An Abbreviated History of Good Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church

Founded in 1863

MuchofGoodHope'sAfrican American historyhasbeenlost,stolen, forgotten,ordestroyed. Thefollowing individualsaidedintheresearchofthechurch:Mrs.VictoriaMack,Mrs.RebeccaSmith,Mrs.LeilaHarrison,and otherchurchmembers,including informationtaken fromAfricanMethodismin SouthCarolina,aBicentennial Focusby Dr.Ricky Hill, a professorofHistoryatSouth Carolina State University, Mr. ClarenceTobin,a local historian,andtheOrangeburgArchives,researchrevealedthefollowinghistoricalinformation.

GoodHopeChurch'sfirstmembersemergedfromslaverywhentheymetinathickgroveoftreescalledabush harbor;Thefirstpastor was ReverendGoings, the first Presiding Elder was ReverendPruitt, andMr. Daniel AlexanderPaynewasthefirstBishop. TheoriginalstewardswereMr.AndrewRoss,Mr.BurlHuggins,Sr.,Mr. BurlHuggins,andMr.JamesSummers,Sr.,andtheoriginaltrusteeswereMr.CamdenWade,Mr.AmosBallard, Mr.Jim Cleckley,andMr.GabeHuggins.

Good Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded between 1863 and 1864, its original annual conferencewastheCentralConference,andtheChurchDistrictwasinOrangeburg. Amemberdonatedtheland, and membersconstructed the originalchurchbuilding. Thestructure ofthe oldsanctuary was complete on March12, 1897, andthe cornerstonewas laid undertheleadership ofReverendW.D.Chappelle onApril12, 1897,withPresidingElderW.McDuffieofficiated.Severalindividualsworkedtogethertoorganizeandestablish GoodHopeA.M.E.Church. Mr.ScipioHuggins,Mrs.EllenBusby,Mr.BurlHuggins,Mrs.RitaHuggins,Mr.Frank Coad,Mr.A.J.Ballard,andMrs.VictoriaHuggins.

InstructorsfromClaflin CollegeandSouthCarolinaState Collegevisited andchoseGoodHopeasasightfora MasonicTemplelocatedonthechurchgrounds.

SomeoftheministerswhoservedtheGoodHopeCircuitovertheyearswerethefollowing:ReverendsGoings, Player,Richardson,H.L.Haynes,Brooks,Coaxon, F.J.McFadden,W.Walker Jones,C.C.Burgess,PaulCarmichael, J.L.Fogle,C.L.Bars,J.J.Jackson, O.A.Morant, JohnScott,Lemon, W.K.Wilson,ClarenceBennett,HarveySutton, Sr., RobertC. Freeman,Jr.,Dr. JuenarrlKeith, RonnieBrown, AlfredBradley,JohnA. Lewis, and ReverendDr. GeorgeannT.Pringle.

Godhas called seven members fromourcongregationto preach His word: ReverendRobertLewis Cleckley, ReverendElla Bamberg,ReverendRobertaJackson,ReverendTiffiny Jamison,ReverendJanieAllen,Reverend SonoviaGuinyard,andReverendDorothyRyant.

Many churchmembers were elected to serveat ourArea,District, Conference,andEpiscopallevels. Brother RogerCleckley was elected President of the Seventh EpiscopalDistrict Lay Organization; BrotherNathaniel StevensonwaselectedpresidentoftheCentralConferenceSonsofAllen.

In1990,therewasaneedforanewandmoremodernbuilding,sothemembersvotedtoconstructanewchurch; ReverendHarveySutton,Sr., acarpenterbyvocation,playedaleading rolein buildingthe newsanctuary. On Sunday,June 21,1992, BishopF.C. James, with Presiding ElderR. L. McCants, officially dedicated GoodHope AfricanMethodistEpiscopalChurch,locatedat1849CarverSchoolRoad,Cope,SouthCarolina.

In 1993attheSouthCarolina CentralAnnualConference,BishopJohnHurstAdamsrecommendedthatGood HopeAMEChurchbecomeastation churchunderthepastoralcareofReverendHarveySutton, Sr. Basedon thoserecommendationsand thatofthe Quarterly Conference,the GoodHopeCircuit underthe leadershipof PresidingElderB.P.Bostonwasestablished.

In 2011 TheReverendDr. GeorgeannTylerPringle was assignedto GoodHope AME Church, its firstfemale pastor. ReverendPringle,an energetic, innovative servantleader,came with a missionandvision toincrease theChurchmembershipandenhancecommunityoutreach. Withherleadership,thechurchcontinuestogrow andprosper.

