February - a month of hope!

From the cold dark days of winter early signs of new life can be seen. Following a time of rest, early spring bulbs are beginning to show through the ground. In folklore the 2nd February was celebrated as the middle of winter, the worst of the cold weather is past and the days continue to lengthen. As the weather was still cold celebrations were held indoors using candles rather than bonfires to celebrate surviving the worst of winter. Early lambs also add to the hope of new life.

For the church 2nd February is celebrated as the Presentation of Christ in the temple. It was the custom at the time of the birth of Jesus for the first born male child to be presented to God in the temple 40 days after his birth. Taking the tradition of using candles to celebrate, candles were used to celebrate the light as Christ and the recognition of Jesus as the Messiah by Simeon and Anna. This celebration has become known in many churches as Candlemas.

The light of Christ, new hope of spring after winter, new beginnings, the word which perhaps best embraces all this is love. And it is to love that our thoughts turn to on the 14th, Valentine Day. It is said that Valentine was executed by the Emperor Claudius in 269 on 14th February for refusing to deny Christ. Before his execution Valentine restored the sight of the adopted daughter of his jailer Asterius. Also that Valentine wrote a note to Asterius's daughter Julia signed "from your Valentine." This is said to be the beginning of the romantic connection with Valentine Day.

As I write this Los Angeles continues to burn with the most devastating fires whilst in other areas ice and snow cause havoc. Floods, winds and other extremes of weather are becoming more frequent. We know the devastation that global warming is causing. Our world needs us to care for it, to show love in all our actions that we know affect the world and nature. We need the world and nature to give us oxygen, nutrients and to continue pollination to allow plants to grow. We need to care for the earth to allow the earth to care for us.

February is the month when new life begins in small ways following a period of rest. From small tiny beginnings a wonderful display of spring flowers, plants and new born animals can flourish. From a small tiny light darkness can be illuminated. From a tiny baby born in a dark stable we can find hope, light and love. At Candlemas we look back on the birth of Jesus and then forward to the future that that love can bring. Join us at one of our Candlemas services on 2nd February to reflect on how our lives can turn darkness to light and love for ourselves, for others and for this world and nature.

With my love and prayers, Sandra Ellison, priest assisting during the vacancy.

BRANCASTER PARISH COUNCIL

Parish Clerk

Any Council is only as good as its clerk and its councillors working together to make a difference for the local community. Brancaster has been very lucky in having Simon Bower as Parish Clerk since 2020. Simon was diagnosed with cancer in late November 2024 and unfortunately passed away on 3rd January 2025 at Tapping House Hospice. He will be missed and remembered as someone who made a positive difference to the council and the local community. Before he died Simon was formally presented with the Freedom of Brancaster Parish as a recognition of his outstanding work. The proclamation was framed and was presented to Simon and Carol a few days before his death.

A celebration of his life will be held at Mintlyn, King's Lynn crematorium on Tuesday 28th January at 1 pm.

Parish Council Meetings

Kindly note that future meetings of the Brancaster Parish Council will be held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6.30 pm as follows: 4th February in BVH, 4th March in BSBDVH, 1st April, BVH. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION (NCI) BRANCASTER

It has been a busy and eventful year for NCI Brancaster, with high spots such as winning national recognition for the quality of the service and a visit by HRH The Princess Royal, the Royal Patron of the Institution. Christmas proved to be a quiet period, due to weather conditions along the beach and coast, but watchkeeping has continued throughout this time. I visited the station on New Year’s Day and joined Watchkeeper John G and trainee Watchkeeper Michael C, who were on duty. Despite high winds and rough seas, an intrepid family still went for a brief swim - although I noticed that their two dogs stayed on the beach! The station staff have taken the opportunity during this period to catch up on refresher training, which is an annual process. During 2024 they completed 3509 watchkeeping hours, logged 3246 vessels (87% leisure), monitored/made 1274 broadcasts on Channel 65 radio and reported 8 serious incidents to the emergency services: a magnificent effort by the Watchkeepers. This month there has been one new joiner, Doug, and three successful certifications, Richard W, Martyn and Ann: congratulations to them.

