K, so we had some fun putting together The Summer Issue.

A lot of fun. Of course, when it came down to the hard work, we did all of our usual vetting and fact-checking and revising.

But along the way, we test-drove a Lamborghini; we had a mayor serenade us with God Bless America; we rode around Biscayne Bay on a yacht while photographing model Naomi Grace, the picture-perfect Miami native who graces our cover; and we tossed around Father’s Day advice with baseball icon Jeff Conine. While we relished those moments, we did our best to capture them for you, to share them with you — to show you something unique about Miami and the people who live here, as we strive to do in every issue.

While she was working on our main Father’s Day feature, writer Lauren Comander sent me a Charles Wadsworth quote: “By the time a man realizes that his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” That stuck with me, because several of our subjects speak to the theme of parental reverence.

Evan S. Benn Neil Shah, our Rainmaker (p. 41) who recently moved his family from Editor in Chief Philadelphia to Coconut Grove, gave writer Nicole Martinez a thorough, thoughtful interview about his life and career. And then he emailed, saying he felt like he’d left something out; he went on to write about the people he most admires: Mom and Dad. Real estate ace Peggy Fucci (p. 48) holds onto fond memories of her father, despite his death at the hands of a terrorist attack when she was just 13.

Losing him, she said, forced her to grow stronger, more independent and driven to succeed. And Jorge Gonzalez, CEO of City National Bank and one of our All-Star Dads (p. 90), draws the closest parallel to Wadsworth when he catches himself turning off the lights that his 11-year-old twins have left on. “That’s what my Dad used to give me a hard time about,” Gonzalez says. “The electricity isn’t free!”

To balance out our focus on fathers, I turned to contributing style editor Claudia Miyar, asking her to help conceptualize a summer swimwear feature that was both tasteful and on-trend. We landed on one-pieces as the suits to highlight — it is the year of the maillot — then partnered with Belzona Marine for the ride and with Tiffany & Co., which showered us in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of diamonds for the photo shoot.

Bringing Naomi on board was the easiest decision we made: She has exactly the kind of approachable yet cultivated look we wanted. And putting her in front of photographer Felipe Cuevas’ lens — with a few tricks from hair and makeup extraordinaire Rory Lee — made for a deliriously fun day at sea that resulted in our Sailing into Summer spread (p. 98) and INDULGE’s first swimsuit cover.

warm summer “hello” to all of our readers! As I begin my journey as publisher of INDULGE, I’m so proud — and very excited — to introduce you to our summer edition. Prior to joining the Miami Herald Media Co. this year, I’d often enjoy the latest issue of INDULGE at Crema Espresso Bar on Miracle Mile, following my morning yoga class at nearby Prana Yoga. A creamy latte, a beautifully curated magazine and some “me” time — how very indulgent! Little did I know then that I’d one day be a part of such a magnificent publication dedicated to capturing, with great care, the uniqueness that is South Florida.

In every issue of INDULGE, you’re certain to discover untold stories about some of the most interesting people in our community, tasty dishes at decadent restaurants you can’t wait to explore, and fabulous shopping at fashionable destinations. This issue, however, Lesley DeCanio speaks to me in very personal ways.

For one, I love the heartwarming stories where we celebrate fathers.

My father, or Papi, turned 80 this year. He is my role model and the reason we call Miami home, since immigrating here with our family from Cuba in the early ’70s. He’s confident and smart, always hardworking and funny. My Papi is always ready to share a joke in Spanish, which he then translates to English and tells again, expecting you to laugh just as hard the second time you’ve heard it, even if it didn’t translate as well. That’s my Papi.

This is a special issue, where we say hello again to summer as if it’s never left. And if you relish some seasonal downtime, you don’t want to miss this month’s Staycation column on finding luxury in the Florida Keys (p. 66). To me, the Keys are our family’s second home, not because we actually own one (not yet, anyway!), but because we take advantage of every diverse option offered, from B&Bs on Duval Street to a recent weekend’s Full Moon events at Amara Cay Resort in Islamorada. I can even feel like a professional photographer by capturing an Instagram-worthy image of a one-of-a-kind sunset right from my dinner table at Latitudes in Key West.

Speaking of sunsets, I love the magical moment captured on our cover. This one image evokes a feeling of zen, capturing an instant where I can sense the breeze and the warmth of the sun, and linger on the brilliant colors as they slip away. I almost feel as if I turn the page, the sun will set and I will miss it.

Finally, the Neighborhood feature exploring South Miami (p. 64) … well, it’s where I live, so it’s like sharing a piece of me with you, our readers. So whether you’re going through these pages from the comfort of your couch or somewhere sipping a latte after yoga, I hope you enjoy every minute of it — all summer long!

