JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED Kuala Lumpur, 5 January 2022 — The Japanese Film Festival 2021 officially launched after over a year-long hiatus to continue to provide the best of Japanese films to all film lovers out there. The Opening Ceremony was held at GSC Mid Valley Megamall with YBhg. Datuk Wira Dr. Noor Zari bin Hamat, Secretary General, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture officiating the ceremony.

The Japanese Film Festival 2021 was held at participating GSC cinemas in the Klang Valley (GSC Mid Valley, GSC 1 Utama and GSC NU Sentral) from 6 to 12 January 2022 followed by Penang (GSC Gurney Plaza) and Johor Bahru (GSC Paradigm Mall JB) from 13 to 16 September. JFF then toured East Malaysia to Kuching (GSC CityONE Megamall) and Kota Kinabalu (GSC Suria Sabah) from 20 to 23 January 2022. All films are presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Care & Share: Food for Children

Care & Share: Food for Children programme is an initiative of the Sabah Council of Social Services (Majlis Perkhidmatan Masyarakat Sabah), a council under the Ministry of Community Development and People’s Wellbeing of Sabah (KPMKR), that provides a platform for cooperation between the government, the community and the private sector in fostering and supporting the health developments of the children in Sabah. It was launched by the Minister of Community Development and People’s Wellbeing of Sabah, YB Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya on 16th November 2021. As of 31st January 2022, through the Care & Share: Food for Children programme, a total of 562 food packages had been distributed to children affected by COVID-19 around Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, and Putatan. This programme has received support from the government and private companies to expand to other districts such as Tawau, Sandakan, Beaufort, Kudat, Keningau, Lahad Datu and Tuaran.

Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah current developing legal landscape, which could motivate Sabahan law students to contribute their talents back to Sabah upon completion of study.

In the beginning of building the society, GUNS faced some obstacles such as getting rejected by ROS due to its members being mostly based in KL at the time. However, this was unavoidable since there are no law schools currently available in Sabah which forces many Sabahans to study law in West Malaysia or abroad.

At first, getting people to join the society was the tricky bit as not a lot of people were familiar with the idea of a Sabah-based law student society. Although there is an existing law student society in West Malaysia, it did not cater to East Malaysian law students.

F

ounded by four Sabahan law students at the time, Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah (GUNS) was established in 2019 as a student association that acts in the interests of Sabahan law students from public and private institutes, within and outside of Malaysia.

Fun fact, the idea of having a law society for legal students to collectively branch out and express concerns and desires started from a little kopitiam session at Damai. The founding members of GUNS – Dylan Dumpangol, Joshua Macdonald, Brendon Beliku, and Jonathan Richard Chin; had the idea of forming a law society for Sabahan students to address the issues of the lack of social interactivity among Sabahan law students, the inability to be acquainted with law firms based in Sabah, and the impracticality of attending legal summer programmes or events in West Malaysia.

Nevertheless, doing what students do best, they told their friends, and their friends told their other friends and soon by the end of 2020, they managed to amass over a hundred law students who shared a common interest for a Sabahan-based law student society.

Hence, after a long series of drafting their plans and constitutions, with the aim of bridging frontiers to facilitate and empower future pioneers, Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah was finally registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in January 2021, along with the vision of uniting Sabahan law students and facilitating future employability and connectivity into various legal and non-legal industries within Malaysia.

To connect Sabahan law students to legal firms in Sabah, in 2021, Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah has partnered with Sabah Law Society in providing legal internship programmes to

They realised that law students from Sabah lack representation and guidance, which led to many Sabahan law students resorting to less conventional modes of finding a pupillage or work experience as they return back to Sabah. Furthermore, there was also a gap in raising awareness on Sabah’s legal landscape to students and the younger generation.

According to one of its founders, Dylan Dumpangol, what’s unique about Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah is that it is Sabah-based. Despite the respectable Sabah Law Society (SLS) having long existed in Sabah, Dylan claims that GUNS is different as it caters mainly to Sabahan law students, and the good thing about GUNS is that it is all-encompassing. As law students, they are able to talk about a broad range of issues and still be neutral. GUNS gives Sabahan law students a platform to voice out and share legal knowledge or current world issues.

There was a need for a Sabahan law student society as Sabah has different jurisdictions with West Malaysian law. Thus, having a very niche organisation like GUNS teaches Sabahan law students on the unique legal landscape of Sabah, eg. Native Law, MA63, etc. Moreover, this also raises awareness of Sabah’s 16

In the near future, Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah hopes to spread their wings to more areas of law. Due to the broad

spectrum of law, students that study law don’t necessarily have to become lawyers. They can also be involved in humanitarian aid organisations, NGOs, politics, businesses, etc.

