N1 BLOEMFONTEIN/ WINBURG: The N1 between Bloemfontein and Winburg in the Free State remains closed as a result of violent protests in the Winburg area on Monday 19 April 2021. Scores of traffic officials were re-routing motorists driving along the national road, the N1. This after several official warnings from law enforcement agencies, including the police. Irate residents in the Winburg area embarked on protests last week over a lack of quality and basic service delivery in that area. Issues the residents are up in arms over, include the lack of water supply which has allegedly been experienced for years now. Reporters on the scene understand the situation is still volatile at key points in that area where officials are stationed to reroute traffic on Monday morning. The protests at Winburg started on Thursday 15 April. It was previously reported on the

unrest when the N1 and the Makeleketla Road were barricaded with burning tyres, stones, and the branches of the trees early Friday. The protesters’ discontent comes after a decision by the provincial government that an upcoming visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa will no longer be to Winburg. The statement has indicated that the new venue for the presidential visit will be at Botshabelo near Bloemfontein. The protesters intended to utter their grievances during this visit. Also previously reported was the reason the venue of the presidential visit has been changed, is alleged because the community members planned to use the event as a platform to protest. Residents have since said they won't stop protesting until the venue change has been cancelled. They say they want to talk to the president about the challenges they face daily.

SAPS to deploy more task teams across the province FREE STATE: Additional task teams need to be deployed in the Free State as a matter of urgency to act as a buffer against the rising crime rate, specifically to combat the high incidence of livestock theft along the Lesotho border. Jakkals le Roux, chairperson of Free State Agriculture’s (FSA) rural safety committee, said in a recent statement that farming communities in the province were highly concerned about the lack of capacity of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) stock theft units. FSA had repeatedly raised the matter with the office of the Free State MEC for police, roads and transport, Sam Mashinini, and

the office of the provincial commissioner of the SAPS, but to no avail. “The only conclusion we can therefore draw is that stock theft is not a real priority for the police and the minister, and that there is also no real will to address it,” Le Roux added. After Mashinini signed a cooperation memorandum with FSA in October 2020, the expectation was that the authorities would investigate and address police involvement in crimes such as stock theft and corruption as a matter of urgency. Tommy Esterhuyse, FSA vice-president, said only one task team, based in Bethlehem, had, however, been deployed since. “We have, for

instance, received information regarding alleged police corruption pertaining to crimes on agricultural land and especially livestock theft from 14 towns’ farming communities during the past few months. “The SAPS’ lethargy to establish structures and communication lines in all the districts of the Free State is of great concern,” he added. Meanwhile, Francois Wilken, FSA president, told Farmer’s Weekly that the organisation and its members remained committed to a strong and positive relationship with the SAPS in the province. (By Annelie Coleman, April 14, 2021 – Farmers Weekly)

SOUTH AFRICA: Elderly South Africans are now able to register for the second phase of the country's vaccine program. Citizens who turn 60 or older this year can submit their details on the COVID-19 electronic vaccination data system. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said that this was in preparation for the next phase of the vaccine rollout program. “You must have your ID and medical aid card if you have one when you register. When you register, it’s very important that you put the correct cellphone number, the address where you live and the correct medical aid number, if you have one. Remember that registration does not guarantee that you will be vaccinated immediately.” Mkhize said that there would be no difference between private and public sector patients. The Health Department, meanwhile, reiterated its commitment that patients' data would not be shared with any third party. The department's acting chief operating officer, Milani Wolmarans: "This is not only a registration platform but it also allows us to communicate via SMS so that we can tell you which vaccination site to go to, what time you need to be at the site and we can provide with information about the vaccination programme if we have a mobile number that we can communicate with." Visit vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za for more details.