Amanda Mesa is a veteran of Miami’s restaurant and bar scene. As nightlife editor of miami.com, Amanda’s Sip & Savor column runs weekly in the Miami Herald, chronicling her forays into local cocktails, food, music and more. For her INDULGE debut, Amanda delved into the world of sake — a spirit that first piqued her taste buds during a trip to Japan several years ago, when she discovered its range, complexities and history.

One of Miami’s top portrait photographers, Nick Garcia has cemented himself as a master of capturing the intuitive, sensitive and provocative.

Besides shooting this issue’s Rainmaker (p.

41) and Father’s Day feature (p. 90), Nick also photographed the brothers who operate El Dorado Furniture (p. 52), which this month celebrates its 50th anniversary. “I was able to relate to the El Dorado story of how their father came to this country and started a business that his sons and grandsons were able to follow,” Nick says. “That reminded me of how my father, also being a photographer, inspired me, my brother, my cousin and my brotherin-law to be photographers and follow his legacy.”

A freelance writer living in Hollywood, Jana Soeldner Danger contributes regularly to the Miami Herald and several magazines. She covers real estate, interior design, business, food, travel, society and profiles, like the one she did for this issue on Peggy Fucci (p. 48). Jana says she enjoys profile-writing because it offers an opportunity to tell personal stories in ways that allow others to truly get to know the subjects. “Peggy is inspirational because more than once she behaved fearlessly in the face of daunting events and circumstances. She is an example for all women seeking to achieve individual success.”

Contributing Design Director John Michael Coto’s meticulously dynamic style has shaped INDULGE’s pages since 2015. He has made it his life’s work to communicate his passions through images, having honed his craft as an art director for national and international titles for more than 15 years. In this issue, the story of El Dorado’s Capó family (p. 52) — “about the legacy of love, respect and traditions that bind them together” — struck a chord. As the son of exiled parents, Mike says the words and photography spoke to him. “We are immigrants who have assimilated the values, customs, business acumen and professionalism of this great nation without losing our love of family, culture or origins.”

INDULGE Contributing Style Editor Claudia Miyar envisioned a fashion story for the Summer issue that was inspired by being outside, on the water (p. 98). “The hot months call for fewer clothes and accessories, so what you do wear has to be really special,” Claudia says. “I always gravitate to cleaner looks, so I liked the juxtaposition of sporty one-pieces paired with insane jewelry.” Claudia worked with Tiffany & Co. to source jewelry that represented the kind of mod-American glamour that felt right with the swimwear she chose. “Naomi Grace, our model, really brought it all together. She lives a super-healthy lifestyle, and it shows: She is a stylist’s dream.”

After spending a decade as a staff correspondent for People, Lauren Comander now freelances for various publications on everything from travel to celebrities and businesses.

She returned to her local roots for this issue of INDULGE, profiling an impressive crew of prominent Miami dads (p. 90). “My interview with Jeff Conine brought back childhood memories of root-root-rooting for him at the ballpark.” By the end of her reporting for this Father's Day feature, Lauren was feeling the love — and pressure. “It definitely made me want to find a unique way to honor my father, as well as my better half.”

t Brothers & Brawlers, everything you see is available for purchase. Sure, the snapback hats from menswear brand Brooklyn Circus and the leather-wrapped flasks from Slightly Alabama are for sale. But so are the vintage café racer motorcycles perched atop industrial tabletops. Even the floorto-ceiling interior windows (salvaged from a 1920s Chicago factory) and the mid-century modern armchairs (reimagined by Miami designer Steve Harivel) are up for grabs.

“Everything is intentional here,” said Sebastian Tatano-Ramirez, the founder and creative director of Brothers & Brawlers.

His masculine Wynwood store is part clothing showroom, part eyeglass boutique, part coffee shop. Being unable to pigeonhole Brothers & Brawlers into a single category is exactly what makes it special: It’s a refreshingly stimulating collection of fine objects and good taste.

‘SHADES ARE FOREVER’ Brothers & Brawlers is the flagship of DiRocco Eyewear, a line of Italian-made spectacles that Tatano-Ramirez spent half a decade bringing to fruition.

While acting as creative director for menswear brand Alexander Nash in New York, Tatano-Ramirez tapped into his engineering background and sought to create eyewear with carbon-fiber frames. He christened the brand with his wife’s maiden name, and DiRocco only produces about 500 pairs of each style per year.

“Sunglasses are even more inclusive than suits,” he said. “Young, old, male, female. Whatever style you have — young, suiting, casual — everyone goes back to sunglasses. It’s the common denominator. I always say polka dots go in and out, but shades are forever.”

SPEND ALL DAY Brothers & Brawlers is divided into different areas, with names like Life Unscripted (retail), Club Harivel (coffee lounge) and Brawler’s Row (bespoke tailoring).

