Brainerd woman and cancer survivor encourages routine breast exams
Karen Johnson has been living in Brainerd for about four decades. When her health deteriorated, she turned to Essentia Health.
In August 2021, with no warning signs, she was diagnosed with stage 3 metastatic breast cancer.
“When I got the news, I immediately knew I wanted to stay in Brainerd to get my treatment,” Johnson said. “I wanted to stay close to home.”
So that’s what she did. Her entire fight against cancer was supported by the experts at Essentia.
“I can say without a doubt that I received great care at Essentia — from the placement of my port to chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, more chemotherapy and, finally, removal of the port and recovery,” she said. “Since I live alone, I was so grateful to receive this care in my backyard.”

Johnson’s care team included Dr. Aby Philip, a hematology and oncology specialist; Dr. Mark Hightower, a surgeon; Dr. Kristi Gebhardt, her primary care physician; and several
After about six months, Johnson received the good news – she was cancer-free.
“I really believe in the experts at Essentia,” said Johnson. “I couldn’t be happier with my successful outcome.”
ESSENTIA ENCOURAGES PRIORITIZING BREAST HEALTH
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Outside of skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women. However, when it’s caught in early stages, localized to the breast, the five-year survival rate is 99%.
Essentia Health recommends having a clinical breast exam annually. Between these appointments, medical providers recommend self-breast awareness, which is knowing how your breasts normally look and feel.
Essentia recommends women of average risk get a screening mammogram every year beginning at age 40. These can be scheduled with your primary care provider. Essentia offers digital 2-D and 3-D mammograms. A 3-D mammogram takes pictures from several angles and produces a 3-D image of breast tissue that is examined layer by layer. Additionally, ultrasounds and breast MRIs can be used if further imaging is needed.
Please contact your insurance provider if you have questions regarding mammogram coverage.
The Essentia Health High-Risk Breast Cancer Program focuses on helping patients understand their risk for developing breast cancer. After a thorough history, examination and education session, the patient and Breast Health Program nurse practitioner partner to form a personalized plan of care.
As part of our commitment to enhance access to high-quality health care in every community we serve, Essentia Health is excited to offer mobile mammograms directly to patients in Deerwood, Pine River and Staples

Preventive dentistry IN A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE
BY SUE READY
Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is a third generation family-owned dental office that has been helping patients smile for over 70 years. The office is located in Baxter, Minnesota. They provide a wide range of services, including comprehensive care, bleaching, implants, cosmetic work and dental wellness visits. They have worked with infants starting at a week old and going all the way up to patients 104 years old.
Owner Dr. Christopher Dens noted, “The goal of Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is to help people keep their teeth healthy while doing it in the simplest, least invasive, and least expensive way possible. We are there to meet people where they are at, whether they have a healthy mouth or this is their first time going to the dentist in a while. We will work with people to understand their oral health and be their guide to navigate through the dental world toward better health. At the end of the day, it is the patient’s mouth and the patient’s decision. We will just help patients get the best information and review the pros, cons, risks, and benefits to help them make the best decision for themselves. Prevention is cheaper, easier, healthier and better and we focus on moving forward for patients.”
Cosmetic & Family Dentistry can work with all types of dental insurance. They handle all the paperwork processing and will help utilize your insurance to minimize out-of-pocket costs. New patient forms are conveniently online if you want to complete your paperwork beforehand. No dental insurance? NO PROBLEM! They offer their own in-office dental benefits plan that saves you money and has fewer restrictions than most dental insurance policies. And it is affordable at less than $1/day for the entire year of coverage.
In 2015, Dr. Dens helped implement the Minnesota School Sealant Program, a statewide community outreach program that provides free and reduced-cost dental services in schools. They have served students in over 150 schools throughout Minnesota the past year. A licensed dental

professional offers students cleanings, sealants and fluoride varnishes. Twentyfive percent of the patients see this as their first experience with a dentist. Preventing decay makes your child less likely to experience toothaches and dental pain. Dr. Dens and his team go above and beyond to serve all patients needing help. If you are looking for a dentist who supports their community and kids throughout the state, then come and visit them at their Baxter office.
Cosmetic & Family Dentistry offers allinclusive general services, routine exams, dental fillings, emergency dental, dental hygiene, dentures and veneers, teeth whitening and pediatric dentistry. The office employs state-of-the-art technology to give you better dental health. By using digital X-rays, patients get less radiation than traditional cardboard X-rays. The latest computer charting records, including digital imagery and a free smile consultation, are available for patients. The office uses excellent safety protocols during their patients’ visits. The staff keeps updated with current research, technology and noninvasive methods. Many of the kids they see have cavities, but they no longer need to get numb in the process. The office is pioneering less invasive ways to treat
decay using only handheld instruments. This helps make it easier for kids to be more comfortable during their visit.
Dr. Dens fully recognizes how fortunate he is to have the best and most amazing team of 25 to work with, including Sam Duberowski, DDS, Garrettt Skonseng, DDS, and Darlene Zemke, MSADT.
Dr. Dens noted, “The whole staff is friendly and caring, and they are the backbone of my office and make all the magic happen.”

Patients are always treated like family with compassion, care and respect. Cosmetic & Family Dentistry aims to stop decay before it happens with good dental hygiene. They prioritize individualized care. They take time to understand your specific needs and concerns, ensuring you receive tailored treatment plans that address your oral health goals. Personalized care with a comfortable and welcoming environment are their top priorities.

