Welcome to the Second Bray Park SHS Flip Book for Career Pathways

Principal’s Address

Bray Park State High School has an exemplary Vocational Education and Training (VET) program that provides students a broad range of real-life educational options. Led by an expert team of professionals, Bray Park’s VET team strives to provide each student and family a tailored experience where a student’s passions, career aspirations and wellbeing are paramount in finding the right fit for education and training both within the school and with our partner organisations.

Bray Park boasts a number of exclusive partnerships with Industry and Training organisations which we are able to offer our students. These range from courses preparing students for tertiary entrance, to professional training with on-the-job experience, traineeships, apprenticeships, work experience and taster courses.

Students electing to take on a VET opportunity take with them the highest of expectations of the school as Bray Park representatives. The vast number of partnerships Bray Park holds is in no small part due to our committed students who are wonderful ambassadors of the school in the community. Student dedication to their tailored pathway results in students going beyond the expectations of trainers, employers, and often leads to postschool opportunities confirmed prior to students graduating.

Whether students are unsure about their post-school aspirations or have a clear passion for a particular career, the Bray Park VET program is able to provide information to students and families in helping form an informed, individualised pathway throughout school and beyond. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and speak with one of our team to see what is right for you.

What is VET (Vocational Education & Training) ?

What is a VET course?

Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs team up with industry and government to offer people workplace skills and technical knowledge that can advance their careers and help them prepare for the future. Unlike traditional tertiary programs, VET courses provide students with practical, occupation-based qualifications that lead directly to job opportunities in their field of choice.

To complete a course, you simply enrol through a VET provider. There are no semesters like in a traditional university course; instead, courses are divided into learning modules and assessments, and can be completed any time before your course expiry date.

The VET sector has been an important part of the Australian economy and education system for over a hundred years. Millions of Australians have completed their training and achieved their career ambitions through the VET system. Students want to learn online for the flexibility, educational excellence, lifestyle freedom, and thousands of free educational resources that come along with enrolment in a program.

What to Expect from a VET Course?

Vocational education and training (VET) enable students to acquire workplace skills through nationally recognised training described within an industry-developed training package or an accredited course. The achievement of a VET qualification signifies that a student has demonstrated competency against the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the workplace. VET delivered to secondary students is regulated by the VET sector, and is identical to VET offered in any other context.

VET provides secondary students with a nationally recognised VET qualification or credit towards a nationally recognised qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework. The training that students receive reflects specific industry competency standards and is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). A number of schools across Australia also operate as Registered Training Organisations or deliver VET in partnership with RTO’s.

What qualifications can I get?

While completing your VET education, you may choose to earn a

• Certificate I-IV (career outcome: competent operator or supervisor),

• Diploma (career outcome: para professional),

• Advanced Diploma (career outcome: junior manager).

Once you complete your course, you’ll receive a document certifying that you are an official qualification holder. You’ll also receive an academic transcript and student assessment record, which you can use for future university or job applications as needed. You can always re-enter the VET system and take additional courses to hone your skills or obtain further qualifications in the future.

Are VET courses on campus or online?

You can do both online and on campus. Many providers offer online courses or a combination of online and on-campus courses Even if you live in a rural or remote part of the country, you can still find access to degree programs in your area of interest. Some VET providers even have campuses in rural regions to make it easier for more students to access their services. Imagine studying on your lunch break or commute back home from work. That’s the beauty of online courses offered through the VET system. You can be anywhere, any time and access your course materials while studying at your own pace. Some programs involve a work placement that requires you to be on site at a place of employment, but you’ll need to contact your VET provider to be sure of the details in your region.

Can you undertake VET at school?

As part of your school studies you can undertake VET at school. There is two ways a VET course delivered:

• As part of your school studies - delivered and resourced by a school registered training organisation.

• By enrolling in a qualification with an external registered training organisation - funded either by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training's VET investment budget or through fee-for-service arrangements i.e. where the student or parent pays for the qualification.

• As a school-based apprentice or trainee.

VET In Schools (VETiS) - Frequently Asked Questions

What is VETiS?

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) is a program that enables students to gain nationally recognised qualifications while at school. Students learn skills and knowledge required for specific industries.

VETiS can be undertaken in years 10, 11 and 12, and can count towards the Queensland Certificate of Education. VET can also be undertaken while a young person is still enrolled at school through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT).

How is VETiS funded in Queensland?

In Queensland, VETiS is funded from two main sources:

1. Schools many schools are also registered training organisations (school RTOs) and deliver VETiS training to students. The majority of VETiS training in Queensland is delivered and resourced by schools’ RTOs.

2. Training (VET investment budget) provides funding to any RTO that is approved by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training as a Skills Assured Supplier (SAS).

