Message from the Chief Conductor I’m always filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation before every CSO season, but none more so than our spectacular 2019 season. Having celebrated the 60th birthday of the orchestra in grand style in 2018, we now turn our sights to our new performance home in the centre of the city, the magnificent refurbished and renewed concert hall in the Christchurch Town Hall.

Message from the Prime Minister of New Zealand The arts are an essential part of our individual, community and national identity. In fact I have always believed arts and creativity are integral and inseparable parts of what it is to be human. As is the case with so many things that are good in life, the earlier you start on the arts journey, the better. I am delighted that from 2019 the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra is expanding the role it plays in our community through its extended award winning Community Engagement Programme – with an emphasis on accessibility for all, including working with young people, people with disabilities, and members of the community who might otherwise be unable to experience live orchestral music. New Zealanders are more likely than ever to believe the arts benefit our economy, our local communities, and our personal well-being. I commend the CSO as it takes the next phase in its own journey and welcome its bold and exciting new vision of what it means to be an orchestra of today; one that is embedded in its city, responding to the different needs of its community and using music as a platform to enhance social wellbeing and support positive social change. I wish the CSO all the best for a successful 2019 season and encourage you to take part in all that it has to offer both on the stage and beyond.

Community Engagement Karawhiua! Let’s Play! Karawhiua! Let’s Play! is our critically acclaimed school residency programme in which CSO musicians base themselves in a school over the course of a week. We work with students from all year groups, supporting them as they develop class based music projects which are then performed at the end of the residency for the school community, whānau and supporters. During 2019, we will be based in a different school each term and are especially interested in working with schools that have little or no music programmes in place but are keen to offer their students the opportunity to participate in musical experiences.

The opening concert of the 2019 Lamb and Hayward Masterworks Series celebrates our return to the Christchurch Town Hall with a concert sparkling with orchestral delights. Phoenix, by acclaimed composer Christopher Cree Brown, has been specially commissioned to commemorate the occasion. Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s exhilarating Firebird Suite is an exotic fairytale, where good ultimately triumphs over evil. Originally composed for the Ballets Russes, this remarkable work dazzles the listener with an incredible array of orchestral colour. Two of New Zealand’s most exciting pianists, Michael Houston and Tony Chen Lin combine for this special evening to perform Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos. The concert concludes with Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome. This evocative tone poem captures the moods and sounds of Rome, including the ebullience of children at play and the contemplative atmosphere of the catacombs, before reaching a thrilling climax as the mighty legionaries of Ancient Rome march by.

Saint Saëns completed his third and final symphony in 1886 and declared “I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have accomplished here, I will never achieve again”. Hugely popular from its premiere to current day, this glorious work revels in the endless possibilities of sound that a large orchestra, augmented by piano and organ, is capable of creating. Described by critics as possessing “an incendiary technique and warm stage presence”, Chinese pianist Moye Chen has got the music world talking. Commissioned by a mysterious stranger to compose a Requiem Mass, Mozart died before he was able to complete what many consider to be his magnum opus. These shadowy and tragic circumstances have only added to the mystique of this compelling and deeply personal work. American composer Charles Ives wrote The Unanswered Question in 1906 as part of a suite titled Two Contemplations. This short work is deeply reverential, incorporating hymn-like qualities that encourage us to ponder the eternal question of existence.

Tchaikovsky composed his fourth symphony against a composition to be “an echo of my most intimate spiritual life”. The music traverses dramatic opening fanfares, melancholic nostalgia, rustic dances before concluding with a fiery and wild finale.