Radiation oncologist Dr. Sheilaine Mabanta to join Lakewood Health System
Lakewood Health System is proud to announce the addition of radiation oncologist, Dr. Sheilaine Mabanta, to its growing oncology team. Dr. Mabanta, who will officially join Lakewood in September 2025, brings a wealth of expertise to rural cancer care at Lakewood. Mabanta is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiation Oncology and a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
Dr. Mabanta’s arrival further solidifies Lakewood’s commitment to providing best-in-class oncology care right here in Staples, MN. As construction of the new Lakewood cancer center continues toward completion this fall, the addition of Dr. Mabanta marks another step forward in delivering comprehensive cancer care to our rural community.
“Dr. Mabanta’s extensive experience and deep passion for patient care will be
a true asset to our team and the patients we serve,” said Dr. Wade Swenson, medical oncologist and leader of Lakewood’s oncology program. “Her expertise in radiation oncology complements our multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, ensuring our patients have access to the highest level of treatment close to home.”
Dr. Mabanta joins a rapidly growing team of oncology experts which currently consists of five full-time oncology providers. Dr. Aquino Williams is also set to join the practice this fall, bringing the total number of oncology providers to seven.
It is widely acknowledged that patients with cancer living in rural areas face limited access to oncology care and providers, often traveling long distances which can directly affect the quality of care and health outcomes. Lakewood is keenly focused on this, offering quick
access to care to ensure rural patients do not have to endure lengthy and stressful travel to urban centers for treatment.
“The new cancer center is a gamechanger for our region, but outstanding cancer care is about more than just a building,” said Lisa Bjerga, Lakewood President & CEO. “None of this would be possible without our growing team of multidisciplinary experts. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate group of providers and staff, led by Dr. Swenson, who are committed to delivering the highest level of care.”
Lakewood’s community-based approach to cancer care in Staples demonstrates the importance of accessible healthcare in rural settings, showing that proximity to medical care can significantly influence treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Find solutions for
common women’s health issues
Women’s gynecological health is a cornerstone of overall well-being. Yet many women are uncertain about how to seek medical care for common concerns that can impact their quality of life. Pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, urinary leakage and menopausal symptoms are among the most prevalent issues.
Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain can stem from conditions like endometriosis, pelvic infections, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, or tight pelvic floor muscles. Treatment options include pain management, hormonal therapies, physical therapy, and minimally invasive surgeries, tailored to the underlying cause.
Heavy or irregular periods: There can be many causes of heavy or irregular periods including uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, adenomyosis, or ovulation problems such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Depending on the cause of heavy or irregular bleeding, treatments may include lifestyle or dietary modifications, supplements, hormonal medications, or surgical interventions, including minimally invasive procedures.
Urinary leakage: This is an extremely common concern. Approximately 25% of young women, 60% of middle-aged women, and 75% of older women experience involuntary urine loss. Urine loss can be caused by a variety of factors including infection, overactive bladder, weakening of the pelvic floor muscles or laxity in the tissue beneath the urethra (where the urine comes out). Treatments may include exercises to regain bladder control, medications to relax the bladder, a pessary, or a surgical procedure.
Menopausal symptoms: Menopause is defined as the absence of a period for over one year. Symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes and vaginal dryness. There are both hormonal and non-hormonal options to treat these symptoms. Meet with one of our providers to discuss which treatment option is better for you based on your individual medical history.
Meet two OBGYN specialists at Riverwood Healthcare Center: Our Women’s Health physician team includes two obstetrician/gynecologists who see

patients at the specialty clinic in Aitkin. Both are trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques that allow same day surgeries and faster recovery.
Alisha Lindberg, MD/Surgeon: Dr. Lindberg earned her medical degree and completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Minnesota. “I am passionate about comprehensive women’s healthcare and providing patients with the education they need to make an informed decision about their health and wellness. I enjoy helping patients with endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent miscarriages, infertility, cancer prevention and high-risk obstetrics. I am also trained in robotic surgery, allowing me to perform more complex gynecologic procedures.”

Unlocking your wellness potential
BY ABBY HUCK | HEALTH COACH AT THE BRAINERD FAMILY YMCA
Starting a health journey can be overwhelming. Whether it’s figuring out where to begin or staying consistent, it’s easy to feel lost. That’s where health coaching can make a difference. Abby Huck, a certified health coach at the Brainerd Family YMCA, explains how health coaching works, who it’s for, and how it can help you achieve your wellness goals.
WHAT IS HEALTH COACHING?
Health coaching is a collaborative process where individuals work with a coach to set and achieve personal wellness goals. Abby describes it as an extra layer of support, helping people build healthy habits in a structured way.
“Sessions typically last around 30 minutes, with the first meeting being 45 to 60 minutes,” Abby explains. “We focus on areas like movement routines, time management, food habits, stress management, sleep, and weight loss.”
Importantly, health coaching is not therapy or a prescriptive service. If an issue arises that’s outside the scope of coaching, clients may be referred to a counselor or physician for further assistance.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT A HEALTH COACH?
Health coaching is tailored to each person’s needs, and can be offered inperson or virtually.
“Health coaching helps people create a plan that fits their lifestyle,” Abby says. “It’s all about finding what works for you.”
DO YOU HAVE TO BE FIT TO HAVE A HEALTH COACH?
A common misconception is that health coaching is only for people who are already fit. However, health coaching is for anyone, regardless of where they are in their wellness journey.
Whether you’re new to health and wellness or looking to enhance your current routine, a health coach can guide you toward your goals.
IS HEALTH COACHING EXPENSIVE?
The YMCA works to keep health coaching affordable. Abby shares that there are discounts for clients who sign up for multiple sessions. Currently, the YMCA offers 25% off a package of four sessions with the code BEWELL.
We want to make coaching accessible to everyone. We’re committed to helping people improve their well-being without it being a financial burden.

ADVANTAGES OF HAVING SURGERY AT THE BRAINERD LAKES SURGERY CENTER VERSUS A HOSPITAL
BY DR. KURTIS WATERS
When it comes to choosing where to undergo surgery, patients are often faced with two primary options: a surgery center or a hospital. As the medical director of the Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center and personally having been a patient at both, it is no wonder it can be confusing to patients the different options available to them. While both settings offer essential surgical services, there may be significant advantages to choosing a surgery center, particularly when it comes to cost, time efficiency, safety, and patient satisfaction. This article explores why surgery centers may be a superior choice for many patients.
1. LOWER COST
One of the most compelling reasons patients opt for surgery centers is the significantly lower cost compared to hospital-based settings. In this day and age of high deductible plans and patients being responsible for a larger portion of their medical care bill, this can be significant. Hospitals often have higher overhead expenses such as emergency services, inpatient care, and extended operating hours, which contribute to the overall cost of surgery.
Surgery centers, on the other hand, are specifically designed for outpatient procedures, which means they operate with streamlined systems than a hospital. As a result, patients can expect lower surgical fees, anesthesia costs, and facility charges. Many times, surgery centers offer procedures at a fraction of the cost that would be incurred in a hospital setting. This cost disparity is especially evident when considering elective surgeries or minor procedures, which are common at surgery centers.
The financial savings are not only advantageous for patients but also for insurers, who benefit from the reduced costs. Patients may notice a cost savings up to 5x from simple procedures such as ear tubes all the way to total joint replacements. If you are like me with a
high deductible plan and as more people look to minimize out-of-pocket expenses, the affordability of surgery centers makes them an increasingly attractive option.
2. TIME EFFICIENCY
Hospitals are large institutions with complex systems, which can often lead to delays in scheduling, longer wait times for preoperative assessments, and extended recovery periods. In contrast, surgery centers are dedicated solely to performing outpatient procedures, meaning they are much more focused on the task at hand. These centers have streamlined processes that allow for quicker preoperative evaluations and ensuring patients can undergo their procedures with minimal delay. Additionally, surgery centers often have faster turnover times between surgeries due to their specialized setup. This efficiency results in patients having their surgeries performed on time, with fewer scheduling conflicts or delays.
Recovery times at surgery centers are generally quicker as well. Since most surgeries performed in these centers are outpatient, patients are discharged the same day, and the focus on short recovery periods means they can return to their normal lives faster.
3. HIGH SAFETY STANDARDS
While hospitals are often associated with complex, high-risk surgeries, surgery centers maintain a very high level of safety in a controlled environment. In fact, because surgery centers primarily handle outpatient procedures that are less invasive, the chances of complications are often reduced.
The Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center adheres to strict regulations and is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), ensuring that they meet the highest standards of patient care and safety. The surgical teams in the center are highly trained in the specific types of procedures
they perform, leading to an environment of expertise and familiarity.
Moreover, surgery centers have high nurse to patient ratios, allowing medical professionals to focus their full attention on each individual. The smaller, more controlled environment minimizes exposure to potential infections and complications, providing a safer option for patients.
4. HIGH PATIENT SATISFACTION
The Brainerd Lakes Surgery Center proudly excels with high patient satisfaction scores. Patient satisfaction is a key priority at surgery centers, and many patients report a higher level of satisfaction compared to hospital settings. One of the reasons for this is the more personalized care patients receive. At surgery centers, the atmosphere is often less stressful and more intimate, allowing for better communication between the surgical team and the patient.
Patients in surgery centers typically report a smoother, faster experience from check-in to recovery. The staff is generally attentive and more available to answer questions, ensuring that patients feel comfortable and well-informed throughout the entire process.
CONCLUSION
Choosing the Brainerd Lakes Surgery center over a hospital based surgery may offer numerous benefits, including lower costs, greater time efficiency, high safety standards, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Surgery centers operate with a clear focus on outpatient care, providing patients with a cost-effective, convenient, and personalized alternative to hospitalbased surgery. As more patients seek affordable, high-quality surgical options, surgery centers are becoming an increasingly popular choice for a wide range of procedures including local procedures to joint replacement surgery.

