DEAR VALUED ZOO MEMBERS,

I am thrilled to share some exciting updates about the Baton Rouge Zoo! Your continued support and enthusiasm for our mission make it possible for us to create an extraordinary experience for visitors of all ages.

Recent months have been a whirlwind of activity here at the Zoo. We are delighted to announce the successful completion of our new entrance and will have a grand opening on October 5. We have also completed the new gift shop, animals' night shelters and some animals' habitats. This project has significantly enhanced the well-being of our animal residents and provided our guests with even more opportunities to connect with wildlife.

We are also excited to share the much-anticipated 10th Annual BREW at the Zoo and a family favorite Boo at the Zoo. These events promise to be highlights of the year and we can’t wait to celebrate with you. Be sure to mark your calendars.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated team of animal care specialists, educators and conservationists continues to work tirelessly to provide exceptional care for our animals and inspire a passion for wildlife conservation. We are proud to be at the forefront of wildlife conservation efforts, both locally and globally.

Your membership is invaluable to our success. Your support helps fund critical animal care, habitat improvements and educational programs. We are incredibly grateful for your commitment to the Baton Rouge Zoo and the animals we care for.

Thank you for being a part of our Zoo family. We look forward to sharing many more exciting moments with you in the future.

Sincerely,

NEW at the ZOO WhAt’s (ANd WhO’s)

cOmiNg sOON!

Exciting things are happening at the Baton Rouge Zoo! We’ll celebrate the grand opening of our brand-new front entrance on October 5, and we can’t wait for you to see it. But that’s not all — we’ve also finished building cozy night shelters for our animal residents, along with some fresh updates to most of their habitats. Get ready to hop aboard, because the Zoo train will soon be back on track with brand-new parts and a shiny new route. Come join us and explore all the amazing updates!

ROsEAtE spOONbiLL chicks

Join us in welcoming the birth of three Roseate Spoonbill chicks. These chicks hatched in early August and have since doubled in size. The pink color of their feathers is derived from eating small crustaceans. Roseate spoonbills inhabit marshy areas and wetlands across North, Central, and South America. In the early 20th century, only a few dozen nesting pairs of roseate spoonbills remained. Wetland drainage and excessive hunting have posed threats to these birds.

Our events wouldn’t be possible without the help of dedicated volunteers like you. Your time and effort make a huge impact on our Zoo and the entire community. If you're looking for a fun and meaningful way to get involved, we’d love to have you join our team!

Interested? Reach out to our volunteer coordinator, Lauren Stroupe, at lauren.stroupe@brzoo.org. Your support is much needed and truly invaluable. Thanks for considering!

8 Simple Ways

tO bE mORE sustAiNAbLE

Right hERE iN thE REd stick!

At the Baton Rouge Zoo, we’re passionate about protecting wildlife and our planet. From the towering giraffes to the colorful flamingos, our animals thrive in ecosystems that depend on sustainable choices. Unfortunately, deforestation, pollution and climate change threaten these precious habitats. But the good news? You can help. Small changes in your daily life can make a big difference for the planet — and even protect the homes of animals like our Malayan tigers and pygmy hippos! Here are eight easy ways you can do your part:

1. REDUCE YOUR WATER USAGE

Water conservation is key to protecting our environment, especially in areas with wetland habitats like southern Louisiana. Simple actions — like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, fixing leaky faucets or installing water-saving showerheads — can help reduce water waste. Every drop saved makes a difference for the planet and the animals that rely on clean water sources.

2. GO MEATLESS ON MONDAYS – OR ANY DAY

Reducing your meat consumption is one of the simplest ways to shrink your carbon footprint. Did you know that livestock farming is a leading contributor to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions? By going meat-free just one day a week, you help cut down on the demand for animal products, which can have a significant impact on the planet. Try a veggie stir-fry or a hearty salad on Mondays — it’s a delicious way to do good for the earth!

3.

PLANT

NATIVE PLANTS IN YOUR GARDEN

Native plants are key to supporting local wildlife, including bees, butterflies and birds. By planting native species in your garden, you help create a habitat for pollinators and other animals, while also reducing the need for excessive watering and chemical fertilizers. In Louisiana, consider adding native plants like purple coneflowers, swamp milkweed or southern magnolia to your garden. Your yard can become a mini sanctuary for local wildlife!

4. SAY GOODBYE TO SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Louisiana is known for its beautiful wetlands, but plastic pollution poses a major threat to our waterways. Single-use plastics, like straws and bottles, often end up in our oceans, harming marine life. You can make a difference by switching to reusable bottles and bags. And when you visit the Zoo, be sure to stop by our gift shop to check out our stylish, eco-friendly water bottles and totes!

5. REPAIR, REUSE OR RECYCLE

That old shirt or pair of shoes doesn’t have to end up in a landfill. Give your clothes a second life by repairing, donating or recycling them. Fast fashion is one of the biggest environmental culprits, so every item you reuse is a step toward sustainability. The same goes for everyday items like glass, plastic, and paper — Baton Rouge offers great recycling programs to help you reduce waste.

6. CHOOSE PRODUCTS WITH SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

Palm oil is used in countless household products, but unsustainable harvesting practices are causing massive deforestation, particularly in Southeast Asia — the natural home of animals like tigers and orangutans. Next time you’re shopping, look for products with the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) label, which ensures that the palm oil was responsibly sourced. Small changes in your shopping habits can help protect forests and the animals that live there.

7. SUPPORT LOCAL AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES

Buying local not only helps reduce your carbon footprint by cutting down on transportation emissions, but it also supports businesses that prioritize sustainability. Look for local farmers' markets or stores that focus on eco-friendly products. Here in Baton Rouge, you can find sustainable options that also give back to the community.

8. SUPPORT FSC-CERTIFIED

PRODUCTS

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification means that the materials in products like paper, rubber and furniture come from responsibly managed forests. By choosing FSC-certified products, you help preserve the world's forests, which are crucial for animals that rely on these habitats for survival.

SMALL CHANGES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Making sustainable choices doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether it’s turning off the faucet or choosing a meat-free meal, every small action adds up. Remember, when you visit the Baton Rouge Zoo, you’re not just supporting local wildlife — you’re also contributing to global conservation efforts. Let’s work together to protect our planet for future generations and all the amazing creatures that call it home!

Often referred to as the American buffalo (though technically not a true buffalo), the American bison is a symbol of resilience and a true icon of North America. Weighing in as the heaviest land animal on the continent, this powerful mammal once roamed the plains in vast numbers, with populations spanning across North America.

By the late 1800s, however, relentless hunting had pushed the species to the brink of extinction, with only 541 bison remaining in the wild. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts throughout the 20th century, their numbers have rebounded. As of 2019, there are roughly 31,000 wild bison, and their status has improved to "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red List.

The American bison's recovery is a testament to the power of conservation, and as the national mammal of the United States, it holds a special place in our nation's history. Through AZA's SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program, zoos and aquariums are collaborating with Indigenous communities and conservationists to further protect bison and restore their native prairie habitats.

By working together, we can help ensure the survival of this remarkable species and protect the wild landscapes they call home.