How does one register their trademark and how long will the process take?

It is simple and easy. Just provide us with the company/individual’s company name or logo for us to do the availability check on the trade name or logo. This will take one month from the date of submission. Once it has been approved by MyIPO, we will then submit the formal application to register the trademark. This will take about 12 to 18 months until the Certificate is being issued.

How do we identify brands with a registered trademark?

You could see those logos or trade names which are labeled as “TM” or ® . “TM” means they are in the process of registering its trade name and ® stands for a registered trademark.

Will registering a trademark protect one’s brand internationally or just within the country it was registered?

Once a brand is registered in Malaysia, it will be protected in Malaysia only. But one can protect its brand in any part of the world after they have trademarked their brand in Malaysia.

Although diss songs are common in the hip-hop industry, Foresight Musik holds onto the principle that they will not stoop low and will keep on doing what they love - that is to release high quality music for their listeners.

Foresight Musik have just recently released an album containing 23 tracks called ALL IN. Their album ALL IN showcases a group of diverse musicians being ‘all-in’ and giving everything they got for people to witness the start of the Foresight Musik era. Their goal is to break stereotypes and show to others that Tawau is capable of producing talented individuals that can contribute to Sabah’s rising music industry.

Foresight Musik is a Hip-Hop R&B EDM music and video group based in Tawau, Sabah, with 15 talented members - Focussan, Fez, Ahbank, Yungjiks, Baitisan, Mr. Ameth, N.A.W, Imanboii, SenseDyello, Dopesfiq, dimple., GrizzLee, Luqs, M.I.A, and Roritronics.

Fun fact, Foresight Musik started as an underground band in high school with AhBank and Fez somewhere around the year 2009-2010. However, they collectively formed the Hip-Hop R&B EDM music group, Foresight Musik in 2019.

The name Foresight Musik represents looking ahead into the future and moving forward to reach their goals. Inspired by the Korean Hip-hop scene, Foresight Musik has their own style in expressing themselves through music. Being an independent label, Foresight Musik is very experimental and encourages all their members to explore their creative freedom. Hence, their music sounds diverse, fresh, lit, catchy and yet very distinguishable from other Malaysian Hip-Hop songs.

Being a multi-talented music group, Foresight Musik features a unique collective of talented producers, beatboxers, rappers, singers, an MV director and editor, a visualiser, VFX editor and graphic designer. Ahbank, Baitisan, GrizzLee, Dopesfiq, and Luqs are the main producers of Foresight Musik with their own style and preferences in music. Despite each having their own roles and individuality, every member in Foresight Musik takes part either in singing or rapping.

On their latest album, ALL IN, listeners can expect distinct tracks with various music genres such as R&B, experimental hip-hop, EDM, trap, nasheed, and many more. ALL IN is a work of art. As they have given much thought into each song, Foresight Musik recommends others to not skip on any tracks and listen to their album according to the flow of their tracklist arrangement. t’s better buying a new one rather than repairing it”. That’s a phrase I’m sure most of you have heard of when it comes to your electronic devices. Why is that so? Because we’ve become so accustomed to hearing huge price tags to make small repairs for our devices. However, if all goes well, this won’t be the case for much longer with the Right to Repair (RTR) movement.

To put it simply, RTR is a movement to restore the consumer’s right to choose where and by who they want to repair their devices with. It’s not about forcing the consumer to repair the devices themselves, rather than giving them the option to choose if they want 1st or 3rd parties to do so.

Now, why has this become an issue? We’ve been able to use 3rd party repair shops all this while, right? Well, tech companies are doing all they can to minimise this. They’ve made it harder for 3rd parties to repair devices by: 1.

They also claim the dangers of patent infringements by irresponsible parties towards the company’s parts and technology. Valid points indeed, but there are allegations floating around saying it’s more of a profit issue at the end of the day.

RTR aims to decrease or stop these practises by tech companies.

It isn’t fair that companies get to determine what’s right for us instead of ourselves. I mean, of course going to 1st party service centres might be the safer option, but what if we were strapped for cash and just needed a cheap fix for the device instead of paying a huge price tag or buying a new one? That is something to think about.

Acura’s new Integra

I

t used to be that front-wheel drive (FWD) cars have always had a connotation of being “wrong wheel drive”. However, with the advent of the 90’s Honda Civic and Honda/Acura Integra line, FWD cars have received a cult following. Many fans are always anticipating the next big thing in the FWD car class.

