Miami’s best artists find a way to mix a little bit of everything. Take the Spam All-Stars, for example.

Founder of Sweat Records, Lauren Reskin, waxes poetic about Miami’s music scene.

As founder of Little Haiti’s Sweat Records, Lauren Reskin provides an expansive library of music to Miami’s fingertips. She brings the music to life with beloved live events and dance parties, and that’s just scratching the surface.

Consultant at Imagesound Americas, a boutique firm in Wynwood that does music for some really fantastic local and international businesses. What we do there is create truly custom soundtracks, working track-by-track if need be.

You put on the successful ‘80s Prom annual event. What other area events have you worked on that you are proud of?

Every year on the third Saturday in April we throw Sweatstock, which is a free community block party and music festival. It celebrates the huge international Record Store Day event as well as the store’s anniversary. It’s an amazing time where you can see 20-plus local artists across two or three stages, plus food trucks, giveaways and all sorts of fun extras. It’s also been really fulfilling to bring down artists for shows in South Florida.

How would you describe Miami’s music scene to an outsider? What are its strengths? Are there misconceptions you’d like to dispel? What and/ or who makes Miami’s scene unique and worthy of attention?

Miami’s scene is vibrant but ever-changing. We gain and lose venues, bands, labels and promoters on a regular basis—it’s a constant flow. That said, there are always a ton of exciting shows, events, art happenings and randomness going on.

Random is a great word for our scene.

The misconceptions I’d like to dispel is that every place has a velvet rope, every place only plays EDM or reggaeton, and that’s the superficial scene that gets portrayed the most in the media.

There is so much more, you just need to search it out a little bit. Another great thing about the scene here is that there are a ton of fantastic cultural organizations bringing some amazing shows and content here, like New World Symphony, the Rhythm Foundation, MDC Live Arts, III Points, YoungArts and many more.

We heard you sometimes curate playlists for local hotspots. How and when did that first come about? Where can we hear some of them, and what special challenges does such a job present or offer to you?

I’ve been making mixes and playlists as far back as I can remember. When the Freehand/ Broken Shaker was first opening, I helped curate their music and that led to me becoming Lead

PLAYING ON BYRON HOFFMAN BRINGS HIS BAGPIPE EXPERTISE TO MIA. Senior Aviation Property Manager Byron Hoffman has worked at Miami International Airport since he was 23. But even when he’s not on the clock, he makes the time to volunteer at airport events—and brings his bagpipe along for the ride.

Did You Know?

Bagpipes are frequently used during funerals and memorials, especially among fire department, military and police forces in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Commonwealth realms, and the U.S.

How did you get started playing the bagpipe?

I started as a young child. It’s kind of a family tradition. My grandparents were from Scotland and I got started around age 6. I’ve been playing about 45 years.

How do your bagpipe skills come in handy at MIA? From time to time, there are

occasions out here at the airport where they ask me to play. I do it as a service for 9/11 events or Wounded Warriors, mostly service events for people in uniform who are being honored here at the airport.

What does it mean to you to use your talent to honor those men and women?

It’s something I like to do to give back, for people who give their time for a cause. I recently played at an awards ceremony for the TSA, to recognize their employees for excellent service. I like to give back, because I know what it’s like for people who dedicate their lives to public service.

How did your locally owned, independent bookstore expand from one location in Miami?

With the support of an incredible staff and the notion that we could bring our brand of bookselling to many underserved communities.

Right now we have four locations that we own and three that we have an affiliate relationship with. The ones we own are in Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and the [Adrienne] Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Our affiliated stores are in the Cayman Islands, the airport and Westhampton Beach, NY. You have multiple locations that each cater to the needs of locals. What did you take into account before selecting a unique collection for each store?

We never underestimate the readership in Miami; South Floridians have eclectic but sophisticated tastes in books. We bring our “special sauce” to each store in the form of

books on the arts, architecture, photography, fashion and design. We also present a wonderful selection of literary fiction, poetry and good nonfiction.

How did the Reading Sessions begin? How did you team up with entities like Miami Dade College and Tate’s Comics?

We always look for strategic partnerships.

