Welcome to Brandon As we sit working on this issue, the fan is blowing like crazy as we take a huge hit on the temperature scale and we’re mulling over this months articles.

Ferry Tales has just taken place and we have a photographic report this month on pages 24 and 25, we also have to find a spot next edition for Shoestring’s excellent event for Halloween.

Brandon Town Council Report Heritage Centre

Christmas Fayre

New trustees are in place and it is hoped to reopen the Brandon Heritage Centre in March 2017. We do, however, need volunteers to assist in manning the Centre during opening hours.

This has still to be agreed but obviously it is dependent on the number of people willing to undertake the task. If you are interested in being involved in the project, please contact me on 01842 811844 for further information.

Date for this year’s Christmas Fayre is 4th December from 4pm-6pm. Bookings are now being taken for a free stall so do not leave it too late to secure your place. Again, further details from the office.

Flag Pole

The Lode The town council are presently liaising with Suffolk County Council to ascertain a way forward in dealing with the current problem of the contaminated water/silt at The Lode.

The planning application for the flag pole has been registered at Forest Heath District Council planning and hopefully will be determined by the end of October. I have been approached by a Vexillologist from the Flag Institute & Heraldry Committee, who has indicated our flag may be eligible to be added to their registry. Exciting news for Brandon!

As an interim measure, the water course is to be fenced off with 1.2m high timber posts, wire netting and a top rail. This will give us the opportunity to look at various options that can be pursued to create a safe and pleasant area for both residents and visitors.

Glade Primary School We’re back, and we’re raring to go! Over the last 6 years, Glade Primary School has doubled in size and we now have 10 classes of children eagerly taking part in their lessons.

We are currently in plans to add additional classes to allow us to grow to meet the needs of a growing Brandon and we hope to have builders on site in January.

This term, the whole school are involved in a large scale art project, with pupils studying the work of Andy Warhol and his influence on the art world. Children are in the process of painting their own versions of Warhol’s famous work, ‘Marilyn’. The Glade version will be painted rather than printed, using the children’s faces as the inspiration. The final work will be put on display in the school hall.

CHRONICLES OF BRANDON AT WAR

Francis Owen was always destined for good things, being one of those handpicked few from Brandon to receive a scholarship at Thetford Grammar School. He stood out as an auctioneer at Thetford, while serving as a director of the Thetford, Norfolk and Suffolk Building Society. Sundays were the only day he did not work, leaving that day to teach at the Baptist Sunday school, on the High Street. So there was shock this month when, at the age of thirty, he died. Francis was no victim of warfare but instead tuberculosis, an illness that consumed him for the past year.

Such was his standing in the community that on the day of his funeral business was suspended, with all shops closing early, houses along his funeral route closing their blinds and even soldiers on leave attended. His loss was as great as any Brandon lad’s death in the trenches.

There was more anxiety of smoke, which could ascended over the town. haystack just off London about thirty tons of hay,

Talking of flames, Alfred English, the High Street tailor, has been fined because his wall mounted gas burner, which illuminates his office at night, was throwing light across the street during a black out. These prosecutions have become common, and now the police come down hard against those who do not tow the line. I cannot overstate the fear of some Brandonians who believe they may be the next victim of a night time Zeppelin attack. I am sure it is no coincidence our Parish Council have just taken out insurance to cover losses from air-raids.

So you see a lot can happen in the space of a few weeks. The lads serving at the front know this more than most. In a split second a poor decision can be their last, but the consequence of poor decisions is not confined to those fighting. You see our old narrow bridge has, as long as we can remember, been accustomed to the relatively slow pace of pedestrians, horses and carts. Although when a cart weighed down with timber comes through you would do well to get out of its way, some are huge and take a lot of stopping. That advice now applies to the many military motor vehicles, but it seems some people travelling through do not share the locals’ wisdom and they still try to squeeze through. Just this month a woman in a motorcycle sidecar came off worse following a collision with a military truck. Fortunately the impact was not enough to seriously damage either machine, but the woman was thrown across the bridge. Remarkably she suffered only cuts and bruises, although eyewitnesses reckoned she came close to being catapulted over the parapet and down into the river below.

Brandon in Bloom The “In Bloom” group have several ideas for 2017 and to set these in place are holding a public meeting at Brandon House Hotel on October 4th at 7pm.

