Branson Globe to Collect Food and Toys

The management and staff of The Branson Globe are joining forces with our advertisers to help those in need in the area, through two local nonprofit organizations.

The Branson Globe and friends are holding a food drive and toy drive now through December 23, collecting nonperishable food items and new, unwrapped toys.

Food items collected will be donated to Christian Action Ministries, a local help-agency who assists those in need with groceries, through food banks in both Branson and Forsyth, and mobile outreach.

Toys collected will be taken to the Salvation Army for use in one of their holiday assistance programs, the Toy Store, slated for later in December where parents can

“shop” for gifts for their children ages 0 to 17 for Christmas.

Advertisers and friends of The Branson Globe will be assisting with the collection of donations.

Currently, donations may be taken to The Rogue Chef, located at 2715 West 76 Country Boulevard, The World’s Largest Toy Museum (Memory Barn Entrance) at 3609 West 76 Country Boulevard, or The Flag Store at 114 South Commercial Street. Donations may also be taken to The Branson Globe office, located at 2460 South Business 65, Suite 106, in Hollister.

Additional drop-off sites will be added soon.

Located near the fountain on the Branson Landing Square, the impressive tree stands 63-feet tall, displaying lights of all colors in unique patterns, set to music.

Currently, the state-of-the-art tree rotates through six choreographed songs, with more to come. The newest addition to the Branson Landing Christmas decor, the Christmas tree is the tallest and largest tree in the Branson city limits and has the capacity for a billion different lighting combinations.

The Thrift Store at Taneyhills Library is bursting with holiday bargains. Donations have been robust and the volunteers have been busy as a team of Santa’s elves sorting, cleaning and pricing the new inventory.

“We have a wide variety of merchandise in the store,” states man-

ager Mary Lynne Grimes. “Everything from household items to golf balls are in stock. If you are looking to add a festive flare to your Christmas table, we’ve received some beautiful holiday serving pieces.” Grimes speculates the increase in donations is from people sheltering at home. “It’s obvious

Want to feel happier? Take the Hot Chocolate Challenge

By Tiffany Brown, Staff Writer More common these days than church bells or choir bells at Christmastime is the jingling we hear at many a storefront. It is the sound of faithful volunteers ringing out a call to give. The sight of those red metal buckets has become such a normal part of the Christmas season that it’s easy to walk right by without giving it a second thought. I’m guilty of it myself. Many times I don’t want to dig in my purse for change simply because I’m freezing and want to get indoors out of the cold as quickly as possible. My dislike for chilly temperatures makes me sympathize for those selfless bell-ringers standing outdoors for hours on end. This got me thinking about what I could do to help make their time there a little bit warmer and more enjoyable. So I came up with a plan.

I loaded my kids up in the car, and we headed to the nearest gas station. I told them each to get a cup of hot chocolate, but that they weren’t allowed to drink it. Then I gave them the plan. We would

drive up to the front of a few stores which had bell ringers at the doors and surprise them with a cup of hot chocolate. When at first my kids were sad about not getting to drink it themselves, they were suddenly filled with excitement. I had also thought they might be a little apprehensive about approaching a complete stranger and giving them a hot drink. Boy, was I wrong! On the contrary, they started arguing about who got to give their hot chocolate away first. What followed was one of the most fun experiences my kids and I have ever had.

The initial reaction of those being given the hot chocolate was that of confusion, then surprise. Then came questions like, “Is that really for me?” and “Are you serious?”

At the response in the affirmative, a smile would spread across their face. Sometimes you’d see a tear form in their eye. An outpouring of

thanks would immediately follow.

Then as we drove away, we’d look back to see them sipping away, a smile still on their face. After the exhilarating experience, I took the kids back to the gas station to get some hot chocolate of their own.

What we quickly found was that it doesn’t always take huge gestures to touch a life. Sometimes just making someone feel noticed

and meeting a momentary need can leave an impact on them that they will remember forever.