In Life Unscripted, New York-based labels intermingle with made-inMiami products, emphasizing Tatano-Ramirez’s inclusivity. You could spend all day sipping on Joel Lees — a caffeinated twist on a Dark and Stormy — at the coffee bar, which brews beans from Brooklyn’s Eastlick Coffee and Miami’s own Panther. When hunger calls, step outside to pick up some elevated pub food at the British Garden food truck, parked out front.

While each section of the store offers a glimpse into Tatano-Ramirez’s imagination, it’s Brawler’s Row that zeroes in on what first prompted his pursuit of a curated lifestyle: a custom-fit suit. When asked what he would save first if the store were ever to go up in flames, Tatano-Ramirez said he’d leave the DiRoccos (the carbon fiber would withstand fire) as well as the classic Yamaha XS750 bike that he loves.

“If a fire starts, I would run to Brawler’s Row, and I would grab my master pattern from the wall,” he said. “If I save one chair, I’m sacrificing another chair. As beautiful as they are, they’re all just things at the end of the day.

But that pattern is something I created, and I don’t want to lose it.”

VITALS 43. President and Chief Operating Officer of Hersha Hospitality Trust, a hotel operator and real estate investment firm that manages more than $2.5 billion in assets. Neil H. Shah was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the younger sibling and future business partner of his brother, Jay. His parents, Hasu and Hersha, immigrated to Central Pennsylvania from Mumbai.

While Hasu took a chemical engineering job with the state, Hersha raised their two sons and, in her spare time, bought and fixed up small real estate investments. The Shahs eventually purchased the Red Rose Motel, moving their family into the 24-room property. Using the matriarch’s name, The Hersha Group went on to acquire or build another 10 properties. Neil Shah, meanwhile, earned degrees from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and from Harvard Business School. In 1999, he and his brother took the family business to new heights — and took it public — with Hersha Hospitality Trust. Hersha has clusters of hotels in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Washington and select West Coast markets. South Florida came across their radar in 2011, with the company buying real estate in Miami Beach, Key West and, later, Coconut Grove. Drawn to the warm weather and warmer community, Shah moved his family — his wife of 13 years, Juhi Saigal-Shah, whom he met on a trip to Mumbai, and their two kids, Simran, 10, and Arhan, 8 — to Coconut Grove last year. The timing was perfect: Hersha Hospitality Trust has since acquired The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove and announced plans to build a new hotel at Merrick Park in Coral Gables.

“Miami Gardens is my hometown,” said Gilbert, 44, who was elected mayor in 2012 after serving four years as a City Council member. “It’s the only home I’ve ever really known. I’m connected to the city.”

Gilbert grew up here, being raised by parents who were active in church life. “Church was the family business — not politics,”

he said. On Sundays when the Dolphins were in town, Gilbert would park cars on his grandparents’ lawn, in the shadows of the old Joe Robbie Stadium.

He graduated from Miami Norland Senior High and then from Florida A&M University.

He returned home after college to earn a law degree from the University of Miami.

INFLUENTIAL MENTOR Running for office was never really part of Gilbert’s plan, until he met Janet Reno, who tapped him to work on her Florida gubernatorial campaign in 2002. Her loss in the Democratic primary almost spelled the end of Gilbert’s foray into politics.

“I was completely disillusioned with politics,” he said. “Janet was brilliant.

I couldn’t believe she didn’t win.”

the movers The next year, however, Miami Gardens — previously an unincorporated part of Miami-Dade County — became a city. Reno encouraged her young protégé to seek elected office.

“Janet was the one who told me to run,” Gilbert said. “If she had said, ‘You shouldn’t run,’ I would never have been in public office.”

Looking back at his run so far, Gilbert proudly points to a 2015 municipal bond that’s poised to bring a sports complex, culinary arts facility, and a science and technology center to the city.

“Typically, we react to issues instead of planning for the future,” he said. “I want to change that.”

He also cites the city’s popular Jazz in the Gardens festival — which this year expanded to include a film, music, arts and culture conference — as an example of positive things happening in his hometown.

“I want to show the community that you can laugh and be serious, that you can love hip-hop and the fine arts,” Gilbert said.

CREATING A LEGACY He’s trying to instill the same cultural acceptance in his 9-year-old son, Oliver IV. The two plan to hit some water parks this summer, and Oliver IV will probably twist his dad’s arm to get him into the kitchen.

“He’s the only one who can get me to cook,” Gilbert said.

“His favorite is my collard greens and my extra-special mac ’n’ cheese with six types of cheese.”

