05|PERFORMANCE LIVING This cooperative housing development is designed for the active user. Programmatically designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, the building consists of a series of recreational activities that are chosen specifically based on their muscle group activation and cardiovascular intensity, while maintaining a high degree of social interaction. The design also promotes community through a unique public park connection, combined with a raised court space acting as a private extension of the park.

GAZE 02|UNIVERSAL MOUNTAIN HUT PROJECT STATEMENT A typical alpine hut has one main function, the safety of the user. However, these spaces of refuge can contribute to the users experience of the landscape they are exploring. GAZE aims to become a model for a universal hut design that can be air lifted into any alpine location and climate. Pr-manufactured and modular, it can be produced for any site, on or off grid. Using Green-coat steel with a bio-technology coating the shell, the hut is able to withstand freezing climates, corrosion and high level of UV radiation exposure.

The hut focuses on the singular commonality between these various destinations; the night sky. Utilizing a two-level interior, an interior lift raises the second level, pushes the exterior walls outwards (rotating on steel pivots), forming a flat viewing platform, and thus revealing the sky. This same platform maintains the enclosure of the main level underneath, preserving interior heat. Embedded within the roof structure are vibrant silicon sheets that roll outwards while opening to allow 360° protection from the winds, creating a still-air micro-climate for viewing the sky while promoting the huts visibility.

The main level is broken into three zones that define the progression through the hut. The first section is the entrance, providing spaces for hanging wet clothes, and ample room to keep dirty items tucked away. The middle section is the eating and prep spaces. Cook food or heat the hut using the propane tank inside the main table, and utilize the counter spaces for trekking preparation. Safety supplies and emergency kits are also stored here. The third section is the lounge space, fitted with bean bag chairs, views to the outside, and ladder access to the sleeping quarters on the second level. The upper level provides overhead views to the sky when closed, and becomes the open air platform when open.

Rocky, grassy, muddy, snowy, shale or sloped, the footings of this hut can be interchanged to allow for a stable foundation connection on any terrain, maximizing its usability on a global scale.

COCKER 03|RYERSON FEATURE WALL Project Description Position: Fabrication and Assembly Team Member | 2014-2015 For this installation I worked under two masters students to create their vision for the Ryerson University Gallery Feature Wall. This was a great experience in physical design implementation, and in understanding team coordination and attention to detail involved in the manifestation of a project.

Understanding and learning about new materials, how they are treated and cut, the different software involved throughout the process, and the precision required, were all valuable elements that helped me develop better technical understanding of building methods and fabrication, as well as working cohesively and effectively with various team members.

04| SPORT HALL + PARKOUR TRAINING FACILITY

PROJECT STATEMENT Situated in a growing community, and derived from distinct existing site conditions, this sport hall and parkour training facility provides unique program opportunities and public spaces in an area lacking.

Through its form and exterior court-spaces, this facility is designed to enhance the pedestrian realm, utilizing form, lighting, and programmatic techniques to provide a hub away from the street, while also creating specific interior conditions.

PROCESSION TO THE LOOKOUT IS AN EXPERIENCE IN ITSELF, AS THE USER BEGINS THEIR JOURNEY OUT TOWARDS THE EDGE OF THE WETLAND. HERE IS WHEN THE LOOK FOR RARE BIRDS TRULY BEGINS, THEREFORE IT NEEDED TO BE THOUGHTFULLY CONSIDERED

SIMILAR TO THE LIFT OF A BIRDS FLIGHT PATH, THE USER WILL EXPERIENCE A GRADUAL ASCENT INTO THE SKY, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE LENGTH OF THE PATHWAY AS IT ELEVATES UPWARDS TO GIVE THE MOST IDEAL VANTAGE POINT, WHILE SEAMLESSLY EXTENDING FROM THE LANDSCAPE AT GRADE.

TO ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE THE LIFTING PATH IS SURROUNDED BY AN ENCLOSED SLEEVE, PROVIDING A TACTILE SKIN THAT GIVES THE LOOKOUT A UNIQUE IDENTITY, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING SHELTER AND SAFETY AS THE USER PROCEEDS UPWARDS TOWARDS THEIR PATH VANTAGE POINT.

PROJECT STATEMENT Lightly seated on the marsh of Pape Lake, ASCENSION breaks away from the traditional tower form. Understanding the importance of procession, it integrates the journey and landscape into an approach to the final viewing deck. As you travel along the wooden walkway towards the structure, you are given a glimpse of your ascent before entering one of the two sleeve entrances. With no threshold separating the walkway and the ascent through the tower, the path carries you up through the enclosed structure. The skin of the tower surrounds the path as it rises through the decks, varying in porosity, allowing for spontaneous views across the lakes and marsh. Opening up half way, you reach the lower observation deck. The covered platform provides a 360 view, with the dominant view looking back towards where you came. Rope netting provides an opportunity for close interaction with bird species, or a unique glance outwards underneath the upper deck and out towards the water. At an incredible 11 metres, the upper observation deck opens completely to the surrounding landscape, leaving the open sky above unobstructed.

