There is currently no walkable roof solution on the market quite like the Infinity slab. Although it could be compared to Filtrón walkable slabs, both the behaviour of the system as well as its appearance are substantially different, as detailed later on.

The slab is manufactured using up to 40% recycled aggregate while maintaining Breinco’s durability and quality standards at all times. This allows us to produce components of the same quality, while managing waste products to avoid refuse being sent to landfills.

The textured finish on the surface of the slab is uniform to the touch, without bevels, and with surface protection that allows stains to be cleaned without altering the colour.

La geometría de poliestireno consigue las mejores prestaciones en cuanto a la estabilidad y rigidez de la superficie del pavimento, de forma que encajan entre sí y evitan el movimiento horizontal y vertical de las piezas integradas.

The geometry of the polystyrene achieves the best possible performance in terms of the stability and rigidity of the pavement surface. The pieces fit together to prevent the horizontal and vertical movement of the integrated pieces.

Los lados cortos del rectángulo (40 cm) usan la terminación media madera y son alineaciones rectas (longitud 402 mm) mientras que los lados largos (60 cm) no tienen media madera y son alineaciones quebradas (longitud proyectada 602 mm), para asegurar la estabilidad del sistema. El corte media madera también permite absorber posibles imprecisiones de formas, conservando la capacidad aislante del sistema en todos los casos.

Además, la superficie inferior de las placas es ranurada para ayudar a la evacuación de agua de lluvia.

The short sides of the rectangle (40 cm) use a half-lap joint and have straight alignments (length 402 mm). Meanwhile, the longer sides (60 cm) have a different finish with a jagged edge (projected length 602 mm), to ensure the stability of the paving system. The half-lap joint also allows any potential uneven shapes to be absorbed, protecting the insulating capacity of the system under any circumstances.

In addition, the lower surface of the sheets is grooved to allow for rainwater drainage.

Índice de Reflectancia Solar / Solar Reflectance Index El valor de SRI posibilita categorizar un acabado en función de su capacidad de contribuir a mitigar el efecto isla de calor urbano. Se deben evitar superficies oscuras que se calienten y almacenen calor, y en su lugar se deben utilizar superficies claras.

The SRI rating makes it possible to categorise a finish according to its capacity to help mitigate the urban heat island effect. Darker surfaces that heat up and store heat should be avoided, and lighter surfaces should be used instead.

La certificación de edificios sostenibles LEED está dividida en créditos que abarcan diferentes aspectos de los edificios: eficiencia energética, uso de energías alternativas, eficiencia del consumo de agua y selección de materiales, entre otros. Entre ellos está el crédito “efecto isla de calor” cuyo objetivo es reducir las islas de calor para minimizar el impacto en los microclimas y los hábitats humanos y silvestres.

The LEED certification for sustainable buildings is divided into categories that cover different aspects of buildings: energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, water-use efficiency and choice of materials, among others. One of the categories is the “heat island effect”, the aim of which is to reduce heat islands in order to minimise their impact on microclimates in both human and natural habitats.

Las islas de calor se definen como las diferencias de gradiente térmico entre áreas.

Para minimizar el efecto isla de calor, una de las opciones es utilizar acabados con un valor mínimo de Reflectancia Solar (SR) > 0,33.

Heat islands are defined as the differences in thermal gradient between areas.

One option to minimise the heat island effect is to use finishes with a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) rating > 0.33.

Para conseguir reducir al máximo el efecto “isla de calor” en una cubierta transitable escogeremos el color de pavimento más claro. El color White de la gama de colores de la losa Infinity aporta el valor más alto de SR=0,42. En este caso, 58 se absorbe y 42 se refleja.

En el caso de una cubierta de un edificio donde por debajo hay uso, interesa considerar el SRI (Índice de Reflectancia Solar) porqué no solo es importante que la radiación rebote si no que interesa también que los espacios debajo no se sobrecalienten. Por eso consideramos también la componente de emisividad.

El Índice de Reflectancia Solar del Color White (SRI) =51,6.

To minimise the heat island effect on a walkable roof, make sure to choose the lightest paving colour. The WHITE colour on the Infinity colour range has the highest SRI rating, at 0.42.

In this case, 58 is absorbed and 42 is reflected.

In the case of a rooftop that covers an area in use below, it makes sense to consider the SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) because it is not only important that radiation is reflected, but also that the spaces below do not overheat. That is why emissivity is also an important factor to consider.

Para una correcta colocación es condición indispensable que el soporte esté bien nivelado y la superficie regularizada.

Para el funcionamiento óptimo del sistema recomendamos, que el forjado se acabe mediante un fratasado de la capa de compresión, o en su defecto aplicar un mortero autonivelante sobre el forjado, previo a la colocación de la lámina impermeable y la losa Infinity, para conseguir una planeidad, que es ideal para el comportamiento mecánico de las piezas y su larga vida útil.

To place the slabs correctly, the support must be well-levelled and the surface must be properly flattened.