Children are an important part of Gilbert’s vision for Miami Gardens and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

“This may sound strange,” he said, “but I don’t want to be remembered. I just want to know that kids had an opportunity that they wouldn’t have had, because I made an argument on their behalf.”

Peggy Fucci Enduring major losses as a teenager helped the President and CEO of OneWorld Properties find the independence and strength to rise to the top.

S

he is one of South Florida’s hottest real estate stars. As President and CEO of Fort Lauderdale-based OneWorld Properties, Peggy Fucci oversees a billion-dollar real estate portfolio that includes Paramount, the 60-story luxury residential tower going up at Miami Worldcenter, and a host of other exclusive high-rises.

But her path to success was nearly blocked by tragedy. When Fucci was 13, her father was killed in a terrorist attack in the family’s native Peru. The grandmother who helped raise her — Fucci’s mother was mostly absent from her life — died within several moths.

“I lost both of them within a year,” she said. “I was on my own and had to become independent.”

After two years of shunting among the homes of relatives and friends, Fucci moved to Florida for her senior year of high school.

She didn’t speak English, so her studies were challenging, and she didn’t have an opportunity to attend college.

BY CHANCE Her entry into real estate wasn’t part of her original life plan. “It was totally by chance,” she said.

After high school graduation, she turned toward banking, landing a job that allowed her to work on

She remembers attending a meeting with a real estate agent on behalf of a client who was selling a condo.

“I didn't know anything about what an agent or broker does,” Fucci said. “But I saw that the commission on that condo sale was more than I made in a year.”

That was enough to persuade her to get a real estate license and quit her job at the bank. It also kept her focused on high-end properties.

When the company she was working for asked her to go into development

sales, she was reluctant. “I didn't think I’d make enough money,” she said. “But I tried it and loved it.”

Then came the collapse of the housing market. At a time when many real estate professionals were fleeing the industry, Fucci decided to start her own company.

“I figured something that’s at the bottom has to come up.”

FAMILY LIFE Fucci balances her globetrotting travel schedule by spending family time with her husband, Rick, and

their three children. “It’s all about partnership,” she said of Rick, an attorney. “I couldn’t do it without him.”

Their oldest daughter, 20, is off at the University of Florida. But Fucci and her husband drive their 13-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter to school when Fucci’s not on the road for work. On the way to school, they talk to their children.

“On the way back,” she said, “we talk to each other. It’s time for us to spend together.”

Despite his death at a young age, Fucci’s father left many happy

memories for her. She can recall times when he helped family friends with rent money, and once when he carried a box of evaporated milk to a neighbor who couldn’t afford to buy formula for her newborn.

Losing him when she was still a child was incredibly difficult, “but I think the experience made me stronger,” she said.

“Whenever I wanted to try something new, I’d think, what do I have to lose?”

The Capó Family They opened El Dorado Furniture 50 years ago with a dream and a vision. Today, they keep looking forward while also giving back.

I

t was in a dinghy named El Dorado that a father, hopeful for a life of freedom, hauled two teenage sons out of Pinar del Río, Cuba’s westernmost province, in the fall of 1966. They carried with them drinking water, pork chunks and an undying optimism for what lied ahead.

Half a year later, on June 27, 1967, Manuel Capó and his boys opened a 4,000-square-foot furniture showroom on Calle Ocho, naming it after the vessel that carried them to a new life. That same day, Capó’s wife and four of his other sons arrived in Miami through the Freedom Flights.

“We didn’t sell anything” on opening day, recalled Luis Capó, now president of El Dorado. Still, “the family was together,” added his brother Carlos, the company’s chief purchasing officer.

PAYING IT FORWARD The family has made it a mission to help those in need through its milestone anniversary campaigns. It started 10 years ago, when El Dorado provided 40 Florida families in need each with $5,000 worth of furniture and continued in 2012 with a 45th anniversary campaign.

It became a tradition, popping up every five years as a way to underscore the company’s appreciation of the communities it serves. The people who receive help are spread from Miami to Fort Myers, wherever El Dorado has a presence.

Now, with its 50th anniversary, El Dorado is upping the ante, spending $250,000 to outfit 50 local families with household goods and services.

“Sometimes we even help them decorate and paint the homes,” Luis Capó said. “Their need just breaks your heart.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR Today, six of Manuel Capó’s sons steer the multimillion-dollar enterprise that their father founded. Do they argue?

“We all want the same thing, but we may differ in tactics,” Luis Capó said. “We get together once a week to discuss business.

[After that,] we go to eat as brothers, no animosity between us.”

Each of the siblings leads a specific part of the business: Along with Luis as president and Carlos as CPO, Pedro is chief operating officer, Julio is treasurer, Jesús is chief information officer, and Roberto is chief marketing officer. They also share larger family responsibilities, taking care of older relatives, insurance policies, medical issues and financial matters.