And now, this is where the challenge comes in. Take this idea and run with it! See how exhilarating it is when you do something out of the ordinary to make someone’s day better. In the process, you’ll find yourself feeling much happier, too!

Sarah Fuller 1st woman to score in Power Five football game

By Teresa M. Walker NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sarah Fuller became the first woman to score in a Power Five conference football game, cleanly kicking a pair of extra points for Vanderbilt in a 4217 loss to Tennessee on Saturday.

“This whole time has been if I can do it, if I’m good enough to do it,” Fuller said after the game. “It wasn’t if I was a girl or not. So that’s something

Fuller got her historic chance with 1:50 left in the first quarter.

Branson Star Theater: Bring a toy, see a show

Branson Star Theater invites the community to help provide Christmas toys for local children and see a great show at the same time. On Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19, anyone contributing a new toy will receive a free ticket for the theater’s Nashville Roadhouse Live show. Toys will be collected around the Christmas tree and grand piano in the theater lobby and may be brought unwrapped, or wrapped and labeled as suitable for boy, girl, or either, plus the approximate age range. Toys will be distributed through the Salvation Army.

For those who want to participate but can’t make it to a show, toys may be brought to the theater during regular box office hours this week: Tuesday: 12 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 10 p.m.

Wednesday: 6 – 10 p.m.

Thursday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Acting manager Chris Kendrick said the performers and staff at the Branson Star Theater wanted to give back to the community, especially this year when many families have experienced illness or had jobs impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week’s shows featured a food drive in conjunction with discounted tickets, and contributions of non-perishable food items are still being accepted this week.

The high-energy Nashville Roadhouse Live features recording artist Stevie Lee Woods and the Nashville Roadhouse Band. The band members are well recognized, award-winning musicians around Branson and in the Nashville recording industry, some with their own local shows. The musical selections are a blend of country and rock, guaranteed to have everybody singing along with a favorite.

In addition to food and toy drives, the theater will serve dinner for up to 28 local persons in need, prior to the Saturday, Dec. 19, show. Attendees will also be invited to stay and enjoy the show. Signup is required, upon recommendation from local individuals or through the Salvation Army and Elevate Branson. Also, on Christmas Eve, four area families will receive a catered Christmas dinner personally deliv-

ered by Santa Claus to their homes.

“This has been a tough year,” said Stevie Lee Woods. “It’s been tough in the music business, too, but we wanted to find a way to bless some people right here in our area.”

Charley Pride overcame racial barriers as country music star

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Charley Pride wasn’t country

music’s first Black artist, but he reached heights that had not been

available to early Black singers and musicians in the genre. And

he did it by winning over millions of country music fans.

While Pride’s career path was paved by artists like Opry pioneer DeFord Bailey, the Grammy-winner’s success put him on par with his white peers, including Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell and Merle Haggard, in a way that had never been afforded to Black artists before.

Pride, whose hits include “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” and “Is

Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” died Saturday in Dallas of complications from COVID-19, according to his publicist. He was 86.

The pride of Sledge, Mississippi, was the son of a sharecropper who initially turned to sports as a way to a better life.

He was a pitcher and outfielder in the Negro American League with the Memphis Red Sox and in the Pioneer League in Montana.

Despite bleak 2020, celebrities make effort to brighten year

By Jonathan Landrum Jr. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yes, 2020 may seem like a complete fail with all the constant bad news and tragic moments. It’s been filled with gloom and doom(scrolling), but some celebrities and those inspired by them have tried to brighten a bleak year.

Some like singer Dolly Parton donated money to fight the coronavirus, John Krasinski put a spotlight on good news at a crucial time and DJ D-Nice played music to dance away your anxiousness about the unfolding pandemic.

Here are a few examples of those efforts to make 2020 a little better for others.