Do you know who your local ward councillor is? It’s important for all South Africans to know their ward councillor because they are the link between the municipality and the community they serve. People can also take their problems to the ward councillor and he/she should deal with these in an appropriate way What is a local councillor? A local councillor is a person who provides political leadership in a ward of a municipality. It can be a metropolitan municipality, district municipality or local municipality. A local councillor can be elected as an independent candidate or represent a political party. They occupy an office for a period of five years in line with the local government elections. The ward councillor is elected by citizens living in the ward where he/she is standing for elections. What is the role of a councillor? A ward councillor is expected to make sure that the concerns raised by people in his/her ward are represented in council. He/she must also ensure that the ward committee exists and that people in the ward participate in local government. The councillor must report back regularly through ward meetings and help the community in identifying needs and priority areas of development, which will help the municipality’s planning processes. Types of councillors A ward councillor ensures that the

interests of people in a specific ward are represented in council. He/she reports on council activities on a regular basis to the ward to strengthen the relationship with community. A proportional representative councillor is a member of a political party and is elected through the party lists. He/she is accountable to the party. An independent councillor does not belong to a political party and is accountable to the people who have elected him/her to represent their interests. Issues you can raise with your councillor: Water supply Illegal electricity connections Housing Refuse collection Faulty traffic lights Dilapidated infrastructure Grass that needs cutting Any other services offered by the municipality. Complaints against your councillor When you have a complaint against your councillor, you can approach the chief whip’s office of the political party he or she belongs to. If it is an independent councillor, you can approach or send a petition to the council’s office. How can I find out who my councillor is? If you want to know who your local councillor is, SMS your ID number to 32245. The SMS will cost you R1.

Proper Identification If the unthinkable happens and your little guy or gal gets lost — youngsters in particular are prone to dashing out the door — having proper identification is the key to a happy ending. Start with the basics: a safe collar, and a tag that contains all of your contact information. In addition to an ID tag, microchipping your pet is advisable, because there's always the chance a collar will fall off. The microchip, an electronic device about the size and shape of a grain of rice, is implanted under your pet's skin and can be read by a scanner that pulls up your identification information. A combination of these forms of identification will go a long way to reuniting you and your beloved pet, but only if you keep your contact information up-to-date. Be sure to change your information on file with the microchip if you have a change in address or phone number.

One Pan Turmeric Rice And Beans DESCRIPTION A delicious vegan dish that could be used as a main meal or as a side dish to to a meaty meal. Either way, it tastes delicious and cooks in under 30 minutes. INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons sunflower/olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 onions, diced 3/4 cup rice (I used Basmati Rice) 2 teaspoons turmeric 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon salt 2 bay leaves 2 1/2 cups water (for the rice) and 1/2 cup water (for the spinach – added later) 1 cup chopped spinach 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 2 tablespoons lemon juice or lime juice freshly ground black pepper Optional extras: Add raisins Add nuts Add sliced spring onions Add Diced tomato INSTRUCTIONS In a medium sized pan, heat the oil and cook the onions until beautifully caramelised. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes or so. Add the rice, turmeric, cumin, ground coriander, salt, bay leaves and 2 1/2 cups water. Allow to simmer until most of the water has reduced and the rice is soft. Add the spinach and the remaining 1/2 cup water, cover the pan with a lid or plate and simmer ever so gently for 2-3 minutes to allow the spinach to wilt. Now mix the spinach through the rice to combine well. Stir in the red kidney beans and the lime/lemon juice. Add some freshly cracked black pepper as well as salt if needed. Throw on any or all of the optional extras and enjoy!

Wat ‘n foto!

Wat raas en huil julle so? “Wat raas en huil julle so?” (Mark. 5:39) In ander vertalings klink die vers só: Vir wat gaan julle so te kere? (Die Boodskap) Why all this confusion? Why are you crying? (GNB) Why are you making a commotion and weeping?

Daar is in totaal 12 231 bale aangebied, waarvan 93.1% verkoop is. Die koper was Standard Wool SA .

