Message from the President David Prang May brings warmer weather and a continuation of a busy and productive year for the Chamber.

Tulsar hosted our April Business After Hours event in their renovated building that has brought several of their business lines together in Brant County, and now employs 93 people, about 2/3rd from our community.

We look forward to returning to Worthington Drive for the May Business After Hours at Brooks Signs, who will be showcasing their new facility.

All three levels of government tabled budgets in the past two months. Both the federal and provincial governments promised a reduction in regulatory burden, enhanced support for skilled trades, and investment in broadband infrastructure, the latter of which was the topic of a roundtable hosted by the Chamber for the Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition, John Vanthof, in midMarch, with several members participating.

The OCC was pleased to note that in the provincial budget, additional recommendations regarding open tendering, competitive taxation and support for small business development, apprenticeship ratios, and the elimination of the College of Trades were all addressed. A key benefit of Chamber membership is direct access to government through events hosted by the Chamber, OCC, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Paul McCaig, 1st VP, Charlene Nicholson, and I will attend the OCC AGM in early May to help determine advocacy priorities for the OCC for 2019.

I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Step into Spring Fashion Show organized by the Women in Business committee in April, a sold-out event with lots of potential to grow!

The Business Excellence Awards Committee and Chamber staff are finalizing preparations for the premiere business industry event in our area on May 16th, and look forward to celebrating this year’s nominees and winners.

Finally, our CEO Recruitment Committee chaired by 2nd VP Ken McNaughton has been working hard towards finding the next CEO for Chamber, as we celebrate Charlene Nicholson’s 15 years in leadership. Budget 2019 Strikes Balance for Business Community The business community is somewhat encouraged by the robust plan to return the Province to a balanced budget, including meaningful action to improve government accountability, as detailed in the 2019 Ontario Budget, “Protecting What Matters Most.”

“Our message to the government in advance of Budget 2019 had been clear: bring down the deficit, focus on competitive taxation, and choose strategic investments that contribute to Ontario’s long-term economic growth.

This Budget is focused on spending smarter rather than resorting to austerity measures,” said Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC).

Chambers of Commerce are pleased to see that the Government of Ontario heard the message of the Ontario Chamber Network, and is taking reasonable steps to build a stronger Ontario. Their balance of fiscal sustainability and critical investments in skills and infrastructure will promote long-term economic growth. The proposed investments in broadband infrastructure and skills development, especially, will create

Members in the News BRC wins EDCO Award of Excellence We are pleased to share that on Thursday, January 31, 2019, the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDC) awarded the Brantford-Brant Business Resource Enterprise Centre (BRC) with the Regional and Cross-Border Collaboration & Partnership Award of Excellence. The award was presented to the BRC in recognition of their creation and delivery of the StudentBiz program – Developing High School Entrepreneurs.

StudentBiz fosters high school entrepreneurship by providing students in the region with an opportunity to learn skills in a hands-on learning environment with the ability to earn two co-op credits through their local high schools. The program was delivered in partnership with the Grand Erie

The BRC created and facilitated the training curriculum and helped students in creating their own business plans and financial documents. Students who successfully completed the program had the opportunity to apply to the provincially-funded Summer Company grant program.

District School Board, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, Venture Norfolk, Workforce Planning of Grand Erie, and the municipal Economic Development and Tourism Departments in Haldimand, Norfolk, the County of Brant and Brantford.

The initial projection for student engagement was a total of 15 students (5 from each of the local area offices) with the expectation that 10 students would work on their businesses throughout the summer.

In actuality, 22 students registered and participated in the program and 13 students successfully started and operated their own businesses in the summer of 2018.

Busting Stereotypes About Women in Business What do you picture when you hear the phrase, “business leader”? For a long time both the popular image—and the demographic reality—of business has been a sector dominated by men. But that is changing: women lead 50 percent of all new business in Canada as well as partially or wholly own 47 percent of all small and medium-sized enterprises.

Businesses led by women create more jobs and have a higher chance of survival even though they generally tend to be smaller than businesses led by men Yet women in business persistently face a unique set of challenges: sexism, harassment, ageism, the pay gap, and poor access to capital, to name just a few. And although the pay gap between men and women has narrowed over the past 30 years, it remains a real problem for working women across this country.

We have come a long way, but there is undoubtedly still much work to be done.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is well aware of the stereotype of a chamber of commerce as an ‘old boys club’. But so much has changed over the past few decades. Contrary to popular belief, we are proud to say our movement is now one led by women: 73 percent of leadership roles in our chamber network are held by women and the OCC’s Board of Directors consists of 50 percent women. These leaders represent a diversity of industries in communities throughout Ontario, from Brantford/Brant to Thunder Bay. They are responsible for steering important public policy conversations at both the provincial level and on the ground within their local municipalities, and are tireless advocates for economic prosperity for all Ontarians.

To build a stronger Ontario, it is critical that we continue to advance women in leadership positions. This means that we must continue to improve the alignment between public policy and economic

outcomes. Breaking down barriers women face will lead to new economic activity and growth: more female entrepreneurs mean more wealth generation, more women in the skilled trades mean more opportunities to build, and more women in decision-making roles mean more inclusive outcomes.

