College of the Ozarks celebrates Veterans’ Week with Sunrise Service and Reading of Names POINT LOOKOUT, MO. — College of the Ozarks held two patriotic events to honor Veterans on Nov. 11, 2020. The College was honored to host annual events for students and invite Veterans to experience Patriots Park.

The annual Veterans Day Sunrise Flag Raising Service was held on Nov. 11 at 7 a.m. at the Williams Memorial Chapel flagpole.

The Military Science department and the Bobcat GOLD program organized the service. Officer Candidate Gabe Greco served as the master of ceremonies.

The flag raising detail was accompanied with “Reveille” by Sergeant Major (Retired) Bob Smither after the firing of a 75mm Howitzer cannon by Col. James Schreffler, associate professor of military science at College of the Ozarks and commanding officer, SEE VETERANS’ WEEK, PAGE 13

Flashlight Candy Cane Hunt December 11

Santa’s elves have dropped candy canes all over Eiserman Park, and the Branson Parks & Recreation department needs help to pick them all up during its newest holiday event, the Flashlight Candy Cane Hunt, on Friday evening,

December 11, 2020, at the Branson Community Center.

Families will enjoy hot cocoa and cookies while children decorate candy cane bags and write a letter to Santa. Kids will then go on a hunt in Eiserman Park to pick

up as many candy canes as they can find. Prizes will be handed out to those who find some special candy canes.

The candy cane hunt is offered to kids ages 3 to 12 years old.

There are two sessions to choose from: the first session is from 6-7 p.m., and the second session is from 7-8 p.m. The cost is $5 per person, and you must pre-register online. Everyone is required to bring their own flashlight for the hunt. There might even be some visitors from the North Pole that stop by! Don’t miss out on this fun and unique holiday event!

Toilet paper limits, empty shelves are back as virus surges

A surge of new coronavirus cases in the U.S. is sending people back to stores to stockpile again, leaving shelves bare and forcing retailers to put limits on purchases.

Walmart said Tuesday it’s having trouble keeping up with demand for cleaning supplies in some stores. Supermarket chains Kroger and Publix are limiting how much toilet paper and paper towels shoppers can buy after demand

spiked recently. And Amazon is sold out of most disinfectant wipes and paper towels.

A similar scene played out back in March, when the pandemic first hit and people hunkered down in their homes.

But Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the Consumer Brands Association, formerly the Grocery Manufacturers Association, said he doesn’t expect things to be as bad this go-around since lockdowns are being handled on SEE TOILET PAPER, PAGE 7

Children sometimes get criticism they may not deserve. Many will say that children simply don’t appreciate what they have. Perhaps that is not their fault. Many have not seen examples of thankfulness and have not been encouraged to be thankful.

How can we help children be thankful? First of all, we need to set the example for them. Knowing some of the history involved in the beginning of the holiday can also be helpful. Here is the proclamation of George Washington for Thanksgiving. It would be good for children, who are able, to copy this in their own handwriting.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

It would be well to remind children of the many things people

of that time did not have that we have today, yet they were thankful.

They had no vaccines for smallpox, diphtheria, polio, scarlet fever, and tuberculosis yet they were thankful. They had no computers, plastic, nylon, schools or textbooks such as we have yet they were thankful.

Later, Abraham Lincoln made a similar proclamation that can be found on the internet. Let’s make sure our children know the background of giving thanks to God by our nation.

Note: Tuesday, November 24, I will be telling the story of Squanto for the morning devotional from First Baptist Church in Kimberling City. You can go to You Tube and type in Pat Lamb devotional and get it. It will be at 9:00 a.m. but will remain available to view later. Squanto was only 14 years old when he was captured and taken to Europe. A very good story for children.

New Orleans: Coronavirus nixes Mardi Gras-season parades

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The raucous Mardi Gras parades where riders on elaborate floats toss trinkets to adoring throngs have been canceled in New Orleans because the close-packed crowds could spread the novel coronavirus.

At least for 2021, the pandemic has put an end to the New Orleans Mardi Gras season as it’s long been celebrated, though Mayor LaToya Cantrell has asked the public for safe-celebration suggestions.