NEXT GENERATION When Manuel Capó died in 2009 at age 83, his family business had already entered its third generation. At least six of his grandchildren are actively engaged in El Dorado, from managing the distribution and advertising departments to scoping out new furniture trends and inspecting the company’s dozen-plus showrooms.

The younger generation learns from the previous one while injecting new concepts, keeping things fresh. “We listen to their ideas,” Luis Capó said. “The important thing is to keep true to the value and culture.”

Consistency is also an important lesson, Carlos Capó noted, saying it provides a steady compass to those coming up in El Dorado; the same compass that helped their father find his way to Miami. Manuel Capó left his sons with a mantra that has guided them in business and in family matters: “Try to do your best.”

O

n the list of restaurant dishes you may be afraid to try at home, those involving tableside fires are near the top: Bananas Foster, Baked Alaska, Cherries Jubilee.

But Deme Lomas, chef-partner of the new Arson Miami and its neighboring Spanish restaurant, Niu Kitchen, is giving us a reason to ignite a flame in our home kitchens.

The salt-baked whole fish that Lomas serves at Arson — its salt crust is finished with a shot of Pernod before being set ablaze — is so dramatic that it captures the gaze of every diner in the restaurant. And the flavor of the flaky, white-flesh dorade is so fresh, so reminiscent of being on the coast of the Mediterranean, that it begs to be tried at home.

Except for the fire-lighting. That part of the recipe is optional (but encouraged by Lomas).

A LITTLE SHOW “I wanted to make a typical salted fish that you would eat anywhere along the Mediterranean,” Lomas explained. “We added the anise aroma of Pernod, like the French do in their seafood stews. And since the name Arson comes from fire, it seemed logical to light the dorade on fire — and, of course, make a little show out of it.”

While the flames are mostly for show and the Pernod for olfactory amusement, the salt crust is responsible for the dish’s delicate flavor. Baking the fish in a mound of salt seals in the steam that rises off the fish in the oven, and gently seasons it to the point of being lightly briny but not salty.

When it comes time to serve, you crack open the crust, push aside the salt and skin, and separate the fleshy filets from the bones. It’s easy enough to try at home and — even without the Pernod and the flames — sure to impress your date.

CLASSIC TECHNIQUE The salt-crusted dorade is the only dish that arrives to the table on fire at Arson, but everything at Lomas’ new downtown hotspot is dedicated to live-fire cooking. Almost the entire menu, from pastas to seafood to sauces, is cooked in a Josper oven, a Spanish-made grill that is powered by charcoal.

“The idea is to go back to one of the oldest cooking techniques in a time when most chefs are opting for more modern methods,” Lomas said. “Basically, we are returning to the origins of cooking.”

MEDITERRANEAN DORADE ‘A LA SAL’ SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS 2 pounds coarse salt 2 tablespoons whole black peppercorn 1½ cups water 1 (1½-2 pounds) whole dorade, gutted and scaled ¼ cup Pernod

20-25 minutes. Remove from oven and let rest 5-10 minutes.

3. Pour Pernod over the salt crust, then light on fire with a longstemmed lighter.

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the salt, pepper and water together in a large bowl.

4. Once the flames have died down, carefully crack open and remove the salt shell, then filet the fish and serve.

2. Coat the fish on both sides with the salt mixture, then place fish on a foil-lined baking sheet, covering it with more of the salt. Bake until salt becomes dry and crusty, about

Meet the chef “My name is Deme Lomas. I am 35 years old, and I am one of the three owners of Niu Kitchen and Arson Miami.

I am also the chef of these restaurants.

“I was born in a small city near Barcelona and started to develop a curiosity for cooking at a very young age.

When my mother would go out, I would be in the kitchen, making all sorts of little disasters.

“I studied jazz for several years but eventually abandoned it. I found that I could live off of cooking, but not music. I started working in different restaurants around Barcelona, learning as much as I could, and I became executive chef for a restaurant group there in 2008.

“It has been five years since I moved to the United States, three years since I started this project called Niu with my friends and now partners, and a little more than three months since we opened Arson.

Made from rice, water, yeast and koji (an enzyme that converts starch to sugar during fermentation), sake is brewed like beer and fermented like wine. It usually contains about 15 percent to 17 percent alcohol by volume — slightly higher than wine, and therefore a bit more buzzy. Like wine, sake can range from fruity to floral and from sweet to dry, and everything in between, which makes it extremely versatile when playing with different foods.

part of Japanese life for thousands of years, sake has exploded in popularity around the world, including Miami.

Contrary to popular belief, sake is not meant to be consumed warm.

The MOUNTAINS Are Calling With the ski crowds gone, summer is prime time to explore Jackson Hole’s destination-worthy sights, shopping and restaurants.