Well, for Integra fans, the wait is over as they’ve just introduced a prototype of the new Integra that’s coming to showrooms soon.

Love it or hate it, a new Integra is surely exciting news to hear from the Japanese manufacturer, especially since the last one was produced more than 15 years ago with the Integra/RSX. The new Integra will share the same platform as the 11th-gen Honda Civic. It certainly has a bold look that is completely different when compared to its predecessors. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the design but it’s still welcome nonetheless.

Powering the new Integra is a 1.5L turbocharged engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Yes, you read that right, a “manual transmission”. It’ll also feature Honda’s famous i-VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Electronic Lift Control) technology, making it the first ever factory turbocharged Integra. There’s been no word as of yet if a Type-R variant will ever be released.

Fingers-crossed though, as that could mean more performance driven handling and drive for potential owners.

The introduction of the new Integra was met with much “controversy”. Online commentaries were on both ends of spectrum. Long time fans felt that the Integra had lost its edge as an exciting sports car. Of course, expectations need to be toned down. Most of us aren’t 100% positive that this will be any less of a car compared to its predecessors. Just look at the Toyota GT86, many said it wasn’t considered a performance powerhouse, yet many love it still. It even spawned another updated version.

So, whatever you think about the new Integra, let’s just leave the judgement to after it hits the road. Who knows, it might just be the best Integra yet. If not, at least the Integra legacy lives on, especially if Acura/Honda plans on better improving it in the future.

et to know the Sabahan law students behind Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah (GUNS) - Dylan Dumpangol, Granville Wilbur, Elaine Soon, Samuel Lim, and Michelle Wong. Despite sharing the similarities of being passionate law students who are highly motivated to bring positive changes to Sabah, what sets them apart are their personality and characters that shape them into becoming who they are today, and who they aspire to be in the future.

Dylan Dumpangol Founder of GUNS

“I may not always know what I should do, but I know what I can do” is a philosophy that reflects Dylan’s life values. As one of the founders and alumni of Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah (GUNS), the society is very close to Dylan’s heart. Dylan still helps out and supports the current high committee of GUNS whenever he can.

Dylan Dumpangol, 25, from Penampang Sabah, obtained his undergraduate Law degree from Keele University in 2020, and is currently pursuing his postgraduate programme at Northumbria University.

A word to describe Dylan is that he is a determined person. When most people are too afraid to start something new or even take the first step, Dylan would work hard to achieve his goals, no matter the setbacks he faces. For him, a remarkable idea is only meaningful when you have the will and desire to execute them as. To Dylan, there is one goal and one end product. At the early stages of GUNS, Dylan and his peers worked really hard and did not give up to build the society to where it is today despite the many challenges that came up.

Dylan is a man of ambition. Growing up, he has always wanted to make a difference in the world. What wakes him up in the morning and keeps Men’s Shirt from Boss | Jesselton Duty Free him motivated in life is the thought of wanting to make a change in the community for people to have better lives. Although living a simple life is totally understandable, Dylan wants to live a life where he could facilitate change, regardless of where he ends up at. He hopes that in 10 years, he would be in the position where he could utilise his creativity, innovation, and explore new ideas to improve the country and community around him.

Being a law student can be tough sometimes, especially when classes are conducted in a different time zone. However, having a routine keeps him in check. Most of the time, Dylan would start the day early and stay productive throughout the day. Despite his busy schedule, he would always make time to go to the gym and train as it keeps him fresh and awake. Exercising is a way of relieving stress for him. And like most students, Dylan works best at night. Every day, when he’s done with his classes, or preparing for the next class, Dylan will study at least 3 hours every night.

However, in his free time, Dylan likes to paint. As a creative person, he is passionate about art, painting, poetry, writing and movies.

Dylan enjoys watching deep and thought provoking movies like Interstellar, Inception, The Prestige and more, as these movies help him have a new perspective on his current life and inspires him to do better Dylan likes to see things from a creative perspective, as creativity for him is a very important tool in life. Especially in an organisation, like GUNS. He believes that to be able to capture people’s attention is the currency of the world. If you have people’s attention, you have the power to create change.

Many students who are thinking about pursuing a law degree often underestimate how powerful having legal knowledge can be.

With law, you can make a difference and change someone’s life for the better. Dylan’s message to himself, his peers, and future law students is that Mastering a law degree is the art of learning how far communication and intellect can actually become opportunities to incite progress and human evolution. Never believe that you are too small or powerless to create the things you wish existed, we all have the strength within us to raise ourselves beyond the ideas of our time. Dylan hopes that the birth of GUNS is a testament that young Sabahans are capable of more and that they should not feel afraid but feel inspired to act on their dreams and make them come true.

