Brakel has translated this into acceleration not only of product development, but also in the field of modelling and calculations. This not only produces benefits in terms of comfort and safety in the field of daylight and natural (fire) ventilation, it also highlight savings possibilities for you.

In this first international edition of the BrakelAtmosphere you will find various example projects that we have completed in cooperation with our worldwide partner network.

We hope that this will inspire and challenge you to participate with us in the dialogue on daylight penetration, natural ventilation and fire ventilation in your building.

Brakel collaboration for smoke and heat extraction (SHEV) and natural ventilation The worldwide voestalpine Group is a steel based technology and industrial goods company. The company is, for example, one of the leading partners of the European automotive industry and household appliance industry, as well as the global oil and gas industry. During the casting of the steel for a renovation, voestalpine worked together with Brakel to put in an SHEV system and natural ventilation. Mr Edwin HĂśtzenegger, Technical Infrastructure Project Engineer - Industrial Building Technology, talks about the renovation.

Renovation of the steel framework, frontage and roof The problem was the age of the hall (which was built in 1940). The steel framework of the building had already been heavily affected by corrosion

in some places and required renovation. At the same time, the frontage and the roof were also renovated, which gave us the opportunity to install natural ventilation and an SHEV system.

1940: no valid SHEV standards and guidelines The hall was built back in 1940. Back then there were no standards or guidelines for SHEV yet. There were only a few windows which could be opened for ventilation purposes.

The challenge: Renovating the building during operation The biggest challenge was, and still is, renovating the building during operation. The renovation work was not allowed to cause any production losses or disruptions. The time schedule was specified precisely in advance, together with the production team and project team, and must be adhered to exactly.

In order to minimise the risk of fire and to continuously improve safety for both people and facilities, as well as the availability thereof, the group “Preventative fire protection” has been created, which is involved in all newly constructed buildings and renovations at the site in Linz. For this purpose, tailor-made fire protection solutions are being created – also for the SHEV system.

On the other hand, we also want an aesthetically-pleasing solution. Together with our design committee (architects), we decided on transparent louvered ventilators, Brakel® Estra and Brakel® Eura.

Detection Beams have been installed in a great many sheds. The packages are transported on exceptionally long conveyor belts. A beam is able to detect over extreme lengths. Traditional smoke alarms are not suitable for this purpose. A package that is located between two smoke alarms can burn for a long time before the fire is detected. Detection takes too long. DHL does work with traditional detection systems in its offices.

Smoke and heat extraction (SHEV) DHL Express believes that the safety of people is extremely important. If a fire is detected they must be able to leave the building in good time. The SHEV installations in the sorting centres make this possible.

Why thermally broken Optima in ceiling void?

“We chose large size thermally broken Brakel® Optima ventilators in the ceiling void. As the cold rooms operate between 0-10°C, we were concerned that we could end up with a cold bridge between the cold room and the roof void”, explains the architect. “This would have compromised the required even room temperature and in turn, increased the loading on our cooling plant. Thus, we opted for an insulated ceiling ventilator. This ventilator also negates condensation on the top side of the ventilator, which can cause a constant dripping inside the building, especially during the summer months”.

And this heat needs to be properly extracted. Ron Vogels, Technical Manager at Cups4you, says that the hall having natural ventilation has the most pleasant working climate.

“Contrary to expectations perhaps, but the hall with natural ventilation has the best climate.”

Cups4you, formerly Vadeal Plastics, has been operating since 1969 and, besides synthetic packaging, also produces bottle caps for both glass and PET bottles. These are manufactured 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In practice this means that outside air is blown in, which is then discharged via the roof. However, this does not provide a uniform temperature gradient; somehow the heat is not extracted. What would be the heating effect?
