Opening ceremony remembers their sacrifice; welcomes veterans home

By David Stoltz The traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall served as a fitting backdrop Thursday morning as Veterans Week began in Branson with the opening ceremony at Welk Resort Center.

Guest speaker and Vietnam veteran Bob Sarver, public relations director for Branson Veterans of America 913, noted that the wall’s 58,000-plus names inscribed in stone carry many personal stories. “But we will never hear them,” he said. “They are all heroes in my mind, and I salute each and every one of them.”

West 76 Country Boulevard, on November 11, Veterans Day. Tippin’s debut single, “You’ve Got to Stand for Something” became an anthem for American soldiers during the Gulf War and established him as a true patriot.

By David Stoltz “It wasn’t until I joined the Branson Veterans of America 913 was I able to begin the healing process and let go of my feelings, and grow as a proud veteran.” Vietnam veteran Bob Sarver, public relations director for BVA 913 (formerly Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 913), was the keynote speaker at Thursday’s opening Veterans Week ceremony at Welk Resort Center.

The event included a wreath-laying ceremony, Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem sung by Ambrus Presley, rifle volley by BVA 913, and “Taps” played by SGM (Ret.) Bob Smither.

Sarver, who was selected as the BVA chapter’s “Member of the Year” in June, said he has taught his grandchildren to “always thank a veteran when they see one.”

“We, as Vietnam veterans, should take the lead in educating our young people about the many sacrifices our veterans as well as their families have made in defense of this great country,” he said.

Noting the discourteous and shameful treatment Vietnam veterans received upon their return home, Sarver said, “Let no other generation of veterans be received the way we were when we returned home.”

Sarver concluded his talk by paying tribute to America’s veterans, both past and present, living and deceased, from all wars and conflicts. “Shake their hand and welcome them home, and let them know we appreciated their service to our country.”

If you want to see the parade, plan ahead, get there early

By David Stoltz, Staff Writer Make your plans now to attend Branson’s 88th Annual Veterans Day parade!

Although the parade begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, preparations will begin at midnight as some streets will be blocked off early.

Commercial Street will be shut down at midnight, so there will be no parking or access to downtown Commercial Street after midnight. Also, the south end of the Bass Pro’s parking lot will be shut down for parking or traffic at midnight.

The 53-unit parade will begin on Sycamore Street and go southbound to Long Street, then turn northward on Branson Landing Boulevard, then south on Commercial, east on College, and then finish up near the starting point on Sycamore Street.

Parade units will come in on Veterans Boulevard and enter the staging area via Price Street.

“My favorite veteran is my dad, Marvin R. LaValla, a World War II Veteran,” said Branson’s Marlyce Stockinger. “When I was young, I would ask my dad ‘What did you do in the service?’ His response was very quiet and simple, that he built roads. After my dad passed and I was talking to my uncles, the truth came out—he actually dug ditches and pushed bodies into those ditches, then buried them.

My dad suffered tremendously from PTSD. He kept that part of his life locked deep in his heart.

Later he became the Commander of the American Legion, and it gave him the opportunity to talk with others about his feelings.”

Another local reader, Letha Dixon, agreed that her father was her favorite veteran.

“My dad, Otto Ward, was in the Vietnam War. When he left, he was an SP5” said Dixon.

“My dad taught me to stand up every time there was a flag flown. He gave me a sense of pride for America and family.

He always tried to make life easier for his children and his family, and he definitely loved his grandchildren more than life itself.”

Catherine Evers of Branson also remembers her favorite veteran. Said Evers, “My dad, Ralph Evers, was in the Korean War, as a map maker in the Army. My dad had stories to tell. He missed Heartbreak Hill where many of his friends died.”

Dear Branson Community, Congratulations to Branson Police Officer Darold Donathan for being named the winner of a state-wide Local Government Hero Award. I hope everyone is excited to see all of the veterans coming into town this week to participate in Veterans Homecoming Week 2020. The festivities run from November 5-11. You can find all the planned events on the Branson Chamber of Commerce website. While honoring veterans is a year-round cultural value in Branson, it is nice to place additional focus on these great citizens during the Veterans Day period.

It was so good to see the Branson Community Tree Lighting this week next to the Ferris Wheel that marks the start of our Christmas season.

In case you had not heard, we have a 7,200 square-foot ice skating rink coming to Branson in mid-November right next to the Ferris Wheel. At nearly 72

feet x 100 feet, it is the same size as the rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

The rink is scheduled to be open from about mid-Novem-

ber through New Year’s. This will be another fun Christmas season option for our citizens and guests. For more Christmas season activities, see the Chamber’s excellent website.

Speaking of the Christmas season, our public works team conducted its “Snow Exercise” this week to prepare for winter weather on our local roads.

City plow drivers practiced driving snow routes and safety procedures during this training event. You can read more about how the public works department prepares for winter weather, salts our roads, and keeps our streets clear during snow and ice events on the

city’s website. Thank you, public works team, for all you do to help us navigate the winter weather.

If you want to hang onto summer activities a bit longer, head out to the Branson RecPlex to watch the Triple Crown Fastpitch competition, November 7-8. You can find a schedule and more information on the Chamber’s website.

Rally planned November 8 at Faith & Wisdom Church Submitted to Branson Globe Dr. Cecil Todd will lead a rally entitled “Lord, Heal Our Land” at Faith & Wisdom Church on Sunday, November 8 at 10:30 a.m. Faith & Wisdom Church is located at 3950 Green Mountain Drive in Branson. The rally is free and open to the public.

