By Carol Beddingfield, Executive Director Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce Bargain shoppers will arrive by the thousands for the 690 mile shopping bonanza on August 7, 8, 9, and 10th better known as the World’s Longest Yard Sale. This event has been named one of the top 10 events in Alabama as well as one of the top 20 events in the South by the Southeastern Tourism Society. According to Dennis Keim, “It is aptly titled, The World’s Longest Yard Sale!” Every year individuals clean out their closets and stake out their front yards along the Highway 127 corridor stretching from Addison, Michigan to Gadsden, Alabama. They band together as communities, in groups or as individuals, and over a four-day weekend they welcome the onslaught of visitors from the North, South, East, and West. It is a mutual exchange of cultures with a common goal: to look, buy and sell! As you drive the country roads, you will hear a collection of dialects, be privy to incredible stories related to the individuals and the items they sell and see a plethora of items that only your grandmother could love. Most importantly, I think most come to see the unusual and socialize. It is Americana at its best.” I would totally agree with Mr. Keim. Our route along Lookout Mountain Parkway has been called by Reader’s Digest one of America’s most scenic drives. Interest in our tourist attractions will be a huge draw for shoppers to spend the night, eat in our local restaurants as well as shop with our local merchants. The World’s Longest Yard Sale is a great example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together for the common good of the community. Please put your biggest smile on to welcome all of the visitors to our area. After all, you are the first impression of Fort Payne. Think safety as you travel the yard sale route. The yard sale is a huge boost for our economy. The slogan for the yard sale, I drove, I stopped, I shopped till I dropped, really sums up the event.