Miracles
ON HORSEBACK
BY SUSAN SMITH-GRIER
Kelly Peterson’s destiny seemed to be plotted out for her when she was recovering from a serious automobile accident right before Christmas in 1988. Not only did her injuries include several broken bones, but the tragedy also left her in a coma for several days. Thankfully she woke up and that day her life’s mission was set on course.
DESTINY CALLS
“The first thing that came to mind,” said Kelly, “was putting a child who couldn’t walk on the back of a horse.” That vision was the beginning of her journey toward creating a space where children with disabilities could find happiness and healing through a relationship with a horse. That space is now known
as Acorn Hill EAAT Inc., located in Motley, Minnesota.
She saw herself working with young children around pre-school age and using horses as a means to help them gain confidence, move their bodies and connect in ways new to them. Bringing the children and horses together proved in many cases to be nothing short of miraculous when considering the outcomes of the relationships.
Of course, the first leg of Kelly’s journey was her own healing from that fateful accident. After enduring the grueling recovery process, she went on to college and studied intensely to help children with special needs. She received her master’s degree in special education and learned to work with various types of technology to help elementary children.
MAKING THE EQUINE CONNECTION
Eventually Kelly was able to realize her dream in bringing children with disabilities together with horses. It began with a mare named Ruby. She was the first horse Kelly worked with to bring healing to the children. Kelly recounted one child hadn’t been able to sit up at all.
Acorn Hill uses a team approach, which includes horse handlers, a physical therapist and Kelly as a certified therapeutic riding instructor (CTRI). Eventually the child was able to sit up by herself thanks to the synergy between her body and Ruby’s. Many such changes have occurred as disabled children have been exposed to equine therapy. “This therapy is like magic,” said Kelly.
Time and again seemingly miraculous strides have been made in a child’s

recovery through the relationship with the horse. The rider learns to breathe in sync with the horse, there is improvement in large muscle movement, social skills and overall strengthening takes place.
Winston Churchill is often cited as the person who said, “The outside of a horse is the best thing for the inside of a man.” Kelly attests to the validity of this statement, at least where her young riders are concerned.
SPECIAL HORSES FOR SPECIAL KIDS
Not every horse is suitable for equine therapy. “Immediately they must be able to tolerate unfamiliar things not usually expected such as bouncing/rolling balls, bubbles, flapping flags and part of their training is to maintain those abilities,” said Kelly. The young riders may make unexpected movements or sounds, and the horse needs to be calm when these things happen. Some animals are easily spooked and therefore not able to work in this setting.
Acorn Hill is an accredited PATH International equine therapy center. As a PATH facility, the horses are required to meet certain standards. It takes time and dedication to prepare a horse to do

KeepingtheComforts ofHome
this important work in the safest manner possible. PATH has guidelines as to the number of sessions they can work in any given day/week. Time off is mandatory. The animals’ health with farrier services and veterinary care is monitored as well as its overall well-being and happiness in doing their work.
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
In many ways, Kelly’s dream is still unfolding. Recently the Paul Peterson Arena, a Place of Comfort, Strength and Healing, was built at Upper Oak Farm to increase the level of care. Thanks to a generous private loan and named after Kelly’s son, the arena was built as a tribute to Paul, a college-bound high school senior who was killed in an automobile accident on Feb. 29, 2020.
The temperature-controlled arena makes it possible to provide equine therapy services no matter what the season. Sessions can be conducted indoors, out of the Minnesota weather. Although the basic structure is in place, there is much more to be finished, including a handwashing station with hot and cold running water and a therapy room for pre- and post-hippotherapy sessions.
There will be an open house from 2-5 p.m. June 28, 2025, to show off the new structure and raise funds for its completion, at 7969 65th Ave. SW, Motley.
MORE MIRACLES TO COME
Working with children has been a priority for Kelly at Acorn Hill; however, that is only the beginning. She envisions a place where all ages can come for hippotherapy and receive healing and peace through the interactions.
One of the many goals Kelly has is to increase the number of horses available for therapy. She would like to be able to serve older and bigger riders. She would also like to see more therapists come to work with people desiring this type of therapy. Other endeavors in the future include equine-assisted learning and Silver Saddles, a program designed to help people with dementia.
Kelly has great insight on the relationship between humans and horses and the healing that can take place. “Horses live in the moment. We bring them from the wild to domesticity and they allow us to do that. They choose to work with us and they share healing and love.”

Skin cancer: What does it look like?
BY SHEILA HELMBERGER
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer found in the United States. Even in lake country where we experience as many cold months as those filled with sun, skin cancer is seen every day.
It can most often be found in the areas of the human body frequently exposed to the sun but can be located anywhere. One in five Americans will have a skin cancer by the time they reach age 70 and Minnesota currently has the third highest rate of melanoma in the country.
Dr. Craig Roelke is a board-certified dermatologist with Lakewood Health

System in Staples. Dr. Kristina Britton is a board-certified dermatologist and the owner of Central Minnesota Dermatology in Brainerd.
Both agree the high numbers of skin cancer in our area are not that surprising. Dr. Britton says several factors contribute to our numbers.
“Our love of the outdoors, a large farming community, a high population of people with lighter skin tones, and insufficient sun protection. We have numerous lakes, and it is common for residents to spend all day on the water.