Miami Dade College and Books & Books have been collaborating for over 30 years and our relationship only grows stronger; our mission is to partner very deeply and all throughout the community and that’s how we connected with Tate’s.

Who are you reading at the moment?

Poetry by Gerald Stern, Pablo Neruda and Clive James’ essays that appear in Poetry magazine.

I have a number of galleys of forthcoming books I’m about to dive into.

Let’s Mobilize Pop-up library Bookleggers creates a literary community in Miami.

Based out of Miami, Bookleggers is a mobile pop-up library founded by Nathaniel Sandler. Sandler has had his share of adventures over the past three years with Bookleggers. Just last year he had a month-long residency in the Everlglades (via Artist-in-Residencein-Everglades [AIRIE]), where he wrote nonfiction stories based on his surroundings, while simultaneously running Bookleggers on location.

The library pops up once a month in local bars, parks and venues around the city to give free books to the community. Attendees are allotted one free book to take home and read

at their leisure. You can even trade in your books from home for one belonging to Bookleggers. “A book for a book,” as its site reads.

If you forget to bring back that book that you checked out, you can still buy a book at one of the library’s events for just $2. The goal of Bookleggers is to create a literary community. The organization has traded thousands of books with thousands of people and continues to grow.

The best part? Each event has a theme (with books to match), that ranges from barbecue and art to dogs and poetry.

with so many products being made in different markets in order to lengthen their shelf life, the products are coming from other locations, which is not necessarily as flavorful as they should be, since they are not in season.

Why do you think an airport needs farm-to-table dining options?

I think it is a response to the changing trends and demands of the passengers.

Over time, passengers have become smarter and more conscientious about what they are eating and what ingredients are in each of the products that they are consuming. They are also becoming a lot more conscientious about the environment, and supporting and sustaining the local community and its businesses.

Are you planning on bringing this farm-to-table movement to any other restaurants at the airport?

Absolutely. We opened our second location at MIA called Mediterranean Kitchen (near Gate D-28) and it follows the same exact farm-to-table principles. Everything is locally sourced from Redland and it features a lot of what they now call plantbased proteins and foods.

What is the process like for sourcing produce for the restaurant?

We work with purveyors who supply us.

The majority of them are local and we try to stick to the seasons. All products have seasonality, which is why they are available in a specific flavor and texture. Nowadays,

Our cakes, for example, are all baked in-house and we only use the freshest ingredients. We don’t use any preservatives or additives. Sure, they have a short shelf life because of this, but our niche is specifically to make them all by hand. These are all little jewels and they are beautiful in their imperfection,

because they are actually made by somebody rather than by a machine.

For the traveler who is in a rush, what’s the best grab-and-go option at Icebox Café?

For someone who wants to go after a sandwich, we have an all-vegetarian wrap, which has hummus and seasoned sautéed tofu and vegetables. But if you do want to go for something a little more decadent, we do have a forest ham with spicy grainy mustard and cheese sandwich as well. We also have our very popular curry chicken, which is an all-natural organic chicken breast with our curry sauce and is served with roasted vegetables sourced from local farms and rice. Again, the recurring theme for us is that everything we do we go the extra mile and make sure that it’s not only naturally sourced, but that it’s also natural.

Do you plan on working together with the airport on any other future projects?

The only thing I can say is that we’re talking about possibly looking at farmland to develop for the airport. How cool would that be?

GOING GREEN At MIA, World Environment Day is celebrated year round.

This summer, FPL Services began The Sustainability Project at MIA—a massive installation of energy-efficient lighting, water conservation retrofits, air conditioning and ventilation upgrades. The utility savings are the equivalent of the annual carbon emissions of 5,110 automobiles and 28 million gallons of water—or 43 Olympic-size swimming pools.

“The new energy conservation program at MIA is the latest, and one of the greatest, projects to date that the County has undertaken to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint within South Florida,” says Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “The cost savings and energy conservation will also be huge benefits to our airport, its tenants and passengers, and the environment as a whole.”

