:

Double reed mouthpieces include oboe and bassoon reeds, which can be either directly placed on the instrument or with the aid of a conical adapter.

Three different registers can be played with a double reed mouthpiece:

a) Das normale Register in der Mittellage, bei dem das Rohr mit den Lippen umschlossen wird („normaler“ Ansatz) b) das tiefe Register (bzw. ein tiefer Grundton), bei dem das Rohrblatt weiter in den Mund genommen wird (die Lippen umschließen hier den vorderen Teil des Blattes, so dass der ganze schwingende Teil in der Mundhöhle steckt. Dieser Klang besitzt eine multiphone Färbung und kann durch leichtes Abdecken des Schallbechers mit der Hand in der Ansprache verbessert werden. c) Zahntöne im hohen Register, bei denen obere und/oder untere Schneidezähne auf das Rohr beißen.

a) the normal register in the middle range, where the reed is enclosed by the lips (“normal” embouchure) b) the low range (or a low fundamental). For this, the reed is put deeper inside the mouth.

The lips enclose the stem of the reed, so that the entire vibrating surface is inside the oral cavity. This sound has a multiphonic colour and the notes will speak better if the bell is slightly covered with the hand. c) Notes played with the teeth in the high register, where the upper and/or lower incisors bite the reed.

In den Fällen a) und b) lässt sich die Tonhöhe zudem sehr gut durch den Einsatz der Ventile verändern. Je nach Rohr und Instrument unterscheiden sich die erzeugbaren Töne, so dass es sinnvoll ist, sich auf die Angabe des jeweiligen Registers zu beschränken und den ungefähren Tonhöhenverlauf grafisch anzudeuten:

For a) and b), the pitch can easily be changed by the embouchure and the valves. Depending on the reed and the instrument, the pitches which can be produced can vary, so it is wise to restrict the notation to the register desired and to use graphic notation to approximate the succession of pitches to be played:

4.1.3 Metal tongues (for example, toy whistles)

Hier funktioniert das Blechblasinstrument als einfacher Resonator bzw. als Verlängerung des Klangkörpers. Das Mundstück wird direkt oder mithilfe eines Adapters auf das Mundstück gesetzt und angeblasen. Die Tonhöhe ist durch den Anblasdruck und die Ventile/Züge kontrollierbar.

Here, the brass instrument functions as a simple resonator or as an extension of the sound source. The mouthpiece is directly affixed to the instrument and played or attached with the help of an adapter. Pitch can be controlled with air pressure and different fingerings/slide positions.

4.1.4 Mirliton

Auch hier dient das Instrument als einfache Verlängerung des Klangkörpers. Ein Mirlitoneffekt ergibt sich übrigens auch, wenn das Schallstück mit Pergamentpapier bespannt wird (s. S. 107).

4.1.4 Kazoo Here too, the instrument serves as a simple extension of the sound source. By the way, a kazoo-type effect can also be produced by stretching a piece of parchment paper over the bell (see p. 107).

Das Prinzip des Anblasens einer Kante findet auch bei Ventilblasinstrumenten Verwendung.

Die kleinen Luftlöcher am Boden der Ventile einer Trompete ergeben z. B. eine gute Anblaskante. Mithilfe von Ventilbewegungen lässt sich die Tonhöhe minimal verändern. Auch auf dem Mundstück allein lässt sich das physikalische Prinzip des Schneidentons gut realisieren.

The principle of blowing air over an edge can also be used with valved brass instruments. For example, the small air cavities at the bottom of trumpet valves are a good place to produce these. Moving the valves can slightly change the pitch. Whistle tones can also be produced very well using the mouthpiece alone.

4.1.7 Notation

4.1.7 Notation

Da es sich bei der alternativen Klangerzeugung mit anderen Mundstücktypen um ein noch wenig erforschtes Gebiet handelt, hat sich noch keine allgemein gültige Schreibweise etabliert.

Eine schriftliche Anweisung im Notentext ist meist ausreichend; bei häufigem Wechsel ist auch das Notieren kleiner Symbole für die einzelnen Typen denkbar.

Since alternative sound production using other mouthpieces has not been thoroughly researched, no standard notation has been established. Usually written directions will suffice; if changes are called for very often, then notating smaller symbols for each type may be useful.

Der Wechsel zwischen zwei Mundstücktypen kostet unter Umständen Zeit, wenn der Spieler nicht eine individuelle Lösung vorbereitet hat.

Zudem ist der häufige Wechsel des Mundstücks auch mit einem höheren Kraftaufwand der Ansatzmuskulatur verbunden.

Changing between two types of mouthpieces could take time under some circumstances, if the player does not have a ready solution on hand. Also, frequent changes of mouthpieces mean more strain on the embouchure musculature.

Die Klangfarbe von mithilfe anderer Mundstücktypen erzeugten Klängen lässt sich auch weiter modulieren:

The colour of the sound produced with other types of mouthpieces can be further modified:

• durch den Einsatz von Dämpfern • durch den Einsatz halbgedrückter Ventile • durch Dekonstruktion des Instruments (Entfernen von Ventilzügen, Ventilen etc.)

• by using mutes • by using half-valves • by deconstructing the instrument (removing valve slides, valves, etc.)

Hierbei kann die Klangfarbe besonders durch Dämpfer stark verändert werden, so dass der natürliche Klangcharakter des gewählten Mundstücks verloren geht.

The colour of the sound can be considerably changed by muting, so that the natural sound character of the mouthpiece selected gets lost.

4.2 Das Blechblasinstrument als Streichinstrument

4.2 Brass instruments as bowed instruments

Mithilfe eines Bogens lässt sich ein Blechblasinstrument in ein Streichinstrument verwandeln.

Am besten eignet sich ein Kontrabassbogen mit viel Kolophonium, da sich die Masse des Instruments sonst nicht in Schwingung versetzen lässt.

Man streicht z. B. den Schallbecher in verschiedenen Winkeln, so dass unterschiedliche hohe Töne entstehen. Ein ähnlicher Effekt entsteht, wenn man den Schallbecher über eine Holzfläche zieht (z. B. Flügeldeckel). Je nach Material