According to Pastor Carol McSpadden of Faith & Wisdom Church, “the purpose of the special service is to call America to repentance and prayer, beginning with our church, and to help bring healing to our beloved country.” Special honor and recognition will be given to all veterans who attend the service.

Todd, founder and president of Revival Fires Ministry in

Branson West, has been in ministry for more than 70 years. According to a news release, Todd has been asked to provide Bibles for new recruits into the armed services. So far, 3,700 Bibles have been provided to recruits at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and another 5,000 have gone to recruits at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Ten thousand more Bibles are currently being printed for Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois.

“Everyone attending this special service at Branson’s Faith & Wisdom Church on Sunday, November 8 will be given the opportunity to help with the Bible effort for these new recruits,” said Todd.

Todd will be joined for the service by gospel recording artist Lydia Abbot.

“My father-in-law, Joseph Anthony Eugenio, who passed away at the age of 103, served as

a medic in the Army during World War II,” explained Eugenio.

“He received many ribbons and medals, including a Bronze Star.

Being a medic, he was in the front lines. He knew God had his hand.”

Frequent Branson visitor Doug Holtzmann also praises his

father-in-law. “Dave, my fatherin-law, was in the Army,” said Holtzmann. “He’s a very special man, kind to everyone.”

For many, the favorite veteran is their spouse or significant other.

Said reader Lanita Ray, “My partner, Jim Madison, was a flight

medic in the Air Force during Vietnam. He is still a very proud veteran despite his PTSD and nightmares.”

Michael Wayne Douglas is special to many, especially his wife, Lee Douglas.

“He was a U.S. Marine and served 1968 to 1970. Michael

Go Gators: Deputies remove alligator from school playground OKEECHOBEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida school named after Everglades National Park experienced a taste of what the wetlands has to offer when a small alligator appeared on the school’s playground.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies found the alligator Wednesday at Everglades Elementary School, according to a department Facebook post.

The school’s mascot is an alliga-

tor clad in orange, which is a bit different from the 4-foot-6-inch

(1.4-meter) alligator the deputies captured.

Deputies later released the gator in the Nubbin Slough River, but

not before affectionately naming it “Everglades.”

“So many of my family are veterans, I can’t choose a favorite,” said Merry. “We have a room we call the room of heroes with their pictures, celebrating their service.”

Hot spring chicken: 3 cited for Yellowstone culinary caper

Roberts and Dallas Roberts, of West Valley City, Utah, were ordered to serve two days in jail and pay $540 in fines and fees for the Aug. 7, incident, according to court documents.

Eric Romriell, of Idaho Falls, paid $1,250 in fines and fees. All three are banned from Yellowstone while serving two years of unsupervised probation.

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Branson entertainer Tim Hadler, star of the Hank Williams Revisited Show, will host a special CD release party Sunday to benefit area veterans.

The inspirational CD, “The Great I Am”, features 11 gospel songs written or inspired by Leon Faddis, a veteran of the Second World War. Faddis, 94, is a volunteer at GUMI Camp USA, a healing retreat for American Veterans, For years Faddis suffered from PTSD, as he blamed himself for the loss of over 700 men during the war, when a Kamikaze plane flew into the USS Franklin. A spotter on the USS Alaska, one of several ships assigned to protect the Franklin, Faddis felt responsible for the tragedy.

Faddis relayed that story to Hadler, founder of GUMI Camp USA, and the result was the song “Scream”, a track off of the CD. along with 19 other

Each attendee will receive a copy of the CD. A love offering will be taken, with

Apart but together: tips for a cozier Zoom Thanksgiving

By Katie Workman We all know Thanksgiving is going to look different this year.

If you’re lucky, you might live where the weather will still be nice and you have space to create an outdoor Thanksgiving with appropriate social distancing.

The rest of us are preparing for the fact that an in-person Thanksgiving with all of our loved ones is unlikely because of pandemic safety concerns. For us, 2020 will be the year of the Zoom Thanksgiving.

So how do we make that feel OK? From shared menus to organized games and discussions, some planning and coordination can go a long way.

“The idea is to still feel unified in some way,” says Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson.

CAPTURING THE VIEW For once, electronic devices at the table are something to celebrate. Think about how you will position your laptop or other device so those dining with you remotely can see as many people at your table as possible. This may involve changing up the seating arrangements, putting more people on one side of the table than usual.

Your computer or phone might sit on a buffet, side table or the table itself; move it around as the evening goes on.

Michigan couple with 14 sons welcome their first daughter LAKEVIEW, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan couple whose large family attracted attention by growing to include 14 sons has welcomed their first daughter nearly three decades after the birth of their first child.

Kateri Schwandt gave birth Thursday to Maggie Jayne, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces (3.4 kilograms) and entered a world filled with 14 older brothers.

Jay Schwandt said he and his wife, both 45, “are overjoyed and beyond excited to add Maggie Jayne to our family.”

“This year has been memorable in so many ways, for so many reasons, but Maggie is the greatest gift we could ever imagine,” he told the Detroit Free Press following his daughter’s birth at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in

Grand Rapids.

The Schwandts have been featured for years in local and national news as their family has grown.

The couple have a livestreaming program called “14 Outdoorsmen” that may now need a name change.

Think about coordinating a pre-Thanksgiving non-perishable food drop-off to the local pantry.

Everyone can share in the good feelings that come with making sure others have enough to eat.

And especially in these difficult times, psychologists say that finding things for which to feel grateful can lift your mood. A week or so before the holiday, ask everyone to write down one or more things they feel thankful for, large or small. Put them in a bowl or in an online chat, and during or after the meal take turns reading your own or others.
