Authorities are warning folks about an on-going telephone scam involving the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. According to Sheriff Jimmy Harris, people are receiving calls from individuals claiming to be an Investigator of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The names used so far are real investigators names.
The Marshall County Bits and Bridles 4-H Horse Club is hosting an open house for youth ages 9-18. Those interested in Horses are invited to attend on May 31, 2014 from 1-3 p.m. at 4-B Ranch located at 1985 Georgia Mountain Road in Guntersville. Enrollment process for 4H, barn etiquette, demonstrations, and supplemental training and riding options available will be provided.
The caller will give the person an amount of money which can be paid by a Postal money order or Green dot Visa to a predetermined location. This scam is used often, but is widespread in DeKalb County now. “This is not the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office calling,” noted Harris. “The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office never solicits money
for any reason. You should never send money to anyone that you do not initiate contact with.” Harris added that if someone is contacted by the people operating this telephone scam, that they should collect as much information as possible and contact law enforcement to report the incident. “These individuals do not work for the DeKalb
County Sheriff’s Office and no response is needed to these calls,” added Sheriff Harris. “Do not send any money anytime without checking things out first.” Folks are encouraged to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office if a call has been received or if there is any information about this phone scam to report The phone number is Misty Chapman, instructor of biology at Northeast 256-845-3801.