Granville Wilbur President of GUNS 2021/2022

There are many words to describe the 23-year old Sabahan law student, Granville Wilbur. But one thing for sure is that he is a natural born leader. As the President of Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah, Granville oversees the society’s direction and ensures all goes according to plan together with his team of committees in serving the interests of Sabahan law students.

Granville is an aspiring and passionate third year law student at Multimedia University, Malacca. Carrying the responsibilities of being the president of GUNS is not an easy task. Nevertheless, driven by motivation and support from his family, friends, and peers from GUNS, Granville works hard and strives to be the best in the things he loves doing.

For Granville, to be able to juggle between his studies and being the president of GUNS requires a sense of responsibility, focus, and a matter of setting priorities. However, when things get tough, what works for him is to take a step back, take a breather, reflect on things he has done and what needs to be done, and take things one step at a time. Being in a good state of mind is important for Granville as it allows him to stay motivated towards his goals.

In between classes and meetings to attend, anything can happen in law school. Hence, he takes pride in his versatility and flexibility in time management, and his ability to keep up with daily changes.

What’s fixed for him is that every day, Granville stays disciplined and wakes up early in the morning to ensure he is well prepared for his classes.

When he’s free from his responsibilities, he would spend his time playing football with his friends. Exercising helps him to keep his mind fresh. Apart from that, Granville is an avid reader. He reads whenever he can, and as much as he can. He enjoys reading current world issues. Born and raised in Penampang, Sabahan issues are very close to his heart. He does a lot of reading on legal matters related to Sabah, eg. MA63, Sabahan laws, Native and custom rights, land laws as those are the things you don’t learn especially in West Malaysian law schools.

Granville’s goal in life is to make positive and progressive changes for Sabah. He also hopes that in the future, he will be doing what he loves, which is to practice law, be a part of law making procedures, and contribute back to the people he loves in Sabah. Being a Sabahan, Granville hopes his Sabahan peers working in West Malaysia or other parts of the world to one day return and contribute their talents, input, experiences, and knowledge back to Sabah, for a better Sabah in the future.

As president of Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah, Granville encourages more Sabahan law students to be involved and join GUNS as the society brings a lot of importance to Sabahan law students. Although the society is just starting out, Granville assures that Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah will be very important and relevant in the near future.

Elaine Soon Vice President of GUNS 2021/2022

Elaine Soon remembers a time back in primary school, when having to fill up a form that asked about what your ambitions were, she never wrote ‘lawyer’ as one of her career choices. That is until she started joining public speaking competitions in high school. Despite having stage fright, she enjoyed every bit of it. Her parents used to joke with her and say, “Oh you talk a lot, you should be a lawyer!”, and that was when she started considering the legal profession as her future career.

After graduating from high school, she took a few months off and did some part time jobs here and there. And when it was time to decide on her career path, she sat down with her parents and eventually decided on studying A-Levels law at Institut Sinaran. Currently at 23 years old, Elaine is now a final year law student at Brickfields Asia College, Kuala Lumpur.

Elaine radiates joy and positivity to the people around her. She is a very easygoing person and cares a lot about the people around her.

Elaine feels happy when everyone gets along. Her biggest inspiration in life is her mother. Elaine takes pride in her caring and patient characters that she inherited from her mother. Growing up, she loved seeing the way her mother treats others around her, and she wishes to grow into someone as kind and caring as her mother as well.

As the vice president of Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah, Elaine is a detailed-oriented individual. She takes her role very seriously and wants to contribute as much as she can while still being part of the high table of GUNS. Despite her busy schedule, Elaine views her studies as her number one priority. As the whole Covid situation forces many students including herself to go through online classes, learning virtually from afar can be demotivating sometimes. Nonetheless, she is grateful to have her peers from GUNS to keep her motivated and inspired at all times. As a passionate law student, Elaine studies hard and manages her time accordingly, especially now that she is in her final year of law school.

Sometimes, she likes to dance for fun or does Zumba as a way of relieving stress from her studies. When asked about where she sees herself in 10 years, she hopes to be at a place where she is stable and happy. Regardless of where she ends up at, she wishes to be someone that her current 23 year old self would be proud of.

Samuel Lim

Director of Publicity and Marketing of GUNS 2021/2022 Samuel Lim is a third year law student from Brickfields Asia College under the University of London LLB Programme. He has an interesting story of what made him stay motivated to pursue a legal education.

