Liebe Musikfreunde, liebe Geschäftspartner,

Dear Friends of Music, dear Business Partners,

mit der Einführung unseres neuen Corporate Designs haben wir 2017 ein neues Kapitel in der Verlagsgeschichte aufgeschlagen. Die beiden tragenden Säulen des Programms, unsere Partitur- und Orchesterbibliothek sowie die Edition Breitkopf kommunizieren ihre inhaltliche Erneuerung, die bereits seit einigen Jahren stattfindet, nun selbstbewusst und klar nach außen.

With the introduction of our new corporate design in 2017, we have opened a new chapter in our publishing-house history. The two main pillars of the program, our Partiturund Orchesterbibliothek (Score and Orchestra Library), as well as Edition Breitkopf, now outwardly convey clearly and confidently their regeneration with respect to content, already proceeding now for several years.

Es freut uns daher ganz besonders, dass unser neues Design und damit unsere Leipziger Partneragentur RAUM ZWEI mit dem German Design Award 2018 in der Kategorie „Excellent Communications Design – Corporate Identity“ ausgezeichnet wurde. Im 1. Halbjahr 2018 rückt Breitkopf & Härtel die Bläserkammermusik in den Mittelpunkt seiner Neuerscheinungen. Gleich vier große Sonaten des Spätromantikers Camillo Schumann, bei denen Klarinette und Horn die Hauptrollen spielen, haben wir für Sie vorbereitet. Ich möchte Ihnen diese Werke besonders empfehlen, da sie eine wirkliche Bereicherung der romantischen Bläserkammermusik sind. Daneben präsentieren wir Ihnen in unserer ProgrammReihe Musica Rara zwei hervorragende Arrangements für Harmoniemusik, die mit ihrer klassischen Oktett-Besetzung an eine lange Tradition anschließen.

In the first half of 2018, Breitkopf & Härtel will put wind chamber music at the center of its new releases. For you, we have prepared four large sonatas by the late romanticist Camillo Schumann, in which clarinet and horn play the leading roles. I would especially like to recommend these works to you, as they really enhance the romantic chamber music for winds. At the same time, in our program series Musica Rara, we are presenting you with two excellent arrangements for wind music, which with their classic octet setting are part of a long tradition.

Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt setzen wir im kommenden Halbjahr im Orchesterbereich, genauer gesagt mit Werken für Klavier und Orchester. Zwei Hauptwerke für diese Besetzung erscheinen endlich im Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext: Edvard Griegs Klavierkonzert a-moll sowie, erstmalig in einer modernen Ausgabe, Manuel de Fallas Nächte in spanischen Gärten. Beide Ausgaben unterstreichen unsere langjährige und erfolgreiche Partnerschaft mit dem G. Henle Verlag, bei dem zu beiden Werken die Klavierauszüge erschienen sind. Das Verlagsteam von Breitkopf & Härtel wünscht Ihnen einen guten Start in ein musikalisch spannendes und produktives Jahr 2018.

Another priority in the coming six months will be the orchestra domain, or rather more precisely, works for piano and orchestra. Two major works in this setting will finally appear in the Breitkopf & Härtel Urtext series: Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, together with a first in a modern edition, Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Both editions underline our longstanding and successful partnership with the G. Henle Verlag, where the piano reductions of both works have been published. Mit diesem Begriff bezeichnet man eine rhythmische Akzentverschiebung, bei der zwei Gruppen mit drei Schlägen zu drei Gruppen mit zwei Schlägen zusammengefasst werden. Hemiolen machen richtig Spaß – meine Schüler finden sie cool! * May I introduce: a Hemiola! Großer Klang trotz kleiner Hand Eine kleine Handspanne zu haben, kann für Klavierspieler sehr frustrierend sein. In wie vielen herrlichen Stücken kommen Oktavgriffe und große Akkorde vor, die für sie nur mit Mühe oder gar nicht spielbar sind. Klavierlehrer haben es dann nicht leicht, geeignete Literatur zu finden. Anlass genug für die erfahrene Klavierpädagogin Barbara Arens, Stücke für die „kleine Hand“ ohne einen einzigen Oktavgriff zu schreiben. Der Mix aus eigenen Stücken und unbekannten Sätzen von Komponisten wie Massenet, Sibelius, Marcello u. v. a. garantiert eine stilistisch abwechslungsreiche Vielfalt. Abgerundet wird die Sammlung durch zwei Arrangements bekannter Filmmusik-Titel von Howard Shore und Barbra Streisand.