BY CUTTING INTO THE SKIN, A LOWER LEVEL PLATFORM IS CREATED, ALLOWING FOR A 360 VIEW MID-WAY THROUGH THEIR JOURNEY. ROPE NETTING AT THIS LEVEL IS INTEGRATED TO ALLOW USERS TO LAY DOWN ABOVE THE WETLANDS BELOW, AND TO LOOK OUT UNDERNEATH THE STRUCTURE TO THE VIEWS AHEAD.

BY INTEGRATING PLAYFUL OPENINGS INTO THE SKIN, THE USER IS PRESENTED WITH SMALLER FRAMED VIEWS OF THE OPEN LANDSCAPE BEYOND THE SLEEVE, EXCITING THEIR INTEREST IN THE TOP PLATFORM VIEW. FROM THE EXTERIOR THEY GIVE THE TOWER AN EXPRESSIVE MOTION, THE SLEEVE ILLUSION OF UPWARDS MOMENTUM.

THE FINAL ELEVATION INSINUATES ASCENT UPWARDS AND OUTWARDS, LIFTING THE USER TO THE TOP VIEW DECK THAT PROVIDES A FULL 360 VIEW OF THE AREA AT THE HEIGHT OF 11 METRES ABOVE GRADE. THE STRUCTURE REINFORCES THE MOMENTUM OF TOWER, LIFTING THIS EXCITING FORM PLATFORMS FROM THE LANDSCAPE AND ALLOWING THE USER TO REACH UP TOWARDS THE SKY.

POROSITY

Designed using locally sourced materials of wood and steel, ASCENSION is capable of being transported to site with minimal effort and impact, and installed dominantly by hand. Natural materials compliment the site, allowing the structure to sit comfortably in the landscape, and provide minimal impact on environment. Wooden piles driven into the earth stabilize and anchor the tower, while also minimizing the footprint on the site.

With a strong form, it lifts out of the landscape with ease, its contact with the marsh being light and minimal.

Home gardening has made a comeback in recent years as the new generation adapts to the idea of holistic and sustainable living. Houseplants have become increasingly popular both as decorative elements and for growing healthy food and herbs.

With absorb, we have designed an innovative and hassle free product that eliminates the stress of plant maintenance, while enhancing the living space through unique and modern design.

How It Works As the soil dries, the process of osmosis allows water inside the orb to be absorbed into the soil. This ensures the soil is constantly moist without heavy maintenance for the user. There is no longer a worry about over watering or under watering your plants. All you have to do is remove the lid and refill the orb once every two weeks.

Water Container The water orb not only stores the volume of water necessary for two weeks of hassle free irrigation, but can be unassembled for easy cleaning and also be used as a decorative planter.

Watering Stem Absorb’s detachable stem allows for easy cleaning and refilling.

Drainage slits along the base of the stem release water to nourish the plants while keeping unwanted debris out. The bottom end is solid and tapered so the device can be easily inserted into the soil, without clogging the drainage slits.

Photosynthesis Absorb’s lid contains a UV light to maximize plant growth. This allows plants to flourish in darker conditions, providing more flexibility when locating plants in your home. The flat base also allows for easy handling.

Absorb’s innovative design allows for dual function. Simply remove the stem, and the watering orb becomes a decorative glowing planter. The UV light can be switched on in both conditions to encourage plant growth and give your home a sleek and modern touch.

SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS APPROACHES TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY The design of this sport hall takes into consideration several sustainable approaches. The exterior facade is designed to combat heat loss and heat gain issues. With limited glazing, and controllled cantelevers for shading, the facade reduces loads on the HVAC system, as well as controlling the amount of unwanted light within the gymnasium. Furthermore, specifically located skylights allow daylighting into the major spaces, but are designed to limit the amount of direct sunlight entering the space. The roof is comprized of two seperate green roofs, seperated by a terrace, which facilitates as a means of rain water collection that is drained to the cistern under the west facade entrance. These aim to significantly reduce the amount of rain water runnoff and to reduce the heat island effect in this downtown area. Inside the building, that rain water is re-used as a part of the grey water system installed into the building. This in combination with the low flor utilities for showers, toilets, and faucets aims to sigificantly reduce the amount of water waste and to minimize the water costs. Lastely the interior materials and structure were chosen due to their longevity and durrability, as well as their local production and LEEd certification.
