In 2022 a group of BRAG Ann Arbor members renewed our community service effort aimed at helping local veterans, known as Help for the Homefront. Justin Corry of Corry Contracting, a former Marine himself, stepped up to lead the effort. With a supportive Remodelers Council, his mission to assist local veterans with home improvements began.

After contacting veterans groups, Justin met Peter Wasilewski. Peter had served in the 2nd reconnaissance battalion, 2nd Marine division out of Camp Lejeune, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1969. He was among many veterans exposed to toxic Agent Orange chemicals during his service. This led to Diabetes, and in turn amputation of his fingers and leg, confining him to a wheelchair. Both issues have created mobility issues within his home, including the inability to use his shower.

Justin put together an ambitious plan to completely remodel the Wasilewski’s bathroom - the top priority to dramatically improve his quality of life. In May, the BRAG Ann Arbor Foundation awarded $17,500 to help cover the project costs, raised from the BRAG members. Many contributors volunteered labor and donated materials as well.

The completely remodeled bathroom includes:

All new fixtures, finishes and surfaces

Bright lighting and adequate ventilation

Peter and his loving wife Liz are grateful for the new bathroom in their Scio Farms home. Yet, they still need additional work done to make their home safe and useful. This is where you can help.

Previous contractors left their kitchen in disrepair. Our goal is to install new kitchen cabinetry, with solid surface countertops, new fixtures, appliances, lighting and flooring. For safety, a new deck surface and rails are needed.

Situated on 2.5 acres just outside of Ann Arbor, this 2,000 sq ft home was designed and built to exacting standards with modern sustainability and age-in-place accessibility at the forefront.

The kitchen, dining and living spaces are at the core of the home, with an office neatly tucked behind the kitchen. The primary bedroom suite is located at the end of the main circulation axis. Each living space, including the primary suite, is accessible on the main floor, while the second floor provides two guest rooms, a guest bath and an oversized landing, serving as a sitting room.

The floor to ceiling south facing windows capture the warmth of the winter sun, heating the insulated concrete floor for passive solar gain. During the summer, the overhangs shield the home’s interior from the harshest sunlight of the day, keeping the house cool without sacrificing natural lighting. The first story is blanketed with solar panels, capturing energy to be stored inside a battery room off of the garage.

In addition to its sustainability and accessibility, this home offers expansive indooroutdoor living spaces. On the south side of the home, large French doors leading to a south facing terrace and garden are perfect for hosting family and friends. A generously covered front porch on the east side of the home welcomes guests, while the north and west entrances lead out to their expansive wooded lot with native Michigan foliage.

ALPHA DESIGN+BUILD

300 Riverview Drive, Ann Arbor

This home is a classic, split-level, Ann Arbor mid-century modern home situated among the trees near the Huron River. Typical of the time period, the kitchen and dining rooms were compartmentalized resulting in a centralized small, box-shaped kitchen that no longer served the family’s needs. The goal of this project was to expand/open the kitchen to take advantage of the gorgeous views of the forest in the backyard. The tiny kitchen had the original build-in cabinetry that was falling apart, soffits with low ceilings, fluorescent lights fixtures and an outdated Corian countertop.

The new kitchen pays homage to the mid-century style by replacing the old white cabinets with textured laminate, reflective of the natural color tones of the time. To not become overwhelming with one color, painted white upper cabinets were mixed in on the back wall, along with herringbone hand-crafted white subway tiles. The clients wanted to incorporate shades of blue, so navy was chosen for the wine racks and bookcases that showcase the family’s travels and interests.

A durable grey-veined quartz countertop with a snack bar overhang completes the massive island where the family can enjoy meals and homework time together in this open, clean-lined, modern kitchen.

While they loved their Ann Arbor Hills location, the owners of this 1966 house enjoy entertaining and found the tiny rooms cramped their family lifestyle.

Redesigning and expanding the first floor added a large, open kitchen with skylights over the dual islands. A walk-in pantry provides much-needed space for storage and cooking. In addition, an elegant butler’s pantry links the new formal dining room and kitchen, providing space for serving food and drinks. On the second floor, a new primary suite boasts a fresh design with a large bedroom, spacious walk-in closet, spa-like bathroom, and a home gym.

From the outside, the addition blends right in. It’s hard to tell that this house is much larger than before the remodel!

ACHESON BUILDERS

Tasteful Update of a Custom Home in the Ann Arbor Hills Neighborhood

1505 Arlington Blvd, Ann Arbor

On a corner lot, this 1926 home sits hidden amidst luscious gardens. Acheson Builders was called in to replace all the windows with quality wood windows, the challenge being to maintain the original style and use existing openings.

Later, we were invited to design a reorganization of the upstairs space. We added extra living space by widening an existing dormer and rearranging walls, creating a new bedroom for the young daughter, a new bathroom, and remodeling another bedroom and bath as a handsome guest suite. These rooms feature striking panel molding, with style carried over from the original home.