We also have a significant portion of our population that go south for the winter and are exposed to sun all year round,” she said.
Dr. Roelke adds that cumulative sun exposure, meaning the amount of sun exposure someone has gotten over the course of their lifetime, also comes into consideration.
“The importance of sun protection and the risk of sun exposure haven’t always been fully understood. Those who spent a lot of time outdoors when they were younger, or grew up on farms, without the use of adequate protection, may still be at a higher risk today,” he said. He adds that exposure to the sun’s rays is not necessarily dependent on warm temperatures. Snowboarders, skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts are also at equal risk.
TYPES OF SKIN CANCER
There are three types of common skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells. It appears as a bump and is skin-colored or pink. Basal cell carcinoma does not typically metastasize but will continue to grow and can grow below the skin. Treatment can include prescription creams, surgery or radiation, to ensure its removal.
Squamous cell carcinoma is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells from the squamous cells in the epidermis. Although it is typically not life-threatening, if it is not caught early and treated, it is possible for it to grow and spread, leading to more serious complications. Both basal cell and squamous cell cancers are relatively slow growing, with some exceptions.
“People are probably most familiar with melanoma,” says Dr. Roelke. “Partly

Dr. Kristina Britton
Dr. Craig Roelke
because it can be more advanced.” It is also the most serious type of skin cancer. Five or more sunburns can double your risk of developing skin cancer. Melanoma starts in the melanocytes, the cells that make up our pigment and give our skin its color. An atypical mole that may be suspicious for melanoma includes an asymmetrical shape, changes in color or size, itching or bleeding and a border that is unusual or uneven border. When melanoma is left untreated it can spread to vital organs. “Even melanoma, when caught early, is extremely treatable,” ensures Dr. Roelke.
TREATMENT
A biopsy is required for a diagnosis of skin cancer. Treatment depends on the type of cancer that has been determined and can range from a topical cream at its earliest, to a number of procedures including surgical removal of the site and spot that lead to the diagnosis as well as additional skin around it until it is determined it has all been eliminated. For larger cancer sites that may have roots in the skin — a larger incision will be made around and below the spot and will be submitted for biopsy until the margins are found to be clear of the disease. Another treatment for skin cancer, called Mohs, or Mohs micrographic surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure that cuts away thin layers of skin in stages. As it is removed, each layer is examined under a microscope in-house for signs of cancer while the patient waits. The procedure continues until a layer is reached without the presence of cancer. Dr. Roelke said Lakewood Health System will begin offering the Mohs procedure to its patients this spring.
There are several precautions people can take on their own that will reduce the risk of skin cancer. Schedule regular skin checks with a dermatologist. Reduce the amount of exposure to the sun with the use of proper sunscreen and accessories such as hats and wraps. Check the body periodically for new spots and watch for changes in those that exist, especially in sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck, arms, and back of hands. “I recommend looking for your ‘ugly duckling.’” says Dr. Britton. “Something that does not look like anything else on your body should be examined. Watch for any spot that is new or changing color, shape or size as well as a spot that is bleeding, painful or growing. All of these are possible indicators of abnormal skin cells and should be examined.”

With the aid of Essentia Health in Brainerd, he initiated monthly support and information meetings in the fall of 2019, and has continuously supported the lakes area with the sessions located at and with, the cooperation of Cragun’s Legacy Golf Club in East Gull Lake.
According to The American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the leading diagnosed cancer in men, next to skin cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death to men. Family history plays a large part in the diagnosis of this all too common disease, and can more than double a 1 in 7 chance of a positive diagnosis.
After battling four recurrent prostate cancer occurrences, he authored the book “Man-Opause,” that chronicled his personal journey. His book is now in its third edition and has been continually updated since 2019 to reflect changing medical technology and research, especially prostate cancer. As with all of our services, the book and other materials are distributed free of charge through the LPCF, as an integral part of our mission. www.lpcfund.org

A MORE COLLABORATIVE APPROACH
BY KATHLEEN KRUEGER
Alternative medicine. In the past, you may have heard that term used in reference to healthcare practices like chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, functional medicine, or various other therapies. There was little, if any, consultation between your primary team at the clinic and the health practitioners you visited outside of the conventional medical system. This separation of services is coming to an end. You will see the term “integrated medicine” or “integrated health” instead.
You will find providers with training in functional or herbal medicine, osteopathy, midwifery, massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture, among those listed under the heading Integrative Medicine. Treatments like dry needling, IV nutrients, light therapies, and other non-invasive treatments might also be included.
We spoke to healthcare providers in the Brainerd lakes area to learn more about what integrative health options are currently available and the benefits of these collaborative efforts.
ESSENTIA HEALTH
“Greater patient engagement and longer visits with your health practitioner are a signature of what you can expect from our providers,” according to Dr. Nancy Sudak, director of Essentia’s Integrative Health Department.
Essentia’s Integrative Health providers include physicians and nurse practitioners with training in functional medicine, which focuses on treating the root causes of ailments and diseases. To accomplish this, patients are required to fill out a very thorough life history survey. The survey will include questions about

past accidents and traumas, diet, physical activities, spiritual and emotional health, how you handle stress, exposure to toxins and allergens, sleep patterns, and much more.
Dr. Sudak’s team offers their services in person and via telehealth, allowing them to see patients over a wide geographic area, including Brainerd.
According to Dr. Sudak, Essentia has focused its integrative health services on treatments that insurance providers typically cover. Acupuncture treatments, for instance, are often covered by insurance carriers for specific types of pain relief but not other types of treatment. Each insurance policy is different. It’s important for your provider and insurance company to communicate prior to scheduling services.
Dr. Steven Harder, at the Essentia Brainerd Clinic, has the letters – D.O. after his name, which stands for Doctor of Osteopathy. However, he is also accredited as a Family Medicine. Dr. Harder defines Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) as specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal (or structural) issues using our hands. By structural,

he means muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, or nerves.
“(A DO) is always thinking about whether or not there could be a structural component to the illness, so we can employ one of these treatment techniques and hopefully make somebody better faster,” Dr. Harder explains. Other physicians in the Essentia Health System often refer patients to Dr. Harder to offer another level of care.
KEY WELLNESS & AESTHETICS
“Look, feel, and live your best life” is the motto at Key Wellness & Aesthetics in Crosslake, Minnesota. Founded by two Nurse Practitioners, Kelly VanVickle and Kelly Thompson, Key Wellness offers the traditional primary care you might expect from your family physician – physical exams, medical prescriptions, and ordering lab tests when appropriate. But they also offer several wellness and aesthetic services like IV nutrition, hormone therapy for men and women, infertility consultations, and regenerative solutions for aging.