Students at school have access to 1 (One) VETiS in School course provided by an external RTO and 1 (One) Traineeship or Apprenticeship at school.

Can students undertake any VETiS qualification?

• Students undertaking VETiS, which is funded and delivered by a school RTO or self-funded, can undertake any qualification across a range of industries. This includes certificate III or higher-level qualifications. Choosing the right course should match the career path you wish to take.

• Students undertaking VETiS, which is funded by the VET investment budget, can choose from a range of certificate I and II level qualifications, referred to as employment stream qualifications.

• These qualifications have been identified in consultation with industry as leading to employment outcomes and are based on skills shortages and Queensland Government priorities. Subsidised VETiS qualifications can be found on the Priority Skills List

Students undertaking VETiS, funded by the VET investment budget, can complete one employment stream qualification at the certificate I or II level.

Can school leavers access subsidised training if they have done VETiS?

The Queensland Government is committed to providing young people with the skills they need to successfully transition from school to work.

Students who complete a VETiS qualification at school, even at the certificate III level or higher, are still eligible to access further Queensland Government subsidised training post-school, such as free TAFE for Year 12 graduates and Certificate 3 Guarantee. Learn more about subsidised training opportunities for learners

Source: Department of Employment, Small Business and Training

Who pays any co-contribution fees (or shortfalls)?

VETiS funded by the VET investment budget is fee-free for students. Subsidies paid to RTO’s for VETiS delivery are detailed in the Priority Skills List.

The maximum subsidy for VETiS students will be paid in most circumstances. The subsidy for each VETiS qualification should cover the costs associated with participating in the training. In some instances, however, there may be a shortfall between the subsidy level and the fees charged by the PQS. This is known as the co-contribution fee. An RTO must disclose any fees upfront and clearly publish them on their website. This allows schools and students to be informed of all training costs and able to compare co-contribution fees across different RTO’s.

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN AS AN APPRENTICE OR TRAINEE

Difference between an apprentice and a trainee

Apprentices are trained in a skilled trade (e.g. electrical, plumbing, cabinet-making, automotive) and, upon successful completion, become a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeships generally take up to 4 years to complete.

Trainees are trained in vocational areas (e.g. business administration, information technology, tourism) and, upon successful completion, receive a qualification in their chosen vocational area. Traineeships generally take between 12 months and 3 years to complete.

Quick facts about apprenticeships and traineeships

• Apprenticeships and traineeships combine work with structured training.

• Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time, part-time, or school-based - where some training is undertaken while the apprentice or trainee is in high school. However, apprenticeships and traineeships cannot be completed on a casual basis.

• Existing employees may undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship.

• Apprenticeships and traineeships require employers to enter into a training contract with the apprentice or trainee, which is a legally binding agreement to work and train together for a length of time.

• Employers work with a training organisation and the apprentice or trainee to negotiate a training plan

• Training options must be negotiated and outlined in the training plan. Aspects of training that are open to negotiation (subject to training package requirements) include selection, content and sequencing of (elective) competency units; timing, location and mode of delivery; and trainer or facilitator.

Types of apprenticeships and traineeships

Full-time or part-time

• Full-time apprentices and trainees work and train an average (minimum) of 38 hours per week and have ongoing employment

• Part-time apprentices and trainees are rostered to work on a regular basis, working and training no less than 15 hours per week, averaged over a 4-week cycle.

• Existing workers may be employed as an apprentice or trainee in a full-time or part-time capacity.

• The nominal term of a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship is generally double that of the full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.

School-based

• School-based apprentices and trainees undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship as part of their high school studies (generally in years 10, 11 and 12).

• A school-based apprentice or trainee's employment and/or training arrangements must impact on their school timetable for the program to be considered school-based.

• The nominal term of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship is generally double that of the full-time apprenticeship or traineeship

Interested in becoming a Dental Assistant?

Want to become a qualified Dental Assistant before leaving school?

Maybe a school based Dental Assisting traineeship is the right opportunity for you! Did you know …? In the first quarter of 2021 (to February) Dental Assistants were the 6th most sought after occupation across Queensland in the Health and Social Assistance sector. Dental Assistants are also ranked in the top 10 occupations in demand as part of Queensland’s post COVID recovery. As an unregulated health industry, more and more Dental practices are insisting on Dental Assistants being qualified before hiring.

There has never been a better time to invest in a future career in the Dental Industry, becoming qualified before completing school will vastly improve employment opportunities for student’s post-school. As a result, more and more Dental Practices are seeing the benefit of hiring school-based trainees.

What is a school-based Dental Assisting traineeship and what is involved?

