For Those Made To

Founding a Different Way of Learning

Growing up in Kathmandu, Mr. Surendra Subedi struggled in College and education enthusiast told him that traditional education was his only path. He was so frustrated by the limitations of the system that he sought out new ways to learn. He traveled abroad, gaining experiences that helped shape his understanding of education. He realized that true learning goes beyond textbooks and exams; it’s about practical knowledge and real-world application.

In 2022, he founded Model Institute of Technology, driven by the belief that education should inspire innovation and creativity. Since its inception, MIT has grown to become one of Nepal’s leading institutions, known for its pioneering approach to education and its commitment to developing future leaders through world class American Degree.

Subedi vision was simple: to create a learning environment that empowers students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and lead with integrity. If traditional education limits potential, surely a model based on exploration, experience, and engagement would be the key to unlocking it?

MIT’s journey began with a mission to transform education in Nepal. With nearly two decades of Subedi experience, MIT continues to lead the way in educational innovation, fostering a community where students and educators strive for excellence and a better world.

Fast-Forward to Today…

The world has changed. Employers are no longer interested in what graduates know, or how good they are at tests. More than ever, employers want to know what graduates can do and are looking for people with human skills and adaptability. Traditional education wasn’t built for today’s reality. And that’s why MIT is different. We believe that humans learn best by doing, because mastering a skill— any skill, from critical thinking to entrepreneurship—takes practice. We thrive when we’re working together, free to try—and fail—in a safe environment.

There are four universal capabilities you must master to be a strong, successful professional in any industry, economy, culture, or scenario:

1. Work in diverse teams to get things done that can’t be done alone

2. Inspire, lead, and manage diverse teams

3. Communicate ideas clearly and concisely

4. Make smart decisions based on practical knowledge

Now, you may think you’re naturally good at some of these, or naturally bad at some of them. But you can only get better at any of them through continuous practice—not just studying from a book. At MIT, our programs are designed so that whatever topic you’re studying, you’ll be practicing these four attributes.

MIT exists to inspire and challenge our community to make an impact that matters. From our foundation by a visionary educator in 2022, to becoming one of Nepal’s leading educational institutions, we’re constantly optimizing our learning-by-doing methodology and developing a truly unique student experience.

Program Overview: How It Works

At the Model Institute of Technology (MIT), we believe that the application of knowledge is as crucial as the knowledge itself. This approach helps you understand how various topics interact and can be applied to solve real-world challenges. Guided by professors with firsthand experience in their fields, each module builds on the previous one, helping you accumulate the skills and knowledge needed to gain a competitive advantage in the global workplace.

How do you teach skills?

Core skills—those skills that have been identified as being most valuable to career success such as communication, collaboration, creativity, lifelong learning, and critical thinking—can only be developed through practice. Teaching at MIT is all about providing an academic environment that enables students to practice these skills, make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes.

Through guided group work, one-on-one coaching sessions, and continuously reflecting on your performance—both as an individual and as part of a team— you’ll expand and deepen your practical abilities as you progress through the program. This follows the academic research in how the brain learns best: with topics and disciplines being interwoven and learned in context.

So, would I still have classes?

Absolutely, they’re just delivered in a different format. You study specialized subjects taught by professors with scheduled classes, supervised group work, and professor-led challenge sessions. They all play a vital role in your learning an assessment.

An Evolved Way to Learn

Learning at the Model Institute of Technology (MIT) is different from what you’re used to. Sure, there are readings, lectures, and tests. But just like in the real working world, there’ll be a lot more demanded of you than that. There’s more working in groups, more team projects, and a lot more sessions where it’s you and your classmates doing the talking, not the professor. Want to know what that means and how it feels? Let’s find out…

How is the modular way of learning at MIT different from traditional degree courses?

In a traditional academic setting, you would take five standalone courses in a semester, for example, General Business, Marketing, Communications, Psychology, and Finance. These courses would be taught independently of each other; they would each focus on their own content and would be unrelated to each other.

With MIT’s modular approach, instead of studying these five subjects as standalone courses, we have interlinked the topics so that the content is related, and they are all focused on solving a particular challenge.

How do you assess skills?

You cannot assess someone’s practical skill or impact in a team through a written exam. That’s why students at MIT are assessed on a continuous basis through a variety of methods, from reports to presentations, observed discussion meetings, business plans, pitches to prototypes, and also more traditional coursework and projects.

This is why your participation is so important. How much you engage and take part in classes, group work, and workshops plays a big part in your assessment and is crucial to success in the program. Your Skill development and engagement are captured through your Online dashboard so you can see how you’re progressing against assessment criteria in real-time. Your coach will work closely with you to help you connect your actions in class and in challenges with your performance.

Will I not take tests or exams then?

All the academic research shows that exams do not help students to learn. At MIT, assessments do include timed assessments and quizzes, but there are no ‘endof-year’ exams that determine your entire grade.

Can I do an internship while I study?

Yes, internships are encouraged and can be done for credit. Given the rigor of the program, they need to be done over the summer. If you want to intern in the US or UK, you can do it over the summer as part of your studies.

You can also intern in your home country or another country where you have working rights. Our dedicated careers team will support you in finding, applying for, and obtaining internships over the summer.

How many challenges do I work on each semester?

Each challenge takes half a semester to complete, so you’ll work on two challenges each semester, one after the other. Faculty from all the different disciplines work together to ensure students not only learn what they need to complete the challenge but are also able to apply this knowledge in a practical way.

His journey began in the world of engineering, but he later transitioned into business, bringing a unique blend of technical and strategic expertise to his teaching. Professor Thapa also runs his own consulting practice, helping startups and established businesses navigate complex challenges.

On... Teaching:

“I believe that teaching is a collaborative journey. My approach is not to just impart knowledge but to engage in a mutual learning process. If you think you will only learn from me, you are mistaken. We are all here to learn from each other. Challenge ideas, question assumptions, and never be afraid to explore new solutions. Google it, research it, and most importantly, think creatively.”

On... the Curriculum:

“Our focus is on applying knowledge rather than merely acquiring it. We emphasize practical, hands-on learning through real-world projects and team assignments. Instead of just learning theoretical concepts, students immediately apply what they’ve learned to solve actual business problems. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application.”

On... the Classroom:

“From day one, you’ll dive into projects and teamwork. The diverse backgrounds of your peers—from various countries, cultures, and disciplines—enrich the learning experience. The environment is designed to mirror real-world dynamics, where collaboration and diversity of thought are key to success.”

On... Passion:

“Passion drives excellence. I live by the belief that passion is crucial for success. Whether it’s in business, technology, or personal interests like photography and trekking, enthusiasm is what makes the difference. I encourage students to find their passion, as it fuels perseverance and innovation.”