The providers at Key Wellness focus on what is most important to the patient. Sometimes, that means improving someone’s outlook on life by reducing the signs of aging. Other times, it might mean improving sexual function or IV therapy following chemotherapy. “Recently, we set a goal of being able to get up off the floor without assistance for a 70-year-old weight-loss patient because that was her priority,” VanVickle explained.
When it comes to weight loss, the focus goes beyond the number on the scale. “We look at multiple parameters with our weight loss patients,” VanVickle went on to say. “An additional focus may be improving strength, reducing prescription medications, and/or improving cholesterol and blood pressure.”
“We spend time getting to know our patients’ medical history, lifestyle choices, stress levels, diet, and other aspects of their life,” shares Kelly VanVickle. “‘I finally feel heard’ is the statement we hear most from patients,” Kelly Thompson added.
LAKES AREA IV WELLNESS CLINIC
It was the COVID pandemic that gave Tracy Matros, Family Nurse Practitioner, the final impetus to open her own Brainerd clinic in 2022. “I saw how frustrated patients were with the limited treatment options available through traditional medicine in the Lakes Area,” Tracy says. “I offer a root cause medical approach, looking for the underlying cause of symptoms.”
Tracy’s approach is commonly referred to as functional medicine. It is a holistic view of health and wellness that focuses on optimizing body function with a strong emphasis on natural

solutions and lifestyle modifications. Lakes Area IV offers indepth medical labs such as a GI Map to determine gut function and bacteria levels, hormone level testing for thyroid, cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone, as well as traditional labs you would receive from a primary care physician.
IV Vitamin Infusions are a key service offered at this clinic. Specialized nutrient combinations are offered to give your body an extra boost. Infusions can be targeted towards allergy symptoms, fatigue, athletic endurance, surgery recovery, chemotherapy support, migraines, and several other health concerns. IV infusions can also be administered in the comfort of your home if preferred over a trip to the clinic.

Another unique treatment offered at this clinic is Ozone Therapy. Ozone may be recommended as part of a treatment plan for many chronic conditions, including autoimmune diseases, macular degeneration, and chronic infections, among other health issues.

Aesthetic and regenerative services, detox protocols, supplement recommendations, medical weight loss, and red-light sauna treatments are among the many other services offered by this personalized care clinic.
LAKEWOOD HEALTH SYSTEMS
“One size does not fit all when it comes to healthcare,” offers Dr. Christine Albrecht, Chief Medical Officer for Lakewood Health Systems. To provide a wider range of choices for their patients, Lakewood continues to expand its integrative health options. Massage therapy is an option that has been offered through Lakewood for over 15 years. Massage treatments are often recommended for hospice patients but are also available as part of postpartum care for birthing patients or general wellness care. Additional integrative health providers at Lakewood include a midwife as part of its Obstetrics staff and a Family Practice physician trained in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments.

acupuncture. Dr. Person had a lot to say about the benefits patients are experiencing due to Lakewood’s decision to add chiropractic and acupuncture to their services.
“When a patient comes to me now, I can see their MRIs, I can review their x-rays, I can view injection notes, lab work, and medical history, making me more prepared prior to the visit,” Dr. Person offered. Having immediate access to a patient’s full medical records saves time and allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment plans, especially for first-time visits.

Dr. Person gave several examples of how the collaboration between providers has already benefited patients of Lakewood Health in the short time she has been on staff. “I’ve had two patients with really, really high blood pressure with headaches and other symptoms,” she shared. “And I could get them care immediately that day with other providers.”
In another case, an obstetrics provider referred a patient to Dr. Person whose baby was in a breech position. “We did two acupuncture treatments and then what’s called a Webster technique for chiropractic and the baby turned,” Dr. Person explained. “Then the patient didn’t have to have a c-section.”
The other medical providers at Lakewood are learning more about chiropractic care and acupuncture treatments from Dr. Person, and she, in turn, is learning more about their specialties. Dr. Josh Kempf, who is certified in osteopathic treatment, recently sat in on one of Dr. Person’s treatment sessions. Dr. Person will also be observing one of his sessions, so they can better understand the differences and similarities between the types of structural manipulation they perform.
NORTH STAR FAMILY MEDICINE
Most recently, Dr. Jennifer Person joined the Lakewood care providers in their Pillager clinic. Dr. Person is a Doctor of Chiropractic who also has extensive training and experience in

who has training in basic acupuncture for pain relief.
“We believe in offering care that complements and supports individual beliefs regarding health and wellness,” Dr. Lelcu said. Often, that means looking at alternatives to pharmaceuticals like IV nutrient treatments, dietary changes or referrals to other trusted providers in the area.
RIVERWOOD HEALTHCARE
Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin, Minnesota has always understood that health and wellness includes more than treating illness and injury. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the old saying goes. Improving the overall health of community members through proper nutrition is one way to do that.

Riverwood received a grant from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to procure food from local farmers and distribute food boxes through the Aitkin Farmers Market Hub. The first box distributed in January of 2025 contained apples, honey, maple syrup, wild rice, dry beans, oatmeal, oat groats, eggs, and ground pork. Boxes will be delivered each month from January through April 2025.
When it comes to their staff members, Riverwood is proud to offer midwifery services with Certified Nurse Midwife Megan Workman, along with two obstetrician/ gynecologists, Dr. Alisha Lindberg and Dr. Jennifer Tessmer-Tuck, as part of their women’s health provider team. Workman provides an alternative option while working closely with the OBGYN physicians on staff. Workman sees patients from the onset of menstruation through the post-menopausal years. She offers annual well-woman exams, preventive healthcare and counseling, gynecologic, family planning, birth control, preconception counseling, prenatal care, labor and delivery, postpartum care, breastfeeding assistance, and menopause and perimenopause.
INDEPENDENT AREA PROVIDERS
Multiple options in healthcare services, allowing for personal choice, is one of the great benefits of living in the Brainerd Lakes area. In addition to the growing integration of traditional and alternative health care, we have a fast-growing community of independent providers. The list of chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncture providers, and functional medicine practitioners in the area would cover several pages if we tried to list them all. We encourage you to do your own personal research into the options available to receive the best possible care for you and your loved ones.

Keep moving with confidence:
Expert footand ankle care
Dr. Stephen Schmid has a simple message for folks who experience foot or ankle pain: Don’t ignore it.
“When your feet or your ankles hurt, your whole body seems to hurt. It makes it difficult to exercise or be active, which is vital to your health,” said Schmid, a podiatrist with Cuyuna Regional Medical Center’s Foot & Ankle Clinic.
“Foot pain is not normal and it’s not something you just have to live with. If you’re having foot pain, I always recommend seeing a foot and ankle specialist right away,” Schmid said. He has treated patients who, unfortunately, waited months to seek care. “I think sometimes they just feel that the foot is not that important. … I think they find after a while that it does affect your quality of life because you are less active. You feel that you are less able to do what you were able to do before.”

The clinic generally can get patients in to be seen very quickly at one of its three locations. Schmid practices at the Crosby and Baxter sites. Fellow podiatrist Dr. Kyle Moore sees patients there and in Breezy Point. The staff also includes two physician assistants and two nurse practitioners. “We have a full team dedicated to high-quality foot and ankle care,” Schmid said.
Both he and Moore are Fellows in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and are certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
They recognize that you don’t need to be an avid walker or a marathon runner to experience pain in your feet or ankles. Myriad conditions can cause you to wince just walking from the couch to the kitchen. The Foot & Ankle team can treat everything from flat feet, bunions and hammertoes to deformities and breaks.
“We usually try to exhaust conservative care first before we talk about surgical interventions,” Schmid said. But when surgery is indicated, the CRMC Foot & Ankle Clinic physicians can perform procedures not available at all area clinics.
“Dr. Moore and I are both very well trained and are able to provide a pretty full complement of foot and ankle care, but even more specifically, foot and ankle surgical care,” Schmid said.
Both podiatrists also do ankle joint replacements, a procedure not as familiar to the public as knee and hip replacements.