Big sound despite small hands Having a small hand span on the piano is frustrating. So much piano literature contains octaves or big chords making it difficult or impossible to play. It is a problem for piano teachers to find playable literature for their small-handed students. Reason enough for the experienced piano teacher Barbara Arens to arrange 20 pieces for “small hands” without a single octave. The mixture of tried-and-tested pieces with rather unknown works by composers as Massenet, Sibelius, Marcello and much else guarantees a stylistically rich variety. Arrangements of film music by Howard Shore and Barbra Streisand round the collection out.

Monstermäßige Klänge Wie jedermann weiß, sind die Welten der Menschen und der Monster auf mysteriöse Weise miteinander verbunden. Dem Klavierautor Timothy Sharp ist es gelungen, einige Melodien aus der Monsterwelt in unsere Welt zu transportieren. Da Monster bis zu sechs Hände haben, gibt es Stücke für zwei, vier und sechs Hände. Menschen können gerne versuchen, diese zu zweit und zu dritt zu spielen. Monsterlieder ist ein Heft, das junge Klavierspieler von den Anfängen bis zum fortgeschrittenen Stadium einige Jahre begleiten wird. Die Stücke decken dabei von fetzig bis verträumt einen breiten stilistischen Horizont ab. Manche Lieder haben Texte, die zum Singen oder zum Begleiten ermutigen sollen.

Monstrous Sounds As we all know, the worlds of people and monsters are connected in a mysterious way. That’s why the composer Timothy Sharp has successfully transported a few of the most popular monster world melodies to our world. As monsters have up to six hands, there are pieces for two, four and six hands. Humans can try to play those in twos and in threes. Monsterlieder is a book which will accompany piano players from their first steps to the intermediate stage for a few years. Covering a broad stylistic horizon, the pieces range from groovy to dreamy. Some of the songs have lyrics to encourage singing or accompanying.

A First Edition of Richly-Ornamented Baroque Keyboard Music The renowned harpsichordist and early music expert Glen Wilson went prospecting in the archive of the Singakademie in Berlin and struck solid gold: six out of a total of 26 previously unknown manuscript suites, which create an impressive synthesis of the French and Italian keyboard styles of the early 18th century. Gottlieb Muffat carried forward the work of his predecessors Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Joseph Fux while employed as organist and harpsichord teacher by the court of Vienna. This critical first edition is enriched by valuable notes on interpretation, in particular concerning Muffat’s luxuriant ornamentation. A treasure trove for lovers of late-baroque Clavier music!

Für einen gelungenen Einstieg in das Quartettspiel Das Musizieren im Quartett schult in besonderer Weise die musikalische Entwicklung, das Zusammenspiel, das Aufeinanderhören und die Intonation von jungen Streichern. Entsprechend wichtig ist es, geeignete Spielliteratur für den Anfang zur Verfügung zu haben. Eva-Maria Neumann hat hierfür eine auf zwei Hefte verteilte Auswahl getroffen, die insgesamt 20 leichte bis mittelschwere Bearbeitungen von Bach bis Bartók und eigens komponierte Stücke enthält. Es werden zu allen Stücken Lesepartituren und Einzelstimmen sowie an geeigneter Stelle Tipps zu Intonation, Strichen, Fingersätzen, Tempofragen oder Dynamik angeboten, die den Einstieg in das Quartettspiel erheblich erleichtern.

For a successful approach to quartet playing Making music in a quartet uniquely nurtures young string players’ musical development, ensemble playing, listening to each other, and intonation. It is accordingly important to have appropriate performing literature for starters available. For this purpose Eva-Maria Neumann compiled a selection, dispersed between two volumes, including a total of 20 easy to intermediate arrangements of pieces from Bach to Bartók, together with specifically composed ones. Reading scores and individual parts are offered for all pieces as well as tips on warming up, intonation, bowing, fingering, tempos, dynamics where appropriate, to help get started easily with quartet playing.