The invite is for all Brandon residents and traders as the ideas include container displays for shops, offices and all homes, best kept garden and of course any idea that comes up on the night. There will also be a discussion and report back on the “Victoria Avenue” project discussed at the last meeting and it is hoped to have some artistic impressions for the project.

The 2 trees reported on last month have not yet been started upon. I am informed Gary is still waiting clearance for the group to undertake removal and tidy up the 2 trees and the surrounding areas. Long gone are the days of a group such as ours just getting their hands dirty. Sometimes the officialdom gets in the way but it is indicative of modern life

and something we have to learn to live and work with.

Bruce Weetman made an enquiry about planters at the entrance to Princes Close. The residents are now looking at bulb planting, but both ideas are something you and the group can undertake. We still have a little funding for some daffodils, and whilst we have missed the best price possible from Rachel at P&R Gardens due to ordering schedules we can obtain from other sources if you and your neighbours would like to plant up your own patch. For containers we need to contact FHDC for permission but it is something ‘In Bloom’ as a group, can help you with.

New Parish Priest On Wednesday 7th September, I was licensed to St.Peter’s Church as the Parish Priest for Brandon with Wangford. I am new to the area so have been asked to write a short piece introducing myself.

My name is Sharron Coburn, married to Dennis for 25 years with two grown up children, Jake and Jessica (Jessie). I grew up on the outskirts of Liverpool and have lived in Kent and Bristol before we moved to Barningham here in Suffolk.

If you haven’t already done so, its time to start your compost heap. It’s vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Composting is free, easy to make and good for the environment as it offers a natural alternative to chemical fertilisers.

for composting to occur. A simple rule of thumb is to use one-third nitrogen and two-thirds carbon materials. In winter carbon materials are often in short supply, however examples of carbon materials that can be added to the compost heap include hay, straw and sawdust, cardboard and shredded paper, and wood ash. Carbon-rich materials will also neutralise ammonia odours.

Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, annual weeds (but not the roots) hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal.

Different materials will decompose at different rates, but they will all break down eventually. If you want to speed up the composting process, chop the larger material into small pieces, run a lawn mover over leaves.

Regular turning of the compost heap is essential.

Compost activator (Garotta) can be used every time material is added to the heap to speed up the composting process. Adding lime to the compost heap will deter fruit flies and also reduce unpleasant odours.

Avoid putting grass clippings or leaves on the compost heap in thick layers. They will mat together and reduce aeration, which will slow the composting process. A soggy compost pile is usually caused by a combination of factors, poor aeration, too much moisture, and an imbalance between carbon-rich and nitrogenrich materials. Adding carbon rich materials will absorb some of the excess moisture in your compost and help restore the balance needed

Never add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost, as these will reappear with vengeance next year.

Instead throw these onto a bonfire.

Also, do not compost meat, bones or fish scraps (they will attract pests) or perennial weeds (they will spread with the compost). Do not include pet manures in compost that will be used on vegetable plots. Banana peel, peach peel and orange rinds may contain pesticide residue and should also be kept out of the compost.

Walking Down Memory Lane Brandon, Suffolk

For this month’s walk we shall park on George Street car park. Unfortunately this is an area of town that was mainly heath or farm and we are limited for pictures. From the car park turn right towards the Fire Station, (photo 1 is opposite the old vets) and head towards Thetford Road. At the junction of Thetford Road (opposite the old Duke of Wellington) look right for scene of photo 2, then turn left toward town. As we reach Bury Road, on your right is the current site of Astor Court which was Lingwood’s fur factory before it moved to the site of Tesco on London Road. Photo 3, taken in the 1980s, shows a wholesaler ‘Cabot Supplies’ on Thetford Road at the time Astor Court was built. The sign on the side of the building gives an indication of what Cabot’s used to be. As you pass Astor Ct turn right into Lode Street and walk to junction of White Hart Lane and Gas House Drove. Turn right into Gas House and pass what are currently Brandon’s largest houses.

