Covid-19 cases in the Free State increase PROVINCIAL: The cumulative number of Covid19 cases reported in the Free State continues to rise rapidly, standing at 110 296 as at Monday (21st June). The number of active cases stood at 10 266. Mangaung solely had 157 new cases of covid 19 reported. The province is in the top five when it comes to a high infection rate. The number of cases continues to climb despite the strong call by government for people to avoid larger gatherings, together with imposing stricter lockdown regulations.

The Department of Health has expressed concern about the mounting pressure on hospitals. The death toll in the Free State recently stood at 4 662, while the number of recoveries was at 95 572. The overall number of cases in South Africa on Monday had reached 1 832 479. With that being said, the vaccination process in the country is progressing at a slow pace. The teachers recently received their jab and are advised to continue accepting the vaccination as it will protect them from the virus.

Two men accused of murder of Free State farm manager, Brendin Horner, released on bail FREE STATE: The two men accused of murdering Free State farm manager, Brendin Horner, in October last year have been released on bail after it emerged they could not be linked through DNA analysis. Sekwetje Mahlamba, 32, and Sekola Matlaletsa, 44, appeared in the Senekal Magistrate's Court recently, where they applied for bail based on the new facts. According to the National Prosecuting Authority the court accepted the new facts, which included the following: 1. Mahlamba had claimed the blood was from an animal he had slaughtered for a traditional ceremony. However, the State said it had witness testimony that Mahlamba had not attended the ceremony. 2. The bloodstained clothes, Horner's hat, a knife found at the scene, and the rope used to strangle the 21-year-old farm manager were taken for forensic analysis. It has now emerged that none of the DNA matches either of the

accused, nor does the blood on Mahlamba's clothes match that of Horner. Lastly,3. DNA samples taken from Horner's bakkie could also not be linked to the two men accused of murdering him on a farm in Paul Roux. The State made the admission about the samples after Matlaletsa's legal aid attorney questioned why the police had taken DNA swabs of the accused on 15 October, when it was previously relayed to court that all evidence for forensic testing had been submitted on 5 October. During their first bail application, the State alleged that a private investigator had taken samples from Horner's bakkie, which was found around 13km from the crime scene, parked next to the N5 that cuts across Senekal, Paul Roux and Bethlehem. These samples were taken to a private but accredited laboratory and were already analysed. The analysis results revealed the DNA profiles of three different men were present in the

samples collected from the inside and outside of the bakkie. Following the outcome of the analysis, it was decided to take Mahlamba and Matlaletsa's DNA to see if there was a match. The results showed neither of the men could be linked to Horner's bakkie, as the one DNA profile was not a match, and the other swab was defective, so the test came back inconclusive. While the DNA results have dealt a big blow to the State's case and resulted in both accused being granted bail, NPA argued that the charges would not be withdrawn against Mahlamba and Matlaletsa as DNA was not the only evidence that they were relying on. According to NPA spokesperson Phaladi Shuping the State applied for the cancellation of Matlaletsa's bail, but the court dismissed that application and released him. Both men were granted bail of R5 000 each. The matter has been postponed to 23 August for a pre-trial in the high court.

Prison visits suspended nationwide as Covid-19 numbers soar NATIONAL: Correctional Services spokesperson Sechaba Mphahlele said visits had been suspended in a bid to try to curb the spread of Covid-19. He said the measure enabled the department to continue protecting both officials and inmates from the pandemic. “We have been implementing restrictions and adhering to all regulations to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19,” he said. Mphahlele said that as of June 20, the total number of active cases in their facilities added up to 256, that is 223 officials and 33 inmates. En vier sommer soms so by jouself nagmaal as jy brood eet. Sommer so by jouself, of saam met jou gesin. Dalk sommer ook as jy en 'n vriend tydens etenstyd 'n broodjie nuttig. Wat 'n eenvoudige maaltyd is 'n toebroodjie nie, en hoe eenvoudig is die evangelie ook nie, selfs 'n kind kan dit verstaan. Neem daardie Brood wat lewe gee en maak Hom jou eie. Dis elke dag vars. Geniet dit. ~ Willem Botha

Overlooked & Under-appreciated! Oh boy, the large bakkie-based segment in South Africa is a tough market to play in. The Toyota Fortuner rules the roost while the likes of the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport all desperately cling onto the coattails of the Fortuner’s success. Take nothing away from the Toyota, it is a very accomplished product which dazzles consumers with its storied badge and an expansive footprint across the country. But I suspect that the light gleams too brightly as many are blinded to the breadths of talent in the rest of the segment. Take the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for example. It undercuts both the Toyota and Ford by more than R100 000 in their most expensive specification; is not found wanting in any particular area and comes from a manufacturer that arguably has an equally impressive reputation for reliability and trustworthiness. I unfortunately can’t account for consumers’ shopping behaviours so don’t expect any solid answers as to why we are a stubborn, single-minded bunch. But what I can tell you is why I think the updated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a cut above of the rest and at the very least, worth a visit to the showroom. Mitsubishi South Africa introduced the refreshed Pajero Sport late last year with the introduction of the range-topping Exceed model as well. You’ll notice the new face which Mitsubishi calls their ‘Dynamic Shield’ design, which brings into line with the stablemates like the Triton, Eclipse Cross and ASX. At the rear, the tweaked tail lights have been shortened and feature a new LED signature. Handsome looks aside, the updated Pajero Sport also offers a raft of interior updates. Although the design and layout remain the same, you now get an updated eight-inch touchscreen which supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone air-conditioning including rear passenger controls, plus a leather-clad multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth and voice control. On the safety front, each of the Pajero Sport’s 7 passengers are catered for in terms of an airbag. Our range-topping Exceed 4×4 test unit also features a

sliding sunroof, Mitsubishi Remote Control connectivity, and an electronic tailgate with kick sensors. So, you’re certainly not lacking in terms of tech, style and amenities but one area where the Pajero Sport does fall slightly short is in the drivetrain department. You only have one option for both the engine and gearbox to choose from which is a 2.4l MIVEC turbo diesel engine, producing 133kW and 430Nm and linked to an eightspeed automatic transmission. And while it does a sufficient job of lugging about its large frame, there were instances where power waned and it struggled to keep up with the flow of traffic. But the majority of the time, accelerating and cruising at the national speed limit was a breeze and overall noise, vibration and harshness was low. Mitsubishi claims an average fuel consumption of 8.1l/100 although I managed around the 8.7l/100 which is quite respectable. While I never had the opportunity to take our test unit off the beaten track, I do have experience with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system and I can assure you that you will find very few obstacles in your path. For the average family, the Pajero Sport possesses more than enough capabilities to meet your families adventures and sum. With pricing ranging from R624 995 for the base 4×2 model and extending all the way to R704 995 for the top of the range Exceed model, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport makes a compelling case for itself. For similar outlay, you can get into a Toyota Fortuner equipped with the updated 2.8-litre engine, however, you only get that model in 4×2 guise and an additional R70 000 is needed to hop into the base 4×4 variant with that engine. So the updated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is truly the smart money in this segment, and it’s worth noting that it recently claimed the title of best large SUV/Crossover in CAR Magazine’s annual Top 12 Best Buys. Need I say more? Just go and visit one of their dealerships so you can see for yourself.