Erstveröffentlichung vergessener Schätze Die Werke Camillo Schumanns sind bis heute weitgehend unbekannt, so auch seine beiden Sonaten für Klarinette und Klavier. Schumanns Tonsprache kombiniert die Klangwelt Brahms‘ mit der großen, spätromantischen Liszt-Schule. Seine Klaviersätze erinnern mit ihrer ungeheuren Kraft und Virtuosität zuweilen an Rachmaninow. Die ausgeprägte und einfallsreiche Melodik macht diese Werke zu dem wertvollen Zeugnis eines nie zur Geltung gekommenen Komponisten. Aus dem Nachlass des sächsischen Musikwissenschaftlers Harald Schurz konnten die Autographe der beiden Klarinetten-Sonaten als besonderer Schatz gehoben und hier erstmals veröffentlicht werden.

First edition of forgotten treasures The works by Camillo Schumann are still largely unknown until today, also his two sonatas for clarinet and piano. Schumann’s tonal language combines the Brahmsian sound scape with the grand late romantic Liszt school. His piano pieces are full of tremendous power and virtuosity and range even to sounds reminiscent of Rachmaninoff. The pronounced and inventive melody makes these works the testimony of a composer who has not yet come to the fore. Surfacing as a special treasure from the estate of the Saxon musicologist Harald Schurz were the autographs of both clarinet sonatas, now to be published for the first time.

Lohnende Fundstücke für Hornisten Camillo Schumanns zwei Sonaten für Horn und Klavier entstanden in den Jahren 1936/37. Die Sonaten ähneln einander im Aufbau: Ihre Kopfsätze haben sowohl Passagen rhythmischer Prägung als auch Momente von lyrischmelancholischer Melodik, ihre Finalsätze sind durch virtuose und rhythmische Abschnitte sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet. Die Hornstimmen bewegen sich vorwiegend in der vollen, sonoren Mittellage, wobei auch gelegentliche Ausbrüche bis zum notierten as‘‘ nicht fehlen. Die geschickte Behandlung der Klangbalance sowie die Themenspreizung zwischen Horn und Klavier lassen die Sonaten zu einem überaus lebhaften Zeugnis von Schumanns ausgereifter Kompositionskunst werden.

Worthwhile Find for Horn Players Camillo Schumann’s two sonatas for horn and piano were composed in 1936/37. The sonatas are similar in structure: Their first movements comprise passages of rhythmic character as well as moments of lyrical and melancholic melodies; their final movements are rich in variety by virtuous and rhythmic sections. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional outbursts up to the notated a flat’’ are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann’s mature compositional art.

Harmonisierter Bühnenhit Anknüpfend an die Tradition der Harmoniemusiken – bereits Haydn und Mozart haben dafür komponiert – ergänzen wir das dünne Repertoire für diese Besetzung mit dem vorliegenden Arrangement um einen durchaus anspruchsvollen Programmpunkt. Willi März, bekannter Arrangeur für verschiedenste Besetzungen im Bereich der Bläsermusik, ergänzt die typische Oktettbesetzung (jeweils zwei Oboen, Klarinetten, Hörner und Fagotte) mit einem Kontrabass und einer nicht obligaten Harfe. Die meisterhafte Bearbeitung eines der bekanntesten Werke Johann Strauß‘ wird sich rasch ihren Platz im Repertoire für diese Besetzung erobern.

Wind-Music Stage Hit Following on in the tradition of music for wind ensemble [Harmoniemusiken] – such as was earlier composed by Haydn and Mozart – we are supplementing the thin repertoire for this setting with the present arrangement for a definitely more ambitious program item. Willi März, well-known arranger of the most diverse settings in the wind-music domain, is supplementing the typical octet scoring (pairs of oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons) with a double bass and a non-obbligato harp. The masterly arrangement of one of the best-known works by Johann Strauss will quickly take its place in the repertoire for this scoring.