After you pass Wishing Well Close and just before the site of the old gas works turn right into and up Webb’s Row, which takes you onto Thetford Road. As you come out of the Row, opposite is now 2 shops the one on the right was once the Coach and Horses pub and directly behind you at No.99 is a private house which was another hostelry “The Dukes Head”. Turn left along Thetford Rd. We pass Mounts Pit Lane, the former lime quarry we have (photo 4). Continue along and as we round the bend (photo 5) is the site of another old pub which is now a private residence, 1st we had The Fox and Hounds, which was knocked down and became The Forest pub. Turn right up into Lingheath another long uphill climb, past the old waterworks on your right until you reach Green Road. Opposite is the Killingworth’s farm whose land stretched down that hill before the London overspill of the Birds Estate was created in the 1970’s. Turn right and follow Green Road at the end of Green Road when you meet Bury Road you have two options - turn left and walk to the Country Park (photo 6) for cake and a drink before returning to this point, or turn right into Bury Road and head back into town to finish. Heading down Bury Road (photo 7) on your right, before the housing estate was built, was Heath House (photo 8) where Heathcote House now stands. For 100 years it belonged to Mr William Rought who owned the huge fur factory on George Street. Which brings us neatly back to our start.

WILD ABOUT BRANDON I am fortunate enough to have Roman snails in my garden. I believe there are several places in the fields around Brandon where they can be found in abundance! Lets take a closer look at these fabulous creatures.

Latin name Helix Pomatia, the Roman snail is also called the Burgundy snail, the ‘edible’ snail or more famously (if you’re in France) Escargot. But before you start melting a pan of garlic butter, please be aware that this species is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

They are also quite rare and I think we are privileged to have them here. We should do our best to protect them and ensure their survival. If you are partial to a mollusc or two, it should be noted that common garden snails are just as edible, so nibble on those instead!

Lack of fossil evidence means it is uncertain if these snails are native or not. It is thought that the Romans may have introduced them as a source of food.

With a shell up to 5cm across, this is Britain’s largest snail. The shell is very rounded, creamy white in colour with pale brown bands.

Like most terrestrial snail species, Roman snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have male and female organs in one collective ‘genital apparatus’. The benefits of this are mainly that snails move VERY slowly and can’t travel distances very quickly.

So the chances of meeting a partner are pretty hit and miss. Add to the equation that not only would it have to bump into another snail.. but one of the opposite sex to enable any kind of reproduction, It could take each snail years to ‘start a family’ and the species would inevitably die out! So these cunning little critters can mate and produce young with ANY other snail from the same species! Isn’t nature amazing?!

1st Brandon Scout Group We would firstly like to thank everyone who supported our fundraising efforts at the Weeting Steam Rally and our Quiz Night. We were able to purchase a stacking system for our store room & increased our camping equipment. A special thank you to Lianne Spooner who organised the Quiz night for us.

We have been busy over the summer break.

Our very untidy Store Room has been completely re-organised. We managed to fill a skip with rubbish as well as a few trips to the dump. Now everything has been checked & stored away ready for our next camping Season. Thank you again to Lianne & some of her managers who helped us fill the skip.

Now we are back it is going to be a busy couple of months for us. The cubs are still celebrating their centenary. We are going out for a boat trip & plan a camp towards the end of October. The Beavers have had an influx of new members. Plans for outings, visits to

St Peter’s Church, Night hikes to mention a few things. Scouts have recently completed their Survival Challenge. One thing they had to do was build a shelter & sleep in it, in the rain!

We are still looking to increase our Leadership Team. As long as you are 18 there is no upper age limit. Have a good sense of humour & have a commitment to Scouting. We offer full training & support. If you would like further information please contact me on the number below. We have a lovely group of boys & girls who actively keep us on our toes.

Our HQ is at present going through further refurbishments which will not deter us from going about our business. We will be at the annual Fireworks with our BBQ. If you see us out & about please come & say hello.

Brandon & District Photographic Club At the start of each club year Brandon & District Photographic Club hold an exhibition of photographic prints (see left hand page).

This is a golden opportunity for our club members to show off their photographic skills to a wider audience. You will not only be able to spend time wandering round the displays looking at the prints on show but also judge for yourself which one you think is outstanding, by filling in one of the voting slips. You can then relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake while watching a rolling slide show of other images, taken over the last year or so, by our members.

A macro lens may cost almost as much as your camera but there are other ways for you to test the water beforehand, such as buying a macro filter or some tubes for under £30 and you will still get some really fantastic results.

There will be plenty of members there to assist you and answer any questions you may have about the club and about photography.