DOLLY’S VACCINE DONATION In April, shortly after the coronavirus was declared a pandemic, country music icon Dolly Parton

donated $1 million toward researching the virus at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The singer’s donation was used to help fund the development of Moderna’s vaccine, the second experimental COVID-19 drug to yield extraordinarily strong early results during trials. Parton didn’t stop there. She starred in Dolly Parton’s “Christmas on the Square,” playing an angel in the Netflix musical. She also put out new holiday music, “A Holly Dolly Christmas” with a same-titled TV special where she sang hymns, holiday pop classics and tunes from her new album, and shared her personal and faithbased Christmas memories. And if that wasn’t enough, she had time to help Cyndi Lauper’s annual concert to combat youth homelessness, too.

SERENADE TO NEIGHBORS In the second week of France’s lockdown, Paris-based opera singer Stephane Senechal serenaded his neighbors with renditions of the French national anthem. He along with musicians — professional and amateur — sang from their balconies or windows to uplift neighbors. During France’s second lockdown, Senechal was back at his window, sharing his strong vocals a couple times a week.

CLUB QUARANTINE During the pandemic’s early stage, DJ D-Nice created a virtual remedy for anyone dealing with the lockdown blues. He hosted Homeschool at Club Quarantine on his Instagram Live, where he spun popular tunes on the turntables at his home. His sets started

with just a few hundred viewers — mainly friends — then blossomed to hundreds of thousands.

An array of celebs even tuned in: from Rihanna and Janet Jackson to Jimmy Fallon and Mark Zuckerberg. Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey popped in for a listen, and even Stevie Wonder tried to use the “join” feature to be on screen with D-Nice and interact with him.

DANCING IN THE RAIN Anthony Mmesoma Madu gained fame through a simple cellphone video of him performing the pirouette without shoes in the drizzling rain in Nigeria earlier this year. The 11-year-old Nigerian boy thought the footage would be used for a common film study session, but the video spread on social media thanks to his trainer,

Daniel Ajala, who posted it. By the end of August, the video garnered more than 20 million views on social media including by actors Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo.

Impressed by his dancing, Erivo decided to sponsor Madu’s training and helped bring the video to the attention of the New Yorkbased American Ballet Theater, who offered him a scholarship.

FASHION’S FRONT-LINE GEAR When COVID-19 initially spread throughout the U.S., it resulted in a face mask shortage.

Fashion designer Christian Siriano met the shortage with his own solution. After seeing the cases skyrocket, the “Project Runway” star tweeted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo about doing his part.

He called her performance “absolutely refreshing.”

VERZUZ SERIES A friendly competition between music producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland on social media started off to entertain homebound fans during the pandemic. But their platform eventually evolved into a place where some of music’s biggest stars could compete against each other in the same fashion.

The two Grammy-winning legends created the “Verzuz” series, which faces off two musicians in a song-against-song battle on Instagram Live. The series has grown

After playing minor league baseball, he ended up in Helena, Montana, where he worked in a zinc smelting plant by day and played country music in nightclubs at night.

Baseball was Pride’s first success, but it was the Grand Ole Opry that his father insisted everyone listen to on their home radio that would prove to be his lasting legacy.

“Everything we listened to was what he had tuned it to, so I got to listening to Grand Ole Opry and all when I was small and I got hooked on it and it just went from there,” Pride told The Associated Press at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in 2017. “I had no idea that I was preparing myself for this, but I’m glad, especially since I didn’t make it in baseball.”

His first few singles were sent to radio stations without a publicity photo. After his race became known, a few country radio stations refused to play his music, and some promoters were hesitant to book him.

Until the early 1990s, when Cleve Francis came along, Pride was the only Black country singer signed to a major label. During his career, other Black country artists such as Linda Martell, O.B. McClinton and Stoney Edwards were also charting country songs, as well as Ray Charles and the Pointer Sisters. In 1993, he joined the Grand Ole Opry cast in Nashville.