The contract, approved by the Miami-Dade County Commission in December, requires FPL Services to install $32 million worth of energy conservation measures throughout the seven-million-square-foot terminal within two years and guarantees that the

airport will achieve more than $40 million in savings over the 14 years from implementation, making the contract budget neutral. Third-party financing will fund the contract cost, capitalized interest during construction of the project, and financing costs, for an amount not to exceed $34 million. Installation began in June.

“As one of the largest energy consumers in Miami-Dade County, we are pursuing conservation measures like The Sustainability Project to be its most efficient consumer as well,” says Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “In addition to protecting our environment, being an energysmart airport is smart business as well. The $40 million in savings will help us to better manage our operating costs that are passed on to current and prospective airlines, which in turn supports our traffic growth.”

The MIA and FPLS energy conservation partnership is benefitting the community, too. The project has helped create some 300 jobs for the local community.

Airport Ambassador Christine Keller loves to help people. In fact, it’s one of her favorite things about volunteering for MIA. She loves talking to visitors, has a diverse background, and she’s probably one of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

What was it like when you first began volunteering at MIA? When you first start out as a volunteer, they make you do a scavenger hunt. You go all around the airport with a list, and you have to find where everything is. It’s designed to teach you where the places are. So if someone asks you where anything is, you can tell them because you’ve actually been to each location already.

What questions do people usually approach you with?

“I have six hours before my next flight. What can I do?

Where can I rent a car?” Since I work in arrivals, most of my questions are similar to that.

Where are you from?

I’m from Venezuela, but both of my parents were German.

We grew up speaking German in Venezuela. In school we spoke German, but on the street, we spoke Spanish. In 1979, we came to the U.S. to learn English for a year. Let me tell you, it’s been a really long year. [Laughs.]

What do you enjoy most about the job?

Smiling and welcoming someone to Miami. You know, I volunteer a lot, and this is probably the place that makes you feel appreciated the most. They’re so happy to see you when you’re there.

That definitely makes things a lot easier.

It’s just a friendly, wonderful group of people, so you really enjoy being there. That’s why it’s easy to smile and make the passengers welcome. And you know, I think that’s really our goal—to make the passengers’ trip a little less stressful. If I can do that, I’m happy.

The project, named The Underline, utilized the local talent of the University of Miami’s architecture students to illustrate the dramatic changes that could invigorate the area. Soon, James Corner Field Operations was on board, the same team that designed New York City’s High Line. But the Miami project is exponentially larger in scope. “The High Line is two miles,” Daly says. “And nationwide, we’ll be the only one directly connected to transit. That’s a big deal for Miami.”

1. Sailfish: With a sail-like dorsal fin, a bill and lots of leaps, these guys are the drama kings of offshore fishing. Best fishing occurs from December to early April.

2. Grouper: Tough to pull off the bottom, grouper are wonderful on the table. You can catch and release them all year, but keeping them for dinner runs May through November.

3. Snook: Local anglers grow obsessed with these tough-to-trick fish. It’s legal to catch them all year, but illegal to kill them from June through August, and December 15 to February 1.

4. Tarpon: These primitive beasts hit hard, and have such violent jumps and boney mouths that they are extremely difficult to land. Most anglers release them to fight another day.

If you find yourself at Gate D-50, look up. You’ll see constellations of shiny objects practically twinkling at you from above. But this isn’t a starry sky. These circular designs are replicas of Florida fish, hanging in spiral patterns on the wall like they just jumped out of an Esther Williams number.

This is Got Any Jacks? a work of art by Donald Lipski, an American sculptor known for his large-scale public art installations. The piece pays tribute to Florida’s robust ocean life. Lipski paired with renowned Florida taxidermist Michael Kirkhart to create the fiberglass fish, then assembled them in

star-like patterns to catch the eye of passengers traveling below.

Sailfish, sharks and more than a dozen different colorful fish species decorate the walls. The nearly 100 sculptures are at once fish and abstract shapes that represent constellations. With the biggest fish measuring 14 feet across, it’s hard to miss it!

First, says TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz, make sure to pack anything that could be mistaken for a weapon in your checked luggage. “You may not bring real weapons, replica weapons or toy weapons through the checkpoint,” she warns. “So place any

swords, guns, knives—real or fake—in your checked bags.”