Oper im Taschenformat Im Jahr 2015 erhielt Philipp Matthias Kaufmann den Auftrag, eine kammermusikalische Bearbeitung zu Motiven aus Engelbert Humperdincks Hänsel und Gretel zu schreiben. Dies gelang ihm überaus kreativ, denn er überführte die beliebte Oper in ein instrumentales Märchen im Taschenformat. Die gewählte Besetzung für Bläserensemble plus Kontrabass entfaltet dabei eine reizvolle Wirkung, während die Verbindung zur dramatischen Vorlage stets hörbar bleibt.

Pocket-sized Opera In 2015 Philipp Matthias Kaufmann was commissioned to write an arrangement for chamber ensemble with motifs of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. He succeeded in doing so quite creatively, as he transferred the famous opera into a “pocket-sized” instrumental fairytale. The selected scoring for wind ensemble plus double bass does have a charming impact, while the connection to the dramatic source is always audible.

Königliche Trauermusik Anlässlich der Trauerfeierlichkeiten für König August I. von Sachsen („August den Starken“) komponierte Zelenka das Requiem in D (ZWV 46) sowie das Officium Defunctorum (ZWV 47), beides integrale Bestandteile der Exequien für den sächsisch-polnischen Herrscher. Zelenka hatte dieses Werk in höchster Eile anzufertigen und setzte dem Anlass entsprechend eine beeindruckende Fülle an Klangfarben und Erfindungsreichtum ein: sordinierte Trompeten und Hörner, Chalumeau, obligate Fagotti sowie äußerst virtuose Solopartien und ausgereifte Kontrapunktik in den Chorsätzen. Mit der vorliegenden Urtext-Ausgabe schließt Barockspezialist David Erler eine der letzten Lücken in der Reihe der großbesetzten geistlichen Werke Zelenkas bei Breitkopf & Härtel.

Royal Funeral Music For the funeral rites after the death of King Augustus I. of Saxony (“Augustus the Strong“), Zelenka composed the Requiem in D (ZWV 46) and the Officium Defunctorum (ZWV 47), both integral parts of the exequies for the Saxon-Polish ruler. Zelenka had to finish this work in a great hurry, and implemented – suitable to the occasion – an impressing abundance of sound colors and inventiveness: muted trumpets and horns, chalumeau, obligate fagotti as well as extremely virtuoso solo parts and fully developed counterpoints in the choral settings. With the present Urtext edition David Erler is closing one of the last gaps in the series of large-scale sacred works of Zelenka in Breitkopf & Härtel’s catalog.

String Quartets op. 59, the 32 Piano Variations in c minor WoO 80, as well as the Violin Concerto op. 61. In the course of time, this â&#x20AC;&#x153;intellectually-stimulating workâ&#x20AC;? found ever-increasing appeal. Throughout the entire 19th century, the 4th Symphony ranked with the most frequently performed works, while its popularity spread to England. Extant are only a few drafts of the work, including the autograph, which served as the main source for the present edition.

Perfektionierter Orchesterklang Edvard Grieg komponierte nur wenige großbesetzte Orchesterwerke, darunter sein berühmtes Klavierkonzert in a-moll. Aufgrund seiner Popularität wurde das Konzert bereits zu Griegs Lebzeiten häufig aufgeführt, was den Komponisten nicht davon abhielt, vielfach Änderungen an der Partitur vorzunehmen. Diese Eingriffe betrafen weniger den Klavierpart als vielmehr die Orchestrierung des Werks, an deren perfekten Ausgestaltung Grieg unablässig und experimentierfreudig feilte. Die vorliegende Urtext-Ausgabe basiert auf der Neuedition der Partitur von 1907 und berücksichtigt zugleich alle von Grieg bis zu seinem Tod vorgenommenen Änderungen.

Perfected Orchestral Sound Edvard Grieg composed only a few large scale orchestral works, among them his famous Piano Concerto in A minor. Due to its popularity even in Grieg’s lifetime, it was often performed. This did not keep the composer from making many changes to the score. Interventions affected lesser the piano part but the orchestration, which Grieg was keen to arrange perfectly and in an innovative way. The present Urtext edition is based on the new edition of 1907, taking also into account the changes that Grieg made up to the time of his death.

