Attacks on trucks near Winburg, one driver killed  Corné van Noordwyk WINBURG: In the last week two truck drivers were robbed and attacked near Winburg on the N1. The one driver was woken by someone who forcefully broke the left window of the truck. The unknown person pointed a gun at him and demanded his cellphone and money. The gunman stole R1,500 in cash, two Nokia cellphones and 12 bottles of perfume. The driver was instructed to hand over the wheel lock nuts and both his hands and feet were tied with cable ties. He was laid at the back of the bed and threatened that if he made any move he would be killed. The alleged robber then stole 10 tires from the truck. The victim managed to loosen himself and, after another trucker stopped to help, they called the police. In the recent attack, also on the N1 near Winburg, the truck driver was robbed and killed after he stopped his truck to rest, the tires of his truck were also stolen. “We suspect

that the driver that got killed, was trying to stop the robbers.” Despite the call for help from the owners and drivers for the government to assist on these ongoing attacks against truck drivers, we have seen numerous attacks targeted at truck drivers especially during night hours. In both incidents the tires of the trucks and valuables were stolen, so it seems that trucks are targeted especially for that. Cases of robbery and murder has been open with the police. Police are urging witnesses who has information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to please contact your nearest police station. One of these owners said: “The recent incident where trucks was targeted, and torched, seems to have been triggered by owners employing foreigners as drivers and local drivers then protest against it, but the recent incidents seems to be pure criminal activities and the police should do something immediately to stop this. We can’t allow the loss of lives!”
