Brampton Manor Academy Roman Road London E6 3SQ Tel: 020 7540 0500 Where the stories are more than just words on paper. Dear Parent/Guardian The GCSE and A level examinations are now fully underway and so far the feedback from the students has been positive. As you know, we have not allowed the students to go on study leave as such. Instead, each GCSE and A level student has been issued with an individualised timetable showing the lessons they must attend in the lead up to each examination. Can you please support your child by asking them to show you their timetable and encouraging them to attend all the revision sessions. Those last minute tips can sometimes make all the difference between pass/fail.

A visit from the US Ambassador

The students came back from the Easter holidays to a fully refurbished dining room. Work is nearing completion on the construction of our suite of music rooms. Because of our success, demand for places in our school is growing much stronger. We are now the most oversubscribed school in Newham and in September, we will welcome 340 year 7 students! To meet this need, we are creating six additional classrooms around the school. Can I take this opportunity to bring your attention to some forthcoming events: RED Awards: 8 July Bramptonnational: 30 June Sports Awards: 1 July It would be nice to see you at these events and we will send you a reminder nearer the time. I trust that you received my previous communication regarding our school uniform. The uniform will be available to buy from Ian Howard from Monday 1 st June. Please note that it would be compulsory for all students to wear the new uniform, including the school blazer, which you would be able to purchase at a reduced price this year only. Thank you for your ongoing partnership with the school.

Brampton Manor Academy had the great pleasure of welcoming the US Ambassador in May 2015. He hosted a talk with 100 sixth form students covering many topics in relation to the United States and the United Kingdom. He engaged with the students asking them to discuss topics they were concerned with and how they feel the United States could strive to make things better. “One of the ways we can hope to improve is by accepting constructive criticism and by working together as a united front”. A powerful message that can be applied to not only politics but also academics in everyday life. It was an honour to have the US Ambassador at Brampton Manor’s Sixth Form. He was welcoming and friendly, the talk was informative and invaluable. An absolute fantastic afternoon!

G I F T E D CONGRATULATIONS! 42 of our students in years 9, 10 and 11 were awarded medal certificates which include 2 Gold, 10 Silver and 40 Bronze medals. This was for their outstanding performance in the nationwide UKMT Intermediate Challenge Mathematics Examination. A special acknowledgment and commendation goes out to Dillon Cox, a year 9 student. His mathematical skills saw him achieve the highest score in the school, allowing him to proceed to the next round, the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad, which will increase in difficulty. Shown above from left to right are some of the year 9 students that took part. Henock Girma, Imtiaz Farooque, Raja Khan, Nadir Miah, Dillon Cox, Ermeyas Girma, Gift Nwandu and Thahira Nazim.

This academic year has seen a new cohort of Gifted and Talented Year 9 students embark upon a programme with KPMG, a leading professional services firm. KPMG is an international company providing key financial services to businesses including auditing, advisory and tax. Students have been working on an ongoing project which involves proposals for the regeneration of the Boleyn Ground in a series of workshops throughout the year and will present their final presentations to a group of judges from Barclays Bank, Clifford Chance and KPMG. They will also have the chance to visit the prestigious Queen Mary University in East London in May in order to experience a typical day of University life. All students involved have been consistently hard working and enthusiastic in all aspects of the project. This project will no doubt inspire them to reach their potential at Brampton, university and in their chosen careers. It has been my pleasure working with these talented students over the last year and I wish them the best of luck for the future.

‘”he acts at Wembley really inspired me to follow my dreams. One act that particularly stood out to me was Sir Richard Branson. He spoke about his journey to success and this made me realise that with the right mind set I had the remarkable power to shape my own career and achieve all of my future goals.”

Simran Dhillon

“Our KPMG trips have taught us a lot about the business world, and the future that lies ahead once we have finished school. The extracurricular activities and presentations have widened our views.”

Ermeyas Girma

Earlier this year a group of gifted and talented Year 8 students were lucky enough to be invited to the prestigious ‘We Day’ event organised by the charity ‘Free the Children.’ The largest event of its kind, We Day brought together inspirational speakers, politicians, celebrities and musicians to celebrate the power of youth to change the world. The day was a momentous occasion and included guest speakers such as Sir Richard Branson, Martin Sheen and Princess Eugenie and musical acts Including Sean Mendes, Years and Years and Conor Maynard. A great day was had by all and we left feeling incredibly motivated to inspire change for the better both in our local, national and international communities. Thanks to the Year 8 G+T students for such a memorable day. Miss Dowling

Skiing in Austria!

TRIPS

During the Easter Holidays 21 students attended the school Ski Trip. With the destination being Austria, there was excitement all round. During the time there, the weather conditions were in their favour and the quality of the snow could not have been better! There were a number of crashes and temper tantrums on the slopes but that was just the staff! The trip was incredibly enjoyable and the students were an absolute credit to the school.. The most pleasing aspect of the trip was seeing all of the students progress and develop into fantastic skiers. I am in the process of arranging next year’s trip, so if you are interested please come and see me for further details.

A governor from another school present at the event wrote, “I was absolutely blown away by the confidence of the young people who took part, particularly Titas.”

Against Captain’s Orders National Maritime Museum Aye! Aye! Year 7 students took a voyage to an interactive theatrical performance this term transforming themselves into the crew of ‘HMS Adventure’, exploring the museum’s wealth of history and trying to uncover historical artefacts in an exciting race against time, or else they were all stuck in the museum for 100 years! Students found the items and saved the day. All, of course, whilst wearing a lifejacket!

A Trip Down ‘false’ Memory Lane! Our sixth formers were taken to the Emmanuel Center in Westminster to attend a conference with some of the most prominent researchers in the field of Psychology. We are especially glad that we got to participate in a lecture by Elizabeth Loftus, a high-profile and influential researcher who has presented her work on false eye witness accounts and manipulation of memories across international news networks as well as TED Talks. We believe this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students.
