The Four Core Values to a More Meaningful Year SCHOOL IS BACK!

The school year at Imperium International Secondary School (IISS) commenced with a three-day orientation session. The head of school, Mr. Vasan Varathan, reminded the students of these four core values:

Be curious • Students are welcome to ask questions, no matter how silly they think the questions are. Students are also welcome to explore new subjects and discover their passions outside of the classroom.

Be resilient • There will be times when waves of hardship will come crashing down. However, students are reminded that each hurdle is an opportunity to learn, grow and change.

Be kind • This includes being kind to peers, teachers, animals, the environment and to themselves. Kindness will get someone far in life; it is also the way to gain respect.

Be involved • Students are encouraged to participate in activities, clubs and teams. These will ensure a richer and more meaningful school experience.

Many fun activities were held during the session, such as fitness dance, team building activities, talent showcase, informative talks, and health check-ups. Students and teachers were able to bond, helping them feel more welcomed, especially for the new students. They were thrilled and eager to start their new school year.

For this new school year, IISS hired more experienced and knowledgeable teachers to accommodate more students, as well as opening new facilities that are expected to be ready soon.

how it's done!

Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onions on a medium heat, stirring frequently, until softened and slightly coloured.

The small amount of oil used in this recipe means the onions might stick to the pan at some point; add a splash of water if necessary.

Add garlic and green chilli and continue to fry until cooked and any liquid has evaporated.

Transfer the mixture to a plate, spread out and allow to cool.

Mix the ingredients for the spice blend together

Put the tray in the oven and roast for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and crisp.

Put the minced beef in a mixing bowl, add the onion mixture and all of the remaining ingredients, and mix well.

(Mixing makes the meat more malleable and smoother; the more you work it, it the smoother it gets.)

Shape into four to six burgers.

Heat a griddle pan, hot plate, frying pan or barbecue to hot.

Kedai ReviewKupi

Ayam Penyet Yogjakarta

Right in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, on the busy Gaya Street, lies a straightforward and satisfying eatery: Ayam Penyet Yogjakarta. If you're looking for something different than what the street has to offer and a quick Indonesian meal downtown, this kedai kopi is a top pick. We focused on the grilled option and tried the Ayam Penyet Bakar. The chicken was smoky, tender, and beautifully marinated, a nice alternative to the typical fried penyet. It comes with slices of cucumber, cabbage, and their famous, powerful sambal paired with tomato sauces. The sambal is spicy, but it adds a great kick that makes the dish irresistible. To cater to different tastes, we also sampled the Butter Chicken with White Rice. It was surprisingly good, featuring a butter sauce and tender chicken pieces. It's an excellent, nonspicy choice for a comforting meal. To wash it all down, we ordered the classic local refreshers. The Sirap Limau (rose syrup with lime) was sweet and instantly cooling, while the Teh O Limau (iced lemon tea) was robust and sharp. Ayam Penyet Yogjakarta skips the fancy décor and focuses purely on delivering great flavour and value. For a hearty, affordable, and flavourpacked Indonesian fix on Gaya Street, this is where you should go.