Stacking up the new Kia Rio against its older sibling

Is the updated fourth generation Kia Rio an upgrade from its predecessor? We recently got to spend some time with the new Rio where we were able to stack it up to its preceding sibling that arguably catalysed a rebirth for the brand not only in Mzansi but globally too. Although Kia, the largest manufacturer and exporter of vehicles from South Korea, has been in existence since 1944, our local market only got to experience what the Seoul based marque had to offer in 1997. The first generation Rio was introduced two years later, just before the turn of the century but was ridiculed for its poor build quality and driving experience. In more recent generations, the Rio nameplate has evolved and improved over the years and has turned out to be a strong local contender that has helped carry the brand, specifically in the past decade. The third generation, according to sales numbers, was the most successful of its kind averaging just under half a million units per annum since its inception in 2011. It is one of the cars that led to the upward sales trend of the brand and elevated the perception to consumers with improvements in styling, safety and comfort. The most recent fourth generation, originally released in 2017 has not fared as well, with annual sales numbers just above half that of its predecessor. Even with the mid-cycle refresh from 2020, the restyled offering can’t seem to generate the same momentum from before. So why exactly is that? The third generation set the benchmark high. It was an affordable, quirky, funky and young-at-heart subcompact car that was easily accessible and comfortable to drive. Perfectly suited and priced for yuppies or students. Its stylish exterior and comfortable cabin could be paired with a selection of petrol and diesel engines with an assortment of trims according to budget, although the local market was only afforded with petrol motors. Our time was spent with the more modestly priced but less kitted-out 1.4 LS variant mated to a conventional automatic 6-speed gearbox. From the

outside, the updated range has undergone extremely minor changes with a reprofiled bumper and updated grille. It is still distinguishable and easily recognisable as a Rio from the modish design legacy from the preceding third generation shape. This is a good thing, it is one of the better looking contenders in the B-hatchback segment but the styling has the same issue as the rest of the car. Kia seems to have rested on their laurels with no significant progress from its predecessor. Naturally, the new generation includes well integrated technology and creature comforts that were not obtainable a decade ago. The facelifted derivatives all feature a suitably sized 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Standard USB charging ports can be found in the front and the back of the cabin, while bluetooth connectivity and streaming is available through the infotainment display which reverberates via 4 speakers and 2 tweeters around the cabin, even on the base models. In comparison to its predecessor, the quality and solid interior materials make for a welcome improvement while retaining its durable nature for years to come. That being said, there is an abundance of hard plastic on the LS model, but subtle leather details are standard on the more expensive derivatives. The dashboard and drivers dials are sensibly laid out and intuitive to use, but seem to be a simplified evolution to its predecessor’s interior which I prefer, particularly the scoped speedometer and rev-counter. Despite some vacant buttons reserved for higher end units, the interior was still a comfortable place to spend time in, with both drivers and passengers furnished with upscale spaciousness and amenities. While the new platform that the fourth generation Rio is built upon is sharper and more rigid in handling, it comes at the compromise of additional weight coming in at as much as 50 kilograms. This does not sound like very much but the 1.4-litre motor with a maximum power output of 73kW (6kW

less than before) can often feel lethargic when paired with the limited air pressure at Johannesburg altitude making it feel less spritely than its predecessor. The conventional 6-speed automatic gearbox trundles around comfortably with the occasional jerk and does the job without much complaint. I would personally recommend the manual option with the same number of cogs which makes the motor feel alive and controlled. The brakes are sharp and direct with immediate response from pedal input like before but the lower end derivatives have interestingly enough done away with rear discs from the previous generation and now incorporates drum brakes. The fuel economy on the Rio for combined driving is rated just below 8l/100km while we saw just over that amount from our travels. A number which is simply too high if it is competing with the smaller displaced turbocharged variants from Ford and VW. The salvation of this funky looking Kia offering is its price tag, with our model priced at just under R310 000 with a fair amount of standard equipment, it is competitively positioned in one of the more cut throat segments in our local car market. Regardless of price, I would opt for a derivative with the projection headlights which provide more night time visibility than the outdated halogen reflector counterparts. Having driven the previous generation Rio while I was still a student and epitomising the typical young driver that it was intended for, I had an excitement of experiencing what the latest offering was all about. While it feels much the same as before, inadvertently supplementing my nostalgia, I can’t help but feel that it was not enough of a step forward living in the grand shadow cast by its older sibling. However, this is still a great car, one that is comfortable and familiar for just about anyone of your younger family members or immediate friends to become acquainted with and start blasting their music through.