Sibelius Finnische Heldenlegenden Genau betrachtet, könnte man Lemminkäinen op. 22 durchaus als die „nullte“ Sibelius-Symphonie bezeichnen, denn die frühen Fassungen dieser vier Tondichtungen gehen bereits auf die Jahre 1895/96, also auf die Zeit vor der 1. Symphonie zurück. Richtig vollendet wurde die in sich geschlossene musikalische Erzählung aber erst 1954, als alle vier Werke gemeinsam im Druck erschienen. Zuvor hatte Sibelius lediglich zwei der Stücke drucken lassen, die beiden anderen hatten 40 Jahre lang in der Schublade auf ihren großen Moment gewartet. Heute wissen wir: Das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Lemminkäinen nimmt uns mit in die finnische Mythologie, breitet vor uns die Weite der finnischen Landschaft aus, erzählt die Abenteuer des Lemminkäinen und die schließlich glückliche Heimkehr zu seiner Mutter.

Finnish Heroic Legends If we take a close look at Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen, it would certainly be possible to regard this work as the composer’s Symphony no. „0,“ since the early versions of these four tone poems go back to the years 1895/96, hence to the time preceding the 1st Symphony. It was not until 1954, however, that the self-contained, musical „novella“ actually reached its completion, since this is when all four works were published together. Previously, Sibelius had had only two of the pieces printed; the other two had to spend 40 years in a drawer waiting for their big moment. Today we know that it was well worth it, for Lemminkäinen takes us on a journey into Finnish mythology, unfolds the full breadth of the Finnish landscape, and relates the adventures of Lemminkäinen and his safe and sound return to his mother.

Meisterliche Einführung Die Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas, die letzte von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy komponierte Ouvertüre, ist nicht als frei konzipierte Partitur, sondern als Eröffnungsstück einer Bühnenmusik entstanden. Allerdings führten ihr sofortiger Erfolg bei der Leipziger Erstaufführung 1839 sowie der Umstand, dass aus Mendelssohns Feder keine weiteren Beiträge zu Victor Hugos Drama folgten, dazu, dass sie sehr bald auch im Konzertsaal bekannt wurde. Die besondere Überlieferungssituation des Werkes, die mehrere Bearbeitungen anlässlich verschiedener Aufführungen einschließt, führte dazu, dass die Ouvertüre die größte Verbreitung in der Fassung des postumen Erstdrucks erfuhr, die auch dieser Edition zugrunde liegt.

Masterly Introduction The Overture to Ruy Blas, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s last overture, was not composed as an autonomously conceived score, but as the opening piece of a stage work. Nevertheless, its immediate success at the Leipzig first performance in 1839, as well as the fact that no further contributions to Victor Hugo’s drama followed from Mendelssohn’s pen soon made it well known in the concert hall. The work’s special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based.

Kleine Schwester der Symphonie Gewiss hatte Robert Schumann recht, als er bald nach Beethovens Tod konstatierte, dass dessen Konzeption der Symphonie als großem, universellem Bekenntniswerk von der nächsten Komponistengeneration kaum fortzuführen sei. Eine Lösung des Dilemmas sah er in der Schaffung freier Konzert-Ouvertüren, wie sie etwa Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy schrieb: Von dessen Ouvertüren wurden vier zu Lebzeiten gedruckt und weitere in Handschriften überliefert, gleichwohl aber häufig und mit Erfolg vom Komponisten aufgeführt. Zu letzterer Gruppe gehört die „Trompeten-Ouvertüre“, die 1825 begonnen und zwischen 1828 und 1833 dreimal zu prominenten Gelegenheiten in Berlin, Düsseldorf und London musiziert wurde.

Little Sister of the Symphony Certainly Robert Schumann was right when he stated soon after Beethoven’s death that the latter’s conception of the symphony as a great, universal confessional work was hardly to be continued by the next generation of composers. He saw a solution to the dilemma in the creation of autonomous concert overtures, such as those written, for instance, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Four of his overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the “Trumpet Overture,” begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 und 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and London.

