Where complex problems meet great minds Our doctors were the first in the world to successfully perform surgery on a baby still in the womb. They also developed life-saving treatments for premature infants whose lungs aren’t fully developed. These advances were possible because UCSF scientists work together with our doctors and patients – bringing discoveries and new treatments to patients as quickly as possible.

Care specially designed for children UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital offers the full spectrum of health care services for infants, children and adolescents at all stages of health including primary care, outpatient surgery, emergency services, inpatient and intensive care. Our board-certified specialists are trained to meet the special physical, social and emotional needs of children.

Neurology and neurological surgery The Pediatric Brain Center at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is home to many innovative programs including the nation’s first neurointensive care nursery. These programs are staffed by many of the country’s leading experts. Fetal treatment The UCSF Fetal Treatment Center was the first program to develop fetal surgery techniques and has more experience with fetal surgery than any other institution in the world. Surgery Surgeries are performed at the Children’s Surgery Center, a special suite of rooms designed to meet the unique surgical needs of children and their families. The center is set up to allow children and parents to be together as much as possible. Heart care The Pediatric Heart Center is a multidisciplinary team, working together to provide comprehensive care to the fetus, infant, child and adolescent with heart disease, and to adults with congenital heart disease. Organ transplant As one of the oldest transplant programs in the nation, we are a leader in pediatric kidney and liver transplantation with one-year survival rates well above the national average. We’re also one of the few programs in the country that offer intestinal transplants for children.

Cancer and blood disease Specialists at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital treat nearly all pediatric cancers. Our services include the Cancer Risk Program, the largest program of its kind in Northern California, which serves families with a history of cancer. Gastroenterology UCSF pediatric gastroenterologists diagnose and manage digestive, nutritional and liver disorders in patients from infancy to 21 years old.

Birth Center World renowned for its contributions to women’s health and obstetrics, our 29-bed Birth Center cares for women with normal pregnancies and those who need experts in high-risk pregnancies, prenatal diagnosis and specialized neonatal care. Diabetes The Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes is a comprehensive program that includes doctors, dietitians, patient educators and social workers. Our team works closely with families to provide treatment, information, support and guidance in caring for children with diabetes. In addition to caring for patients, the program conducts research on new diabetes treatments. Compassionate care meets clinical expertise Critical care for newborns For nearly 50 years, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital has made groundbreaking discoveries in the care of critically ill newborns. In 1964, we established one of the world’s first intensive care nurseries, where today we treat more than 1,000 babies each year.

Our team is one of the world’s most experienced in the care of newborns who need specialized care. Expert care when it’s needed most Pediatric Emergency Department The only pediatric emergency department (ED) in San Francisco located within a children’s hospital, our family-friendly pediatric ED features roundthe-clock care by doctors, nurses and other specialists trained in pediatric emergency medicine. Whether for a minor or major emergency, children are treated in a child-friendly setting designed with kids in mind. The clinic is available to all families, not just current patients.

Mission Bay: A turning point in pediatric care Through revolutionary medical research and specialized patient care designed just for kids, UCSF is bringing the future of children’s health to Mission Bay. The new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay, scheduled to open on Feb. 1, 2015, will be part of a 289-bed integrated hospital complex for children, women and cancer patients. Innovative equipment, child-friendly décor, and rooms and resources that engage the whole family will promote the healing process. Patient rooms will be large enough to enable parents to stay with their children around the clock, and thousands of square feet of rehabilitation, play therapy and outdoor garden areas will complete the space.
