A Sightseeing tour of the city of Rovinj, canapés and wine tasting in a traditional ambience of the old town wine cellar Kantinon The sightseeing tour includes expert guidance through the narrow streets of Rovinj, from Balbi Arch and the Kalifi Palace to the grand Baroque church of St. Euphemia situated at the very top of Rovinj, famous for keeping the secret of the stone sarcophagus preserving the body of St. Euphemia and, at last, a visit to the unique eco-museum ‘The Batana House’ dedicated to the little Rovinj boat. Vrsar - A Sightseeing Tour We begin the sightseeing of Vrsar by visiting the church of St. Foška built in the 17th century right next to the city gates. Today a sacral collection of artworks is on display on the church premises. Then we will visit Kaštel, the former residence of the Bishop of PoreË, mentioned in historic documents in the 12th century. The medieval Vrsar formed around Kaštel, the walls built in the 15th century prove that, in the antique times Vrsar spread along the coast and had salt pans located at the bottom of the bay. Vrsar was visited two times by the famous seducer Giacomo Casanova and one of the city streets bears his name. The parish church of St. Martin - the patron saint of the city, with its foundations set in the 19th century, is located in the main square. At the bottom of the hill, at a unique location next to the sea, stands the oldest sacral edifice in Vrsar - the Basilica of St. Mary of the Sea, a fine example of Romanesque architecture in which concerts and banquets are held in the summer months. A Trip to Bale and Monkodonjo We depart for the small town of Bale in which dinosaur and other prehistoric animal remains are conserved. On our way back we will visit the prehistoric castle of Monkodonjo - a fortified settlement with about 1000 citizens. Artefacts show that people lived there long time ago, far back between 1800 and 1200 B.C. Its position, 81 meters above sea level, provide us a magnificent view of the surroundings and the old rock fence, 1 km long and 3 m wide and high, enabled the sustaining of life in this settlement for 600 years. On our way back we will take a ‘sweet break’ and stop for some cake and a cup of coffee. A Trip to Pula and Vodnjan When one speaks of antique historic remains in Istria, then surely Colonia Iulia Pola Pollentia Herculanea or, in today’s language, Pula, simply must be mentioned. Many grand monuments from the Roman period are conserved here - the Arena, an amphitheatre constructed during the rule of Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus, the Forum, Double Gates, Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergians, the remnants of the ‘Little Theatre’ and a mosaic called ‘The Punishment of Dirce’ - all dating from the period between the 1st and 3rd century. Pula flourished in the 19th century, during the reign of the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, when it became its most important war port of which testify its numerous defensive fortifications. On our return from Pula we will stop in the small town of Vodnjan, a town that nourishes a long tradition of olive growing and wine production, where we offer the tasting of local produce. A visit to the church of St. Blaise follows - a church with the biggest bell tower in Istria, in which the mummified bodies of three saints have been laid to rest. The bodies of the saints withhold an unexplained secret because they have been able to withstand decay in spite of a long time passing. In addition to this phenomenon, the church contains an extraordinary and valuable collection of sacral objects which numbers more than 350 relics of 250 different saints! A Trip to PoreË While visiting PoreË, a former Roman colony, the Euphrasian Basilica is a must-see tourist point (a UNESCO-protected monument dating from the 5th century) - its grand mosaics, baptisteries, atrium and bishopric all testify the beginning of Christian history in the area. PoreË was, like Pula, a Roman colony with the arrangement of streets - Decumanus and Cardo - typical of Roman towns, and the temples of Neptune and Mars also show the Roman influence. The numerous city palaces testify a centuries-long rule of Venice. After the sightseeing follows wine tasting (or codfish tasting - a fish that symbols the Venetian rule in Istria). A Trip to Pazin and Motovun This trip marks the medieval period in Istria. The most preserved medieval edifice in Istria is the Pazin Castle - constructed on a cliff above the Pazin burrow in which the Ethnographic Museum of Istria is located today. Even Jules Verne wrote about the legend that connects the Pazin Castle and burrow with the Lim Gulf in his novel titled Mathias Sandorf. After Pazin follows the sightseeing tour of Motovun - another medieval city fortified by walls from which a miraculous view spans on its surroundings, followed by truffle product tasting. A Trip to the Brijuni Islands A trip to the National Park Brijuni includes transportation to Fažana, a small city opposite the Brijuni Islands, known even from Roman times, called Vasianum after the local factory of amphora’s and various dishes. It has always been a place of fishermen, but also farmers that drained wine and olive oil from the red earth. From here we continue our journey by boat to the National Park Brijuni. The trip to the biggest island of the archipelago called Veli Brijun, with expert guidance, includes a tour of the natural beauties and cultural heritage (an olive tree dating back to the 4th century, an alley from the year 1905, a safari park, a Byzantium military camp from the 2nd century B.C., a Roman villa in the Bay of Verige from the 1st century, a visit to the art collection ‘Tito’ on the Brijuni Islands and the church of St. Germania from the 15th century with its exhibits) by tourist train. A Trip to Buzet, Hum and RoË Buzet is a city on a secluded hill above the fertile river valley of the Mirna, inhabited since the prehistoric days. Today’s old city core developed