City spokesman Beau Tidwell said Tuesday that no parades will roll during the weeks leading up to and including Fat Tuesday because they can’t meet restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus that causes the disease COVID-19.

The cancellation is based largely on a 250-person cap on outdoor crowds, Tidwell said.

“You can’t have traditional parades with that small a group,” he said.

The city’s statement came on a day when diagnosed cases of the coronavirus rose 2,592 statewide, for a total of 207,685. In New Orleans, the day brought 125 new positive tests as the country grapples with a worsening of the outbreak.

All told, the virus is blamed for nearly a quarter-million deaths and over 11 million confirmed infections in the U.S. “We have had nearly 1,000 new cases over the past 10 days,” Tidwell said. He said the city first posted its no-parade decision online Monday afternoon in a list of frequently asked questions about the coronavirus.

The Carnival season and Mardi Gras are New Orleans’ biggest tourist draw.

Two Tulane University professors found, in a study commissioned by parade groups, that the

2020 festival brought the city $145 million, The Times-Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate reported.

February’s Carnival crowds may have been among the reasons New Orleans was hit early and hard by COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said. Not only do parade crowds cram the streets with a mix of tourists and residents, but the season ended Feb. 25, well before people were urged to wear masks.

The next Mardi Gras will be Feb. 16.

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and was traditionally the last chance to use up any fat in the larder before the 40-day austerities of Lent. Since it’s based in religion it can’t be canceled, Mayor LaToya Cantrell has noted.

After a year lost in the woods, dog reunites with owner

ARNOLD, Mo. (AP) — Nearly a year after Walter the dog went missing in suburban St. Louis, apparently wandering the woods behind an industrial park, the golden retriever is back with his owner.

KSDK-TV reports that Kate Olson of New Hampshire was in Arnold, Missouri, visiting relatives last Thanksgiving when Walter slipped out of his collar and took off. Olson stayed in Missouri for weeks searching for the dog and printing and distributing fliers.

She eventually returned to New England but got calls about

sightings. She returned in January to search again. No luck, so she created a “Where’s Walter?”

Facebook page and enlisted animal rescue groups in the search.

Finally, on Friday, Olson got the call she had been waiting for. A group based in Belleville, Illinois, called Lost Paws Trapping was able to capture Walter. Olson immediately got on a plane and was reunited with Walter Friday night.

“He has been such a little love,” Olson said. “He is the same sweet boy he was before and maybe even sweeter because he has missed getting loved on!”

A lost dog’s journey across the Canadian border and back FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — A lost dog’s journey across the Canadian border and back was complicated by coronavirus restrictions limiting movement from a town on one side of the St. John River to a Maine town on the other.

Diamond, a German shepherd, escaped from her home in New Brunswick on Saturday and crossed a border bridge into Fort Kent, Maine, where coronavirus restrictions prevented her caretakers from following, the Bangor Daily News reported.

The owner, Paryse Michaud, was at her daughter’s hockey tournament several hours away when she got the news that the 17-month-old shepherd had escaped from their home in Clair,

New Brunswick. Michaud’s father was looking after the dog when she escaped, the newspaper reported.

Michaud posted a plea for help on Facebook, saying the dog had crossed the border.

Over the next six hours, Michaud received updates from people in Maine tracking the dog, the newspaper reported. A friend found the dog in a garage and coordinated with other friends on the Canadian side for a handoff.

Finally, Michaud got a text with a photo of the dog and Annik Sirois, a family friend, in a car on the Canadian side of the border.

Diamond was united with Michaud and her family on Sunday after being handed off at a border station, the newspaper reported.

‘Dueling dinosaurs’ fossils donated to North Carolina museum RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The fossil skeletons of two dinosaurs intertwined in what looks like a final death match have been donated to a North Carolina museum.

The nonprofit organization Friends of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences said in a statement Tuesday that it acquired the fossilized animals with private funds. The skeletons will be gifted to the Raleigh museum’s vertebrate paleontology collection.