Paradestück für Posaune Das Concertino Es-dur op. 5 wurde eigens für den Leipziger Posaunenvirtuosen Carl Traugott Queisser komponiert, der auch Widmungsträger des Werkes ist. Die Uraufführung des Werks kann in das Jahr 1828 datiert werden. 1832 veröffentlichte Breitkopf & Härtel das Werk erstmals unter der Katalognummer 5227. Etwa in den 1940er Jahren verliert sich die Spur des Concertinos und Aufführungen sind nicht mehr nachweisbar. Neben dem erst später entstandenen Concertino op. 4 von Ferdinand David gehörte Müllers Beitrag für diese Besetzung zu den meist gespielten und anspruchsvollsten Stücken der Posaunenliteratur.

Showpiece for Trombone The Concertino in E-flat major, op. 5, was composed especially for the Leipzig trombone virtuoso Carl Traugott Queisser, to whom the work is also dedicated. The Concertino’s premiere can be dated to 1828. The work was first published under catalogue number 5227 in 1832 by Breitkopf & Härtel. Sometime in the 1940s the Concertino was lost to sight and no performances known to come from then. Together with the Concertino, op. 4, later composed by Ferdinand David, Müller’s contribution to this genre is among the most often played and most demanding of the trombone literature.

Tschaikowskys „Hamburger Symphonie“ im Breitkopf-Urtext Wie die etwa zeitgleich komponierte Hamlet-Ouvertüre, stellt die 1888 entstandene Symphonie Nr. 5 die menschliche Existenzfrage in den Mittelpunkt: Sein oder Nichtsein – Sieg über das Schicksal oder Sieg des Schicksals? Nach der Uraufführung des Werks in St. Petersburg befielen Tschaikowsky massive Selbstzweifel. Sie veranlassten ihn zu interpretatorischen Veränderungen, die er nachweislich für die Hamburger Aufführung 1889 vornahm. Trotz der überaus positiven Reaktion auf diese Aufführung etablierte sich die Symphonie erst postum im Repertoire. Die textkritische Neuausgabe berücksichtigt neben dem Autograph auch die Partitur und Stimmen des Erstdrucks sowie den nach dem Autograph angefertigten Klavierauszug von Sergej Tanejew.

Tchaikovsky’s “Hamburg Symphony” in the Breitkopf Urtext Like the Hamlet Overture, originating at about the same time, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, composed in 1888, focuses on the human existential question: To be or not to be – triumph over fate or triumph of fate? After the world premiere of the work in St. Petersburg, severe self-doubts demonstrably led Tchaikovsky to make interpretative changes for the Hamburg performance in 1889. Despite the extremely positive response to this performance, the symphony was only posthumously established in the repertoire. Besides the autograph, the new edition’s textual criticism takes into account also score and parts of the first edition as well as the piano reduction produced from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev.

Kulturelle Mischung Die Nächte in spanischen Gärten sind drei symphonische Impressionen für Klavier und Orchester, komponiert von Manuel de Falla während seines langjährigen Aufenthalts in Paris. Das expressive Werk erweckt die südspanischen Gärten mit der ihnen eigenen Mischung aus arabisch-maurischer sowie europäischer Tradition musikalisch zum Leben. Insbesondere der Einfluss der zeitgenössischen französischen Musik ist in dieser Komposition spürbar, die bereits bei der Uraufführung im April 1916 einen großen Erfolg erzielte. Die hier neu vorgelegte Urtext-Ausgabe beruht auf der Erstausgabe der Partitur als Hauptquelle.

Cultural Combination The Nights in the Gardens of Spain are three symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra, composed by Manuel de Falla during his lengthy residence in Paris. This expressive work brings the southern Spanish gardens with their typical mixture of Arabic-Moorish and European traditions to life. Especially the influence of contemporary French music is noticeable in this composition, whose premiere in April 1916 was already a great success. This new Urtext edition takes as the main source the first edition of the score.

