Who won BEST Small Town in Minnesota? NISSWA DID! Thanks to WCCO (our Minneapolis CBS Affiliate), the community of Nisswa was chosen as the Best Small Town in Minnesota. The category is actually “Best Small Town with population of 5,000 or less”. There are approximately 740 towns in Minnesota and 594 have populations of 5,000 or less. According to the 2010 census, Nisswa’s population is 1,941. Although, with beautiful lakes, fantastic amenities, seasonal homes and thousands of annual visitors, the population SOARS to much more in the summer. Nisswa started as a railroad community. When the railroad first arrived, it opened up the area for tourism, and what once took 4 days to travel by car from Minneapolis, now took 6 hours by rail. When asked about “why Nisswa?”, you’ll hear things like “I loved growing up here, so when I was done with college I wanted to move back here and raise my family in Nisswa”.