To ensure the system operates as well as possible, we recommend that the slab is finished by plastering the compression layer. Failing that, apply a self-levelling mortar on the structure before placing the waterproof sheet and the Infinity Slab to ensure it is fully flat, as this is the ideal condition for the correct mechanical behaviour of the components, so that they have a long useful life.

ensayo de evacuación de agua water drainage test Durante el proceso de investigación y desarrollo de la pieza, se construyó en las instalaciones de BREINCO un modelo reducido de cubierta con el objetivo de poder estudiar el comportamiento del sistema ante precipitación.

During the research and development process for this product, a small roof model was built on Breinco facilities with the goal of studying how the system behaves in rainfall.

El objetivo de estos ensayos fue en primer lugar, determinar la mejor opción de geometría de acanaladuras en la base de la Losa Infinity, y en segundo lugar la influencia de la presencia de geodren en la base de apoyo.

The objective of these tests was, first, to determine the best option for groove geometry at the base of the Infinity Slab, and, second, to study the impact of Geodren on the support base.

El diseño final de la Losa Infinity se basa en los resultados de los dos ensayos que definen el ranurado inferior óptimo y confirma que el sistema es estable ante un volumen de precipitación de tormenta, hecho que asegura un buen comportamiento del sistema frente a condiciones más desfavorables.

The final design of the Infinity slab is based on the results of the two tests that define the optimal lower groove and confirms that the system is stable in storm levels of precipitation, ensuring the system behaves well in less favourable conditions.

Las características de este modelo de ensayo fueron las siguientes:

Recinto cuadrado construido con solera de hormigón y muretes perimetrales, impermeabilizado con lámina PEAD.

Square enclosure built with a concrete slab and perimeter walls, waterproofed with an HDPE sheet.

Dimensiones interiores del recinto de 3 m x 3 m, borde perimetral de 20 cm de altura y pendiente del 1% hacia el lado de sumideros.

Inner enclosure measurements 3 m x 3 m, perimeter edge 20 cm high, and 1% slope towards the drain side.

Se construyen dos sumideros, ambos con diámetro interior de evacuación de 2 cm.

Two drains were built, both with an internal drainage diameter of 2 cm.

· Sumidero inferior (capta el agua del plano inferior o plano base de la capa de poliestireno).

· Lower drain (collects the water from the lower plane or base plane of the polystyrene layer).

· Sumidero superior (capta el agua del plano superior de la capa de poliestireno).

· Upper drain (collects water from the upper plane of the polystyrene layer).

Se ensayaron 6 prototipos diferentes que recogían las siguientes modalidades de ranurado inferior de la pieza de poliestireno:

Sobre los diferentes prototipos colocados en la cubierta, se vertió un volumen de agua de 36 litros y se midió el tiempo de evacuación.

A rooftop was placed on top of the different prototypes. 36 litres of water were then poured on and the drainage time was measured.

Los resultados obtenidos se resumen a continuación:

· En la configuración SIN geodren, la opciones con ranurado inferior (B Y C) arrojaron los tiempos de evacuación de agua mínimos (15 - 18 min.), frente a los tiempos de evacuación de la opción A (45 min.)

· In the configuration WITHOUT Geodren, the options with lower grooves (B and C) gave lower water drainage times (15 - 18 min.), than for option A (45 min.)

· En la configuración CON geodren, también las opciones con ranura inferior (B y C) arrojan tiempos de evacuación mínimos (35 min), frente al tiempo de evacuación de la opción A (52 min).

· In the configuration WITH Geodren, the options with the lower groove (B and C) gave lower drainage times (35 min), than for option A (52 min).

Las conclusiones obtenidas de esta primera serie de ensayos fueron:

· En los ensayos en los que se ha aplicado geodren, se observa el efecto de elemento de laminación de agua de esta capa, de forma que aumenta el tiempo de evacuación a costa de disminuir el pico de vertido instantáneo.

Para las aplicaciones prácticas podemos considerar este efecto para decidir si aplicar el geodren o no.

· In the tests using Geodren, the effect of this layer on the water was evident, and it increased the drainage time while reducing the immediate drainage peak.

For practical applications, this effect should be considered when deciding whether or not to use Geodren.

· Los prototipos con acanaladuras en la base facilitan la evacuación del agua, aminorando los tiempos de evacuación.

No hay mucha diferencia entre las acanaladuras unidireccionales y bidireccionales. Por lo tanto, se escogió un producto de aislamiento existente con ranuras unidireccionales, para completar el sistema de losa Infinity.

· Prototypes with grooves in the base allow water to be drained, reducing drainage times.

There is not much difference between unidirectional and bidirectional grooves. Therefore, an existing insulation product with unidirectional grooves was chosen to complete the Infinity slab system.

Tras la primera batería de ensayos se realizó una segunda, en la que se aumentó el volumen de agua vertida para modelizar la precipitación de máxima intensidad en el área de Barcelona (80 l/hora/m2).

En esta modelización se comprobó que las piezas son estables y se comportan bien ante intensidad máxima de precipitación.

After the first series of tests, a second series was carried out, with a higher volume of water to model the maximum intensity precipitation in the Barcelona area (80 l/hour/m2).

This model found that the pieces are stable and behave well under maximum intensity rainfall.