Tips for cooking (and saving) a smaller Thanksgiving feast

By KATIE WORKMAN If you’re planning a smaller Thanksgiving gathering this year because of social distancing, you don’t have to give up the turkey, stuffing, pie and other

traditional fare.

Thanksgiving feasts have typically been tailored for a crowd: big birds, large casseroles, and so on. Your favorite recipes might serve 10 or more. But from turkey

breasts to muffin-tin pies, there are ways to adapt the classics for a smaller crew, with less expense and potential for waste.

“Strangely, in the past, this time of year seemed challenging be-

cause we were trying to feed Many families already branch out to include main dishes other than turkey for Thanksgiving, and this could be a good year to have fun with alternatives. But if tradition beckons, as it does for most, here are some tips.

THE TURKEY Most birds sold for Thanksgiving dinners in U.S. supermarkets have traditionally been in the 16-pound range, with some much larger. That size turkey will serve 12 to 16 people. As a rule, when buying turkey, aim for about 1 pound per person when purchasing a whole bird; when cooking a smaller bird, especially if you want leftovers, aim for about 1 ½ pounds per person.

So a 10-pound turkey might by OK for a group of 8, feeding your gang generously. But if your group is much smaller, think about buying just a turkey breast, say, and a couple of drumsticks.

THE SIDES First, you might serve fewer of them. Miller Ffrench says one of her favorite things about Thanksgiving has been “all the large variety of dishes, which just seems ridiculously decadent” now.

Instead of a table overflowing with food this year, she will spotlight each family member’s favorite dish. And that’s all.

“Just one kind of cranberry, not two. Just squash, and not sweet potatoes as well. I hope we will take the time to relish each bite more, really focus on the individual flavors of each food, not the collective mounded plate,” she says.

“These past months have taught me to truly savor things more, figuratively and literally.”

HALVING RECIPES Many recipes can be halved: roasted butternut squash, mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts are

all good examples.

If you have a recipe for stuffing that calls for a 9-by-13-inch pan and feeds 10-12, you can cut it in half and bake it in a 9-inch-square pan. Reduce the cooking time by about 25 percent: When it’s browned and crispy on top and hot throughout, it’s done. Same thing for sweet potato casserole or green bean casserole.

PIES Chef Maya-Camille Broussard, owner of Justice of the Pies bakery in Chicago, has some ideas for that most important category of Thanksgiving desserts: pies.

What if you’d like more than one kind of pie, but multiple 9-inch pies feel excessive?

Broussard suggests making galettes, mini pies in a muffin pan, or even whoopie pies in your favorite flavors. She also has small Le Creuset pots that she uses all the time to make individual pies.

“You may use a biscuit cutter to make small crust circles,” she says. Or turn a coffee mug or a glass upside down, dip the lip in flour, and use it to cut out a circle of dough.

If you decide to make one of those smaller pies or muffin-tin pies, remember to reduce the cooking time. You might need to just rely on your eyes and nose for how long to bake them. Look for a browned crust, a slightly bubbling interior (if it’s a fruit pie), or a mostly firm filling (if it’s a pumpkin custard pie, for instance).

Broussard also believes in freezing pies.

“Pies usually have a high moisture retention and they freeze incredibly well,” she says. “Pies are typically good in the fridge for one week and in the freezer for one to two months.”

‘Ball of energy’ McCaffrey out to rev up Nebraska offense

“That man,” Robinson said, “is a ball of energy.”

Robinson lived with McCaffrey

when they first arrived at Nebraska last year, and he quickly discovered the Cornhuskers’ new starting quarterback doesn’t know how to dial it down. There’s always pep in his step, a slap on the back for everyone on the sideline, a can-do attitude regardless of the situation.

“I feel like he has that fire in him to get other guys going and

I think that’s going to be key for our offense,” Robinson said. “He’s got that fire, that competitive edge where we’re going to start seeing good things happen.”

The Huskers (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten) beat Penn State 30-23 last Saturday for their first win since Nov. 23, 2019. McCaffrey’s starting debut was overshadowed by the defense, which made two big stops late in the game after the offense spent most of the second half sputtering.