And you might want to re-think your G.I. Joe costume: “Hand grenades, real or replica, however, are not allowed on the plane in carry-on or checked bags,” Koshetz advises.

If you or your child will be wearing a costume with a mask, TSA will require its removal to pass through security.

Be sure to prepare any young children, so they know they’ll have to remove anything covering their faces.

And finally, Koshetz advises, “some costumes with a lot of metal will alarm the TSA screening equipment, so best to put them on after the checkpoint.”

MIA’s Children’s Gallery showcases the work of South Florida’s youngest artists.

The Miami International Airport’s art collection is made up of a vast selection of world-class pieces, ranging from painting, photography, sculpture and more from artists from across the world. But when the airport first launched its art exhibition program, its stars were the children of Miami.

Established in the late 1990s, the Children’s Gallery that connects concourses D and E exhibits the work of students in grades kindergarten through 12 as part of a partnership between the airport and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. “The work they

produce is amazing,” says Dr. Yolanda Sanchez, director of MIA’s Fine Arts & Cultural Affairs. “Miami-Dade County has an award-winning art education program.”

For each exhibit, the schools and airport together select a theme to inspire the students. The budding artists then put their own spin on the subject in artistic form—and often gain knowledge in other subject areas in the process.

“When we did our sunflower show, the students looked at artists that had painted sunflowers,” Sanchez recalls.

“But they also studied units that had to

do with science, and how sunflowers are used for fuel and food.”

It’s that combination of art and learning that continues to drive MIA’s original exhibition space. “The ultimate mission is to give these budding artists the opportunity to showcase their work, and for our traveling audiences to enjoy it,” Sanchez says. “Children’s work is so pure. That’s part of the enjoyment.”

Elaine Riedinger, an active member of MIA’s popular customer service-focused volunteer program, was recently named the airport’s Volunteer Ambassador of the Year. Though she remains humble, Riedinger is full of valuable knowledge that many travelers tap into on a regular basis.

How did you begin volunteering at MIA? I saw an ad and thought, “That’s something I would be interested in.” It’s been six years now!

What was it like being recently named the Volunteer Ambassador of the Year?

I was totally shocked. You know, you try to do your best. You’re an ambassador so you’re there to smile and help people with their problems. They just got off the plane, they’re looking for baggage claim, the baby is crying and you just want to help them. [At the

awards ceremony] I began to wonder, because my husband was there. I thought it was going to be a roast, like, ‘Let’s Roast Laynee Night.’

And you used to carry around a binder full of information that could answer virtually any question possible ....

I had papers and maps and things so that I had information to help people, which I added to the binder they gave us when we started. Over the years, I carried that binder. It eventually got so large that I couldn’t carry it with me. I kept adding different pieces of information, so eventually I had to get a miniature suitcase with wheels. In some ways I miss it. I might bring it back.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love the people I work with. It’s a wonderful family.

Let’s Get Social MIA’s award-winning social media strategies keep travelers informed.

You might not associate airports with the terms “hip” or “cool.”

But airports across the world are stepping up their game to entertain and inform travelers, and Miami International Airport is leading the way.

Mashable’s list of “the best and worst airports in the U.S., according to Twitter” compared the percentage of positive tweets about each airport and ranked MIA in third place. A quick look at MIA’s official Twitter account reveals that their team is focused on providing timely airport information to passengers, but also maintains a sense of humor and cultural awareness.

For example, on May 4, the official Star Wars Day, MIA coyly listed Tatooine as a destination,

That’s right–MIA celebrated “May the 4th Be With You.” They definitely know how to have a little fun, like when they plugged their Jose Cuervo restaurant on Cinco De Mayo, adding “get some meat on those bones!” It was accompanied by a picture of two calaveras, which are Dia de los Muertos-style skeletons.

But in addition to the humorous side of their social media, the airport posts updates on new destinations and nonstop flights, as well as any other information that flyers might need. New restaurants and bars also frequently get shout-outs. MIA even posted some spectacular shots of Air Force One on its most recent visit to Miami.

Creating the perfect blend of humor and information is not an easy feat, yet MIA does it with ease.