Initially, as a kid, he used to love drawing, and he still does today.

However, growing up in a typical asian household, his parents would encourage him to study to become an engineer or a doctor someday, but he knew deep in his heart that a career in science was not his passion.

What started his interest in law goes back to a time when he was a kid visiting a cafe with his mother. As they were having their meal, a group of professionally dressed people with high proficiency in English came into the shop. He was intrigued at the sight, and asked his mother, “Who are those people?”, and his mother said, “They are lawyers.”.

Eventually, after finding out and researching about the law profession, he set his heart onto becoming a lawyer. Hence, Samuel started his early legal education in Institut Sinaran where he studied A-Levels Law, and is currently a third year student in Brickfields Asia College under the University of London LLB programme.

As the director of publicity and marketing of Gagasan Mahasiswa Undang-Undang Sabah and a law student at the same time, Samuel has a lot of tasks that need to be done. Thus, he usually tries to schedule his tasks accordingly to ensure he doesn’t miss anything out using a program called Notion, which he found out from one of his favourite Youtuber, Ali Abdaal.

Nonetheless, outside of studies, Samuel likes to play drums. He has been playing drums since he was 9 years old. He particularly enjoys Jazz and R&B. Talking about drums got him reminiscing about a funny moment in time when he received a noise complaint from one of his neighbours for playing drums at 8AM, but luckily the police officer that came over was nice and kind to him. Nowadays, he would play drums in the afternoon instead. Apart from music, Samuel has always been a creative person. Recently, he has been exploring digital art and has started learning photoshop as well as some video editing skills.

Samuel describes himself as a very simple person. He can be an introvert, or also an extrovert, depending on the situation. At times, he does not mind staying at home to play video games, but sometimes he also enjoys going on adventures or doing outdoor activities with his friends. As an aspiring law student, he hopes to become a well-established lawyer in Sabah someday and hopes to be able to contribute to Sabah’s diverse areas of law practice. Particularly, he aspires to take up diverse cases in areas of criminal and commercial law. In the future, Samuel wishes to create a new area of law that Sabahan lawyers could practice.

His message to himself and to other law students out there is to not give up. A law degree is very diverse. Apart from being a lawyer, a law graduate can venture into many areas, such as venturing into business, becoming an in-house counsel, and many more. And as a student currently going through online classes, he understands that it can get less motivating at times. However, the most important thing is to keep pushing through, remember what your end goal is and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Michelle Wong

Director of Professional Relations of GUNS 2021/2022 As the Director of Professional Relations in GUNS, Michelle Wong, 22, is involved in a lot of tasks related to exchanging correspondences with external parties, be it corporate or legal firms, NGOs, or any other student organisations. In her department, she and her team has organised many collaborative activities such as webinars, IG live events, or GUNS’ annual internship scheme where they assist Sabahan law students get connected with other firms, and give students the opportunity to do their law internship in Sabah.

Michelle has been joining trilingual speech and public speaking competitions since she was in Form 2 and has been part of the mooting scene for the last two years, taking parts in the 2019 LAWASIA Mooting Competition, as well as the recent KL Bar E-Moot Competition. As a public speaking enthusiast, Michelle is passionate in advocating on matters that she believes in.

Michelle has an interesting way of describing herself. To choose one word, although it may sound controversial, she describes herself with the word ‘Lazy’. However, she does not see being lazy in a negative point of review, but rather views it in a positive way that it motivates her to find the easiest and smartest way to complete a task, without having to go through other unnecessary routes. With her ‘laziness’, it allows her to be efficient and effective in a lot of ways.

Currently in her third year of law school at Brickfields Asia College, the commitment of being an active member of various student organisations like GUNS and KPUM can get overwhelming at times. Nonetheless, for Michelle, time management is key. Michelle manages her tasks by practising good time management, and stresses on the fact that you don’t have to do everything in the world. She believes in the quote, ‘quality over quantity’, and does tasks one thing at a time.

Student life during the Covid pandemic can be demotivating for many students. Michelle admits that she has had to spend almost the rest of her time in law school studying virtually. However, she takes this unfortunate event in a positive light. Being involved in student societies allows her to socialise with peers through online events. Aside from that, what keeps her motivated is by focusing on her goals. Being the ambitious person that she is, she divides her goals in two perspectives - short term goals, and long term goals.

When asked about where she sees herself in the next 10 years, she envisions herself being a senior lawyer in a law firm, loving what she does, and being able to be independent and stay motivated to constantly improve in life. And that is Michelle Wong for you, an aspiring law student, a public speaking enthusiast, and an ambitious young Sabahan.