In the meantime, if you are a woman in business looking to become part of an inclusive and impactful network of leaders and advocates, your local chamber of commerce is the place to start.

You have saved enough for retirement. You will choose to share the fruits of this hard work and effort with your family, whether through gifts while you are living or after you pass; or, (b) You have perhaps worked, and have been very lucky. You may not have saved a penny, let alone contemplated retirement (daydreaming excluded).

You will be fortunate enough to share in the fruits of a family member’s hard work through receiving gifts or an inheritance.

The housing market in Brantford and Brant County was a benefactor of this exodus. The result? Housing prices in our community increased, likewise pricing many first time homebuyers here out of the market.

In this tough time, a generous parent may assist a child in purchasing that first home by providing a monetary gift to be put toward the down payment – let’s say $25,000. The child and his married spouse then move into the newly purchased home. Sadly, after some time, the relationship breaks down

and the child and his spouse separate.

When dividing their matrimonial property, who gets to keep the $25,000 gift?

Part I of Ontario’s Family Law Act governs how we divide matrimonial property after a marriage breakdown. A gift or inheritance received from a parent (or other third party) during marriage is what we refer to as “excluded property”.

In normal course, this means that when two spouses separate, the gift or inheritance is “excluded” from the division of property. Essentially, the spouse who received the gift gets to keep the gift, and does not have to share it with the other spouse.

exception is when the gift is used to contribute toward a matrimonial home (the house that two spouses ordinarily occupy together). The gift could be put toward a down payment, a contribution to mortgage payments, or for that desperately needed kitchen renovation. When this happens, the gift loses its character as “excluded property”, and upon separation, each spouse shares in that $25,000 gift equally. This is often the unintentional result of a wellintentioned act by a parent or child.

There are ways to avoid this result, for example, through a properly drafted marriage contract, or by providing a properly documented loan instead of a gift.

The potential outcomes of giving or receiving a gift or inheritance should be properly canvassed prior to giving or receiving that gift or inheritance. People with dementia are at the centre of everything that we do and it is our hope that all persons affected by dementia live well as vital and integral members of their community. The Alzheimer Society of Brant provides confidential counselling and support, health promotion and exercise programs, social networking and an education series that assists persons with

Members in the News Kiwanis Club of Brantford The year was 1919. A loaf of bread cost five cents and an average Brantford home sold for $3,500.

The Mayor of Brantford was Morrison MacBride and during that year Mayor MacBride attended the grand opening of the Temple Vaudeville Theatre now called the Sanderson Centre.

Another important event happened that year - The Kiwanis Club of Brantford was formed.

The new club grew quickly and began to positively impact the city through its dedication to serving children and meeting needs in the community. Over the years, the members worked diligently to provide much needed services including summer camp opportunities for thousands of children and the Kiwanis Music Festival. Fundraisers to support the projects included cookie sales, raffles and The Great Men of Sports Dinner.

One hundred years later the Kiwanis Club continues to attract talented, skilled and caring members, committed to supporting a long list of projects including the Children’s Safety Village of Brant, Kiwanis Field and the needs of children attending schools in the core area of the city.

The current membership is a diverse group of men and women representing a cross

section of professions and backgrounds.

There are two things all members have in common – a desire to serve their community and the ability to have a good time while doing it.

Why do you need Critical Illness Insurance?

Do you really need more insurance?

I personally carry critical illness insurance so I am a huge proponent.

I’ll tell you a story about a real client, and I can assure you, this is just one of many.

A while back, I met with a friend to talk about insurance coverage. Our conversation led to critical illness insurance.

After discussing the products and companies, he decided that he didn’t need it. What I should have told him was, when you need critical illness insurance – it’s too late. About a year later his wife was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Immediately she was admitted to the hospital for a mastectomy, chemo and radiation therapy.

Not having critical illness insurance can be financially devastating.

As if a grim cancer diagnosis

wasn’t enough stress, the family struggled desperately for money. Now a one income household, her husband took constant sick days caring for her and the kids. Parking at the hospital cost $75.00 per month.

Physiotherapy to counter the shoulder and back pain from the mastectomy added $500 per month. They lost their benefits due to time off work and OHIP didn’t cover most of her medications, adding another $1,000 monthly. Seeking relief from the government, they were told she didn’t qualify for disability and her unemployment eventually ran out. They couldn’t afford the added costs and she was forced to cut her physio and live with the constant pain.

Advice: Separate and go on welfare – Really?

The only advice offered was to separate, apply for welfare, and the government would cover her medication. Uneasy with a fraudulent separation, they wanted the kids to remember a happy, loving family. Her husband came to me after her

diagnoses deciding that now they needed critical illness insurance. Unfortunately, I had to tell him that they didn’t qualify because she was already sick. I felt awful but there was nothing I could do. Through friends and family, a benefit was held and they raised enough money to cover living expenses for two months. It was a help, but not enough.