For159years,GodblessedGoodHopeAMEChurch,andweaskforcontinuedblessingsthatwewillcontinueto growandthrive.

It is with joy and thanksgiving that we greet you in the name of the redeeming, forgiving,andlovingnameofJesusChrist.Onbehalfoftheepiscopalsupervisor,Mrs. PhyllisN.Green,andI,wewelcomeyoutoanewdayintheSeventhEpiscopalDistrict ofthe AfricanMethodist EpiscopalChurch. Congratulationsto the GoodHopeAME Churchfamily, the ReverendDr.GeorgeannT. Pringle, and Presiding Elder Charles Young,ourhostsforthisyear’soutstandingannualconference.

Theannual conferenceseasonisaperiodofwitness andtestimony ofthe faithfulnessofGodaswe sharein the ministry ofChrist. Wecelebratethe leadersand membersofourcongregationsthroughouttheSeventh Episcopal District for putting God First at the forefront of your endeavors to serve. Despite the many challenges,thechurchremainsaspaceofempowerment,restoration,andhealingformanywhoaresuffering worldwide.Weacknowledgeandhonoreverylaymember'sdedicationtotheAMEChurch.

Forthepastyear,wehavelearnedwhatitmeanstotrustGodwhentheoddsarestackedagainstus.Pastors areproclaimingtheGospelinhybridworshipformats onlineandin person.Churchmembersarenavigating howtosafelygathertobuildcommunityonceagain.Yet, Godsustainsuswith enthusiasmanddetermination to overcomeourchallengeswith greatfaith. Duringtheannualconference,we will rejoiceoverthe reports frompresidingelders,pastors,componentministries, andthe conferencecommittees. Wewill worshipGod forprotectionthroughthepandemicandpraisetheLordinadvanceforthepromiseofhope.

Ourthemeforthe2022-2023AnnualConferenceYearis"Reset-Restore-Reclaim." Thesekingdomgoalswill leadourentireDistrict's ministry effortsin thenext12monthsaswe continuetobethechurchofAllen. We askeverypresidingelder district, localchurch,andcomponentministry to anchortheir effortsin thesame themesothatweareunitedforkingdombuilding. Wewill reset howwedochurchandourmindsettowork. Our pride for African Methodism calls us to restore our heritage, commitment toward social justice, and passionfornewministry. Finally,weprayforafreshfireaswe reclaim thefervorforMethodistworshipthat is Spirit filled. The Seventh Episcopal District is laser focused on spiritual growth that is innovative and sustainable.

As we march towards anotherlevel on our ministry journey, we hopeyou will believe Godfor a spiritual explosionintheAMEChurch.Stayprayerfulandfaithfulineverythingthatyoudo.God,doitagain,Amen.

Sheispassionate aboutyouth andsenior ministries anddevelopsprogramsforboth; enhancing their spiritual and social growth. Dr. Pringle has daringly refused to accept mediocrityinministry. ShehasacceptedthechallengeofbeingtheFirstFemale PastorofthedynamicGoodHopeAMEChurch,Cope,S.C. Dr.Pringle,alongwith herhusbandof51years,Bro.CharlesissteadfastinworkingfortheKingdomof Godand spreading the GoodNews. Herpreachingand teaching arebiblically based,andsheisHolySpirit filled andledwhichhasmanifestedtransformation inthelives ofmany.

GoodHopeAMEChurchis a350 membercongregationwith arichtradition of Christiancaring,communityadvocacy,andinvolvement.

Ministries of the churchinclude Music Ministry with four(4) Choirs, Dance & Drama Ministries, Missionary (WMS), Lay Organization, Audio/VideoMinistry, YoungPeople’s Department, Christian Education Ministry, which includes ChurchSchool,Bible Study, andChildren’sChurch,andSonsof AllenMinistry.

GoodHopeAME Churchcontinuestobuild onthe tradition ofits foundersin serviceto thepresentage.The churchoffersministries gearedto reachthe entire community: FoodBankandTelehealth Ministries. Good Hopehastheir501c3fortheirChildDevelopmentandLearningCenterwhich offersanAfterSchoolProgram, andSummerTutorialServices.Thechurchhasanoutreachministrythatassistspeopleinthecommunity who cometothechurchforhelp.

Themissionofourchurchistoministertothespiritual, social,physical,andemotionaldevelopmentofallpeople. The GoodHopeAMEChurchfamily continuestoemphasizeChristianity asajoyouswayoflife.Weencourageyou toworshipwith usatGoodHopeand/orconsidermembershipif you’reseekinga churchhome.You’llfinda caringcongregationthatcherishesitstraditionsbutisalsocommitted tocontemporaryChristianwitness.