“They used to ask me how it feels to be the ‘first colored country singer,‘ ” he told The Dallas Morning News in 1992. “Then it was ‘first Negro country singer;’

then ‘first Black country singer.’

Now I’m the `first African-American country singer.′ That’s about the only thing that’s changed. This country is so race-conscious, so ate-up with colors and pigments. I call it ‘skin hangups’ — it’s a disease.”

Still, he remains the only Black country artist to achieve many of those heights, a sign that country music still has a long way to go to breaking down the racial walls, even decades later.

Throughout his career, he sang positive songs instead of sad ones often associated with country music.

“Music is a beautiful way of expressing oneself, and I truly believe music should not be taken as a protest,” he told The Associated Press in 1985. “You can go too far in anything — singing, acting, whatever — and become politi-

He was the first Black artist to win the genre’s highest prize, CMA Award entertainer of the year in 1971, over nominees Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Jerry Reed and Conway Twitty. He was the first Black co-host of the CMA Awards in 1975 with Campbell and earned a lifetime achievement award at the CMA Awards this year. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2017.

Pride released dozens of albums and sold more than 25 million records during a career that began in

the mid-1960s. Hits besides “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” in 1971 included “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” “Burgers and Fries,” “Mountain of Love,” and “Someone Loves You Honey.”

As a trailblazer, he inspired countless other Black country artists, including Darius Rucker, who moved from rock to country.

“My heart is so heavy,” Rucker wrote on Twitter. “He destroyed barriers and did things that no one had ever done. But today Im thinking of my friend. Heaven just got one of the finest people I know.I miss and love u CP!” Pride joined up with country singer Jimmie Allen to perform “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” at the CMA Awards in November, his last performance.

“Thank you for unapologetically you and being the manifestation of our dreams. Our potential. The realization that WE can be anything we want to be. Even a country singer,” said country singer Rissi Palmer on Twitter. “I’m so angry about this death. This was preventable.”

“I’d like to be remembered as a good person who tried to be a good entertainer and made people happy, was a good American who paid his taxes and made a good living,” Pride told The AP in 1985.

“I tried to do my best and contribute my part.”

He is survived by his wife, Rozene, whom he married in 1956; three children, Kraig, Dion and Angela; and several grandchildren.

Free Narcan available in Stone and Taney counties “One overdose death is too many,” said Dr. Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

In 2019, there were 1,094 opioid-related overdoses in Missouri.

They were loved ones, neighbors, and fellow community members.

“As a community, we can work together to save lives,” said Marietta Hagan, CoxHealth Population Health Services. Hagan is the project coordinator for the Stone and Taney Counties Substance Use Initiative.

Thanks to a partnership between the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Community Distribution Program and local treatment and recovery support organizations, Narcan is now available for free in Stone and Taney Counties.

Narcan is an easily adminis-

tered nasal spray that reverses the effects of opioids. This nasal spray is safe to use for children and adults suspected of overdose. O’Donnell hosted the March streaming special. It featured numerous appearances from Broadway, including Kristin Chenoweth, Gavin Creel and Gloria Estefan. By Daryl Weather, Weather Forecaster I certainly hope everyone got to enjoy the sun and warmth this past week as things have since changed in the Ozarks.

Temperatures may not warm much today with clouds and precipitation likely. We went on

the colder side of guidance with highs in the middle to upper 30s but where the precipitation persist thelongest some location may struggle to warm into the middle 30s. If temperatures can warm enough, we could see the snow mix with and change over to all rain by this afternoon. The pre-

cipitation should then move off to the east by this evening. This system will send a colder air mass into the area as lows drop into the lower 20s tonight into Monday.

Highs are then expected to warm into the lower to middle 40s through much of the week with lows in the middle to upper 20

each night. An upper level disturbance is expected to track across the area and could bring some light rain to the area on Tuesday. There are a few chances for snow showers. However, little to no impacts are expected.

I’ll take a look more into the last part of the week in our Wednesday edition.