F

irst things first: “Jackson Hole” is a valley in northwestern Wyoming, just south of Yellowstone National Park and at the base of the Teton Range of mountains. “Jackson” is the valley’s largest and only incorporated town (pop. 10,000). Other communities in Jackson Hole include Kelly, Wilson, Teton Village, Hoback Junction and Moose.

Wherever you are in the valley, it’s the Tetons that dominate, rising 7,000 feet from the floor without so much as a foothill to temper their ascent; Teddy Roosevelt said the Tetons “are what mountains are supposed to look like.”

Add shopping (of a much lower-key kind than in Aspen or Vail), fine dining and plenty of culture to everything outdoorsy you can do, and it’s no wonder most locals will tell you they came here for a year … 20 years ago.

STAY Five years ago, a summertime stay in Teton Village, the community at the base of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, was what you did when you wanted peace and quiet. That’s changed. You can still kick back inside the cowboy-chic Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole (fourseasons.com/ jacksonhole), especially at its 11,600-squarefoot spa. But you can also find plenty of summer action: Steps from the 124-room/suite property’s Base Camp are lift-serviced downhill mountain biking trails, hiking trails, free outdoor concerts and a gondola ride to the valley’s best margaritas.

Hotel Jackson (hoteljackson.com) is completely contemporary. Its 58 rooms are decorated in reclaimed barn wood, leather and patina-ed metals. The Town Square and all of downtown’s shopping and dining are just outside the front door. On the roof? A hot tub.

EAT The husband-and-wife team of Kevin and Ali Cohane satisfy multiple senses with their two cafes, Persephone (persephonebakery.com) and Picnic (picnicjh.com). Trained at Cordon Bleu in Paris, Kevin makes flaky, buttery pastries and crusty baguettes (Persephone) and brownies and breakfast sandwiches (Picnic). Ali, a graphic designer, designed each space.

Next door to Persephone is Healthy Being Juicery (healthybeingjuice.com), where founder/ juice chef Jessica Marlo Vandenbroeke has recently added a raw-foods menu and where her cold-pressed Longevity drink starts with more than 2½ pounds of produce.

Being in Wyoming, it feels natural that you can get a pizza topped with raw beef. As done

by Snake River Grill (snakerivergrill.com), one of the valley’s first fine-dining restaurants, this steak tartare pizza — Black Angus beef, garlic aioli, red onion, capers, parsley — is not a gimmick; it is likely the best pie you’ll ever have.

Jackson Hole has long been celebrated as a mecca for western and wildlife art. Frequent Art Basel Miami Beach attendee Mariam Diehl is working to get it on the map for contemporary art collectors, too. Architectural Digest and Vogue have featured homes by WRJ Design (wrjdesign.com).

The design firm’s 2,800-square-foot Jackson showroom is an exquisitely curated selection of sophisticated home goods, from brass skulls mounted with real animal horns by San Francisco-based artist Ashley Tudor to 17th-century European antiques.

MADE stocks smaller, whimsical items, while Mountain Dandy skews larger (and more masculine) with items like leather club chairs, cashmere pillows and industrial desks.

DO This summer, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (jacksonhole.com) unveils the country’s newest via ferrata (Italian for “iron way”) climbing routes. Take the Bridger Gondola to 9,000 feet and, with the help of bolts, iron rungs and strands of cable affixed to vertical rock, go for a climb. Part of one course includes a 110-foot suspension bridge over an 80-foot-deep chasm.

Looking for something more grounded?

Jenny Lake is the most popular spot in Grand Teton National Park (nps.gov/grte), and for good reason: It’s stunning. Escape the crowds by taking a 10-minute ferry ride to the lake’s western shore, where you can do a short hike to Hidden Falls.

At the National Museum of Wildlife Art (wildlifeart.org), it’s likely you’ll see wildlife —

bighorn sheep and coyote, usually — in real life on the walk from the parking lot to the museum.

Inside, the definition of wildlife art is diverse.

This summer’s shows include Andy Warhol’s Endangered Species Portfolio, a collection of hummingbird prints from British ornithologist John Gould, and selected images from National Geographic fellow Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark collection. Palate, the restaurant that opened here in May, has already established itself as the place for weekend brunch.

If hoodoos, pinnacles and cacti are more your vision of idyl than snow-capped, pine-forested peaks, consider Amangiri (aman.com/resorts/ amangiri). Situated in Utah about 600 miles south of Jackson Hole (and a gorgeous 4½-hour drive from Las Vegas), the mesa-minimalist resort has 34 soothingly monochromatic suites with walls of glass that open to the Colorado Plateau. Lying in bed, press a button to open the shades and, for as far as you can see, there’s nothing but natural landscape, a work in progress for more than 180 million years.