Einladung ins Nimmerland James Matthew Barrie erdachte Peter Pan ursprünglich als Theaterstück, welches er im Jahr 1911 zum Roman umschrieb. Die Geschichte des Jungen, der nicht erwachsen werden will, ist seitdem weltweit bekannt. In der vorliegenden Fassung von Martin Bärenz wird der Prosatext durchgehend von Musik begleitet. Verschiedene Szenen bieten die Möglichkeit zur Integration von Kinder-Ballettgruppen, während das Lied der Indianer und das Piratenlied das gesamte Publikum zum Mitmachen einladen.

Invitation to Neverland Originally, James Matthew Barrie conceived Peter Pan as a theatre play, which he rewrote into a novel in 1911. Since then, the story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up is world-wide known. In the present version by Martin Bärenz, a prose text is accompanied by music throughout. Various scenes offer the possibility of incorporating a children’s ballet, whereas the Lied der Indianer and the Piratenlied invite the whole audience to participate.

Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily “utility” music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. Marche fatale ist eine unvorsichtig gewagte Eskapade, die den Kenner meiner Kompositionen mehr irritieren dürfte als meine früheren Werke. Meine Marche fatale hat allerdings stilistisch mit meinem bisherigen kompositorischen Weg wenig zu tun, sie präsentiert sich hemmungslos wenn nicht als Rückfall, so doch als Rückgriff auf jene Floskeln, an welche die moderne Zivilisation in ihrer täglichen „Gebrauchsmusik“ nach wie vor sich klammert, während doch die Musik im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert längst zu neuen, ungewohnten Klanglandschaften und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten vorgedrungen ist. Das Schlüsselwort heißt „Banalität“. Als Kunstschaffende verachten wir sie, versuchen wir, sie zu meiden – obwohl wir auch innerhalb neuer ästhetischer Errungenschaften vor dem Billig-Banalen nicht sicher sind. Das Stück ist nach einem Wolkentyp benannt. Phosphoreszierende Wolken entstehen in der höchstgelegenen Schicht der Erdatmosphäre. In Mittsommernächten erscheinen sie unter Sonneneinstrahlung als silbrige Wellen in 80 km Entfernung an der Schwelle zum Weltall. Obwohl deren Auftauchen in den vergangenen zwanzig Jahren zugenommen hat, sie sind immer noch äußerst selten und geben der Wissenschaft Rätsel auf. Wie diese Wolken bewohnt die Musik von Noctilucence häufig die oberen Regionen der Tonhöhen – schimmernde Streicherflageoletts, Arabesken der Piccoloflöte und helle Klavieroktaven erleuchten die Linie, die durch das Stück fließt. This is a piece named after a type of cloud. Noctilucent clouds form in the highest regions of the Earth’s atmosphere. Occurring at altitudes above 50 miles on midsummer nights, they appear as sun-illumined silvery waves on the threshold of space. Though sightings have apparently increased in the past twenty years, they are extremely rare and remain mysterious to science. Like the clouds, the music of Noctilucence often inhabits the upper regions of available pitch-space, with shimmering string harmonics, piccolo arabesques and bright piano octaves illuming the line which flows through the piece. Das Buch Butès von Pascal Quignard gab mir den Impuls für eine erneute Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Thematik. Butes‘ Begegnung mit den Sirenen ist ein Bild für die Suche nach dem Unbekannten, Butes‘ Sprung ins Wasser gilt als symbolische und poetische Geste, die sich verschiedenen Interpretationen öffnet. Dieser Sprung auf der Suche nach dem ungeheuren Urklang der Sirenen ist Symbol einer inneren Entscheidung, eines Abenteuers in Richtung auf das Neue (vergleichbar auch mit dem schöpferischen Prozess in der Kunst). Dies ist mit all seiner symbolischen und ikonographischen Dimension das Thema von ARGO. (José M. Sánchez-Verdú)

Butes’ encounter with the sirens is a picture of the search for the unknown; Butes’ leap into the water is considered a symbolic and poetic gesture opening up to various interpretations. This leap in search of the sirens’ monstrous Ur-sound is a symbol of an inner decision, an adventure in the direction of the new (comparable to the creative process in art).
