Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Service Providing expert and compassionate critical care transport for newborns and children for nearly 50 years, our dedicated team ensures safe and expedient interfacility transport to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Transport Service Overview The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Service serves newborns, infants and children with medical or surgical conditions requiring specialized care and transport. With the support of experts from more than 40 pediatric and neonatal specialties, our team of dedicated nurses, nurse practitioners and pediatricians bring quaternary care directly to the patient and provide safe and expedient interfacility transport to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Service What makes us unique  Our team is among the few in the country

that is staffed with dedicated physicians

and nurse practitioners along with highly experienced transport nurses.  The service is based in-house ensuring

superior quality control and customer service.

 We provide continuous contact between

referring physicians and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital specialists throughout the transfer process.  Attending neonatologists and pediatric

intensivists are available for consults 24/7.  Ground, fixed-wing, and rotor-wing transport

is available.  Transports are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.  Staff are trained and equipped to implement

evidence based protocols, including

therapeutic cooling for hypoxic ischemic brain injury and pediatric stroke protocols.  Nitric oxide therapy is available.  We provide neonatal resuscitation at the referring hospital for high-risk deliveries.  In most cases parents or guardians may

accompany the patient during transport.

How to arrange a transport  Call the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Access Center.

An experienced pediatric critical care nurse will connect you with the UCSF admitting physician who will lead the transport team and who will instantly initiate a transfer.  At the initiation of the transport, you and the admitting physician

will discuss the patient’s medical information and develop a plan for managing the patient.  Critical care nurses work closely with attending physicians 24/7 to

triage calls, provide physician referral, initiate the admission process and coordinate the dispatch of a critical care ground or air ambulance.

We strive to dispatch our transport team immediately to ensure the fastest service possible.  Urgent and non-urgent specialty telephone consults are available

24/7. Referring physicians may request consults with the UCSF admitting physician or appropriate attending physician at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital when their patients are in their office, clinic or emergency department.

Compassionate Care Our transport team isn’t only about technology and expertise — it’s also about compassion for patients and their families.

For older children, ambulances feature toys, colorful decorations and DVD players. Parents who cannot accompany their newborn always have the opportunity to see, touch and talk to their newborn before transport.

Prior to departure, the transport team can take and print digital photos of the baby to leave with the family.