WONDERS OF WILDERNESS: THE OCEAN - WOW 1.0

W

ith the aim of creating awareness through a 3D artshowcase of underwater scenery of Sabah, Wonders of Wilderness - The Ocean - 1.0 exhibition was officially launched at SAG Art Space on the 16th of January 2022. The launching of the project was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Sabah, YB. Datuk Haji Yakub Khan.

Wonders of Wilderness - The Ocean - WOW 1.0 exhibition is located at SAG Art Space (opposite Suria Sabah), and will be showcased to the public for 1 year from the date of launching, which is from 16th January 2022 until 16th January 2023.

Apart from raising awareness of ocean conservation, WOW 1.0 aims to support local artists in the art of painting, sculptural art and 3D art creations. The exhibition features life sized marine life sculptures, Sabah’s first Marine Underwater Art UV room and an art & history gallery. In collaboration with Eco Castle Sdn Bhd, WOW 1.0 has also produced digital art in the form of Augmented Reality, where visitors can use their mobile phones to scan the “AR tracker” signs that were pasted on the pillars of the project site to view 3D animations and information on marine animals.

WOW 1.0 is led by Japson Wong Vun Hueng and Rosmaini Sunarjo; supporting artists - Azlan Dulikab, Lim Sheng Haw, Canoe Tan, Oliver Adam kah and Yahz Exequiel; assisted by Penny Chong, and three practical students - Megann April Kiok, Bryan Law and Megat Fitri from UCSF.

I’m going to sign up for spin classes, drop carbohydrates completely, squat 150kgs and do 200 burpess all on the same day. It’s called working out after all, right?

Instead: Ease into it, and more importantly, give yourself permission to have fun! Unless your goals require it or you enjoy it, exercising doesn’t need to be intense weight training or 20km runs. Diets don’t have to be torture! For example, Badminton and futsal are great forms of exercise while being fun at the same time and can even be quality time with friends and family. Point being, by finding an exercise or sport that you can enjoy, and enjoy consistently, you’ll be more likely to stay committed and motivated!

Misconception 2: Goals have to be set sky high for them to be legitimate. If I don’t manage to run a marathon in 6 months, squat 150kgs, or lose 15kg in 3 weeks, it’s because me or my body isn’t good enough and I might as well stop trying.

Instead: Recognise your goals as meaningful to you. Whether it’s as simple as wanting to fit into an old pair of jeans, wanting to be able to run further, or picking up and playing with your kids without pain, guess what: these are just as legitimate the sky high goals! The best goals and the same diets have the same thing in common: The best ones are the ones you can stick to.

Misconception 3: Thinking that you have to do it all by yourself.

Instead: Putting yourself in a supportive environment can help with feeling stuck or lonely in your fitness journey. At times, your fitness journey towards your goal may get tough. Even if you don’t take the step of finding a personal trainer, being around likeminded people with similar goals is going to increase your chances of sticking to them and achieving them substantially!

It’s the same in the dental field as dentists not only need to be precise but also ensure that their patients are safe and comfortable at all times. I’m sure you recognise some of the tools that dentists use, but let’s get to know them more with Dr. Sylvia Lim of Phi Dental.

Before every treatment, a dentist will need to examine your mouth with a few tools. This ensures that your mouth is prepared for a procedure. The tools are; • Mouth mirror: To check the oral cavity.

• Dental probe: To examine the teeth.

• Dental tweezers: To pick up food debris left in the mouth.

Sometimes, a dentist will also use a bite block to prevent a nervous patient from biting them. This won’t only decrease the chance of biting injuries, but also help the patient to relax. If you’re wondering, comfort isn’t only important for the patient, as dentists also need to be in a “good” and comfortable posture during procedures. That’s why the dental chair is important for dentists to move the patient into a suitable spot. ules need to make sense. If they do, they should be followed. If they don’t, they must be explained; without understanding, they risk being ignored. It takes more time and effort, but I would suggest people are happier to follow them without complaining. Communication working again.

Some rules are completely logical and sensible and of course they should be followed: deciding which side of the road we feel like driving on today will have predictable results. We all need to turn our phones off in the cinema – of course we do, or nobody will hear a word of the film.

But sometimes they really are not.

Someone I know spent two weeks in quarantine in KL after returning from the UK (double vaccinated and pretty careful, and having thus never caught Covid). After two weeks of cold food, no fresh air, bad American movies, they had a positive result. How could this have happened? Telephonically perhaps – as they had not met anybody except the doctor, who tested again and got a negative result. This was not good enough however.