The move from Adrian Martinez to McCaffrey wasn’t a huge surprise, though. The little brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey had flashed playmaking ability in multiple roles last year and coach Scott Frost knew his offense was better with Luke McCaffrey on the field.

Frost said in the offseason the plan was for McCaffrey to focus on being a quarterback rather than a receiver this season. The preseason competition between Martinez and McCaffrey was neckand-neck, and Frost said he would have been comfortable with either one as the starter, but Martinez separated himself because of his incumbency.

No decision has been made, but the consensus among many experts in the U.S. and globally is that health care workers should be first, said Sema Sgaier of the Surgo Foundation, a nonprofit group working on vaccine allocation issues.

An expert panel advising the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also considering giving high priority to workers in

essential industries, people with certain medical conditions and people age 65 and older.

Once a vaccine gets a green light from the Food and Drug Administration, the panel will look at clinical trial data on side effects and how people of various ages, ethnicities and health statuses responded. That will determine the panel’s recommendations to the CDC on how to prioritize shots.

McCaffrey said Martinez has been supportive. Martinez, who didn’t play against Penn State, had started all 23 of his career games and is in his second year as a team captain.

By Arnie Stapelton It was during the Green Bay Packers’ resurgence under Brett Favre and Reggie White that the late defensive guru Fritz Shurmur dropped one of his most enduring maxims.

Growing tired of all the nitpicking over a closer-than-expected victory, Shurmur interrupted the interrogation at Lambeau Field to exclaim, “I’d hate to think we’ve gotten to the point where we’re judging the quality of wins around

here now.”

Nick Chubb was a toddler back then, but it’s a point that’s just as pertinent now for a perennially downtrodden franchise as it was then for a resurgent one riding the wave of Super Bowl success.

After a touchback, the Lions started their final drive at their 25 with 16 seconds and three timeouts left.

Matt Stafford hit Quintez Cephus for a 10-yard gain, and as the rookie receiver fought for more yards, the clock ran down down to 9 seconds on the television broadcast before the Lions called their first timeout.

Dana McKenzie blew his whistle and raised his left hand.

During the timeout, referee Alex Kemp instructed the clock operator to put 10 seconds on the clock, then quickly corrected himself to say 12 seconds.

The next play, a deep incompletion to Cephus, drained six seconds, but a roughing-the-passer penalty on Chase Young put the ball at the 50-yard line.

Thunderstorms, tornadoes and meteors...oh my!

By Daryl Weather, Weather Forecaster We have had some pretty wild weather and meteors since our last edition.

Let’s start with Saturday evening. Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings were issued for various parts of the Ozarks including us. The Osage Beach area seemed to get hit the hardest and several damage reports come in from that area.

The National Weather Service in Springfield ended up issuing nine tornado warnings and 21 thunderstorm warnings Saturday evening.

On Friday they had warned that severe storms were possible for Saturday afternoon into the evening hours. If you follow the Branson News & Weather Page, you would see that we were posting this as well on Friday and we covered it Saturday until our area was clear that night.

Now we go to Monday overnight which for some photographers was a great time to capture some great footage from the Leonid Meteor Shower. We had a “moonless” night which was great for photographers.

Up to 15 meteors per hour fell across the sky. I was asked by my grand-

daughter, why and what caused us to not see a moon. I think a lot of us know that answer, but for those who don’t, maybe this will clear that up.

A moonless night is, as you suspect, a night in which the moon is not visible in the sky. This happens once per month, when the moon is near the sun. Due to the proximity of the moon and the sun, the moon is the smallest sliver possible, and therefore not a full moon.

Also there are 8 phases of the moon. The new moon, waxing crescent moon, first quarter moon, waxing gibbous moon, full moon, waning gibbous moon, third quarter

moon, waning crescent. During the new moon, no moon is visible or sometimes the disk of the moon is faintly visible.

Now, to look at our upcoming weather. Mostly sunny skies through today and tomorrow. Clouds start to work their way back into the picture

by Friday, and Sunday we take a big dip in temps and rain returns to the area.

Our daily highs as you see in the graph slowly work their way into the 70s before Sunday. Overnight lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s.