in the 18th century under the influence of Venetian Baroque. Circular walls with bulwarks and towers also date from the period of Venetian rule. The Heritage Museum is located in the 17th century Bigatto Palace and it contains an archaeological and ethnological collection: an old Buzet kitchen is displayed here, as well as a collection of farming tools, apparels and a weaving loom. In the area within the old city walls, in its original location, you can still find the museum exhibits of combing and blacksmithing trades and old pharmacies. The old town bakery is located within the Buzet bastion, where once, on the occasion of upcoming fairs, holidays and Sundays, bige bread was baked. Then we will see the picturesque town of RoË followed by Hum - the smallest city in the world. That is the homeland of biska - a medicinal beverage made from domestic brandy and mistletoe leaves. You will taste it and feel of its curative properties and smoothness. It is also the home of the Glagolitic alphabet and Croatian literacy. There are many rural estates and taverns in the vicinity where the groups will have an opportunity to taste domestic brandies and local specialities. A Visit to a Local Farm and the Istrian boškarin We take you to visit the pride of the Istrian farmer - the boškarin - it is an Istrian term for a type of cattle called the Istrian ox. It was an Istrian farm animal but now the mechanization has won, there are only about a hundred of them left. The relationship that the Istrian farmer has with its boškarin is very interesting as well as the traditional forms of communication between the animal and its master during field ploughing. Included a guide, an hour-long presentation of the domestic boškarin in a unique ambiance while enjoying a domestic appetizer and cakes.

Following the Trails of Forgotten Trades in Istria A trip to Pazin to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Istria located in one of the most conserved medieval fortresses, Kaštel, built on the cliffs overlooking Fojba - a picturesque Pazin burrow into which the Pazin creek flows. After an expert presentation of the ethnographic heritage of Istria there will be a presentation about weaving held on a weaving loom. Weaving in Istria was exclusively a male profession thus the presentation will be held by one of the last living Istrian weavers. He took up the trade after his father. On our return trip the routes lead us into the inland of the Istrian peninsula through a hilly landscape of fresh and vivid spring or warm autumn colours to a farm where our hosts will exhibit some of the old trades of Istria, and exactly how it once was. We will sit next to the fireplace and eat traditional meals typical of the area and time in which those trades were an everyday thing. They still exist here today, but unfortunately finding them is not as easy as it used to be. We will set off in Land Rovers along macadam trails in Istria to the abandoned medieval city of Dvigrad, through Kanfanar and the trail of Captain Morgan to the Renaissance square of Sveti VinËenat. The entire north face is the stone castle Grimani that spreads all the way to Bale, a former Roman fort in which the Bembo Palace was embellished during Venetian rule. Not far from Bale we stop at the oldest historic location - the prehistoric castle of Monkodonjo - a fortified settlement in which people lived even far back between 1800 and 1200 B.C. A Trip to Harvest Mediterranean Produce /grapes, figs, olives/ We will equip you with the necessary tools and lead you into the special experience of harvesting some of the produce of Istria, depending on the submitted harvesting calendar. The harvest will be a real adventure and when it is all done, the best harvester will be pronounced! After the harvest, and depending on the weather conditions - we will have a picnic or go to a nearby rural household for a meal cooked from the produce you have just harvested. Our wish is that you learn how these products are used in Istrian gastronomy, and above all, to experience their exquisite quality and taste first hand! A Demonstration of Net Weaving and the Use of Braided Rope in Demijohn Production Since glass bottles were once rare and valuable, to keep them from breaking, each bottle was protected with the use of braided rope which, at the same time, protected wine or other content from sun rays. In ‘The Batana House’ eco-museum in addition to the demonstration of rope work, the ancient skill of weaving and mending fishing nets, you will be able to try this workshop and make demijohns by braiding rope for encasing bottles and in that way you will contribute to the preservation of this old skill and custom. The demijohn braiding starts with the neck of the bottle. You need to determine the length and number of strings for the weft as well as how and with which knot you will braid the backbone string which spirally coats the bottle. A string from natural hemp of various widths, and a length of 1 to 2 meters, is used. The knots for shaping the demijohn are a combination of Arabic macrame (shallow, flat) and sailor knots. By dipping the strings in various naturally produced colours (pine bark), the bottles can be braided in different colours. Included expert guidance, basic accessories (rope, glass bottle), area. A Batana Ride around Rovinj Old Town with Tasting of Fish Snacks in the Spacio (1) On the dock right next to ‘The Batana House’, we will board a batana boat and ride along the rocky coast of the old city which exposes Rovinj from its most picturesque side - from the sea. The disembarkment will be in the spacio a traditional underground tavern and a place where fishermen gather and socialize. Truffle Search and Tasting We will journey to a part of Istria known to be the habitat of truffles. This is the area around Buzet - city of truffles, Livada - the world centre of truffles, where the world’s biggest truffle was found which made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records.