Schmid joined Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in July 2024, in part to be closer to family. Previously, he spent 11 years practicing in Fergus Falls.
“What drew me to CRMC was the culture here. It’s an independent hospital system that really focuses on treating patients. It’s not your typical big corporate medicine type hospital system,” Schmid said, adding that there is a camaraderie among the staff “and just the feeling of community that CRMC offers.”
In addition to his work in the lakes area, Schmid is passionate about medical mission work. He has traveled to Molo, Kenya, three times in three years – and plans to return there in October. In Kenya, he sees patients of all ages who do not routinely have access to care. There is no X-ray equipment available at the mission clinic, which means Schmid cannot perform the complex procedures he can do in Minnesota. He does, however, repair bunions and hammertoes. Removing tissue masses as well as extra fingers and toes is also common.
“It’s very rewarding work and it’s very important work,” he said. “It’s very filling to the soul.”

Shop local at the Lakes Area
Growers Market
BY SARAH NELSON KATZENBERGER
The Lakes Area Growers Market brings as fresh as it gets locally made goods and produce close to home. The market operates in Brainerd, Baxter, and from May through October and provides a vast variety of locally grown produce and artisanal goods.
Market secretary Dawn Ykema said the markets have been operating for more than 15 years, making the markets something many area residents and summer visitors look forward to and make an annual tradition.
“We have lots of regular customers,” Ykema said. “We are definitely a communitydriven set of markets.”
The Growers Market vendors sell everything from fresh vegetables, dairy products, free-range eggs, grass-fed beef

and pork to canned goods like salsa, pickles, jams, and jellies. Shoppers will also find artisanal items like soaps, lotions, handcrafted jewelry, and textiles. And flowers. Lots of flowers.
“Each vendor has their own niche of goods that they sell,” Ykema said. “During the summer, we have fresh cut flowers that we sell, and in the fall we have potted mums.”
At the peak of the summer months, the market supports 10 or more vendors at a given location.
The Lakes Area Growers Markets can be found on Tuesdays in the Franklin Arts Center from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays in Baxter at the Westport Shopping Center from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A stroke can be life-changing and is a leading cause of long-term disability. Access to timely stroke care is critical in preventing these debilitating outcomes. However, rural areas often face unique challenges, including long travel times, limited resources and a shortage of specialists, which can delay treatment.
Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center is addressing these challenges by providing stroke care close to home. As a Primary Stroke Center, St. Joseph’s is dedicated to delivering timely and effective care to rural patients. Using telemedicine, stroke specialists are available 24/7, enabling rapid, time-sensitive treatment. This advanced, specialized care allows most stroke patients to receive treatment in their local community hospital, reducing the need for transfers to distant facilities
St. Joseph’s, in partnership with North Memorial Ambulance in Brainerd, has been recognized both statewide and nationally

for their collaborative efforts in stroke care. The team is currently leading a community awareness initiative that emphasizes early stroke recognition, prompt 911 activation, and swift treatment.
A stroke can quickly be recognized by anyone using the B.E.F.A.S.T guide below.
Local statistics reveal many community members experiencing stroke symptoms arrive at the hospital by private vehicle.

However, a stroke is a medical emergency, and activating 911 is essential for fast evaluation and timely treatment. Ambulance personnel are specially trained to monitor and address any complications during transport. They also pre-alert hospital staff, ensuring that the stroke team is prepared and ready to provide immediate care, significantly reducing treatment delays.
Advancements in stroke care have led to effective treatment options, and with prompt initiation of care, the likelihood of a full recovery improves dramatically. Time is critical — rapid response and treatment can make all the difference in patient outcomes.
The presence of a Primary Stroke Center at our community hospital is a significant asset to the Brainerd lakes area. The collaboration between Essentia HealthSt. Joseph’s Medical Center and North Memorial Ambulance continues to enhance health outcomes and provide high-quality care for rural stroke patients.

Acquire Mental Health guides clients in the right direction
Since 2018, Acquire Mental Health has established a home in the lakes area, providing its services to those in the community looking to maintain or improve their mental health, just as society begins to understand –and accept – the need for mental health care.
With social media permeating our society, people have access to information in a massive way compared to the past. This has helped normalize mental health, has helped provide education on mental health, but it has also increased misinformation. Acquire Mental Health’s providers can help guide people in the right direction in regard to what is best for their mental health. As well as help dispel any misinformation. Initially opening in Nisswa, Acquire Mental Health’s main office resides
north of Baxter. In 2023, a third location was opened in St. Cloud, and 17 staff members serve the three locations.
“We take a people-first approach,” clinic owner Jennifer Vaughn said “We appreciate and provide support to our providers to prevent burnt out… We are very interested in bettering the community, so if there’s a gap or a hole, we try to fill it.”
Acquire Mental Health can provide therapy to all ages. Services provided include therapy for individuals, family and couples. Newer services include EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy), Emotional Focused Couples and Family Therapy and Sand Tray Therapy. They have a provider with training in Parent-Children Interaction Therapy. They have also

started providing virtual ADHD and Autism testing (adults with verbal fluency only. Please note, it is not a neuropsychological evaluation).
Acquire therapists also utilize therapy dogs at times, but have a knack for connecting with patients even without the help of canine companions.
“Our therapists are pretty ‘themselves,’” Vaughn said. “We encourage authenticity, and sometimes that means it may not be a good fit … but we are always willing to have clients try a different therapist to see who fits best.”
Appointments can be made with Acquire Mental Health by phone at 218-820-7671 or by email at contact@ acquirementalhealth.com. Find them on Facebook, Instagram or at acquirementalhealth.com.