Amangiri offers adventures like hot-air ballooning, fossil hunting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, yoga and rock climbing. But it’s perfectly acceptable to spend days by the hotel’s pool; it curves, lima bean-like, around a dramatic finger of sandstone. —DM

Jeff Conine may have earned the nickname Mr. Marlin for his noteworthy history as an inaugural member of Miami’s baseball franchise. However, the moniker he likes best is “Dad.” And as his son Griffin follows in his footsteps, he’s one proud dad.

Griffin was late to the ballgame. Though he’d spend his childhood evenings at the Marlins stadium while his father played left field, the boy was more interested in his skateboard than what was happening on the diamond. Jeff, meantime, was careful not to push. “I just wanted them to be active,” he said of his three kids.

EXPERT ADVICE

So when Griffin later decided to pursue baseball, his newly retired dad signed on as coach. Jeff focused on the basics — swinging, throwing, catching — and helped lead Griffin’s traveling team throughout middle school. “Youth baseball in South Florida is high-intensity, and there’s a lot of pressure put on them,” Jeff said. “I wanted a relaxed atmosphere.”

Jeff’s no-pressure approach is part of what has kept his son invested in the game. “I found my own way to baseball, and it’s why I still love it today,” Griffin said. “It’s awesome to be able to get his advice.”

Most recently, the father has been helping his son stay mentally tough and focused on the field, something Jeff acknowledged

can be difficult while he’s the spectator. “When I watch him at bat, it’s almost like I’m there,” Jeff said. “I want him to do well because I know what it does to you mentally if you don’t get hits or come through for your team.”

‘MAKES ME PROUD’

One of their favorite pastimes is sharing a steakhouse dinner. But this father-son duo is hoping they’ll spend this Father’s Day not in a restaurant but with Griffin’s college team in a playoff game. “I thought he’d be able to play college somewhere and get an education out of it,” Jeff said of his son. “But the way his game has progressed, he could be a high draft pick.

“Not only is he doing well right now, but the way he goes about his business, the way he plays the game, the teammate he is — it makes me as proud as any stat he could put up.”

Two-time All-Star Jeff Conine, an original Marlins player and the only one on both World Series championship teams, is now rooting for his son Griffin, a Duke baseball standout. Look for Jeff at the MLB All-Star FanFest, which Miami is hosting for the first time, July 7-11 at Miami Beach Convention Center.

Stella Sirmans, 7, drives a hard bargain. For her latest artwork, a landscape painting on canvas, she’s asking $20 and not a penny less.

“You still owe me for another one!” she reminds the potential buyer.

She’s negotiating with none other than Pérez Art Museum Miami executive director Franklin Sirmans, aka Dad. “I want it,” he tells her, noncommittally. “But it’s a little more expensive than past works.”

Franklin chuckles as he describes Stella’s entrance into the art world. “She’s an artist, so I’ve been acquiring some of her work recently. We insert them into a conversation with other pieces we have.

They’re hung next to works you would know from contemporary art, artists who are much older.”

‘SHE TEACHES ME’

It’s no surprise that art is integral to the Sirmans’ lives. Still, Franklin says he is struck by how much he’s influenced by his daughter. “Every day she teaches me. She allows me to consider things from different angles and put myself in someone else’s shoes and see all sides of every issue. We can be staid in our ways after a certain point in our lives, and I feel fortunate to have someone who challenges me.”

Stella’s pint-sized perspective is a constant consideration when

He bounces questions off her: How does it make you feel? What does it make you ask?

INDOORS AND OUT

“Our education programs are really at the forefront of what we do,” Franklin says. “We have a huge program funded by the Knight Foundation. Kids are in the museum every morning before our paid guests.”

When they’re not discussing art — or negotiating acquisition prices — they enjoy Saturday morning tennis on adjacent courts, occasional trips to the Pinecrest Farmers Market, and swimming. “We love the water,” he says. “If we’re not at the beach, we are swimming in the pool. My wife and I have been in L.A. and Houston, so we are used to pretty good weather. But nothing beats Miami.”

Franklin Sirmans is the executive director of PAMM. At home, his 7-year-old daughter, Stella, is boss — and a constant source of inspiration.

“I never thought Tyler would be working with me. Tyler was very gifted in mathematics, so we thought he was going to be an aeronautical engineer.

All the employees [at Joe’s Stone Crab] remember when he was tiny. They’d say, ‘You will be just like your Dad when you grow up!’ And he’d say, ‘Never!’

I’d be cooking on the grill and ask him to help out. He’d say, ‘No, it’s too hot!’