It was on their records and so they were slapped with another week. All subsequent tests have been negative. You decide about that one.

That affected somebody’s life, and, I would argue, their mental health. It was probably a a box ticking exercise, and although this makes things quicker I would argue that it doesn’t make things better.

Covid rules, in the UK, where I have spent this year because of the virus, change all the time. Probably because of the science, but also occasionally I bet because of the politics. It is hard to know what is right, so I fall back on common sense. I choose to wear a serious mask (one of those white beaky things that are FFP3), I don’t kiss people when I see them, I keep my distance and so far, thank goodness, I have stayed well. But no thanks to rules. At the moment I believe I can go to a nightclub heaving with jolly dancers, close together and breathing hard, any time I like. No thanks. Partly because I am 104, and tired, and partly because I don’t want that pesky little virus to fly about and land on me. My decision, my common sense. And so far it has worked.

Rules are good manners really, unless they are based on science or evidence, in which case they are even more important. They should make the majority’s lives better. Getting off planes needs order, particularly in these troubled times. It is such a breath of fresh air to be let off by seat number and I hope it stays after the pandemic has become normality – has it already?

Of course there are rules for reasons we don’t know about, but my beef is with those that someone who got out of bed on the wrong side that day has made, without checking or consulting.

And there are plenty of those. Stand outside while you wait for x. Get three signatures on this piece of paper, despite the fact that your photo is on one of the pieces of identity you ask for.

Don’t use the swimming pool, even though the science tells us Covid doesn’t survive in chlorine and hardly anyone swims there anyhow.

My response? ‘Why?’ Oh my, how I irritated my teachers, but at least I like to think I made them consider. And they usually give me detention! Will I never learn?

Something much less important but still annoying: I lost a parking receipt once at the waterfront in KK. Stupid.

Careless. All those things, but it happens to us all. When I returned, I explained the situation to the lady who had seen me enter a little while ago. She was dogmatic that I had to pay the whole day’s charge. I reminded her that we had greeted each other with a smile, and she had told me where there was a space.

Attempting to win Warner back, Elle successfully enrolled into Harvard Law School despite receiving doubts from people around her. The rest of the story sees how Elle worked her way through as a law student in spite of her often misjudged intellect for her exterior, to winning her first case. What, like it’s hard?

The movie, released in 2001, made over $140 million worldwide on an $18 million budget. In 2003, a sequel followed -- Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. This time, we see Elle on a quest to reunite her infamous chihuahua, Bruiser Woods, with his mother. She learned that Bruiser’s mother is a test dog in a cosmetic lab, to her horror. Consequentially, she and her partner, Emmett (Luke Wilson), works on Bruiser’s Bill to the floor of the House.

The sequel may not have outdone the original. Still, the film series expanded to a DVD spin-off in 2009 and even a Broadway adaptation. 11 different actresses played Elle Woods in different stagings of the musical. Apart from the US and the UK, Legally Blonde - The Musical was also staged in The Netherlands, Germany, and South Korea!

Superfans of the movie would definitely not miss out on Ariana Grande’s Thank You, Next! and Kim Kardashian’s 2019 Halloween, whom both paid homage to it in their videos. Another good news that keeps fans anticipating is the announcement of a 3rd instalment of the series in 2022, written by comedy-geniuses Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor!

If there is a film that I can perfectly quote in my everyday life, it would be this. In case you didn’t know, Legally Blonde was adapted from a novel with the same title written by Amanda Brown, who documented her experiences while being a student at Stanford Law School.

Although Legally Blonde is often miscategorized as a rom-com, this cult classic is more than that. It serves female empowerment above all things romantic that centres on the hyperfeminine Elle Woods, brought to life by Reese Witherspoon in the film.

The film opens with an introduction to our sorority it-girl, Elle Woods, who expected a proposal from her boyfriend, Warner (Matthew Davis). Turns out he asked her for dinner to break up

As Legally Blonde turned 20 last year, people find it more relevant than ever. This film remains timeless not just for the meme-material stills but also because of the plot resonance and relatability. It addresses sexual misconduct, females navigating through power dynamics, (internalized) misogyny, sexism, and stereotypes in the workplace beneath the comedic-relief surface. But Elle, as portrayed in the film, soared and challenged the stereotypes and has been one of the most prominent female empowerment icons in pop culture.

