It Takes Teamwork to Make the Dream Work

Charity Fashion Show

ndian River is an amazing county filled with philanthropy. In fact, Vero Beach was just voted the second most charitable town in Florida through a study judging the 10 Most Generous, Giving Towns. The Gifford Youth Achievement Center has been graced with many such compassionate supporters over the 18+ years they have been open. Not only did they build the original 18,000sf facility in 1998, they subsequently donated the additional funds to expand another 6,000sf plus six modular units. Twenty-four thousand square feet is a lot of space and GYAC has used each inch to give back to its community. Every corner has been filled with some piece of equipment and the tools to educate. The children who come to the Center benefit from educational activities that help them earn good grades and a high school diploma under the guidance of teachers, mentors, and tutors while adults enjoy a wide range of classes to keep them growing mentally and physically. In addition to state-ofthe-art computer labs, classrooms, and a gymnasium, the campus also contains a County-run Library Extension which is open to the public. This is especially helpful when children need to do research or borrow a book to read but it also serves the local community who would have to travel to Vero Beach or Sebastian to use a library. Generous partners have been adding to the curriculum with classes from the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Riverside Children’s Theatre, Indian River Land Trust, Environmental Learning Center and many others. Adult classes include Computer Labs, Exercise, Qi-Gong, Genealogy, Sewing & Crafts, Bible Study and even a respite program for caregivers who live with memory impaired senior patients called the Breathing Room, a collaborative effort with the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association. There is always a need for funding, including for the 2-year vocational scholarships which are being offered. If you would like a tour of the facilities, they would love to show you around. Please visit the website, www.GYAC.net; stop by 4875 43rd Avenue, or call (772) 794-1005. 14

Fort Pierce Celebrates the Highwaymen Artists

f you grew up in Fort Pierce in the 1950’s, you may remember African American painters who used low-cost building materials for canvas and frames and sold their illustrations of Florida’s beautiful landscapes from their vehicles, often with the paint still wet. ‘The Highwaymen’ - twenty-six of those artists - were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. They are believed to have created more than 200,000 works, some of which are displayed in the White House, in the Governor’s mansion and in art collections around the world. Join us Saturday, February 18th from 10:00am-4:00pm at beautiful Moore’s Creek Linear Park in Fort Pierce to celebrate a cultural phenomenon. The Art Show will feature many of the ‘Original’ Highwaymen artists and their works, tribute booths for deceased artists, ‘2nd Generation’ Highwaymen painters, local cuisine, novelties, free guided trail tours, live jazz performances and a Kids Zone. Visit the website at: thehighwaymentrail.com for informative, intriguing articles as well as thought-provoking historical information that encapsulate the lives and times of this bygone era. Call 772-467-3169 to reserve your seat for a free guided trail tour of The Highwaymen Heritage Trail, an experience you will not soon forget.

Navy SEAL Museum Unveils New Cold War Gallery

T

he Navy SEAL Museum unveiled its Cold War Gallery in the entirely remodeled west wing last November during their Annual Muster. The Museum underwent a major renovation in early 2014 through April of 2015, with an expansion project that included the addition of several innovative and interactive installations. The initial update has proven to be a user-friendly, engaging platform, honoring SEAL heritage and educating others about the history of this Special Operations Force. With the inclusion of mission-specific installations, the new exhibits effectively modernize today’s SEAL tactics. In keeping with current interest, and the Museum’s contemporary vision, the Cold War Gallery hosts a variety of interesting attractions and precious artifacts for the enjoyment of visitors. “The Cold War Gallery will offer guests the experience of numerous SEAL operations and capabilities between 1945 and 2000,” said Ruth McSween, curator of the Navy SEAL Museum. “We have secured several unique artifacts that help illustrate stories from the Korea, Vietnam, and Panama eras, as well as those related to the NASA space exploration and discover program.” For more information visit www.navysealmuseum.org 38