You can access images from our beach webcam at www.nci.org.uk/live-brancaster-weather/. For further information about NCI Brancaster, please contact Richard Burrows, Deputy Station Manager and Watchkeeper on 07535 612777. You can also find us on Facebook if you search for NCI Brancaster.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

Last term finished well with trips to see the Christmas decorations at Holkham (amazing!) and our traditional panto at the Corn Exchange, King’s Lynn (wow!), our very successful Nativity Service and Christmas Fayre, and our Christmas parties. A massive thank you to everyone who helped with the Fayre - particularly to all those who donated raffle prizes, baked the very delicious cakes, and organised and ran games. It was much appreciated by all the staff (who were so very busy), and all the children and the community who had such a wonderful time.

This term we have all returned ready and eager to learn and, on our first day back, we spent a very enjoyable and productive whole school day learning about and celebrating Epiphany.

We said our goodbyes to Mr Johnson and we all hope he really enjoys his retirement - and Spain! With the absence of Mr Johnson, it has been all change - Mrs Robinson is now teaching the Year 3/4 group and Mrs Willis is teaching Year 5/6. Mrs Bocking remains in Thrift Class with Year 1 and 2.

Thrift Class are learning about “Our Wonderful World” with a particular emphasis on plants, and the topic for KS2 is “Chocolate!”

We have now been informed that no changes to the school (merger/closure etc.) will be made before the end of the school year, so a massive thank you to everyone who worked so hard to achieve this. A huge relief to the whole school community. We are told further updates will be issued in due course.

Half Term starts on Friday 14th February, and school restarts on Monday 24th February. Our Easter holidays start on 4th April.

Volunteering at the School

We welcome volunteers to work with pupils on a one-to-one basis including for reading. You would need to complete a volunteer form and a DBS check. Please contact the Executive Headteacher Rebekah Woodrow at office@brancaster.norfolk.sch.uk for more details if interested.

PROMOTION FOR BRANCASTER SCHOOL PFA.

We are hosting a quiz night at Brancaster Staithe Village Hall, Wednesday 26th February. Doors open at 6.30 for a 7 pm start. £5 per head or £15 for a team of 4. We hope to have the spud van on site for a baked potato interval. Raising funds to repair outdoor climbing equipment. (The children always make a bee line for this!)

There will also be a raffle and the opportunity to get updated on the proposed merger. We will be making up 3 little raffle baskets, a children’s snack attack, a cheese and biscuits with chutneys and a pamper basket, so if you have any unwanted Christmas gifts you'd like to repurpose, please feel free. (Either drop them into school with 'for the quiz' on them or give them to a parent). Hope to see you there.

NEWS FROM BRANCASTER VILLAGE HALL (BVH)

BVH has never been busier over the Christmas season, with lots of events and activities. We are extremely grateful to all the organisers and volunteers who have made 2024 so successful; we also owe a big vote of thanks to our staff, who have given sterling service over this period. Pleasing to report that our application for a grant from the District Council in King’s Lynn to install solar panels has been successful: we will provide matched funding, and the panels will be installed shortly. They will ensure that BVH electricity bills are reduced substantially across the year. The plans to extend the car park are also being advanced, with strong support from the Parish Council, along with repairs to the existing car park and driveway.

Regular groups continue, with the exception of the Coffee Mornings, which are taking a break until March. Italian classes will commence early in 2025: if you are interested, please contact Graham on ciaonorfolk@outlook.com or telephone 07470 117085.

There is a full programme of events at Bar 71, covering Darts, Skittles, Pool and Quiz Nights; there is also an opportunity to support Moongazer’s Testicular Cancer Charity.

Brancaster Village Stores Post Office is now open on Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm. They are looking to recruit staff (18+) at weekends: let us know if you are interested in applying. Further information about these and other activities can be found on our website at brancastervillagehall.communitybookings.co.uk or on Facebook and Instagram. For enquiries, please contact us at bvhsetup@gmail.com.