Growth and the expansion of health care
At Northern Pines Mental Health Center, we are growing. Why? Our focus is on the needs of the people we serve, and that need is changing. Advancements in AI alone tell us it’s not business as usual. There is great change in the world of technology — where new advancements are moving their way into our everyday life, whether we use it or not. At a minimum, this touches anxiety levels. One byproduct is that more people are acknowledging the need for care and feeding of their thought life.
Our agency responded to represent “The Expansion of Health Care.”
In May 2023, we opened a groundbreaking new service in Brainerd. Our first Mental Health Urgent Care Clinic at 823 Maple Street. The reaction was instant. Not only did it help those in immediate need of care, and in an environment that promotes calming, soothing forward momentum to handle the stressors; it also reduced strain on the system that seeks to collaboratively provide that assistance. We handle the side of health care that, in our minds, was being overlooked, to the detriment of communities’ well-being. We supposed this was a new service being offered as we found it nowhere else, and this was confirmed in an industry-wide mental
health conference from Washington, D.C., where the director, having visited and toured our Urgent Care Clinic, spotlighted our effort as unique and necessary in his opening remarks to the event. First, know we are here. Next, please come visit our Urgent Care Clinic, we’d be happy to show you what we are doing today. We are located at 823 Maple Street in Brainerd and are open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. every day. Walk-ins are welcomed.
To further the point of the expansion of healthcare, in 2022 we purchased an island. We are thinking differently about this as well. The efforts for Bay Lake Retreat Center are focused mainly on prevention. Think of it as “wellness island,” if you will. The setting is relaxed and vacation-like yet full of purpose! A simple boat ride over ushers in a shift as you depart mainland norms and move toward cognitive betterment. One of our current focuses is around respite care. Who helps the helper? We can offer skills and possibly some eye-opening training that is effectively more than a vacation to recharge you. Although a quick recharge is often just what this doctor ordered. Call 320-639-1433 or email us at island@ npmh.org to find out more that we are doing at Bay Lake Retreat Center. We offer corporate training, team building events
and custom to each need. We love groups that want to enhance the culture of their business toward a healthy mindset. This inevitably brings about better lives and productivity. And it’s fun! We are ACA (American Camp Association) Accredited. Preventative Mental Health is a great goal. The growth we are experiencing has led to an expansion into Walker as well. Opened in the fall of 2024, our newest location serves the needs of a new community to the north of us. We have been very graciously welcomed as a new member of this community to bring peace of mind to those who seek it from us. We will have outpatient services including therapy as well as our substance use program.
Lastly, with continued efforts to see things from our clients’ point of view, we are making great strides toward the ability for all to engage in and afford services. We are working with insurance companies to help make it easier to get any form of assistance we offer. We would encourage anyone willing to undertake improvements towards the everyday thoughts that make up a life.
We want you to be strong and free. You can have a healthier mind, body, and spirit. Please visit us at npmh.org for more information.

The MedSpa Maze 2025: Navigating the world of cosmetic treatments
DR. KURTIS WATERS
Medical spas have exploded in popularity, offering a range of non-surgical treatments to address various cosmetic concerns. As the medical director of Cascade MedSpa, I will be the first one to acknowledge that understanding what procedures are offered and what they do can be quite overwhelming to make sense of what may give you the biggest bang for your buck.
There is a constant deluge of procedures with different names, brands and claims making it tremendously confusing to the consumer of what works and what is hype. On this note, I give you three recommendations:
• First, be clear on what it is you are hoping to improve. Is it the lines, is it the pigment spots, is it the laxity of skin? The more defined your wish list may be…the better your Medspa can offer you your options.
• Find a Medspa that has providers that are experienced and have more than one tool in the chest to help with your list. If you have only one hammer…it is likely you are going to use the same hammer for everything hoping it works; this is sure to be a disappointment. At Cascade, our tool box is fully loaded with 10 lasers, two radiofrequency devices, four skin treatment machines, two fat reduction machines, two muscle stimulating machines, and five skin product lines. Our Advanced Practice Medical Estheticians have over 40 years combined experience in the Esthetic Industry. Combining that with an on-site medical director who is double board certified you can feel confident you are going to receive the education and service that you deserve.
• Understand that your journey to reaching your goals may take some time. For this reason, we continue to offer the lakes area’s first skincare membership program for our clients. This program reduces the cost of our services and products, and more importantly, it helps you to commit to obtaining goals.
Here’s a list of the industry’s top 10 procedures we have in our toolbox at CascadeMedSpa (CMS) and Advanced Specialty Associates (ASA). Visit our websites to check out our entire list.
NEUROMODULATORS (TOX) (ASA)
Neuromodulators like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are so popular because they’re SO effective. In general, neuromodulators work by relaxing targeted muscles, smoothing out wrinkles and lines, particularly around the eyes and forehead.
DERMAL FILLERS (ASA)
This diverse group of injectable solutions can add volume and definition to various areas of the face, from plumping cheeks to smoothening smile lines, wrinkles and folds.
LASER HAIR REDUCTION (CMS)
Laser hair reduction is the gold standard for those seeking freedom from the never-ending cycle of shaving, waxing or tweezing.
BBL/IPL PHOTOFACIAL
This treatment uses a broad spectrum of light to tackle sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone, revealing a brighter, more even complexion. And it also helps to stimulate the growth of new collagen too!
MICRONEEDLING (CMS) (VARIATIONS INCLUDE MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA), MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP AND INJECTIONS, MICRONEEDLING WITH RADIOFREQUENCY)
This minimally invasive treatment creates controlled microinjuries in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing response and stimulates collagen production, leading to improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, and diminished acne scars.
LASER SKIN RESURFACING (CMS AND ASA) (HALO®, PROFRACTIONAL, CO2, AND MICRO LASER PEEL)
For clients looking for dramatic improvements, laser skin resurfacing is ideal for achieving significant results but can come with longer downtime dependent on the laser chosen and desired results.
CHEMICAL PEELS
Exfoliates the top layer of skin, improving skin tone and texture, improving complexion and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles by maintaining collagen.
COOLSCULPTING®:
A non-invasive fat reduction procedure that freezes fat cells, causing them to die and be naturally eliminated from the body.
ADVANCED FACIALS (DERMALINFUSION®/GLO2FACIAL® BY GENEO)
A multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, hydrates the skin and improves complexion. Perfect prior to that special event because it leaves you with no downtime.
EMFACE®/EMSCULPT®
A combination treatment using radiofrequency/High intensity muscle stimulation. EMFACE can help restore volume, increase collagen and lift the corner of mouth and eyebrows. In body, EMSCULPT can help tone and give reduction of fat in the belly, arms and legs while toning muscles.
IN SUMMARY
At Cascade MedSpa, we are blessed to have experienced estheticians/staff that can help you navigate what goals you may have in your journey. From refreshing to rejuvenating…skin, hair and body the technology has improved for every person to appreciate their results and achieve their goals. I take pride as medical director that we are results-driven which results in satisfied clients. It is my hope you know more than you did before and you look and feel amazing and youthful going forward.

old press operator, underwent a shoulder replacement performed by Ben Robertson, M.D. Wood is a Brainerd lakes native and previously received successful knee replacements with Dr. Robertson and praised the attentive care he consistently receives at Astera Health.
Hip, knee, and shoulder replacement surgeries can significantly decrease or eliminate pain and improve mobility, allowing patients to enjoy activities like gardening and exercise with less discomfort.
Since its inception, the Astera Health Orthopedics program has shown remarkable growth. The team celebrated its 500th joint replacement in late 2021 and has doubled that number in just over two years.
TIPS FROM DR. ROBERTSON
Astera’s orthopedics team encourages patients with knee, hip, or shoulder pain that is limiting their activities to schedule a consultation. Symptoms to look for include
• joint swelling or pain,
• stiffness, especially when first standing up,
• loss of range of motion.
Treatment for joint osteoarthritis does not always involve joint replacement. We also treat joint pain with oral medication, physical therapy and joint injections. If these treatments become ineffective, we discuss joint replacement.
1,000 BIRTHS
Julie Meyer, M.D., celebrated her 1,000th vaginal birth on Dec. 18, 2024. Dr. Meyer assisted Kathryn Halonen with her birth on a cold winter day. Together, they welcomed baby Aven into the world.
With more than two decades of experience, Dr. Meyer enjoys being a trusted part of the Wadena community, caring for patients of all ages. “I love taking care of families and watching them grow,” said Dr. Meyer.

