On the picture top left is a mechanic helping to replace the tires that got stolen, on the top right picture is an identikit of one of the suspects believed to be involved in the robbery. VERKEERDEVLEI: A 59-year-old truck driver was surprised by six men, one of them armed with a pistol. They took six tires from the truck on Tuesday, 16 February 2021 at about 02:30 that morning in Kareedam, Verkeerdevlei on N1 road. The truck driver alleged that was too far from the next town and wanted to urinate, so he pulled off to the side of the road and stopped the truck next to the road on the Verkeerdevlei to the direction of the Winburg route. He further alleged he felt a heavy pat

on his shoulder. He turned around and was surprised by six unknown black males, one already pointing him with a pistol. It is alleged that they took him to the tall grass next to the road where he was covered with his own duvet. They then proceeded to take off the tires from the truck and left the scene. The load on the truck was left untouched. It was further discovered that another truck coming from the Bloemfontein direction, loaded the tires and drove…(continue on page 4)

DA concerned about the water condition of Masilonyana recidents

Drivers urged to not make secluded stops next to the road… (from page 2)…back in the Bloemfontein direction. Other items robbed from the truck driver is his cellphone, wallet containing money and the truck’s mini fridge. The truck is a huge horse and trailer. The truck driver reported that they did not physically harm him are caused any injuries to him. The investigation officer in this case, Sgt Mokone Malenga of Verkeerdevlei SAPS Detective Unit managed to obtain an identikit of one of the suspects with the assistance of forensic experts on the scene. All suspects who are currently at large are only described to be dark in complexion. Any person who might have information about these criminals are requested to contact Sgt Malenga on 073 843 7155. Truck drivers using N1 and N5 must stop this tendency of stopping at secluded spots outside towns as it’s not safe for them and the loads on the trucks. “They must rather use truck stops allocated for them to rest and to use the safe toilet facilities.”

WINBURG: The DA laid criminal charges against the mayor and municipal manager of Masilonyana Municipality last month in terms of section 151(1)(i) and (j) of the National Water Act. The Act criminalizes the unlawful and intentional or negligent act or omission which polluted or is likely to pollute a water resource and detrimentally affects a water resource. Since the 28th of Dec 2019, the drinking water provided to the

community of Winburg is green (In the pictures). The DA has investigated and discovered that the local dams which feed the community’s water purification plant are so contaminated with sewage from the town that no amount of chemicals can clean it. The municipality was still continuing to provide the community with this water although they issued a warning that such water should not be consumed. The…(continue on page 4)

DA acted on water safety concern (from page 3)…DA is concerned that this water was still being used for bathing as well as washing of dishes and clothes which poses a severe health and safety risk for the community. The municipality has a constitutional duty to provide clean, drinkable, and safe water to the residents. Sicknesses or death that might result from the consumption of such water will be the fault of the municipality. The mayor, Steven Koalane, and municipal manager, Mr. Pule

Tsekedi, as the administrative and political head of the council, needs to take responsibility and ensure that our constitutional rights are upheld. They were putting lives in danger through their inability to govern and were breaking the law. The DA wrote to the MEC for CoGTA, and the relevant ministers of the national government to seek urgent intervention in this regard.

Meester

(Ps. 145:9-16, Die Boodskap) ~ Wilna Botha

Lemon Verbena Gin Lollies

Strawberry Ice cream INGREDIENTS 125ml water 125ml castor sugar 60ml lemon verbena leaves 625ml tonic water 125ml gin METHOD In a medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar and verbena. Stir on a medium heat until the sugar dissolves, boil for one minute. Leave to chill completely. Once chilled, add the tonic water and gin. Stir well. Strain into lolly moulds and freeze till firm. Serve straight out the freezer

While gin may be the national spirit of England, the spirit originated in Holland. The English discovered “Genever” while fighting the Dutch War of Independence in the 17th century and brought the spirit back with them. The London-style gin we’re familiar with now would be born 150 years later.

