UNFORGETTABLE TASTE
A guide to all things coffee, for coffee lovers.
WORLD-CLASS QUALITY OF NESPRESSO

Nespresso coffee masters demand adherence to the highest standards, from coffee farming and coffee crafting to coffee consumption.

COFFEE FARMING
COFFEE CRAFTING
COFFEE CONSUMPTION
COFFEE FARMING
We source some of the world’s finest coffees grown in countries, also known as the Terroir, along the Equator where the growing conditions are most favorable. THE COFFEE BELT

THE TERROIR
The altitude at which the coffee grows can impact the development of sugars and the caffeine content of the beans. The climate of a region can impact the level of rainfall, which in turn affects the flavor The quality and type of soil can determine the mineral and water availability for the coffee plants.

THE TWO SPECIES OF COFFEE

Nespresso curates coffee varieties with both Arabica and Robusta — a practice yielding unique coffee excellence.
Arabica has a lower caffeine content than the Robusta. Arabica has a sweeter, smoother taste to it. Robusta generally brings in sharper notes that distinguish it from Arabica and make it a great complement to blend with Arabica coffees.

HARVESTING
Coffee is either hand picked or mechanically harvested. Hand picking yields the finest-quality coffee cherries and the majority of Nespresso cherries are hand picked then dried and hulled to reveal the precious green coffee beans inside.

COFFEE CRAFTING
All green coffee bean batches are sampled to ensure they meet physical and sensory standards. A sample of green coffee beans arrives at our production centers in Europe for inspection before the main batch is shipped. The beans undergo several inspections, including physical checks and sensory (aroma and taste) evaluations.

QUALITY CONTROL ROASTING
We roast coffee to develop flavor, color and aromas.

Before Roasting After Roasting
The intensity of a coffee is defined by its degree of roasting, its body and its bitterness. In addition, the intensity reflects the concentration of the coffee. Higher intensity coffees are “stronger” while lower intensity coffees are “milder.” It does not refer to the amount of caffeine found in the coffee.
CAFFEINE CONTENT
A raw coffee bean contains the most caffeine it will ever have. Through the roasting process, caffeine is released from the bean. Typically darker roast coffee beans have less caffeine than light roasts.

How much caffeine is in each Nespresso capsule?
The caffeine content per brewed espresso capsule will vary between approximately 55 and 65 mg. The lungo blends contain 20% more coffee per capsule; therefore, they have slightly higher caffeine content, about 77-89 mg.
This variation depends mainly on the green coffee (Arabica vs. Robusta), the degree of roasting and to a lesser extent, the coffee origin. Our decaffeinated blends contain roughly 0.005 mg of caffeine. There is no correlation between the assigned “intensity” and caffeine content.
BLENDING TECHNIQUES
Green-Coffee Blending
Different green coffee beans are combined before roasting. The result is a uniform roast of the two different coffees.
Split-Roast Blending
Different green coffee beans are roasted separately and combined after roasting. The result is a differentiated yet complementary coffee roast.
ESPRESSO
40 ml/1.35 oz
Approximately 55-65 mg of caffeine
LUNGO
110 ml/ 3.75 oz
Approximately 77-89 mg of caffeine
ESPRESSO DECAFFEINATO
40 ml/1.35 oz
Less than 0.005 mg of caffeine
LUNGO DECAFFEINATO
110 ml/ 3.75 oz
Less than 0.008 mg of caffeine
GRINDING
Grind size impacts the flow time during preparation, affecting the final end-cup taste and intensity. By controlling the grind, we determine how much resistance there is to the water flowing through the capsule.
COFFEE CONSUMPTION
FLAVOR
Flavor is a combination of two things:
1. Taste — what you perceive with your tongue
2. Aromas — what you perceive with your nose

ENCAPSULATION EXTRACTION
We encapsulate the coffee to protect it from the air, allowing us to maintain the taste, lock in freshness and prevent oxidation.
Nespresso brews coffee with high pressure, the ultimate way to brew coffee. This creates precious crema and elicits the finest flavors and aromas.

COFFEE FUN FACTS

COFFEE IS A FRUIT
Despite it being called a ‘bean’, coffee is actually a fruit. The ‘beans’ grow on a bush and are found in the centre of a berry, known as a coffee cherry.
BRAZIL GROWS THE MOST COFFEE IN THE WORLD
It’s widely known that Brazil is one of the biggest coffee hotspots of the world, but did you know it’s responsible for around a third of all the coffee in the world? Brazil is the number one coffee producer, followed by Vietnam and Colombia.
DECAF DOESN’T MEAN NO CAFFEINE
For a coffee to be classed as decaf, it needs to have less than 0.3% caffeine.
COFFEE GOES BACK A REALLY LONG WAY
Coffee is thought to date back to 800 A.D., where it was discovered by 9th century goat herders. It was said that they noticed their goats eating the plant and afterwards it appeared like they were ‘dancing’. Fascinated by the results, the goat herder tried them himself and discovered that it made him excitable too.