While there are many advantages to living in lake country, it also means being removed from the convenience of specialized health care that can be found in a large city. You might not know that celebrated specialists and awardwinning physicians are practicing in your communities, too, especially when it comes to your cardiovascular health.
Those being treated for heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions can see members of the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute right here in the Brainerd lakes area. The convenience of expert heart care is just a short journey away, with no more half-day trips to the Twin Cities.Award-winning and well-respected cardiologists live in the region and see patients in Baxter,
Crosby, Aitkin and Staples. Additional specialty trained cardiologists based out of Abbott Northwestern Hospital travel to Baxter and Crosby. Advanced imaging of the heart and blood vessels can be done locally, offering a comprehensive picture of the heart to aid in determining a treatment plan.
Telemedicine services are also available. These services make it possible for medical professionals and specialists from the system in the Twin Cities to see patients virtually, allowing them to address concerns and provide a complete care plan agreeable to the patient.
While some conditions may require surgical procedures that can only be performed at facilities in the metro, follow-up care can be done closer to
home. This means you can use your time to focus on making a full recovery instead of spending it in traffic.
The internationally recognized specialists at the Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute include physicians specializing in structural heart disease, heart failure, vascular disease, pulmonary hypertension and other cardiac conditions such as atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease.
Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute is fully committed to offering the finest in patient-focused care. Their local clinics’ full staff of professionals will treat you with the same expertise you can expect at a larger facility.
The only difference is how long it takes to drive home.

rewrite your future Rewriting your past so you can
Freedom from a painful past is available today. Often we share about our past in a negative light. We wonder why it happened that way, we think it must be a hard thing to let it go. I am here to share with you that perhaps the best thing you ever did is to rewrite your past so you can rewrite your future. How can you see it in a way that it happened exactly as it was meant to be for you to be the person that you are today?
If you are in a safe environment where the pain of the past is over, I ask you to start questioning the story you are telling.
Often we sabotage the current lives we have, living lives that are safe and much better than our pasts but we can’t see it because we are spending so much time trying to figure out why things happened the way they did.
How do we heal from this? First, we start with asking our brain some good questions and take an inventory of how much time you are spending there — realizing how much it influences your current day-to-day life. How many of your decisions are made through the filter of your past? How are these thoughts keeping you exactly where you are, day in and day out? Are you able to see the presence of these thoughts and the suffering they are creating?
Some thoughts you may be thinking about your past:
• It shouldn’t have happened like that.
• They should have protected me.
• I should have known better.
• Why was it easier for everyone else?

• Why did they leave me behind?
• How could they not have cared or known better?
• Why did they choose alcohol/drugs/ addiction over me?
These thoughts feel so very real and like they need answers, or we can’t go on, so we stay stuck searching. When we spend time believing these thoughts, we often feel sad, depressed, anxious, guilty, like a victim and angry. When we have these feelings, we often lash out at others or create self-hate, we spend time on our phones or in a bag of chips, or in a bottle of wine rather than allowing these feelings to be there, to see them as a part of us, allowing them to be a vibration in our body and then letting them go. It’s almost as if we need permission to let them go. Could it be that easy? You are in control of what you make those thoughts mean and how they make you feel. What if you could write the story you wanted to? One that gave you freedom and love and acceptance of what no longer is?

Optional thoughts to think about your past:
• Everything happened for me, not to me.
• My experiences were real, painful and they have made me into the beautiful person I am today.
• If I had a different past then the one I was given, I would not have worked as hard to get to where I am today.
• A terrible past created the exact picture I needed to see, so I know exactly what I don’t want to create today.
• Everyone who took care of me was doing the be st they could with what they knew.
• I am allowed to let any person and any memory go that no longer serves my best self.
If you allow yourself to start believing these thoughts, you create feelings of empowerment, confidence and ownership of your life. You can feel calm, peaceful, loving and in control of your life as it stands today which results in you being able to be present and alive on a daily basis. You have peace in your mind to live the life we have been gifted.
To me, that is true freedom — to be able to be in your life without spending hours thinking about old things that happened, how you need to try and fix someone or how to protect yourself from something that has been over for years.
The best, most powerful result is you have true freedom to handle anything that comes your way. You decide how the story gets told.
You grow and expand beyond your wildest dreams.
You have freedom from the chains of your past.
“The best part about your past is that it is over.”

8 ways to communicate
with someone living with Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, and too many of us know someone affected. In Minnesota alone, 102,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s and 164,000 unpaid caregivers are supporting them. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women and each year the disease takes more lives
than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined in the U.S.
For those living with dementia, changes in communication can be challenging. In the early stages, the person may have difficulty finding the right words or organizing their ideas, and later they may rely more on gestures. Regularly checking

hearing and eyesight is important, as vision and hearing loss could also be present.

If you’re communicating with someone living in the early or middle stages of Alzheimer’s, there are ways to adapt your style to meet the person where they are. Avoid making assumptions about their ability to communicate, as dementia affects each person differently, and abilities may vary based on the situation or over time. Following the tips below can improve understanding and limit frustration for everyone.
Ways to communicate with someone living with Alzheimer’s
• Face the person when you speak so they can see and hear you. Minimize distractions such as having a TV on or being in a crowded room. Speak directly to the person rather than to their caregiver or companion.
• Adjust the tone of your voice to keep it calm and relaxed. Consider using humor to lighten the mood and make communication easier.

• Use simple language that is clear and concise. It may help to focus on asking one question at a time or use ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions.
• Let them set the pace of the conversation. Give them time to think through an answer. You may need to become comfortable with allowing s everal seconds of silence. Slow down your speech if needed.
• Allow the person to fully get their thoughts, feelings and needs out and reassure them. Be careful not to interrupt unless help is requested. Repeat or rephras e your question if asked.
• Be patient and avoid insistence if you are not receiving the response you seek. The person may need to take a break, and you can try again later if needed.
• Avoid arguing and overcorrecting. Actively listen to find the meaning in what the person says. If they say something you don’t agree with, it may be best to let it be.
• Consider written notes, emails or texts when spoken words seem confusing.
You may want to make additional adjustments in crowded or lively group settings as they can be overwhelming for those living with dementia. For example, if the person expresses a desire to go home, you can try moving to a quieter area or going for a short walk. Overall, it’s important to pay attention to the person’s reactions and stay flexible. Learn what provides calm and don’t be afraid to reach out for support — you are not alone.