Focus on Online learning

Online, but not isolated: personal connection key to academic success Amid the explosion in online or distance learning offerings at both basic, higher and further education levels following the 2020 Covid lockdowns, education experts have urged parents and prospective students to carefully consider an institution and its programmes before signing up for this mode of learning. “It is absolutely crucial that one looks at not only the registration and accreditation status of an institution, but also investigate its ability to provide the highest quality of academic excellence,” says Colin Northmore, Principal at Evolve Online School, a brand of ADvTECH, Africa’s leading private education provider. “A recent survey by The Independent Institute of Education has confirmed that the key element to successful learning during lockdown, was the ability of an institution to keep students connected, engaged and motivated,” he says. Northmore says many online or distance learning providers merely provide a paperbehind-glass style curriculum, which makes it extremely difficult for students, especially young ones, to get deeply involved in and excited about their learning journey. “As many parents experienced during lockdown, some schools made the mistake of trying to run a synchronous timetable by trying to follow the same schedule they would have if the students had been attending live lessons. Proper online schooling does not work this way,

which is why parents must carefully evaluate their options.” Being an online learner is like home-schooling with one significant difference, he says. “Online students following excellent programmes will gradually become more and more capable of learning without any adult assistance at home. It is a feature of an excellent online school that we provide a process for children to learn the skills they need to be independent learners,” he says. “This process includes self-pacing, time management and the ability to schedule their day. It also includes teaching children to work collaboratively with peers in remote locations. No parent should choose online learning for their children without expecting the learning process to be delightfully different.” Northmore says a good online school that focuses on the holistic development of children must have a strong focus on foundational, social and emotional learning skills, and sufficient personal attention and interaction with educators, mentors and coaches. Elbie Liebenberg, MD of Mindsharp, agrees regarding the importance of human engagement and support as part of the online learning journey. “Online learning is much harder and motivation is impacted when the student is left to their own devices, only to submit the occasional assignment to a generic e-mail address,” she says. “For online learning to be successful and enjoyable, the human

Pet’s Corner

touch, engagement, feedback and support are very important factors.” Liebenberg says there are a host of professional development platforms online which are similar in terms of their offering, so prospective students must seek out those programmes where they don’t simply receive modules that they have to wade through on their own, which increases the likelihood of bailing out before the successful completion of a programme due to feelings of boredom and isolation. “If you really want to make a success of your career and build upon your existing skills, you need to dive into your further learning. This is most successfully facilitated if an institution provides personal support throughout the study journey as opposed to only automated feedback. “Prospective students must also enquire about the efficiency of the technology and the logistics of an offering, as well as whether they will have access to qualified tutors to step in and assist them should the need arise.” “Online learning can be a great option for many, for a host of reasons, including safety concerns, the personality of the student, the personal choice of parents, and geographical considerations. However a good institution must . take an holistic approach to the child’s academic and personal development, to ensure a successful and fulfilling academic journey.”

ALERT! Rabies on the rise!

There have been 33 confirmed cases of rabies in animals since the beginning of the year, according to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. The department also reported that a 10-year-old boy from KwaZulu-Natal died from the virus. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects all mammals, and is transmissible from animals to humans. The virus is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals through licks, scratches and bites. Rabies occurs in domestic and wild animals across South Africa. People are encouraged not to touch or pick up unknown or stray animals, especially dogs and cats. South African law requires pet owners to vaccinate their cats and dogs against Rabies at 12 weeks, as well as a booster before 12 months. Thereafter, they should receive doses yearly or every third year depending on the specific vaccine manufacturer.

Is now the time to buy or rent? “I have been saving for some time now with a view to buy my own property. However, with all the upheavals of the last year I’m wondering whether buying is still the right option and whether I should not continue renting. Any advice?” Owning property can be very beneficial over a long period and property generally is a worthy investment for your money. That said, it is not always the answer for everyone and the rental market remains a good choice for many when considering their finances, work situation and family size. Currently, it is fair to say that it is a buyer’s market. Interest rates are low and also weigh in favour of buying. But remember that buying property includes additional costs that you will need to cover such as bond registration costs, transfer costs, transfer duty to the Receiver, insurance premiums and even the costs of renovating or upgrading your new property (if necessary). All these costs can add up to a substantial amount for the first-time buyer. Likewise, interest rates, although low now, can fluctuate over time and you need to have the financial stability to accommodate such fluctuations and the other associated costs with owning and maintaining a property. In comparison, renting can be a far cheaper and, in some ways, simpler and more flexible option for many. That said, by renting you are helping the landlord pay off his mortgage and increasing the value of his investment and not yours. You are also at the mercy of your rental agreement in respect of what you can and cannot do with the property, and you could even be given notice to vacate the property should the landlord decide to sell (subject to what the rental agreement says, of course). So clearly there are pros and cons to buying and renting. It is therefore useful to consider the following factors when deciding on which option may be better for you: How long do you plan to live in the same place? Compare the costs of renting vs buying. What is your view on your financial position going forward? What will your space needs be in a few years? (family, pets, cars etc.). What are the risks for you in buying or renting? Although there could be many more factors to consider, these considerations should give you a good idea of whether buying or renting is the correct route for you.

Bron: TLU SA
