“It’s a destination wedding without having to renew your passport,” said Katherine, (Kate), Hebenstreit. She and Husband Daniel of Omaha, Neb. recently hosted their wedding in the Brainerd lakes area. Vacation-style! The Hebenstreits estimated about 30-45 of their 246 guests flew in from various regions to attend their weekend wedding including the groom’s cousin, Miles Schaefer who flew all the way from Afghanistan to officiate. Since 1996 Katherine (Schmelzle) and her family had been making treks “up north” from Eden Prairie to vacation in their cabin on Gull Lake. Shortly after the couple started dating in 2012, Kate invited Dan, originally from Omaha Neb., to the family cabin. “He was in ‘awe’ at the size of the lake,” she recalled.
“Lakes in Nebraska do not even compare to Minnesota,” Kate explained. “Dan became obsessed with our cabin visits quickly,” she joked. When Dan met Kate, he had a 3 year old son, Jack. Soon after Jack’s fourth birthday, Dan and Kate’s relationship became serious and the couple decided to introduce the two. “I fell in love with Jack the minute I met him,” insisted Kate. “Jack thought I was HIS friend for a while and eventually caught on that I was dating his Dad.” When Dan proposed, he stood behind Jack