There will be information available about joining the club as well as a detailed calendar for you to browse through and see what we have in store for members this year. Two of the main topics we will be concentrating on are: converting colour to black & white and learning more about macro photography.

BRANDON 'FERRY TALES' It’s 1pm on a Sunday afternoon in mid September and Brandon is normally deserted, but not today. There are lots of families and couples wandering around the High Street and as far down as the Bridge Hotel. There, the garden is buzzing and it looks a little like wash day as tens of items gently blow in the breeze. The alleyway from the High Street to The Orchard is alive with the sounds of children laughing as they play games of old and as I stroll through I’m invited to pin the tail on the donkey. In the Orchard there are woolen creatures just hanging around in the specially knitted “Woollen Wood”. I can’t hang around long as I have to get to Tilly’s for cake and to listen to the poetry then come back at 3pm I’m told and listen to Brandon’s folk duo.

Oh, I will if the “Menagerie“ don’t capture me.

I watch the show with my mouth open as I’m treated to a show unlike anything seen before in town and it didn’t stop there and as I took off, back to the Bridge Hotel to screen print my bag, the cast of Shoestring were out in force, nuns, wartime evacuees with luggage labels tied to them, parlour maids and the ferryman were all out, letting their secret past be known. If Brandon had a “Jack “ like the London East End I wouldn’t have been surprised to come across him scurrying home after the dead.

You maybe wouldn’t believe it unless, of course, you were there. Brandon, tourists and the arts! No, that sleepy place can’t put on a bit of class, but they did. Sunday 18th was Brandon’s Ferry Tales, a project put on with funding from The Arts Council and very well directed by Leigh Driver and the Market Place team. Imagination was the key word, and that is where my report ends. You cannot imagine the scene so I’m leaving it to our local photographers to try and give you a taste of Ferry Tales 2017.

Brandon Town Youth FC SEASON UNDERWAY! The 2016/17 season is well under way and with a new season, we welcome some new faces to the club. Saturday Soccer’s new coach is Ben Hollis who has just moved to the area and takes charge of our school year 1 Saturday football club and will have his two sons in the club. Next we welcome Paul Rose who has taken charge of our newly formed U10 girls’ team; Paul has two children at the club and will be coaching his daughter in the U10s. Our next newbie is Gary Cater who had a taste of coaching last season and has joined on a more permanent basis coaching the U11 girls which will include his daughter. Our U11 lad’s team has also got a new manager, we welcome Lee Philpott to the club. Lee doesn’t have a child in the team but has been a supporter of the club for many years with his son going through all age groups. The U13 lad’s new manager is Jason Benham who also has his son in the team and will be assisted

by Brett Scriviner as coach. We wish our new coaches a very warm welcome and the best of luck for the coming season.

GIRLS GOALS Girls Goals has been formed with a Suffolk FA grant to support the fantastic name the club has within female football locally. The new club has been an incredible success attracting well over twenty girls from school years 3 to 6 helping to ensure we can carry on supporting girl’s football as we have done for the past fifteen years. SATURDAY SOCCER With youth being the backbone of the club, our Saturday Soccer club is high on our list of priorities. The current U7, U8 and U9 squads are a testament to the hard work that has gone into developing these sides with all age groups boasting two teams! The emphasis is on fun and friendly sessions with both boys and girls involved every Saturday morning.

Breckland Cats Protection Tabby cat Jack was a stray who was found in very poor condition. This was due to the fact that he had not been neutered, had been bitten by another cat, and a large abscess had formed by his tail. Once in our care he was put on medication and eventually he made a full recovery. He has also now been neutered, vaccinated against Feline Enteritis, Cat Flu and Feline Leukaemia, microchipped and flea’d and wormed.

Jack is a lovely friendly boy and he would prefer to be in a home where there are no other cats or dogs or young children. After his past life, he needs a quiet loving forever home where he will be happy to be curl up on a lap and made a fuss of. He is just 2 years old.

Lady is a black and white lost soul looking for a human companion who can give her a kind, calm and understanding home. She has been in the same home for all of her 8 years, but due to changes in her owners circumstances, she has come into our care. She is a little nervous at first, but once she gets to know you her loving nature will shine through, and she loves to play. She has been micro chipped, neutered, vaccinated and flea’d and wormed.
