The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Working on Fire (WOF) Programme in the Free State assisted in fighting and successfully suppressing 66 fires that destroyed close to 10,000 hectares of vegetation in the Free State in July. This is an increase compared to 46 fires put out in June when the Winter Fire Season kicked off in the province. A total of 18 teams were dispatched 75 times to assist Fire Protection Associations, Municipalities, and Nature Conservation Agencies with suppression efforts. The busiest team in July was the Thaba Nchu, which was deployed 16 times. The Eastern Free State was the busiest, with the Bethlehem and Clarens teams deployed seven times, Golden Gate six times, Harrismith five times, and Qwa Qwa as well as Vrede were deployed twice. In between fighting these fires, the teams were also busy with prevention work in the form of fuel reduction. More than 3000 hectares were burned during controlled burns and fire breaks. These include a two week project where five Working on Fire Teams camped in the Lejweleputswa District in Masilonyana Local Municipality and assisted the Imperani Fire Protection Association with fire breaks. In the Eastern Free State, the Vrede and Harrismith teams assisted the Eastern Free State FPA with a 60km fire break along the N3. Working on Fire in the Free State is armed with 570 firefighters placed in 25 bases across various regions of the province. They are strategically placed to be able to render firefighting support to partners across the province. “We are committed to the vision of WOF in making a sustainable difference in our environment and people’s lives. The energy experts, stepping forward to help solve the country's energy crisis, collectively have more than five and half thousand years of experience. Trade union, Solidarity, on Thursday last week, sent its list of 300 power experts to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Eskom CEO André de Ruyter. Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann emphasised that Eskom must be stabilised as soon as possible, and these specialists have the knowledge and skills, to make this happen. “This list contains some of the country’s leading experts in the field and we are astonished, not only by the wealth of expertise and knowledge of these individuals offer but also by their willingness and eagerness to tackle South Africa’s energy crisis,” he said. Hermann said the current crisis at Eskom is too extensive for a single party, including the state, to solve on its own. “About seventy percent of the experts on the list are involved in generation, while sixteen percent can be involved in distribution, six percent in transmission, and around eight percent of the experts offer commercial management and other skills,” stated Hermann media@veldbrandmediasa.co.za

A 64 year old man is accused of stabbing a 53 year old man and then stabbing his own daughter and teen grandchildren in Verkeerdevlei in the Free State on Tuesday.According to Free State police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, the man used a pair of sheep shears to stab the 53 year old man. Thakeng added:" The suspect fled from the scene and the victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. It is alleged that he then held his 36 year old daughter and two grandchildren, aged 13 and 15, hostage for more than four hours in a three roomed shack, and that he used the same shears to stab them. A Tactical Response Team, led by Captain Junior Santi, eventually rescued them.