I would personally say Legally Blonde is a cultural reset. It gave a whole new depth to be more than just a pretty face, disproving the whole “dumb blonde” trope. In the words of Elle Woods, “you must always have faith in yourself” we could all use this advice to be unapologetically ourselves in a world where everyone is manufactured to be the same. And if you ever need perm upkeep tips, take it from Elle herself: do not wet your hair for at least 24 hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate.

ell known for its unique Japanese menu, Brown Fox Cafe, the Muji-inspired cafe recently moved to a new location and had a complete makeover. It is now bigger, more spacious, and definitely cosier! Currently situated on a ground floor lot at Sutera Avenue, they were able to make use of the spacious lot and upgrade it into a two-floor cafe to accommodate more customers.

The new interior of Brown Fox Cafe boasts a simple yet minimalist concept. The design is neat, practical and functional yet looks pleasing to the eye. The first floor is the main dining area which features a high ceiling for better air circulation, large windows that allow natural light to flow in, and sleek wooden elements with neutral-toned design that creates a muji-style aesthetic.

There is also an abundant selection of fresh pastries on display.

From the second floor of the cafe, there is a spectacular view that overlooks the entire first floor and a unique huge circular mirror with a cool half-circle bench! It definitely feels like we’re in Japan for a moment there. With the whole cafe being warmly-lit and well-decorated, we’re not kidding when we say every corner of Brown Fox Cafe is insta-worthy!

So what else is new in Brown Fox Cafe? Well, they have a new and more concise menu! Customers can choose from the breakfast set, ramen, curry, udon, soba salad, donburi, and fresh pastries!

They also serve coffee-based beverages with options of hot, cold, or blended, and even offer dairy alternatives for their beverages.

For the breakfast set, we had the pleasure of trying the Saba Shioyaki Set, which is grilled mackerel with salt, served with rice, miso soup, salad, tamagoyaki and tofu. It is a common everyday seafood dish in Japan, and Brown Fox nailed it with this one.

The mackerel was grilled to perfection. The Japanese salt-grilling technique really brings out the umami flavour of the fish. It was crispy, juicy and pleasantly savoury. However, the breakfast set at Brown Fox Cafe is only available from 9am to 12pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and 10am to 1pm on Sundays.

Ramen is a very popular choice among its customers. So we tried out the Pili Kara Ramen, which is ramen in spicy kimchi base soup served with chicken cha-shu, egg and spring onion. The presentation of the Pili Kara Ramen bowl was on point, it felt like it just came out of an anime show. Despite its intimidating red appearance, the kimchi soup was not as spicy as we thought. It was so flavourful and tasted fabulously piquant, we just couldn’t get enough of it.

We also tried out the cafe’s all-time favourite, a classic Chicken Katsu Curry Rice. This dish features a golden-brown breaded chicken cutlet served with side salad and rice. The chicken cutlet was satisfyingly crispy. The Japanese curry sauce was thick and sumptuous, and had a perfect balance of sweetness, umami, and spice. It’s no wonder that this dish is so beloved by many.

Donburi rice bowls are considered to be a quintessential Japanese comfort meal. A new addition to Brown Fox Cafe’s 2022 menu, Chicken Nanban, a Western style dish adapted to suit the Japanese palate, is a donburi dish with deep fried chicken served with tartar sauce and lemon on a bowl of steaming hot rice. It has the perfect combination of sweet, sour, tangy and crunch in a dish.

When visiting Brown Fox Cafe, you must not miss out on their fresh delicious pastries! Especially their Strawberry Croissant and their Vanilla Creampuff. The croissant on its own tastes rich in butter, has a light and flaky texture, and is delicately sweet. But paired with pastry cream and a generous amount of strawberries in between, it felt like a big burst of sweet heaven in the mouth.

For their Vanilla Creampuff, it was hard and crunchy on the outside but soft, light and airy on the inside. Filled to the brim with pastry cream and whipped cream, makes a perfect dessert at any time of the day.

Another dessert worth mentioning are their shortcakes. They look so mini and cute! As good as its appearance was, the taste did not disappoint either. The Strawberry Shortcake that we tried was pleasantly fluffy and the strawberries were sweet and juicy.

We also tried the Mandarin Shortcake, which is a Chinese New Year Special, and it has the right amount of sweet and tanginess, leaving you wanting more!

Featuring talented chefs Chef Adeeb (ANON KL) and Chef Nathanael (BoBo) who are close friends and business partners on a couple of food ventures before Chef Nathanael’s return to KK. Some of their accomplishments in Malaysia’s food industry together are being the first runner up in Malaysian Avant Garde Cuisine Challenge as well as Chef Adeeb being the first runner up at Bocuse D’or Malaysia final round of national selection coached by Chef Nathanael. The duo were the youngest candidate/coach team at that time.
