rebeuf Jesuit Principal Mr. Greg VanSlambrook has been chosen by the Indiana School Counselor Association as the Exemplary Administrator of the Year for 2013. This honor was awarded to VanSlambrook after numerous nominations were sent by the staff of Brebeuf Jesuit. This support was the driving factor behind VanSlambrook’s selection. “To me, the meaningfulness of
this award is all about the fact that several of our Brebeuf faculty and staff decided to get together and nominate me for it,” VanSlambrook explained. “To receive that kind of support and encouragement from colleagues is just so gratifying.” This award came as a shock to VanSlambrook, who wasn’t aware of the award or his nominations. When he was told that a member of the Brebeuf staff had been named Administrator of the Year, he “honestly thought they were taking about someone else.”

hile sitting in her classroom at Hopkins Public High School in the small town of Hopkins, Michigan, Jess Rewa wasn’t quite sure what career she wanted to pursue. Traveling across the world to study in India and Rome were probably not in her wildest dreams, but little did she know, she would have those amazing experiences and many more. Her small farming town and public high school did not provide near the amount of opportunities Brebeuf has to offer, but she didn’t let that stop her from finding her true passion: helping others and making the world a better place. As an graduate of Xavier University and Loyola University of Chicago, Brebeuf ’s new Assistant Campus Minister is not short of life experiences and knowledge. Mrs. Rewa, or Jess, as she prefers to be called, studied and completed Xavier’s Philosophy, Politics, and the Public honors program and then as a graduate student studied Social Justice at Loyola University of Chicago. Jess shared that she loved Xavier’s PPP honors program because it allowed her to study a variety of different subjects and received the great opportunity to study abroad. During her junior year she studied abroad in India for a service learning semester and then the next year in Rome where she was able to focus more on her major of philosophy. While a graduate at Loyola University of Chicago, Ms. Rewa had an internship at The Brother David Darst Center, which is where she began to think about ministry. She explained her reasoning for choosing campus ministry by saying, “I wanted to be in a place where I could develop relationships with students, be able to talk about my faith, social justice, and minister to students.” While attending Xavier, Jess met many Brebeuf graduates and became best friends with three of them; one of them is the reason Jess is part of the Brebeuf family

today. Although she did not have any previous knowledge of Brebeuf growing up, upon arriving at Xavier she quickly heard and learned plenty about our school through her friends who had attended Brebeuf. With regard to the Brebeuf graduates she met at Xavier, she explained that, “When they came into Xavier they already knew all the stuff about the Jesuit values and being people for others and were so mature and reflective, that where they were as freshman was where I ended up being as a senior at Xavier.” With great passion in her voice she went on to say, “I had never heard about any of that stuff until I got to college and then to know that there was a place that did that in high school, I thought that was really awesome!” When Jess is not busy working away to help plan and organize retreats and Masses, she enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, and traveling. With her first semester almost to an end, she said, “I’ve loved getting to know the students I’ve gotten to know so far and so I’m really looking forward to getting to know even more people!” Settled into her new role as Assistant Campus Minister, she also shared, “I hope that everyone in the school will know that if they ever needed someone to talk to or somewhere to come, that they could come to me and my office. That’s what I want to be here for!”
French students visit for cultural exchange

on jour!
Eight French high school students visited Brebeuf from October 18 to November 1st as part of a student exchange program. The students, all of them female, attended regular classes and lived with families of Brebeuf students and packed a lot of fun into their visit as well. Junior exchange host Kate Hahn took her French friend, Sophie, to Chicago for the Fall Break weekend to see the skyscrapers and enjoy the city’s beauty. In a recent interview, Sophie spoke with great admiration for the Windy City. She and her host shared a hotel room and were able to bond, despite language differences. Hahn stated, “She talks in her sleep,
only it’s in French, so it’s pretty cool!” Another exchange host, Junior Olivia Hurst, showed a piece of Indiana’s beauty and went to Stuckey Farm with her French guest. Olivia said that sharing Indiana’s corn and farm life was one of her favorite experiences with her exchange student. What about the French culture that the exchange students brought here? These eight girls, very different and unique to us in many ways shared a little bit about themselves with this reporter. One of them claimed that her favorite type of genre is science fiction, and she is OBSESSED with The Walking Dead. As the exchange hosts noted, their guests were different but with uncanny similarities. Since American food is greatly different from that of France, each exchange student claimed to be taking advantage of the opportunity by eating as much of it as
possible. Ironically, a consensus among them was that they enjoyed the school’s French fries the most. Brebeuf students who are interested in participating in the exchange next
year may may talk to their language teacher or visit the Foreign Language office to apply. Meanwhile, Brebeuf wished its French guests a fond au revoir and a safe voyage back. Photo credit: Anne Hourigan
