Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Services Through risk assessments, screening exams and prevention programs, we create personalized risk-reduction strategies for those with cancer and those who may be at increased risk.

Who should consider our services?

We offer programs designed for people who have:  A

personal or family history of early-onset cancer or multiple cancers  A family history of multiple relatives with the same or related cancers  A history of pre-cancerous conditions, including in-situ cancers  An inherited mutation causing cancer, such as - BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, causing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer - Lynch syndrome (formerly called hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer or HNPCC), causing an increased risk of colon, uterine and other cancers - Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), causing an increased risk of colon polyps and colon cancer

- Syndromes featuring tumors of the endocrine glands (multiple endocrine neoplasia, types 1 and 2)  Other

conditions causing an increased risk of cancer

Cancer Prevention and Screening Services The American Cancer Society estimates that more than half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people adopted cancer prevention measures. These can include receiving routine check-ups, developing healthy habits and being aware of the early signs of cancer.

Cancer can be discovered early or often prevented through regular check-ups, screenings, and procedures or medications that reduce risk.

At the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, we recognize that prevention and early detection are an important part of cancer care. For people concerned about their risk, we offer many services to personalize their medical options.

For people who have received a cancer diagnosis, we assess the chances of another cancer and recommend options for risk reduction and screening.

Our programs We offer same-day appointments in multiple prevention clinics Breast Cancer Prevention Clinic (415) 353-7070  Provides expert clinical breast

exams and imaging, such as mammogram, ultrasound or MRI, as appropriate  Offers discussions of breast

cancer risk factors and informa- tion about the possibility of making risk-reducing choices Cancer Risk Program (415) 885-7779  Collects and evaluates detailed

personal and family medical histories for risk assessment  Provides counseling, consent,

and arrangements for genetic testing  When appropriate, conducts

genetic testing and interprets the results Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention Clinic (415) 885-7779  Features expert screening

procedures, including colonos- copy, upper endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound  Offers coordinated diagnostic

and surgical interventions for high-risk patients and their families including pathologic screening of all colorectal cancer tumors

Gynecologic Cancer Prevention Clinic (415) 885-7779  Coordinates specialized

surveillance, including expert gynecologic exams, endometrial biopsy, ultrasound and blood tests

 Offers risk-reducing surgery

Melanoma Prevention Clinic (415) 353-9900  Provides comprehensive

dermatologic exams, including mole mapping and photography  Offers counseling about strate-

gies for reducing skin cancer risk Prostate Cancer Prevention Clinic (415) 353-7171  Conducts prostate cancer

screening, including digital rectal exam (DRE) and PSA blood tests  Offers counseling about

strategies for reducing prostate cancer risk Appointments with our cancer prevention specialists and your cancer physician can often be coordinated to occur on the same day.

Our experts Genetic counselors Genetic counselors explain genetic risk factors and how they may affect you and your family, provide support, and discuss emotional aspects of cancer risk.

Medical geneticists A medical geneticist is a physician who specializes in the area of hereditary diseases.

Oncologists An oncologist is a physician who specializes in treating cancer.

Radiologists A radiologist is a physician who specializes in the reading and interpretation of X-rays and other medical images.

Surgeons Surgeons are physicians who perform operations on parts of the body.

Other health care professionals Gastroenterologists (doctors who specialize in digestive system disorders), nurses and nurse practitioners are also part of our multidisciplinary team.