School-based traineeships allow high school students, generally in Years 11 or 12, to work for an employer and train towards a recognised qualification, while completing their secondary schooling and studying for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and/or Australian Territory Admission Rant (ATAR)

The commitment … school-based trainees must complete a minimum of 7.5 hours PAID employment per week; trainees usually take one day per week off school to attend the workplace. Trainees have a requirement to complete 375 hours over the course of 12 months. (To achieve this, it is recommended you work 2-3 days a week during the school holidays) Working in a dental practice usually requires long days on your feet, sometimes up to 9 hours!

On top of school commitments and one day per week working in a Dental Practice, trainees must also complete their HLT35021 Certificate III in Dental Assisting. This qualification has 10 units of theoretical competency including a training record book to be completed in the Dental Practice as part of the practical component of the traineeship.

School-based traineeships require a lot of commitment given the amount of study that is involved, and the high-level competency required within the workplace…

AADA College strongly urges students to discuss becoming a Dental Assistant with their school and parents before approaching Dental Practices for a potential opportunity to join their team.

Why choose AADA College as your registered training provider (RTO)?

 Practical, dental practice-based learning

 Rolling enrolment intakes

 Study from home with support of industry experienced trainers

 Approved Skill Assure supplier (SAS) for traineeships.

City Beach’s School-Based Traineeships provide students an opportunity to work in a fun, fast-paced environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification – a Certificate III in Business. Each City Beach SBT is assigned a nationally accredited trainer from a Registered Training Organisation who delivers their training and supports them in obtaining their qualification.

THE WORLD NEEDS MORE ENGINEERS!!!

The Faculty of Engineering at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) works closely with engineering organisations to understand the skills needed that underpin a successful career in engineering. We have also learnt that the world will need more engineers to tackle problems such as climate change, food shortages, and sustainable environments. Here at QUT, the Faulty of Engineering has developed a series of programs and experiences that encourage and empower students to consider a career in engineering, while still in high school.

Power of Engineering – Supporting and inspiring young women in high school to explore the world of engineering, QUT partners with organisations all over Southeast Queensland to deliver the Power of Engineering. We originally offered this opportunity to years 7-9 to align with the critical decision-making time frame while in high school and to empower young women to consider the various career pathways connected to engineering. We now offer the program for female student’s years 7-12 once per term.

START QUT - START QUT is an opportunity for high-achieving Queensland and northern NSW year 11 and 12 students to experience university and extend their studies. High School students’ study one or two university subjects (units) in the same classes as current QUT students and are awarded a scholarship to cover the cost of their tuition fees. All START QUT units can be studied on-campus and a number can be studied online. Applications close May 31st, 2023.

Student Clubs – Our Engineering student clubs are amongst some of the most knowledgeable students in Australia. Their project and social based activities allow students to practice the skills they are learning at university, while creating a sense of belonging to the university and their peers. Our student clubs compete in national and international competition and showcases and have partnerships with companies like Boeing and BMW.

QUT College Diploma in Engineering – Students may not be interested in a university degree but still have the passion for furthering their studies post high school. The Diploma in Engineering draws on units from QUT's Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, introducing you to foundational engineering concepts, knowledge, and technical skills. Our diploma also has a strong focus on helping you develop skills you need in the engineering field.

Engineering & Design workshops - We collaborate with schools to provide a range of workshops, events and learning experiences in Engineering, Design, and broader STEM disciplines. These programs aim to help schools and students understand the importance and opportunities of STEM skills, and to inspire the next generation of leaders. Experiences are available for Year 7 to 12 students regardless of background, gender, academic level, or location, and can be accessed on-campus, in school classrooms, and virtually.

For more information about how to engage with the Faulty of Engineering and learn more about the programs and opportunities we have on offer please contact Keith Alexander, Student Engagement Coordinator Faculty of Engineering at 07 313 4784 or via email at engage.engineering@qut.edu.au or scan the QR code:

With more than 3000 people and 2400 volunteers across approximately 90 services, WMQ has a broad range of employment and career development opportunities across the large region it operates in.

WMQ offers Year 11 students the opportunity to participate in a School-based Traineeship program to gain experience and skills within the Health and Community Services industry and a nationally recognised qualification.

From Term 1 January 2024 - June 2024, WMQ is partnering with Registered Training Organisation

From Term 3 July 2024 - June 2025, the trainees will undertake a 12 month paid traineeship and complete the HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance qualification, learning on the job and integrating course theory into practice across a variety of WMQ locations.

WMQ provides an immersive upskilling program in both Residential and Community Aged Care sectors and opportunities for students to begin their Aged Care career pathway or establish an employment foundation to higher learning education.

School-based Trainees will;