“Tyler played two years of minor league hockey. He felt it wasn’t for him anymore, and he came on board with me as a line cook. During the summers, I sent him away for internships: The French Laundry, Tru, Morimoto. He grew a passion for the world of food.

“From a father’s perspective, it’s very rewarding to see your son grow up in the business and guide him away from some of the mistakes I made early in my career. But it’s been hard to keep that separation between chef and father.

There are times I have to come down on him. But at the end of the day, I’m his dad, and I’m extremely proud of him.

“I grew up playing hockey, and I was his coach, so he understands how I run my kitchen. He was disciplined in hockey, and he takes that attitude to the restaurant. He’s taken my steak program to incredible levels.

He’s watching weather reports and the market for cattle. He’s working with family farms. He’s tagging every piece of meat that comes in. He’s taking it from birth all the way to customers. That’s an obsession, and not many chefs can do that.

A RARE BREED

“We spend a lot of time eating out — sometimes too much! — and we do competitions together. But outside of that, I try to give him his own life. I tell him to stay out of trouble, stay out of bars, and that sometimes life in Miami can get to you a bit. He’s very career-driven and family-oriented.

He’s got his own friends. He still plays hockey.

“We are a rare breed, a fatherson in the industry, because most chefs would not encourage their kids to come into this profession. I’m excited to see where his career goes.

I hope he keeps me involved every step of the way.”

André Bienvenu, the longtime executive chef at Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach, works with son Tyler, a sous chef at the restaurant in charge of meat butchery and aging. Summer, by the way, when stone crab is out of season, is the perfect time to try the steak at Joe’s.

Steven: “We’d been kicking around the idea of becoming dads for 10 years, but I was hesitant. I wasn’t entirely sure I could be a good dad. Then Paul invited me to go with him on a medical mission in the highlands of Guatemala. We saw about 3,000 patients in two weeks, the majority kids. It sparked a parental instinct in me.”

Paul: “I wanted kids for a while. I had considered adopting a child from Guatemala, but it’s very difficult with the government and being a gay couple, so we decided surrogacy was a better way to do it.”

Steven: “Our surrogate has become a good friend. The whole process could have been very difficult. We feel very lucky.”

Paul: “Given that we are an interracial couple, we wanted to find a mixed-race egg donor. That, combined with our DNA, means she’s a

multicultural baby. We think that is part of the strength of Miami, that it’s such a multicultural city, and that’s one of the reasons we are happy living here. She loves going outside and being on walks. She loves Fairchild [Tropical Botanic] Garden. She likes to watch plants and palm trees.”

Steven: “She really enjoys the butterflies and orchids at Fairchild.

We are lucky we can spend a lot of time outdoors. She’s a very visual child.”

Paul: “Her nickname is Eagle Eye.” Steven: “We are both in our late 40s. We traveled and made the most of Miami. We had a lot of fun. Vivian has changed our lives in almost every way. We don’t go out as much as we used to. We can already recognize that our group of friends is changing. We are not seeing people we used to see as much and transitioning toward a different stage in our lives. It’s a welcome change.”

Paul: “Ten kids have been born on our block in the past year.

She’ll have a whole crew to hang out with. A whole soccer team!”

What went through your mind when you found out you were having twins? “The doctor had the stethoscope and found a strong heartbeat.

I noticed he continued to stay focused on the stethoscope, and I was concerned he had heard something not normal. He says, ‘Wait a second, I got a second heartbeat.’ And I said, ‘Wait, the baby has two heartbeats?’ He said, ‘No, you have two babies!’ It was an anxious moment, but we were actually very happy to have twins.”

It’s such a diverse community with so many positive things happening.

My son plays soccer and golf, and my daughter is a dancer. When we’re not watching them, we are on the boat. We also like to work out as a family, so we’ll go jogging or biking.”

What has surprised you most about the father you’ve become?

“You quickly realize how much you emulate your parents. I walk around the house turning off every light the kids leave on, saying ‘The electricity isn’t free!’ You have to laugh to yourself because that’s what my Dad gave me a hard time about growing up. I’m a chip off the old block! I also try to instill in them the same things my parents instilled in me: integrity, hard work, perseverance, family, religion.”

How do you balance your family life with your work schedule?

“I made a commitment to have breakfast with them every morning before they go to school, because I tend to be late for dinner. We spend time talking. Now that they have cellphones, it’s amazing how a text message here or there is extremely rewarding. I could be in the middle of a meeting and get a text message from one of my kids, and it doesn’t matter what I’m talking about in the meeting, I will respond to them. As much as we hate personal devices and mobile phones, this aspect of connectivity is amazing. I can always reach out and say I love you.”

What do you appreciate about raising your kids in Miami? “I’m homegrown, so the fact that I’m able to raise my kids in the same community is special. Miami today has so much more to offer.