Last year we were asked to remodel the basement, adding loads of organized storage spaces with shelving and cabinetry to include a wine cellar/pantry, a room with deep shelving for larger items, and a very useful laundry room. The large play area and workout space also boasts more shelves for kids’ toys.

Most recently, the homeowners knew that Jim Acheson’s design skills would be perfect for their desired exterior work: including a new shed, garden gate, walkway leading to the rear patio area, a pergola, plus an outdoor cooking island all accompanied by landscaping and lighting to accentuate the beautiful back yard.

This receptive 1960’s colonial had served the homeowner’s busy family for almost 20 years. With a focus on family and neighborhood pride, the homeowners tasked Giraffe with building an addition that would blend harmoniously with the scale and character of the surrounding houses. The homeowners also asked that Giraffe consider ways to upgrade and modernize the exterior of the home.

Starting with the massing of the addition, the focus was to seamlessly stretch the second floor over the garage. A small, auxiliary shed structure introduces an asymmetry to the otherwise uniform home. Careful placement of modern window boxes add another layer of detail and function. New horizontal shou sugi ban siding on the second floor and shed combined with new, modern, black casement windows to give the home a sleek yet timeless feel. Lastly, an overlay of thermally modified ash siding clad the walls and ceiling of the front porch, serving as a warm, inviting entry to the home.

On the interior, we focused on creating a bright, yet comfortable series of spaces. New windows in the primary bedroom provide panoramic views of the yard and woods beyond. The primary closet is brimming with built-in storage as well as a stacked washer/dryer. The crown jewel of the addition is the primary bathroom which combines beautiful marble and crisp white tile and ample natural light. The space is punctuated with an ebony stained cherry vanity that’s shape references the push and pull of the window boxes on the home’s exterior.

‘Make my kitchen more open and brighter’ is a request we hear repeatedly. Doing this in a 1920’s classic Burns Park home was the fun challenge we had. By developing multiple design ideas early on and helping our clients visualize them in 3D, we were able to move walls and reconfigure the spaces with confidence. The opening between the kitchen and dining room was widened to allow the spaces to flow. The traffic pattern from the side driveway to the kitchen was reconfigured to allow for a dedicated mudroom with gracious storage. A classic Burns Park home was reconfigured to take advantage of every square foot possible. The modest-sized first floor was awkward with small spaces that did not flow. Aside from aesthetic updates, the homeowners wanted a two-cook kitchen where they could engage with family and friends while having a better connection to the adjoining living area and outdoor spaces. Without adding any square footage, the first floor was transformed into a more open plan and the kitchen nearly doubled in size. The home was in need of some major repairs and system updates, and the remodel presented the perfect opportunity to install a high-velocity AC system and update the insulation.

Selecting the Right Remodeler For You

Start with an idea of what you want to do, and make a prioritized list of your needs, wants, and dreams. Collect photos from magazines and web sites that show things that you like. It’s helpful if you identify what it is that you like about each photo. The more clearly you can describe your project, the more likely you will be able to clearly convey your goals to a remodeling professional.

Think about how you plan to use the remodeled space. Be sure to consider furniture size and placement, traffic patterns through the home, lighting and electrical needs, etc.

Calculate your budget, including construction costs, furnishings, and landscaping (if applicable). Talk to lenders and find out how much you can borrow and at what cost.

Get referrals from the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor and the Remodelers Council of Greater Ann Arbor. Also talk with friends, family, neighbors and co-workers who have remodeled their home. Architects, trade contractors, building material suppliers, home inspectors, and lenders are also great sources for referrals.

Interview a few remodelers regarding your project. Some questions you may want to ask include:

• Does the remodeler carry insurance that protects you from claims arising from property damage or jobsite injuries?

• How long has the company been in business under this name? Longevity suggests financial security.

• Does the remodeler have a track record of successful projects similar to the one you are planning?

• Does the remodeler actively participate in a trade organization such as BRAG Ann Arbor?

This and similar organizations help to keep their members informed about new products, construction techniques, business practices, and industry issues. Participation demonstrates a remodeler’s commitment to professionalism and the remodeling industry.

Check references from previous and current customers of the remodeler. Make sure you ask the remodeler for this list. Some of the questions to ask these contacts are:

• Would you hire this company again?

• Did they maintain a neat jobsite, and clean up regularly? Did they haul away debris in a timely manner?

• Did they order materials in a timely manner so that your job could be started and completed on time and on budget?

• Did you find the remodeler easy to work with? Did the remodeler keep you informed as the job progressed?

The relationship between a remodeler and client is a very important one. You need to feel comfortable with the remodeler and confident that this company will do the work according to your plans, budget, and specifications. Do you feel that this person listens to you and understands your needs and wants, and can work with you to ensure that the plans for your job accurately reflect your expectations and your budget?
